This will cause a significant loss in accuracy of FE forming analysis, in particular, for friction stir welded(FSW) blanks due to the large width and good formability of its weld seam. The inhomogeneous mechanical properties across weld seam need to be well characterized for an accurate FE analysis. Based on a similar AA5182 FSW blank, the metallographic observation and micro-Vickers hardness analysis upon the weld cross-section are performed to identify the interfaces of different sub-zones, i.e., heat affected zone(HAZ), thermal-mechanically affected zone(TMAZ) and weld nugget(WN). Based on the rule of mixture and hardness distribution, a constitutive model is established for each sub-zone to characterize the inhomogeneous mechanical properties across the weld seam. Uniaxial tensile tests of the AA5182 FSW blank are performed with the aid of digital image correlation(DIC) techniques. Experimental local stress-strain curves are obtained for different weld sub-zones. The experimental results show good agreement with those derived from the constitutive models, which demonstrates the feasibility and accuracy of these models. The proposed research gives an accurate characterization of inhomogeneous mechanical properties across the weld seam produced by FSW, which provides solutions for improving the FE simulation accuracy of FSW sheet forming.展开更多

The results show that the nugget zone (NZ) is characterized by fine equiaxed grains, in which a low density of equilibrium phase β is observed. The grains in the thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) are elongated, and the highest density of dislocations and a low density of β precipitates can be found in grains. The heat affected zone (HAZ) only experiences a low thermal cycle, and a high density of β precipitates and a low density of β precipitates remain in the coarsened grains. The microhardness evolutions in the NZ, TMAZ and HAZ are governed by the grain refinement and dislocation strengthening, the dislocation and precipitation strengthening, and the precipitation and solid solution strengthening, respectively. When increasing the axial force, the changing trend of one strengthening mechanism is contrary to the other in each zone, and the microhardness increases in different zones. As a result, the tensile strength roughly increases with raising the axial force, and all joints show good tensile properties as the high welding speed inhibits the coarsening and dissolution of strengthening precipitates significantly.展开更多

The temperature distribution, microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of joints along the thickness direction were investigated, and digital image correlation (DIC) was utilized to evaluate quantitatively the deformation of different zones during tensile tests. The results indicated that heat-affected zone (HAZ), the local softening region, was responsible for the early plastic deformation and also the fracture location for SS-FSW samples, while a rapid fracture was observed in weld nugget zone (WNZ) before yield behavior for all BB-FSW specimens. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of SS-FSW joints presented the highest value of 410 MPa, 82% of the base material, at a rotational speed of 300 rpm and welding speed of 60 mm/min, much higher than that of BB-FSW joints, with a joint efficiency of only 47%. This should be attributed to the Lazy S defect produced by a larger extent of heat input during the BB-FSW process, The whole joint exhibited a much higher elongation than the slices. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis of the fracture morphologies showed that joints failed through ductile fracture for SS-FSW and brittle fracture for BB-FSW.展开更多

Their effects on mechanical properties of the joint were examined. When the welding heat input was high, the peak temperature in the stir zone was higher than the incipient melting temperature of the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy. This resulted in local melting along the grain boundaries in this zone. In the retreating stage of the welding process, the formed liquid phase was driven by the flowing plastic material and redistributed as a "U-shaped" line in the stir zone. In the following cooling stage, this liquid phase transformed into eutectic films and liquation cracks. As a result, a new characteristic of"U" line that consisted of eutectic films and liquation cracks is formed in the FSpWjoin. This "U" line was located in the high stress region when the FSpW joint was loaded, thus it was adverse to the mechanical properties of the FSpW joint. During tensile shear tests, the "U" line became a preferred crack propagation path, resulting in the occurrence of brittle fracture.展开更多

To evaluate bridge seismic responses more accurately, proper analytical models of bearings and shear keys should be developed. Based on a series of cyclic loading experiments and analyses, rational analytical models of laminated elastomeric bearings and shear keys, which can consider mechanical degradation, were developed. The effect of the mechanical degradation was investigated by examining the seismic response of a small-to-medium-span bridge in the transverse direction under a wide range of peak ground accelerations(PGA). The damage mechanism for small-to-medium-span highway bridges was determined, which can explain the seismic damage investigation during earthquakes in recent years. The experimental results show that the mechanical properties of laminated elastomeric bearings will degrade due to friction sliding, but the degree of decrease is dependent upon the influencing parameters. It can be concluded that the mechanical degradation of laminated elastomeric bearings and shear keys play an important role in the seismic response of bridges. The degradation of mechanical properties of laminated elastomeric bearings and shear keys should be included to evaluate more precise bridge seismic performance.展开更多

Low-heat-input parameters of 400 rpm rotation rate in water (400-Water) could effectively inhibit the coarsening of recrystallized grains, reduce the precipitation rate, and retain more dislocations of the UFG 6061 Al parent metal. 400-Water joint showed high lowest-hardness value, narrow low-hardness zone, and high tensile strength, attributing to the effect of dislocation, grain boundary, solid-solution, and precipitation hardening. This work provides an effective strategy to fabricate large-sized bulk UFG AI alloy by cold rolling with large deformation and low-heat-input FSW.展开更多

