This paper selects sampling sections for the mainstream and tributaries of the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, collects river water and sediment samples during the flood season for pollen analysis, and uses methods such as Geodetector to explore the distribution characteristics and influencing factors of pollen. The results show significant variations in vegetation composition across different watersheds, leading to notable differences in both the percentage and concentration of pollen types.Pollen concentration in river water is generally higher in the mainstream compared to tributaries, while sediment pollen percentage and concentration are typically lower in the mainstream than in tributaries. The concentration of suspended solids is the most significant factor affecting pollen concentration in the Yellow River, with this effect being particularly prominent outside the Shanxi-Shaanxi Gorge.Abundant coarse sand and rapid flow velocities are likely responsible for the high suspended solids concentration and lower pollen concentration observed in the mainstream of the Shanxi-Shaanxi Gorge. In sediments, clay content is the primary factor influencing pollen concentration, and its interaction with silt and flow velocity has a more prominent influence on pollen concentration. At the Yellow River section below the Shanxi-Shaanxi Gorge, sediment pollen and clay concentrations significantly increase. The changes in pollen concentration in the river water before and after the reservoir are consistent with the suspended solids concentration, while the changes in sediment pollen concentration are consistent with the clay content.Notably, pollen concentrations in sediments decrease more significantly after passing through a reservoir compared to changes observed in river water samples.Overall, there is a strong correlation between river pollen and topsoil pollen, which can provide a reliable reflection of the broader vegetation landscape of the watershed. The findings can provide support for paleoenvironmental reconstruction using pollen from alluvial sediments or lakes with river inflows. 展开更多

To investigate the characteristics of water environmental pollution in the Nenjiang River Basin, five monitoring sections, including Zhenxi,Xianghai Reservoir,Baishatan,Yuelianghu Reservoir, and Da an,were selected.Utilizing water quality monitoring data collected from 2013 to 2022,the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method was employed to systematically analyze the spatiotemporal variation patterns of water quality, assess the current pollution status, and identify the influencing factors of non-point source pollution. The results indicated that the concentrations of representative pollutants at five sections in the lower reaches of the Nenjiang River generally exhibited a downward trend, accompanied by an overall improvement in water quality. However, the degree of improvement varied considerably among the different sections.Specifically, the water quality of the main stream of the Nenjiang River(Baishatan and Da an)improved from Class IV to Class III.In contrast, the Xianghai Reservoir consistently remained at Class V or below, primarily due to excessive fluoride levels. The water quality at Yuelianghu Reservoir and Heidimiao Section demonstrated a fluctuating but overall improving trend.Based on the analysis of pollution sources, targeted recommendations are proposed, including regulating the ecological water requirements of rivers, restoring wetland ecosystems, and enhancing the management of non-point source pollution. These measures offer scientific support for water quality management and ecological conservation in the river basins. 展开更多

Studying the causes of summer(June–July–August)precipitation anomalies in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River(MLYR)and accurately predicting rainy season precipitation are important to society and the economy. In recent years, the sea surface temperature(SST)trend factor has been used to construct regression models for summer precipitation. In this study, through correlation analysis, winter SST anomaly predictors and the winter Central Pacific SST trend predictor(CPT)are identified as closely related to the following MLYR summer precipitation(YRSP).CPT can influence YRSP by inducing anomalous circulations over the North Pacific, guiding warm and moist air northward, and inhibiting the development of the anomalous anticyclone over the Northwest Pacific. This has improved the predictive skill of the seasonal regression model for YRSP.After incorporating the CPT,the correlation coefficient of the YRSP regression model improved by 40%,increasing from 0.45 to 0.63,and the root mean squared error decreased by 22%,from 1.15 to 0.90. 展开更多

Restoration and reconstruction of the degraded Tarim River ecosystem is an important challenge. A goal of an ecological water conveyance project is to protect and restore the natural vegetation in the lower reaches of Tadm River by transferring water from Bosten Lake, through the river channel, to the lower reaches. This study describes the changes in groundwater depth during the water transfer and the respondence of riparian vegetation to alterations in groundwater levels. The results indicate that groundwater depth along the Tarim River channel has a significant spatial-temporal component. Groundwater levels closest to the river channel show the most immediate and pronounced changes as a response to water transfer while those further away respond more slowly, although the observed change appears to be longer in duration. With a rise in the groundwater level, natural vegetation responded with higher growth rates, biomass and biodiversity. These favorable changes show that it is feasible to protect and restore the degraded natural vegetation by raising the groundwater depth. Plant communities are likely to reflect the hysteresis phenomenon, requiting higher water levels to initiate and stimulate desired growth than what may be needed to maintain the plant community. Because different species have different ecologies, including different root depths and densities and water needs, their response to increasing water availability will be spatially and temporally heterogenous. The response of vegetation is also influenced by microtopography and watering style. This paper discusses strategies for the protection and restoration of the degraded vegetation in the lower reaches of the Tarim River and provides information to complement ongoing theoretical research into ecological restoration in add or semi-arid ecosystems. 展开更多

