Effects of a Low-Head Dam Removal on River Morphology and Riparian Vegetation: A Case Study of Gongreung River 被引量:2

The long term existence of a low-head dam in the river channel significantly affects river geomorphology and river ecosystem. Because more and more low-head dam structures have deteriorated in recent years, the attention for low-head dam removal is increasing as one of alternatives for river restoration. Thus, this study intends to investigate the impacts of low-head dam removal on river geomorphology and riparian vegetation with developing a quantitative method to predict the changes of river morphology as well as invasion, growth, expansion and destruction of riparian vegetation after a low-head dam removal. To verify the numerical simulation model, the low-head dam removal case in Gongreung River was employed with investigation of low-head dam removal responses on river geomorphology and riparian vegetation. Following the low-head dam removal, the results of monitoring and numerical simulation indicated that new sand bars has formed as well as increasing the extent of existing sand bars in the upstream of the low-head dam. The sand bars have been colonized in a year after the low-head dam removal by grass type plants. After a decade to several decades, the riparian vegetation in sand bars often developed to tree type plants in several low-head dam removal cases. As other cases, Gongreung River also showed the growth of tree type plants in 5 years after the removal. 展开更多

A comprehensive 3D turbulent CFD study has been carried out to simulate a Low-Head(LH)vertical Direct Chill(DC)rolling ingot caster for the common magnesium alloy AZ31.The model used in this study takes into account the coupled laminar/turbulent melt flow and solidification aspects of the process and is based on the control-volume finite-difference approach.Following the aluminum/magnesium DC casting industrial practices,the LH mold is taken as 30 mm with a hot top of 60 mm.The previously verified in-house code has been modified to model the present casting process.Important quantitative results are obtained for four casting speeds,for three inlet melt pouring temperatures(superheats)and for three metal-mold contact heat transfer coefficients for the steady state operational phase of the caster.The variable cooling water temperatures reported by the industry are considered for the primary and secondary cooling zones during the simulations.Specifically,the temperature and velocity fields,sump depth and sump profiles,mushy region thickness,solid shell thickness at the exit of the mold and axial temperature profiles at the center and at three strategic locations at the surface of the slab are presented and discussed. 展开更多

Effects of Influential Parameters on Long-Term Channel Evolution Following Low-Head Dam Construction and Removal

In accordance with a drastic increase of low-head dams under consideration for removal in recent years, it is important to predict the effects of low-head dam removal from the modified river channel by the low-head dam construction. This study intends to investigate the long-term channel evolution process following low-head construction and removal and to find out the influential parameters (sediment diameter, river bed slope, dam height) for those channel evolution by two-dimensional numerical simulation model. Following the low-head dam construction, sediment deposition rates in upstream of the low-head dam are varied with the influential parameters. The sediment deposition rates and sandbar formation with riparian vegetation settlement on sandbars have significantly affected for channel evolution following low-head dam removal. Especially the knickpoint formation and the types of vegetation (grass type and tree type) on the sandbars are critical factors for channel evolution following low-head dam removal. Through the numerical simulation results of low-head dam construction (50 years) and low-head dam removal (50 years), it is identified that the modified river channel by low-head dam may not be easily restored to pre-dam conditions following its removal especially in river geomorphology and riparian vegetation. Consequently, this study found that the reversibility following low-head dam construction and removal depends on the sediment deposition rates in upstream of the low-head dam. 展开更多

Despite significant Brazilian social programs to expand energy access,approximately one million people in rural Amazonia still lack electricity.Moreover,the existing rural electricity grid in the region is inadequate for supporting efficient small-scale production systems due to both the poor quality and high cost of supplied energy.In parallel,traditional wooden bridges in the Amazon have been progressively replaced by more durable concrete structures in recent years.In this context,this study explores the application of very low-head hydropower installations in the Amazon,focusing on integrating axial-flow turbines beneath small concrete bridges.The methodology involves analyzing flow duration curves and key hydraulic parameters upstream and downstream to design a micro-hydropower system comprising two or more units,thereby maximizing annual energy generation.Additionally,the study assesses the applicability of the minimum pressure coefficient criterion to improve the efficiency of very low-head turbines.This design criterion is first validated against an existing experimental study featuring a propeller turbine with a simple curved plate blade.The proposed methodology is then applied to a case study involving a small dam-bridge with a head variation from 1.4 to 2.4 m and a flow rate ranging from 0.23 to 0.92 m^(3)/s.The optimal configuration achieves an energy output of 26.2 MWh/year with an efficiency of up to 86%. 展开更多

利用一维江湖河网模型,结合实测资料,对三峡水库及城陵矶综合枢纽运用后,长江与洞庭湖江湖关系自2013-2062年的变化进行了预测。结果表明,三峡水库运用至2062年,荆江河段冲刷继续,但速度逐渐减小,枯水位下降最高为1.62 m,洪水位下降最高... 利用一维江湖河网模型,结合实测资料,对三峡水库及城陵矶综合枢纽运用后,长江与洞庭湖江湖关系自2013-2062年的变化进行了预测。结果表明,三峡水库运用至2062年,荆江河段冲刷继续,但速度逐渐减小,枯水位下降最高为1.62 m,洪水位下降最高为0.41 m;城汉河段冲刷继续,枯水位下降最高为1.05 m,洪水位下降最高为0.15 m;三口分流量继续衰减,但年平均衰减率仅为三峡工程运用前的11.7%;三口河道松滋河冲刷约为0.57亿m3,虎渡河与藕池河为微冲微淤;洞庭湖淤积大幅减缓,淤积比为0.481。此外,城陵矶综合枢纽运用至2052年,使洞庭湖区各站枯水位抬高0.2-0.6 m不等,但对三口河道冲淤、分流分沙、长江干流冲淤、洞庭湖的淤积影响都较小,可以忽略不计。 展开更多