The influence of Si smearing thickness on frictionproperties was studied in detail. The results show that with the increase of Si smearing thickness and β-SiC content, the friction coefficient reduces from 0.40 to 0.30; the linear wear of stators increases from 2.0 μm to 18.9 μm percycle, and that of rotors increases from 1.4 μm to 22.6 μm per cycle; mass wear of stators increases from 20.6 mgto 126.9 mg per cycle, and that of rotors increases from 13.7 mg to 166.2 mg per cycle. On the other hand, whena large number of inhomogeneous β-SiC particulates are performed, friction surfaces of the samples flake off layer bylayer and many nicks are observed.展开更多

One-pass FSP decreased the ferritic grain size in the processed zone from 25 μm to about 3 μm, which also caused a remarkable increase in strength values without considerable decrease in formability under uniaxial loading. A coarse-grained (CG) sample before FSP reflected a moderate formability with an Erichsen index (EI) of 2.73 mm. FSP slightly decreased the stretch formability of the sample to 2.66 ram. However, FSP increased the required punch load (FEI) due to the increased strength by grain refinement. FSP reduced considerably the roughness of the free surface of the biaxial stretched samples with reduced orange peel effect. The average roughness value (Ra) decreased from 2.90 in the CG sample down to about 0.65 μm in fine-grained (FG) sample after FSP. It can be concluded that the FG microstructure in low carbon steels sheets or plates used generally in shipbuilding provides a good balance between strength and formability.展开更多

Scanning electric microscope (SEM) equipment with microprobe was employed to analyze the morphology of the friction surface. Results show that the dry friction and wear properties are deeply affected by load. The wear rate of MoSi 2 at the load of 80?N is the maximum which is 36.1?μg/m. On the condition of the load of 150?N, MoSi 2 material has the better friction and wear properties: friction coefficient is 0.28 and wear rate is 10.6?μg/m. With the load increasing, the main friction mechanisms change from microslip and plastic deformation to adhesive effect, and the main wear mechanisms change from plough groove wear and oxidation fatigue wear to adhesive wear.展开更多

Friction coefficient and wear rate of the alloys were measured under three different applied loads(50 N, 100 N, and 200 N, respectively). Worn surface morphologies were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope(SEM) coupled with an energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS). It is found that the friction coefficient of the alloys decreases with increasing load, except the as-cast GZ61 K. The wear rates of the as-cast Mg-Gd-Zn-Zr alloys increase with the increase of the load. However, the wear rates of the T6-treated Mg-Gd-Zn-Zr alloys first increase because of the participation of a large amount of needle-like precipitates, but then decline due to obvious work hardening. The wear mechanisms of abrasion, plastic deformation, oxidation, adhesion and delamination are detected. Abrasion dominates the wear mechanism under the low load; whereas, adhesion is the main wear mechanism under intermediate load, and plastic deformation has great effect on the wear rate under high applied load.展开更多

文摘Local melting and the eutectic film and liquation crack formation mechanisms during friction spot weld- ing (FSpW) of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy were studied by both experiment and finite element simulation. During tensile shear tests, the "U" line became a preferred crack propagation path, resulting in the occurrence of brittle fracture.

文摘Strengthening interface bonding between boron nitride nanosheets(BNNS)and copper matrix is an essential prerequisite for exploiting a new generation of copper matrix composites(CMCs)with high strength and wear resistance.Herein,BNNS/Cu composites were fabricated by the powder metallurgy route,matrix-alloying(adding 1.0 wt%Ti)strategy was adopted to improve the interfacial wettability and strengthen interface adhesion.A typical"sandwich"-like multiply interface structure involving TiN transition layers,BNNS and Cu matrix had been well constructed through the rational heat treatment(900℃ for 120 min).Additionally,nano-sized TiB whisker was in situ formed in the vicinity of the interface,it had linked the BNNS-Cu-TiN multiply interface, which played a role of"threading the needle"and significantly strengthened the multi-interfaces bonding. This specific interface structure was finely characterized, and the formation mechanism of solid-state interfacial reaction feature was proposed. The results demonstrated that the ultimate tensile strength(UTS)of BNNS/Cu-(Ti)-900℃ increased from 248 to 530 MPa(increased by 114%),and the coefficient of friction(COF)decreased from 0.51 to 0.28 than pure Cu.This work highlights the importance of interface configuration design, which contributes to the development of CMCs with prominent comprehensive properties.

文摘The contact problem of deformed rough surfaces exists widely in complex engineering structures. How to reveal the influence mechanism of surface deformation on the contact properties is a key issue in evaluating the interface performances of the engineering structures. In this paper,a contact model is established, which is suitable for tensile and bending deformed contact surfaces.Four contact forms of asperities are proposed, and their distribution characteristics are analyzed. This model reveals the mechanism of friction generation from the perspective of the force balance of asperity. The results show the contact behaviors of the deformed contact surface are significantly different from that of the plane contact, which is mainly reflected in the change in the number of contact asperities and the real contact area. This study suggests that the real contact area of the interface can be altered by applying tensile and bending strains, thereby regulating its contact mechanics and conductive behavior.