Based on the long-term precipitation series with annual time resolution in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River and its four sub-regions during 1736-2000 reconstructed from the rainfall and snowfall archives of the Qing Dynasty, the precipitation cycles are analyzed by wavelet analysis and the possible climate forcings, which drive the precipitation changes, are explored. The results show that: the precipitation in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River has inter-annual and inter-decadal oscillations like 2-4a, quasi-22a and 70-80a. The 2-4a cycle is linked with El Nino events, and the precipitation is lower than normal year in the occurrence of the El Nino year or the next year; for the quasi-22a and the 70-80a cycles, Wolf Sun Spot Numbers and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) coincide with the two cycle signals. However, on a 70-80a time scale, the coincidence between solar activity and precipitation is identified before 1830, and strong (weak) solar activity is generally correlated to the dry (wet) periods; after 1830, the solar activity changes to 80-100a quasi-century long oscillation, and the adjusting action to the precipitation is becoming weaker and weaker; the coincidence between PDO and precipitation is shown in the whole time series. Moreover, in recent 100 years, PDO is becoming a pace-maker of the precipitation on the 70-80a time scale. 展开更多

Thirteen sediment core samples(0-10 cm) were taken from the seven lakes in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River to determine the contents and distributions of organic phosphorus(P) fractions in the sediments of the shallow lakes in the area. The organic P fractions in the sediments were in the order of moderately labile organic P(MLOP) > moderately resistant organic P(MROP) > highly resistant organic P(HROP) > labile organic P(LOP),with average proportional ratios of 13.2:2.8:1.3:1.0.LOP,MLOP,and MROP were significantly related to the contents of total organic carbon(TOC),water-soluble P(WSP),algal-available P(AAP),NaHCO3-extractable P(Olsen-P),total P(TP),organic P(OP),and inorganic P(IP).However,HROP was significantly related to OP and weakly correlated with TOC,WSP,AAP,Olsen-P,TP or IP.This suggested that organic P,especially LOP and MLOP in sediments, deserved even greater attention than IP in regards to lake eutrophication. In terms of organic P,sediments were more hazardous than soils in lake eutrophication.Although OP concentrations were higher in moderately polluted sediment than those in heavily polluted sediment,LOP and MLOP were higher in the heavily polluted sediment, which indicated that heavily polluted sediment was more hazardous than moderately polluted sediment in lake eutrophication. 展开更多

During recent decades, more frequent flood-drought alternations have been seen in China as a result of global climate change and intensive human activities, which have sig- nificant implications on water and food security. To better identify the characteristics of flood-drought alternations, we proposed a modified dry-wet abrupt alternation index (DWAAI) and applied the new method in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin (YRB-ML) to analyze the long-term spatio-temporal characteristics of dry-wet abrupt alterna- tion (DWAA) events based on the daily precipitation observations at 75 rainfall stations in summer from 1960 to 2015. We found that the DWAA events have been spreading in the study area with higher frequency and intensity since 1960. In particular, the DWAA events mainly occurred in May and June in the northwest of the YRB-ML, including Hanjiang River Basin, the middle reaches of the YRB, north of Dongting Lake and northwest of Poyang Lake. In addition, we also analyzed the impact of El Nifio Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on DWAA events in the YRB-ML. The results showed that around 41.04% of DWAA events occurred during the declining stages of La Nifia or within the subsequent 8 months after La Nina, which implies that La Nina events could be predictive signals of DWAA events. Besides, significant negative correlations have been found between the modified DWAAI values of all the rainfall stations and the sea surface temperature anomalies in the Nino3.4 region within the 6 months prior to the DWAA events, particularly for the Poyang Lake watershed and the middle reaches of the YRB. This study has significant implications on the flood and drought control and water resources management in the YRB-ML under the challenge of future climate change. 展开更多

