Background:Many disease-specific factors such as muscular weakness, increased muscle stiffness, varying postural strategies, and changes in postural reflexes have been shown to lead to postural instability and fall risk in people with Parkinson's disease(PD).Recently, analytical techniques, inspired by the dynamical systems perspective on movement control and coordination, have been used to examine the mechanisms underlying the dynamics of postural declines and the emergence of postural instabilities in people with PD.Methods:A wavelet-based technique was used to identify limit cycle oscillations(LCOs) in the anterior–posterior(AP) postural sway of people with mild PD(n = 10) compared to age-matched controls(n = 10).Participants stood on a foam and on a rigid surface while completing a dual task(speaking). Results:There was no significant difference in the root mean square of center of pressure between groups.Three out of 10 participants with PD demonstrated LCOs on the foam surface, while none in the control group demonstrated LCOs.An inverted pendulum model of bipedal stance was used to demonstrate that LCOs occur due to disease-specific changes associated with PD:time-delay and neuromuscular feedback gain. Conclusion:Overall, the LCO analysis and mathematical model appear to capture the subtle postural instabilities associated with mild PD.In addition, these findings provide insights into the mechanisms that lead to the emergence of unstable posture in patients with PD. 展开更多

The paper considers the methodology for a comprehensive analysis of the stability of an open pit-dump system, using limit equilibrium(LEM)and finite element(FEM)methods in the Russian CAE(computer-aided engineering)software Fidesys. It briefly highlights the issues of comparing limit equilibrium methods using the VNIMI(Research Institute of Geomechanics and Mine Surveying-Intersectoral Scientific Center"VNIMI")methodology and a specialized software product with numerical methods. The main focus of this study is to compare the results of the stability analysis in the volumetric model of the open pit-dump system using limit equilibrium and finite element methods in the CAE software Fidesys. It was found that, when modeling the combined operation of an open pit-dump system in complex terrain, both methods should be used,as each has its own advantages. The finite element method, for instance, has certain features that are not present in the calculations using the limit equilibrium approach. As a key scientific contribution, this paper introduces an automation program for calculating the stability of open-pit walls using the limit equilibrium method in CAE Fidesys, which was not previously integrated in the original software. The calculations performed with the use of this newly developed module were compared to those obtained from other widely used software solutions available on the market. The findings demonstrate a remarkable level of convergence in the calculation results for all relevant parameters, including the safety factor, localization, instability type, and deformation. The proposed approach i mproves the accuracy of calculati ons and ensures consistency between the higher stress design zones and the actual deformation and fracture patterns. It also enhances the ability to predict the behavior of rock mass when calculating stability parameters for facilities, both during operation and desi gn. 展开更多

Dangerous rock masses in cold regions subjected to repeated freeze–thaw cycles can cause progressive deterioration in structural planes and rock mechanical properties, which significantly reduces the overall stability and often triggers collapses or landslides.Existing studies focus mostly on singlescale or single-factor analyses but cannot fully capture the coupled mechanisms driving instability under freeze-thaw conditions. This study aimed to establish a theoretical framework to quantitatively characterize the evolution of rock mass stability, thereby providing a sound basis for hazard prediction and prevention.By integrating limit equilibrium theory with rock frost heave and circular hole expansion theory, mechanical models for sliding-and toppling-type dangerous rock masses were established.Three key factors were incorporated:frost heave forces acting on throughgoing structural planes, rock property deterioration in nonpenetrative sections, and progressive freezing depth development.A theoretical relationship between the stability coefficient and the number of freeze-thaw cycles was derived.By considering the Zimei Peaks rock masses in Gansu Province as the case study and conducting parametric analyses, the results revealed that the stability coefficient rapidly decreases during the initial cycles, followed by a slower decrease and eventual stabilization. The coefficient decreased 4.5 times more during the first 15 cycles than during the subsequent 15 cycles. Moreover, stability degradation was strongly influenced by the freezing temperature, initial porosity, and rock debris loss ratio, with critical thresholds determined at a 3.8%porosity and a 0.83 debris loss ratio. The findings indicated that stability deterioration is governed by the coupled effects of frost heave loading, microstructural damage accumulation, and freezing depth development, with clear stagedependent and threshold-driven patterns. This work provides not only a quantitative explanation of instability mechanisms in cold-region rock masses but also practical guidance for engineering stability assessment and disaster mitigation. 展开更多