文摘In rock engineering, the cyclic shear characteristics of rough joints under dynamic disturbances are still insufficiently studied. This study conducted cyclic shear experiments on rough joints under dynamic normal loads to assess the impact of shear frequency(f_(h))and shear displacement amplitude(u_(d))on the frictional properties of the joint. The results reveal that within a single shearing cycle, the normal displacement negatively correlates with the dynamic normal force. As the shear cycle number increases, the joint surface undergoes progressive wear, resulting in an exponential decrease in the peak normal displacement. In the cyclic shearing procedure, the forward peak values of shear force and friction coefficient display larger fluctuations at either lower or higher shear frequencies. However, under moderate shear frequency conditions, the changes in the shear strength of the joint surface are smaller, and the degree of degradation post-shearing is relatively limited. As the shear displacement amplitude increases, the range of normal deformation within the joint widens.Furthermore, after shearing, the corresponding joint roughness coefficient trend shows a gradual decrease with an increasing shear displacement amplitude, while varying with the shearing frequency in a pattern that initially rises and then falls, with a turning point at 0.05 Hz.The findings of this research contribute to a profound comprehension of the cyclic frictional properties of rock joints under dynamic disturbances.

文摘Laminated elastomeric bearings have been widely used for small-to-medium-span highway bridges in China, in which concrete shear keys are set transversely to prohibit large girder displacement. The degradation of mechanical properties of laminated elastomeric bearings and shear keys should be included to evaluate more precise bridge seismic performance.

文摘In this study, the ultrafine grained (UFG) 6061 Al alloys fabricated by cold rolling were friction stir welded (FSW) with different rotation rates under both air cooling and rapid cooling in water. This work provides an effective strategy to fabricate large-sized bulk UFG AI alloy by cold rolling with large deformation and low-heat-input FSW.

文摘In order to improve the friction-wear properties of the C/C composites for aircraft brake pairs, the fric-tion behavior of samples with infiltrating Si was investigated. On the other hand, whena large number of inhomogeneous β-SiC particulates are performed, friction surfaces of the samples flake off layer bylayer and many nicks are observed.

文摘Microstructural evolution and strain hardening behavior of a friction stir welded(FSWed) high-strength7075Al-T651 alloy were evaluated. The nugget zone was observed to consist of fine and equiaxed recrystallized grains with a low dislocation density and free of original precipitates, but containing uniformly distributed dispersoids. The strength, joint efficiency, and ductility of the FSWed joints increased with increasing welding speed.A joint efficiency of *91% was achieved at a welding speed of 400 mm/min and rotational rate of 800 r/min,while the ductility remained basically the same as that of the base metal. There was no obvious strain rate sensitivity observed in both base metal and welded joints. While both the base metal and FSWed joints exhibited stage III and IV hardening characteristics, the hardening capacity, strain hardening exponent, and strain hardening rate all increased after friction stir welding.

文摘The stretch formability of a low carbon steel processed by friction stir processing (FSP) was studied under biaxial loading condition applied by a miniaturized Erichsen test. It can be concluded that the FG microstructure in low carbon steels sheets or plates used generally in shipbuilding provides a good balance between strength and formability.
文摘The dry friction and wear properties of intermetallics MoSi 2 against 45 steel under different loads were investigated with M 2 type friction and wear tester. With the load increasing, the main friction mechanisms change from microslip and plastic deformation to adhesive effect, and the main wear mechanisms change from plough groove wear and oxidation fatigue wear to adhesive wear.

文摘Fault activation has been the focus of research community for years. However, the studies of fault activation remain immature, such as the fault activation mode and its major factors under constant normal stiffness(CNS)conditions associated with large thickness of fault surrounding rock mass.In this study, the rock friction experiments were conducted to understand the fault activation modes under the CNS conditions. Two major parameters,i.e.the initial normal stress and loading rate, were considered and calibrated in the tests. To reveal the response mechanism of fault activation, the local strains near the fault plane were recorded, and the macroscopic stresses and displacements were analyzed. The testing results show that the effect of displacement-controlled loading rate is more pronounced under the CNS conditions than that under constant normal load(CNL)conditions. Both the normal and shear stresses drop suddenly when the stick-slip occurs. The decrease and increase of the normal stress are synchronous with the shear stress in the regular stick-slip scenario, but mismatch with the shear stress during the chaotic stick-slip process. The results are helpful for understanding the fault sliding mode and the prediction and prevention of fault slip.

文摘Dry sliding wear tests on as-cast and T6-treated Mg-3Gd-1Zn-0.4Zr(wt%, GZ31K) and Mg-6Gd-1Zn-0.4Zr(wt%, GZ61K) alloys were performed using a ball-on-disk configuration at room temperature. Abrasion dominates the wear mechanism under the low load; whereas, adhesion is the main wear mechanism under intermediate load, and plastic deformation has great effect on the wear rate under high applied load.
