As Thailand and China mark the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties this year, most headlines will naturally focus on trade deals, railways, and strategic partnerships. But tucked behind the golden spires of Bangkok’s Wat Po temple lies a quieter, gentler form of diplomacy—one that happens through kneading hands, respectful bows, and an ancient art passed down across generations. At the Wat Po Thai Traditional Medical School, headmaster Serat Tangtrongchitr sees Thai massage not only as a healing craft, but as a cultural bridge—one that connects people across borders, languages, and belief systems.“We don’t just teach massage,”Serat said, his voice calm but assured.“We teach a way of life. And when people from other cultures learn this with us—Chinese students included—they come to understand not just the techniques, but the heart of Thai culture.” 展开更多

The therapeutic effect of moxibustion combined with finger-massage method was observed in 68 patients suffering from enuresis. The results showed that (1) The present therapy is effective for enuresis with cure rate of 66.18% and total effective rate of 92. 65 %; (2) The curative effects was related with the syndrome differentiation (P <0. 01), e. g. it is effective for deficiency of kidney-Yang and deficiency of Qi in lung and spleen types, but ineffective for the type of downward flow of damp-heat; (3) The therapeutic effect was also closely related with the course of disease. The shorter the course of illness lasted, the more effective the therapy was, indicating that such patients should be treated in the early stage. This method is not only comparable to other conventional acupuncture methods in respects of the cure rate and total effective rate, but is also simple to apply, safe to use, easy to be accepted by children and adverse-effect free. It is deserved to be popularized as a effective therapy for enuresis in children patients. 展开更多

BACKGROUND: Based on clinical findings and syndromes, it has been previously shown that therapeutic methods for cerebral palsy can be greatly improved by selecting fewer, but more accurate acupoints. Therefore, greater therapeutic efficacy for cerebral palsy could be obtained by selecting the five Shu acupoints, which are located at the qi-intersecting point of the twelve meridians below the elbow and knee. OBJECTIVE: To treat children with spastic cerebral palsy using acupuncture and massage at the Shu and He points through a combination of rehabilitative training, and to compare the effects with routine acupuncture and massage. DESIGN: A randomized controlled clinical trial. SETTING: Rehabilitation Center for Cerebral Palsy, Department of Pediatrics, Affiliated Hospital of Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. PARTICIPANTS: Sixty children with spastic cerebral palsy were selected from the Rehabilitation Center for Cerebral Palsy, Department of Pediatrics, Affiliated Hospital of Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from May 2003 to February 2006. There were 38 boys and 22 girls, aged 10 months to 4 years old, muscle strength ranging from grade I to grade IV. The children were randomly divided into a treatment group (n =30) and a control group (n =30). Informed consent for the therapeutic program was obtained from the relatives of all enrolled children. The study was approved by the Hospital's Ethical Committee. METHODS: All children were given exercise and occupational therapy based on standard treatments. (1) In the control group, the children were additionally treated with routine acupuncture and massage during the one-month basic rehabilitative training. The acupuncture needles were manipulated alternately at the acupoints of Jianyu, Shousanli, Binao, Hegu, Huantiao, Xuanzhong, and Biguan. They were treated once per day, 6 days a week, followed by one day of rest. The children's limbs were first massaged by pressing, stretching, rolling, and kneading. Then, the same acupuncture points were pressed with the thumb for 30 minutes each time, once a day, 6 days a week, followed by one day of rest. The treatment continued for 1 month. (2) In the treatment group, the children were administered acupuncture and massage at the Shu and He points during the one-month basic rehabilitative treatment. For acupuncture of the upper limbs, the following acupoints were used: Sanjian and Quchi of the Large Intestine Meridian of Hand-Yangming, and Houxi and Xiaohai of the Small Intestine Meridian of Hand-Taiyang. The acupoints were acupunctured alternately every other day. For acupuncture of the lower limbs, the following acupoints were used; Zulinqi and Yanglingquan of the Gall bladder Meridian of Foot-Shaoyang, Taibai and Yinlingquan of the Spleen Meridian of Foot-Taiyang, or Xiangu and Zusanli of the Stomach Meridian of Foot-Yangming. The acupoints were acupunctured alternately every other day. Three needles were for the medial malleolus and three needles for the lateral malleolus. They were treated once a day, 6 days a week, followed by one day of rest. The children's limbs were first massaged by means of pressing, stretching, rolling, and kneading. The same acupuncture points were then pressed with the thumb for 0.5-1 minute at each point, 30 minutes each time, once a day, 6 days a week, followed by one day of rest. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Therapeutic efficacy was evaluated using gross motor function measurements, as well as activity of daily living scale before and after treatment. RESULTS: All 60 enrolled children with spastic cerebral palsy were included in the final analysis of results. (1) Comparison of gross motor function scores: The gross motor function score after treatment was significantly higher in both the treatment group and control group than before treatment (t = -3.86 and -8.882, respectively, P 〈 0.05). The scores in the treatment group were significantly higher than the control group scores (t = -7.166, P 〈 0.01). (2) Changes in activity of daily living scores: The scores for activity of daily living in the treatment group was significantly higher after treatment than before treatment (t = -3.933, P 〈 0.01), and was also significantly higher than the control group (t = -0.671, P 〈 0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture and massage at the Shu and He acupoints can significantly ameliorate motor function deficits and movement disabilities in children with spastic cerebral palsy. The therapeutic efficacy at these acupoints is better than routine acupuncture and massage. 展开更多