The increasing occurrence of sinkholes caused by water main bursts has attracted significant research attention in recent years. This study addresses the gap in evaluating soil blowout stability resulting from water main failures by investigating the three-dimensional stability of blowouts with circular, hemispherical, and spherical openings.Advanced finite element limit analysis(FELA)combined with adaptive meshing is employed to analyze critical factors, including soil cover depth, surcharge pressure, and internal water pressure, that contribute to blowout failure. In addition, dimensionless ratios are used throughout the paper to assess the influence of these factors.Numerical findings are rigorously validated, ensuring reliability and accuracy.Practical design charts are provided to accommodate a wide range of design scenarios, offering valuable guidance for engineers. This study introduces a pioneering sinkhole simulation methodology, leading to the understanding of three-dimensional blowout stability mechanisms. 展开更多

Iron-chromium flow batteries(ICRFBs)have emerged as an ideal large-scale energy storage device with broad application prospects in recent years.Enhancement of the Cr^(3+)/Cr^(2+)redox reaction activity and inhibition of the hydrogen evolution side reaction(HER)are essential for the development of ICRFBs and require a novel catalyst design. However, elucidating the underlying mechanisms for modulating catalyst behaviors remains an unresolved challenge. Here,we show a novel precisely controlled preparation of a novel thermal-treated carbon cloth electrode with a uniform deposit of low-cost indium catalyst particles. The density functional theory analysis reveals the In catalyst has a significant adsorption effect on the reactants and improves the redox reaction activity of Cr^(3+)/Cr^(2+).Moreover,H+is more easily absorbed on the surface of the catalyst with a high migration energy barrier, thereby inhibiting the occurrence of HER.The assembled ICRFBs have an average energy efficiency of 83.91%at 140 mA cm^(-2),and this method minimizes the electrodeposition process and cleans the last obstacle for industry long cycle operation requirements. The ICRFBs exhibit exceptional long-term stability with an energy efficiency decay rate of 0.011%per cycle at 1000 cycles, the lowest ICRFBs reported so far. Therefore, this study provides a promising strategy for developing ICRFBs with low costs and long cycle life. 展开更多

Sudden and unforeseen seismic failures of coal mine overburden(OB)dump slopes interrupt mining operations, cause loss of lives and delay the production of coal.Consideration of the spatial heterogeneity of OB dump materials is imperative for an adequate evaluation of the seismic stability of OB dump slopes. In this study,pseudo-static seismic stability analyses are carried out for an OB dump slope by considering the material parameters obtained from an insitu field investigation.Spatial heterogeneity is simulated through use of the random finite element method(RFEM)and the random limit equilibrium method(RLEM)and a comparative study is presented.Combinations of horizontal and vertical spatial correlation lengths were considered for simulating isotropic and anisotropic random fields within the OB dump slope.Seismic performances of the slope have been reported through the probability of failure and reliability index. It was observed that the RLEM approach overestimates failure probability(P_(f))by considering seismic stability with spatial heterogeneity. The P_(f)was observed to increase with an increase in the coefficient of variation of friction angle of the dump materials.Further,it was inferred that the RLEM approach may not be adequately applicable for assessing the seismic stability of an OB dump slope for a horizontal seismic coefficient that is more than or equal to 0.1. 展开更多

