In order to minimise the cost of constructing low volume roads (LVRs), it is essential that optimum use is made of locally available, naturally occurring materials. However, conflicts often arise between material acceptability, as defined by conventional test methods and specifications, and material suitability in terms of actual engineering performance as a “fit-for-purpose” road construction material. To avoid such conflicts, it is crucial to adopt appropriate test methods and specifications for selecting construction materials. This paper presents a materials evaluation framework for optimizing the utilisation of materials in LVR pavements based on the use of the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP). This approach enables materials to be selected on the basis of their “fitness-for-purpose”. It avoids suitable materials from being rejected based on one or other of the traditionally specified parameters not being complied with, even though their strength, as measured by the DCP penetration rate (DN value in mm/blow) of the soil, may be adequate. Investigations of the properties of a wide range of locally available materials that have been used successfully in the construction of LVRs have confirmed the validity of the materials evaluation framework. 展开更多

Mini light-emitting diodes(Mini-LEDs)show great application potential in high-end displays owing to their superior pixel density,brightness,responsiveness,and efficiency.However,current packaging materials for Mini-LEDs are predominantly thermally cured,which is energy-and time-consuming and can adversely affect electronic components.In this study,a novel UV-curable silicone resin containing phenyl,disulfide,and acryloyl groups(SPASR)is developed from commercially available siloxanes.The resin exhibits a refractive index(n_(d))higher than 1.5,and it can be cured within 30 s under UV irradiation.After curing,it exhibits an optical transparency exceeding 92%,a lap adhesion strength of up to1.84 MPa,and good thermostability(T_(5%)>265℃).Notably,the volume shrinkage is less than 4.83%,attributed to the release of photopolymerization stress via UV-induced disulfide metathesis during UV curing.Mini-LEDs encapsulated with this resin show luminescence properties comparable to those of conventional thermally-cured sealants,and show excellent sealability wihtout visible penetration after being immersed in red ink for 12 h.Consequently,these excellent properties make the SPASR resin an ideal candidate for microelectronic encapsulation,offering a more reliable and efficient solution for the electronics industry. 展开更多

Ship operations are crucial to global trade,and their decarbonization is essential to mitigate climate change.This study evaluates the economic viability of existing and emerging decarbonization technologies in maritime shipping using the levelized cost of energy methodology.It includes a detailed comparative analysis based on essential criteria and sensitivity assessments to highlight the economic impacts of technological advancements.Key factors influencing total costs include fuel costs,carbon pricing,and energy demands for carbon capture.The findings reveal that methanol is more cost-effective than heavy fuel oil(HFO)when priced below 3000 CNY/t,assuming HFO costs 4400 CNY/t.Additionally,methanol with post-combustion carbon capture is less expensive than pre-combustion carbon capture.When carbon prices rise above 480 CNY/t,carbon capture technologies prove more economical than purchasing carbon emission allowances for HFO and liquefied natural gas.Enhanc-ing the use of exhaust gas waste heat is recommended for cost savings.Post-combustion carbon capture also shows greater efficiency,requiring about 1.1 GJ/t less energy than pre-combustion methods,leading to lower overall costs.Future research should focus on market mechanisms to stabilize fuel prices and develop less energy-intensive carbon capture technologies.This study offers critical insights into effective decarbonization strategies for advancing global maritime trade in the present and future. 展开更多

[Objectives]To investigate the clinical efficacy of core stability training combined with conventional rehabilitation in the functional recovery of patients suffering from chronic low back pain.[Methods]A randomized controlled trial design was employed in this study.Ninety patients with chronic low back pain were recruited and randomly assigned to either a control group(n=45),which received conventional rehabilitation,or an experimental group(n=45),which received conventional rehabilitation combined with core stability training.Both groups underwent treatment for 6 weeks.Assessments were conducted using the visual analogue scale(VAS),Oswestry disability index(ODI),and finger-to-floor test prior to treatment,6 weeks following treatment,and during the follow-up period,respectively.[Results]Prior to treatment,no statistically significant differences were observed between the two patient groups in terms of general information and various baseline measurements(P>0.05).Following 6 weeks of treatment and throughout the follow-up period,both groups demonstrated significant improvements in VAS scores,ODI scores,and lumbar anteflexion range of motion compared to baseline measurements(P<0.05).Notably,the magnitude of improvement in the experimental group exceeded that of the control group,with this inter-group difference reaching statistical significance(P<0.05).No serious adverse reactions were reported during the treatment process.[Conclusions]Core stability training combined with conventional rehabilitation can significantly enhance the alleviation of pain and functional impairments in patients suffering from chronic low back pain.This approach holds valuable implications for the optimization of rehabilitation treatment protocols. 展开更多