开展水利工程联合调度应急预案研究是降低水源地突发水污染风险的重要举措。为降低东太湖2-甲基异莰醇(2-MIB)浓度季节性突增对下游太浦河金泽水库供水安全的影响,采用平原河网水动力模型与数学回归分析耦合方法,基于2016年实况水情,开... 开展水利工程联合调度应急预案研究是降低水源地突发水污染风险的重要举措。为降低东太湖2-甲基异莰醇(2-MIB)浓度季节性突增对下游太浦河金泽水库供水安全的影响,采用平原河网水动力模型与数学回归分析耦合方法,基于2016年实况水情,开展了太浦河枢纽100~1000 m^(3)/s分级下泄流量情景模拟分析和水利工程调度策略研究。研究结果表明:800 m^(3)/s、400 m^(3)/s分别是影响水流到达时间、两岸支流汇入比例的关键流量节点。满足金泽取水断面2-MIB处理能力控制要求的东太湖来水2-MIB限值区间为525~1690 ng/L,并提出太浦河枢纽下泄流量与东太湖来水2-MIB浓度不同区间组合下的金泽水库与太浦河枢纽联合调度策略。研究成果可为提高上海市金泽水库取水安全保障提供技术支撑,并为平原河网地区供水调度提供参考。 展开更多

水泵的泥沙磨损问题是泵站运行管理过程中需要重点考虑的问题之一,在含沙水流冲刷作用下,水泵过流部件易产生明显磨损,从而缩短水泵的使用寿命,降低泵站的运行效率。以引汉济渭工程黄金峡水利枢纽为例,通过在水力机械磨蚀测试系统——... 水泵的泥沙磨损问题是泵站运行管理过程中需要重点考虑的问题之一,在含沙水流冲刷作用下,水泵过流部件易产生明显磨损,从而缩短水泵的使用寿命,降低泵站的运行效率。以引汉济渭工程黄金峡水利枢纽为例,通过在水力机械磨蚀测试系统——旋转圆盘循环工位上进行泥沙磨损试验,探究磨损部件不同备选材料的泥沙磨损特性,结果表明:材料磨损深度随测点半径的增大而增大,泥沙中值粒径的大小对磨损的影响显著,磨损深度随泥沙中值粒径增大而增大。同时根据试验结果,构建了材料磨损率关系式,估算了备选材料的磨损量,比选出了合适的水泵母材。最终,基于研究成果提出了减小水泵泥沙磨损的措施建议,对减缓水泵磨损,降低泵站后期运行和维护费用具有重要意义。 展开更多

Spatial and temporal variation of fish assemblages were investigated seasonally from May 2007 to February 2008 across 11 study sites in a subtropical small stream, the Puxi Stream, of the Huangshan Mountain. Along the longitudinal gradient from headwater to downstream, fish species richness and abundance increased gradually, but then decreased significantly at the lower reaches. The highest species richness and abundance were observed in August and the lowest in February. Based on analysis of similarities (ANOSIM), fish assemblages were significantly different in spatial variation but not in temporal variation. Although differences were observed both among sites and among stream orders, the lower R value in order-variation suggested stream order was not the optimal factor explaining the spatial variation of fish assemblages. In addition, dam construction did not significantly alter fish assemblages in the sites adjacent to and immediately downstream to dams. Using cluster analysis and non-metric Multi Dimensional Scaling analysis (NMS), assemblages were separated into three groups at a Bray-Curtis similarity value of 42%: the upper, middle and lower groups. Following analysis of similarity percentages of species contributions (SIM- PER), shifts in occurrence or abundance of S. curriculus, Z. platypus, R. bitterling and A. fasciatus contributed most to the differences amongst the three groups. Standard Deviation Redundancy Analysis (RDA) suggested that habitat structure (such as elevation, substrate, and flow velocity) contributed to the spatial and temporal pattem of fish assemblages in the Puxi Stream. In conclusion, the fish assemblages in Puxi Stream presented significant spatial but not temporal variation. Human disturbance has perhaps induced the decrease in species diversity in the lower reaches. However, no significant change was observed for fish assemblages in sites far from and immediately downstream from low-head dams [Current Zoology 56 (6): 670-677, 2010]. 展开更多

The high-speed supercritical flow in steeply sloped channels contains a significant amount of hydro-kinetic energy. A novel, horizontal axis, spillway turbine as presented in this paper attempts to convert that energy into electricity. We report on the turbine’s design and experimental testing. Its intended use is in low-head, low-flow, manmade, concrete-lined channels such as chutes, spillways and other similar steeply sloped open-channels. The design lends itself from an impulse turbine runner but without a pipe or a nozzle. The spillway turbine consists of 2 main components: 1) the runner and 2) an accelerator channel that directs the water towards the runner’s blades. The runner, once fitted with Pelton-inspired “cup inserts” shows performance improvements both in terms of efficiency and specific speeds. The specific speed and the speed factors calculated confirm that this novel spillway turbine runner can be categorized as an impulse turbine. The maximum efficiency obtained during laboratory testing is 43.4% and hence competes well with standard hydrokinetic turbines. 展开更多