Using the daily data of temperature from China Meteorological Administration and the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis from 1960 to 2005, we have analyzed the relationships between the summertime high/low temperature events in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River (MLRYR) and the related circulation anomalies in the Eastern Hemisphere. Our results have demonstrated that a significantly increasing trend is observed in daily minimum temperature in the past 50 years. And in some regions in the Northern Hemisphere, the opposite scenarios are observed in circulation anomalies in lower and upper parts of the troposphere in the years when the temperatures are higher than normal, as compared to those in the years when the temperatures are lower than normal in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River (MLRYR). Additionally, the anomalous circulation structure in vertical direction in both the high and lower temperature years are barotropic. It is found that the emergence and maintenance of the aforementioned anomalous circulations are related to three kinds of wave train teleconnection patterns. Further more, influences of the long wave surface radiation on the air temperature are stronger in the nighttime than that in the daytime. While both the maximum and minimum temperatures have negative relationships with the sensible heat flux but positive relationships with the latent heat flux. To some extent, the anomalous dynamic heating (cooling) caused by the vertical thermal advection as well as the diabatic heating (cooling) caused by diabatic processes can explain the formation of the high (low) temperature events in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River (MLRYR) in boreal summer. 展开更多

Studies of the Pb, Sr and Nd isotopic composition of Mesozoic intrusive rocks indicate that the basement of the copper-gold metallogenic belt of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River has “two-layer structure” and partly has “multi-layered structure”, and is inhomogeneous and shows the distinct feature of E-W provincialism. The calculated model lead ages (t1) are mostly greater than 2600 Ma, and the model neodymium ages (TDM) vary from 953 to 2276 Ma and concentrate in two time intervals: 1800–2000 Ma and 1200–1600 Ma. It is concluded that the basement of the MBYR is composed of the Late Archaeozoic to Middle Proterozoic metamorphic series and that the crust was initiated in the Archaean and continued to grow in the Early and Middle Proterozoic, and the proportion of new crust formed by mantle differentiation during the Late Proterozoic is low. 展开更多

Anomalous characteristics of the atmospheric water cycle structure are highly significant to the mechanisms of seasonal-scale meteorological droughts. They also play an important role in the identification of indicative predictors of droughts. To better understand the causes of seasonal meteorological droughts in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River(MLRYR),characteristics of the atmospheric water cycle structure at different drought stages were determined using standardized anomalies. The results showed that the total column water vapor(TCWV)was anomalously low during drought occurrence periods. In contrast, there were no anomalous signals at the drought persistence and recovery stages in the MLRYR.Moreover, there was no significant temporal correlation between the TCWV anomaly and seasonal-scale drought index(the 3-month standardized precipitation index(SPI_(3))).During drought events, water vapor that mainly originated from the Bay of Bengal was transported southwest of the MLRYR.Meanwhile, the anomalous signal of water vapor transport was negative at the drought appearance stage. At the drought persistence stage, the negative anomalous signal was the most significant.Water vapor flux divergence in the MLRYR showed significant positive anomalous signals during drought events, and the signal intensity shifted from an increasing to a decreasing trend at different drought stages. In addition,a significant positive correlation existed between the anomaly of water vapor flux divergence and regional SPI_(3).Overall,water vapor flux divergence is more predictive of droughts in the MLRYR. 展开更多