The effect of plasma and charged particle interaction with spacecraft in a low Earth orbit(LEO)environment leads to ion focusing and the formation of an ion void in the downstream region as a result of charging.Simulations and investigations using a fixed potential imposed on the spacecraft showed the nonsignificance of geophysical parameter changes to ion focusing.Variation of the temperature ratio(T_(r))contributed only to local ion focusing and manifested as two-ion streamers dispersed at the upper and lower edges of the spacecraft-the outermost layers of the satellite structure at the top and bottom,respectively.A simulation involving changing the ambient plasma density(N_(p))also showed the formation of local ion focusing,in which ions were more concentrated as the density increased.Furthermore,auroral electron density(N_(ae))variation had no clear impact on ion focusing,as indicated by static two-ion structures in the wake field.However,variation of the object potential(ϕ)strongly affected ion focusing formation,leading to distortion of the initial ion void region behind the spacecraft.The formation of ion focusing in this study was subject to the electric field produced by the object potential and the ambipolar electric field resulting from plasma expansion in the downstream region. 展开更多

Field trials were performed to evaluate various techniques for measuring spray deposition and aerial drift during spray application to paddy field.The application of a spraying agent containing the fluorescent dye Rhodamine-B was applied by an unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)which flew at a height of 5 m,a speed of 3 m/s,and the wind speed of 3 m/s.The results showed that because the downdraft produced by a helicopter rotor increased the penetrability of crops,there is a higher deposition on the upper layer and the under layer than the traditional spraying.The average deposition on the upper layer accounts for 28% of the total spraying,the deposition on the under layer accounts for 26% of the total spraying.The deposition on the under layer takes up 92.8% of the deposition on the upper layer.Droplets drift data showed that the drift of non-target area took up 12.9% of the total liquid spray.The 90% drifting droplets were located within a range of 8 m of the target area;the drift quantity was almost zero at a distance of 50 m away from the treated area. 展开更多

A comparative subgrade moduli study is carried out by static and dynamic deflection methods using lightweight deflectometer and conventional Benkelman beam deflec-tometer on low volume road.Field and laboratory tests are performed at 40 test locations on in-service road of 2 km stretch that contains three common types of cohesive soils(CH,CI,and CL).Pavement static and dynamic responses are estimated to ascertain static,backcalculated,and composite moduli of subgrade.The backcalculated and composite moduli of subgrade is validated at given moisture content using repeated triaxial test.Static moduli values are on lower side as compared with dynamic moduli values whereas the composite,and laboratory moduli of subgrade are approximately consistent with 2%to 7%variation,respectively.Correlation analyses between static and dynamic moduli of different types of subgrade soils depict good correlation of determination(R2)varies between 0.75 and 0.91.Subsequently,validation of static moduli with California bearing ratio(CBR)related subgrade moduli shows moderate correlation of 0.67 to 0.74 whereas dynamic moduli shows good correlation of 0.74 to 0.93 for different types of soils,respectively.Therefore,the comparative analysis shows that lightweight deflectometer provides reliable subgrade moduli values,and it can be used as a quick subgrade strength evaluating tool for low volume roads. 展开更多

Low volume roads make up about 69% of road miles in the United States. Estimating traffic on the low volume roads is a cost-effective alternative to taking traffic counts. This is because traditional traffic counts are expensive and impractical for low priority roads. The purpose of this paper is to present the development of two alternative means of cost- effectively estimating traffic volumes for low volume roads in Wyoming and to make recommendations for their implementation. The study methodology involves reviewing existing studies, identifying data sources, and carrying out the model development. The utility of the models developed were then verified by comparing actual traffic volumes to those predicted by the model. The study resulted in two regression models that are inexpensive and easy to implement. The first regression model was a linear regression model that utilized pavement type, access to highways, predominant land use types, and population to estimate traffic volume. In verifying the model, an R^2 value of 0.64 and a root mean square error of 73.4% were obtained. The second model was a logistic regression model that identified the level of traffic on roads using five thresholds or levels. The logistic regression model was verified by estimating traffic volume thresholds and determining the percentage of roads that were accurately classified as belonging to the given thresholds. For the five thresholds, the percentage of roads classified correctly ranged from 79% to 88%. In conclusion, the verification of the models indicated both model types to be useful for accurate and cost-effective estimation of traffic volumes for low volume Wyoming roads. The models developed were recommended for use in traffic volume estimations for low volume roads in pavement management and environmental impact assessment studies. 展开更多