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the relationship between major signal points (MaSPs) of the lower extremities used in court-type Thai traditional massage (CTTM) and the corresponding underlying anatomical structures, as well as to determine the short-term changes in blood flow and skin temperature of volunteers experiencing CTTM. METHODS: MaSPs were identified and marked on cadavers before acrylic color was injected. The underlying structures marked with acrylic colors were observed and the anatomical structures were determined. Then, pressure was applied to each MaSP in human volunteers (lateral side of leg and medial side of leg) and blood flow on right dorsalis pedis artery was measured using duplex ultrasound while skin temperature changes were monitored using an infrared themographic camera. RESULTS: Short-term changes in the blood flow parameters, volume flow and average velocity, compared to baseline (P 〈 0.05), were observed on MaSP of the lower extremity, ML4. Changes in the peak systolic velocity of the area ML5 were also observed relative to baseline. The skin temperature of two different MaSPs on the lateral side of leg (LL4 and LL5) and four on the medial side of leg (ML2, ML3, ML4 and ML5) was significantly increased (P 〈 0.05) at 1 rain after pressure application. CONCLUSION: This study established the clear correlation between the location of MaSP, as defined in CTTM, and the underlying anatomical structures. The effect of massage can stimulate skin blood flow because results showed increased skin temperature and blood flow characteristics. While these results were statistically significant, they may not be clinically relevant, as the present study focused on the immediate physiological effect of manipulation, rather than treatment effects. Thus, this study will serve as baseline data for further clinical studies in CTTM 展开更多

Massage therapy is an alternative treatment for chronic pain that is potentially related to brain plasticity. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. We established a peripheral nerve injury model in rats by unilateral sciatic nerve transection and direct anastomosis. The experimental rats were treated over the gastrocnemius muscle of the affected hindlimb with a customized massage instrument(0.45 N,120 times/min,10 minutes daily, for 4 successive weeks).Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging revealed that compared with control rats, the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations in the sensorimotor cortex contralateral to the affected limb was significantly lower after sciatic nerve transection. However, amplitudes were significantly higher in the massage group than in a sham-massage group. These findings suggest that massage therapy facilitated adaptive change in the somatosensory cortex that led to the recovery of peripheral nerve injury and repair. This study was approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine of China(approval No.201701001)on January 12,2017. 展开更多

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Chinese massage therapy in patients with knee osteoarthritis(OA) by measuring lower-limb gait parameters. We recruited 20 women with knee OA,who then underwent Chinese massage therapy three times per week for 2 weeks. The patients underwent gait evaluation using a six-camera infrared motion analysis system. They completed Western Ontario and Mc Master Universities Osteoarthritis Index questionnaires before and after treatment. We calculated the forward speed, step width, step length, total support time percentage, initial double support time percentage, and single support time percentage. We also measured the angles at the knee, hip, and ankle during the stance phase of walking. The results showed statistically significant mean differences in knee pain relief, alleviation of stiffness, and physical function enhancement after therapy(P < 0.05). The patients gained significantly faster gait speed, greater step width, and increased total support time percentage after the Chinese massage therapy(P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in the range of motion or initial contact angles of the knee, hip,or ankle during the stance phase of walking. We concluded that Chinese massage is a beneficial complementary treatment and an alternative therapy choice for patients with knee OA for short-term pain relief. Chinese massage may improve walking ability for these patients. 展开更多