In this study,we compiled and analyzed 69310 P-wave travel-time data from 6639 earthquake events. These events(M≥2.0)occurred from 1980 s to June 2019 and were recorded at 319 seismic stations(Chinese Earthquake Networks Center)in the study area.We adopted the double-difference seismic tomographic method(tomo DD)to invert the 3-D P-wave velocity structure and constrain the crust-upper mantle architecture of the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River Metallogenic Belt(MLYB).A 1-D initial model extracted from wide-angle seismic profiles was used in the seismic tomography, which greatly reduced the inversion residual. Our results indicate that reliable velocity structure of th e uppermost mantle can be obtained when Pn is involved in the tomography. Our results show that:(1)the pattern of the uppermost mantle velocity structure corresponds well with the geological partitioning:a nearly E-W-trending low-velocity zone is present beneath the Dabie Orogen,in contrast to the mainly NE-trending low-velocity anomalies beneath the Jiangnan Orogen. They suggest the presence of thickened lower crust beneath the orogens in the study area.In contrast, the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks are characterized by relatively high-velocity anomalies;(2)both the ultra-high-pressure(UHP)metamorphic rocks in the Dabie Orogen and the low-pressure metamorphic rocks in the Zhangbaling dome are characterized by high-velocity anomalies. The upper crust in the Dabie Orogen is characterized by a low-velocity belt, sandwiched between two high velocity zones in a horizontal direction, with discontinuous low-velocity layers in the middle crust. The keel of the Dabie Orogen is mainly preserved beneath its northern section. We infer that the lower crustal delamination may have mainly occurred in the southern Dabie Orogen, which caused the mantle upwelling responsible for the formation of the granitic magmas emplaced in the middle crust as the low-velocity layers observed there.Continuous deep-level compression likely squeezed the granitic magma upward to intrude the upper crustal UHP metamorphic rocks, forming the'sandwich'velocity structure there;(3)high-velocity updoming is widespread in the crust-mantle transition zone beneath the MLYB.From the Anqing-Guichi ore field northeastward to the Luzong,Tongling,Ningwu and Ningzhen orefields,high-velocity anomalies in the crust-mantle transition zone increase rapidly in size and are widely distributed. The updoming also exists in the crust-mantle transition zone beneath the Jiurui and Edongnan orefields, but the high-velocity anomalies are mainly stellate distributed. The updoming high-velocity zone beneath the MLYB generally extends from the crust-mantle transition zone to the middle crust, different from the velocity structure in the upper crust. The upper crust beneath the Early Cretaceous extension-related Luzong and Ningwu volcanic basins is characterized by high velocity zones,in contrast to the low velocity anomalies beneath the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous compression-related Tongling ore field. The MLYB may have undergone a compressive-to-extensional transition during the Yanshanian(Jurassic-Cretaceous)period,during which extensive magmatism occurred. The near mantle-crustal boundary updoming was likely caused by asthenospheric underplating at the base of the lower crust. The magmas may have ascended through major crustal faults, undergoing AFC(assimilation and fractional crystallization)processes, became emplaced in the fault-bounded basins or Paleozoic sequences, eventually forming the many Cu-Fe polymetallic deposits there. 展开更多

Yangshao culture is the most important mid-Holocene Neolithic culture in the Yellow River catchment, and thus, a study on the impact of human activities on the environment is important. In the current study, the distribution pattern of the cultivated land in late Yangshao culture is reconstructed using GIS tool and site domain analysis (SDA). The results show that the cultivated land during 5.5-5.0 ka BP was mainly distributed in the Weihe River valley, Luohe River valley, northwestern Henan Plain, Fenhe River valley and eastern Gansu region, especially concentrated in the Xi'an-Baoji line of the Weihe River valley. At that time, at least 37,000 km2 of lands were reclaimed in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, and 132,000 km2 of lands were affected by agricultural activities. Human activities had become the driving force of land use/land coverage. Charcoal records indicate that the ancestors of Yangshao culture burnt forests for reclamation, leading to the decrease of arbor pollen at 5 ka BP in core areas of the Yangshao culture. The areas that were significantly affected by human activities accounted for 3.2% of the Yangshao culture influenced area, while the moderately affected areas accounted for 20.1% of Yangshao culture influenced area. Meanwhile, 92% of the land areas on the edge and outside of the Yangshao culture influenced area were not affected by human activities. The arbor pollen in these areas did not decrease until 4.0 ka BP. 展开更多

Based on monitored data from 840 samples, we assessed the spatial and temporal variability of groundwater salinization in the Tarim River lower reaches combining classical statistics and geostatistics. Results show that total dissolved solids (TDS) is significantly correlated with other related ions, such as Na+, Mg2+, Ca2-, C1- and K+. TDS and underground water level have characteristics of spatial autocorrelation, both of which present the isotropic characteristic and con- form to the spherical model in each year from 2001-2009. TDS is basically greater than 1 g/L but less than 2 g/L in the Tarim River lower reaches, which indicates that salt stagnation pollution is more serious. [ Method] From April to June in 2011, phytoplankton was conducted qualitative and quantitative researches in Lijin in lower reaches of the Yellow River. By combining population characteristics of the phytoplankton, its'relationship with environmental factor was dis- cussed. [ Result] 114 species and 5 phylum of phytoplankton were observed in the whole river section. The abundance of phytoplankton was 0.90 ×104 -303.35×104 ind/m3, and mean was 27.20 ×104 ind/m3. The biomass of phytoplankton was 0.008-5.890 mg/m3, and mean was 0.641 mg/m3. Shannon-Weaver diversity index, Pielou evenness index and Simpson's diversity index were respectively 1.59, 0.36 and 0.55. SPSS data analysis indicated that transparency was the uppermost environmental factor affected phytoplankton abundance. Phytoplankton abundance had posi- tive correlation with transparency, and the regression equation was y= -393.8 +115.5×-11 .lx2 +0.35x3(n=18, R2 =0.952, F=92.665, P〈0.01 ). [ Conclusion] The community structure of phytoplankton was unstable, and transparency was the uppermost environmental factor affected phyto- plankton abundance in lower reaches of the Yellow River. 展开更多