Exploring Crowdsourced Hard—Acceleration and Braking Event Data for Evaluating Safety Performance of Low-Volume Rural Highways in Iowa

There are over four million miles of two-lane roadways across the United States, of which a substantial portion is low-volume roads (LVR). Traditionally, most traffic safety efforts and countermeasures focus on high-volume high-crash urban locations. This is because LVRs cover an extensive area, and the rarity of crashes makes it challenging to use crash data to monitor the safety performance of LVRs regularly. In addition, obtaining up-to-date roadway information, such as pavement or shoulder conditions of an extensive LVR network, can be exceptionally difficult. In recent times, crowdsourced hard-acceleration and braking event data have become commercially available, which can provide precise geolocation information and can be readily acquired from different vendors. The present paper examines the potential use of this data to identify opportunities to monitor the safety of LVRs. This research examined approximately 12 million hard-acceleration and hard-braking events over a 3-months period and 26,743 crashes, including 9373 fatal injuries over the past 5-year period. The study found a moderate correlation between hard acceleration/hard-braking events with historical crash events. This study conducted a hot spot analysis using hard-acceleration/hard-braking and crash datasets. Hotspot analysis detected spatial clusters of high-risk crash locations and detected 848 common high-risk sites. Finally, this paper proposes a combined ranking scheme that simultaneously considers historical crash events and hard-acceleration/hard-braking events. The research concludes by suggesting that agencies can potentially use the hard-acceleration and hard-braking event dataset along with the historical crash dataset to effectively supervise the safety performance of the vast network of LVRs more frequently. 展开更多

Objective:To study the effects of prolonging small feeding volumes early in life on the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis(NEC)in very low birth weight(VLBW)preterm infants.Methods:A total of 128 VLBW infants who could not be breastfed were assigned into the experimental group(63 cases)and the control group(65 cases)using a random number table.The experiment group was fed 12 mL/(kg·d)on day 1 which was increased to 24 mL/(kg·d)for the first 10 study days.The control group was fed 12 mL/(kg·d)for the first 14e48 hours.Then,the feeding volume increased by 24-36 mL/(kg·d)up to 140e160 mL/(kg·d)and maintained until the 10th day after birth.The incidence of feeding intolerance and NEC,duration of hospitalization,time to full enteral feedings,incidence of intrahepatic cholestasis,and the levels of gastrin and motilin in serum were assessed.Results:The incidence of feeding intolerance was significantly lower in the experimental group compared with the control group(15.87% vs.33.84%).There was a significant reduction in the incidence of NEC between the experimental and control groups(7.9% vs.16% in the control group).Conclusion:A protocol that prolongs small feeding volumes early in life can reduce the incidence and severity of NEC,but still warrants further study. 展开更多

To evaluate the fracturing effect and dynamic change process after volume fracturing with vertical wells in low permeability oil reservoirs, an oil-water two-phase flow model and a well model are built. On this basis, an evaluation method of fracturing effect based on production data and fracturing fluid backflow data is established, and the method is used to analyze some field cases. The vicinity area of main fracture after fracturing is divided into different stimulated regions. The permeability and area of different regions are used to characterize the stimulation strength and scale of the fracture network. The conductivity of stimulated region is defined as the product of the permeability and area of the stimulated region. Through parameter sensitivity analysis, it is found that half-length of the fracture and the permeability of the core area mainly affect the flow law near the well, that is, the early stage of production;while matrix permeability mainly affects the flow law at the far end of the fracture. Taking a typical old well in Changqing Oilfield as an example, the fracturing effect and its changes after two rounds of volume fracturing in this well are evaluated. It is found that with the increase of production time after the first volume fracturing, the permeability and conductivity of stimulated area gradually decreased, and the fracturing effect gradually decreased until disappeared;after the second volume fracturing, the permeability and conductivity of stimulated area increased significantly again. 展开更多

Electromagnetic interference(EMI)shielding materials with superior shielding efficiency and low-reflection properties hold promising potential for utilization across electronic components,precision instruments,and fifth-generation communication equipment.In this study,multistage microcellular waterborne polyurethane(WPU)composites were constructed via gradient induction,layer-by-layer casting,and supercritical carbon dioxide foaming.The gradient-structured WPU/ironcobalt loaded reduced graphene oxide(FeCo@rGO)foam serves as an impedance-matched absorption layer,while the highly conductive WPU/silver loaded glass microspheres(Ag@GM)layer is employed as a reflection layer.Thanks to the incorporation of an asymmetric structure,as well as the introduction of gradient and porous configurations,the composite foam demonstrates excellent conductivity,outstanding EMI SE(74.9 dB),and minimal reflection characteristics(35.28%)in 8.2-12.4 GHz,implying that more than 99.99999%of electromagnetic(EM)waves were blocked and only 35.28%were reflected to the external environment.Interestingly,the reflectivity of the composite foam is reduced to 0.41%at 10.88 GHz due to the resonance for incident and reflected EM waves.Beyond that,the composite foam is characterized by low density(0.47 g/cm^(3))and great stability of EMI shielding properties.This work offers a viable approach for craft-ing lightweight,highly shielding,and minimally reflective EMI shielding composites. 展开更多

Zinc-ion batteries(ZIBs)are inexpensive and safe,but side reactions on the Zn anode and Zn dendrite growth hinder their practical applications.In this study,1,3,5-triformylphloroglycerol(Tp)and various diamine monomers(p-phenylenediamine(Pa),benzidine(BD),and 4,4"-diamino-p-terphenyl(DATP))were used to synthesize a series of two-dimensional covalent-organic frameworks(COFs).The resulting COFs were named TpPa,TpBD,and TpDATP,respectively,and they showed uniform zincophilic sites,different pore sizes,and high Young's moduli on the Zn anode.Among them,TpPa and TpBD showed lower surface work functions and higher ion transfer numbers,which were conducive to uniform galvanizing/stripping zinc and inhibited dendrite growth.Theoretical calculations showed that TpPa and TpBD had wider negative potential region and greater adsorption capacity for Zn2+than TpDATP,providing more electron donor sites to coordinate with Zn^(2+).Symmetric cells protected by TpPa and TpBD stably cycled for more than 2300 h,whereas TpDATP@Zn and the bare zinc symmetric cells failed after around 150 and200 h.The full cells containing TpPa and TpBD modification layers also showed excellent cycling capacity at 1 A/g.This study provides comprehensive insights into the construction of highly reversible Zn anodes via COF modification layers for advanced rechargeable ZIBs. 展开更多

Two anaerobic ammonia oxidation(anammox)systems,one with adding nano-scale zerovalent iron modified biochar(nZVI@BC)and the other with adding biochar,were constructed to explore the feasibility of nZVI@BC for enhancing the resistance of low-nitrogen anammox processes to low temperatures.The results showed that the average nitrogen removal efficiency with nZVI@BC addition at lowtemperatureswas maintained at about 80%,while that with biochar addition gradually decreased to 69.49%.The heme-c content of biomass with nZVI@BC was significantly higher by 36.60%-91.45%.Additional,nZVI@BC addition resulted in more extracellular polymeric substances,better biomass granulation,and a higher abundance of anammox bacteria.In particularly,anammox genes hzsA/B/C,hzo and hdh played a pivotal role in maintaining nitrogen removal performance at 15℃.These findings suggest that nZVI@BC has the potential to enhance the resistance of low-nitrogen anammox processes to low temperatures,making it a valuable approach for practical applications in low-nitrogen and low-temperature wastewater treatment. 展开更多

Lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)face significant limitations in low-temperature environments,with the slow interfacial de-solvation process and the hindered Li+transport through the interphase layer emerging as key obstacles beyond the issue of ionic conductivity.This investigation unveils a novel formulation that constructs an anion-rich solvation sheath within strong solvents,effectively addressing all three of these challenges to bolster low-temperature performance.The developed electrolyte,characterized by an enhanced concentration of contact ion pairs(CIPs)and aggregates(AGGs),facilitates the formation of an inorganic-rich interphase layer on the anode and cathode particles.This promotes de-solvation at low temperatures and stabilizes the electrode-electrolyte interphase.Full cells composed of LiNi_(0.6)Co_(0.2)Mn_(0.2)O_(2)(NCM622)and graphite,when equipped with this electrolyte,showcase remarkable cycle stability and capacity retention,with 93.3% retention after 500 cycles at room temperature(RT)and 95.5%after 120 cycles at -20℃.This study validates the utility of the anion-rich solvation sheath in strong solvents as a strategy for the development of low-temperature electrolytes. 展开更多