Using a neutron activation analysis technique, which involves gamma-spectrometry with a Ge(Li) detector coupled to a S40 multichannel analyzer and interfaced to a PDP-11 computer, we determined thirty-eight elements in sediments from the lower reach (downstream from Jinan) and estuary of Huanghe. The results are discussed in this paper. From inter-elemental correlations, it ts found that a large number of metals (Mn.As, Co, Cr.Cs, Rb, Sc, Ti, Ta, V and Zn) correlate positively with Fe. Ba and Ca correlate positively with Al. Whereas some elements (e. g. , Ti and lanthanides) show no correlation with either Fe or Al. On the other hand, Hf and Zr show a negative correlation with Fe. Elements which tend to be scavenged by Fe and Al colloids or suspended particles are enriched in sediments at the Huanghe Estuary relative to its lower reach. On the other hand, the contents of some elements (e. g. , Zr,Hf,U, Ba, etc. )are higher in sediments from the lower reach of Huanghe than in the estuarine sediments, which may be related to the sorting during deposition of source materials. On the basis of their chemical property and geochemical behavior, the 38 elements we studied are classified into seven groups. (1) weathering-prone elements, group A:K,Rb, Cs and Na; (2) weathering-prone elements, group B:Mg, Ca, Ba and Al; (3) transition elements:Fe, Co.Ni, Zn, As, Sb, Mn, Cr, W,Mo,V, Ta and Sc; (4) rare elements:group A (Zr and Hf) and group B (Ti); (5) rare earth elements:the lanthanides; (6) halogens: Cl and Br; amd (7) natural radioactive elements:U and Th. The basis for this classification is discussed and we emphasize that geochemical associations of elements in the natural environment are not necessarily in accord with their chemical properties as dictated by position at the periodic table. 展开更多

After analysis of location feature of the south of lower reaches of Yangtze River and its construction of urban and rural integration, the paper pointed out harmonious combination between natural and artificial factors had been neglected in planning and design of farmers' residential area at the south of lower reaches of Yangtze River,"regional characteristic" losing, residential area in the form of "city community" and buildings in European style. In view of these problems, relevant planning and design thoughts and methods had been proposed as to how to create "regional characteristic" from the perspective of planning, architecture and landscape design. It discussed with emphasis the importance of construction base type and combination of environment with residential area construction;inspirations and design methods obtained from traditional architectures;and the content of landscape overall planning and specific design. It was hoped to enlighten designers to shoulder social and historical responsibility, make exploration unremittingly, and construct beautiful homelands for people. 展开更多

The relationship between the late spring North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the summer extreme precipitation frequency (EPF) in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Valley (MLYRV) is examined using an NECP/NCAR reanalysis dataset and daily precipitation data from 74 stations in the MLYRV. The results show a significant negative correlation between the May NAO index and the EPF over the MLYRV in the subsequent summer. In positive EPF index years, the East Asian westerly jet shifts farther southward, and two blocking high positive anomalies appear over the Sea of Okhotsk and the Ural Mountains. These anomalies are favorable to the cold air from the mid-high latitudes invading the Yangtze River Valley (YRV). The moisture convergence and the ascending motion dominate the MLYRV. The above patterns are reversed in negative EPF index years. A wave train pattern that originates from the North Atlantic extends eastward to the Mediterranean and then moves to the Tibetan Plateau and from there to the YRV, which is an important link in the May NAO and the summer extreme precipitation in the MLYRV. The wave train may be aroused by the tripole pattern of the SST, which can explain why the May NAO affects the summer EPF in the MLYRV. 展开更多