This study proposes an alternative calculation mode for stresses on the slip surface(SS).The calculation of the normal stress(NS)on the SS involves examining its composition and expanding its unknown using the Taylor series. This expansion enables the reasonable construction of a function describing the NS on the SS.Additionally,by directly incorporating the nonlinear Generalized Hoke-Brown(GHB)strength criterion and utilizing the slope factor of safety(FOS)definition,a function of the shear stress on the SS is derived. This function considers the mutual feedback mechanism between the NS and strength parameters of the SS.The stress constraints conditions are then introduced at both ends of the SS based on the spatial stress relation of one point.Determining the slope FOS and stress solution for the SS involves considering the mechanical equilibrium conditions and the stress constraint conditions satisfied by the sliding body. The proposed approach successfully simulates the tension-shear stress zone near the slope top and provides an intuitive description of the concentration effect of compression-shear stress of the SS near the slope toe.Furthermore, compared to other methods, the present method demonstrates superior processing capabilities for the embedded nonlinear GHB strength criterion. 展开更多

Traditional Pt/C electrode materials are prone to corrosion and detachment during H_(2)S detection, leading to a decrease in fuel cell-type sensor performance. Here,a high-performance H_(2)S sensor based on Pt loaded Ti_(3)C_(2)electrode material with-O/-OH terminal groups was designed and prepared.Experimental tests showed that the Pt/Ti_(3)C_(2)sensor has good sensitivity(0.162μA/ppm)and a very low detection limit to H_(2)S(10 ppb). After 90 days of stability testing, the response of the Pt/Ti_(3)C_(2)sensor shows a smaller decrease of 2%compared to that of the Pt/C sensor(22.9%).Meanwhile,the sensor also has high selectivity and repeatability. The density functional theory(DFT)calculation combined with the experiment results revealed that the improved H_(2)S sensing mechanism is attributed to the fact that the strong interaction between Pt and Ti_(3)C_(2)via the Pt-O-Ti bonding can reduce the formation energy of Pt and Ti_(3)C_(2),ultimately prolonging the sensor’s service life.Furthermore, the catalytic property of Pt can decrease the adsorption energy and dissociation barrier of H_(2)S on Pt/Ti_(3)C_(2)surface,greatly enhance the ability to generate protons and effectively transfer charges, realizing good sensitivity and high selectivity of the sensor. The sensor works at room temperature, making it very promising in the field of H_(2)S detection in future. 展开更多

To satisfy the demands of modern society for high-energy–density sulfide-based all-solid-state lithium batteries(ASSLBs),Ni-rich cathode materials have gained much attention for their high capacity and energy density. However, their practical deployment is hindered by accelerated interface degradation and capacity decay originating from surface oxygen release and lattice oxygen activation during prolonged cycling. In this study,Ti_(x)NbB_((1−x))C_(2)was successfully coated on the surface of LiNi_(0.94)Co_(0.05)Mn_(0.01)O_(2).Density functional theory(DFT)calculations first elucidate a“point-to-point”anchoring mechanism where each surface oxygen atom coordinates with single species(Ti/Nb/B)offered by Ti_(x)NbB_((1−x))C_(2),which forms robust O–M bonds and sustain a stable interface structure. The electron energy loss spectroscopy(EELS)reveals the segregation of Ti/Nb toward subsurface layers during cycling, creating an optimized lattice oxygen coordination environment and suppressing oxygen activation. The dual oxygen stabilization mechanism dramatically improves the reversibility of phase transition and the structural stability of the Ni-rich cathode materials.Moreover,Ti_(x)NbB_((1−x))C_(2)as the protective layer decreases mechanical strain and suppresses the parasitic reactions.Consequently, the engineered cathode delivers 91%capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 0.3 C,suggesting excellent cycling stability. The research delivers a new design philosophy for the coating layer that can stabilize surface oxygen.Furthermore, the atomistic understanding of the structure–property relationship of the Ni-rich cathode materials provides valuable guidance for the future design of new cathode materials with superior structural stability in ASSLBs. 展开更多

By translating the system to be considered into the Lienard type and by using some related properties, we obtain several theorems with suitable conditions coefficients of the system, under which we prove that the system has at most two limit cycles. Multi-layer slopes are widely found in clay residue receiving fields.A generalized horizontal slice method(GHSM)for assessing the stability of multi-layer slopes that considers the energy dissipation between adjacent horizontal slices is presented. In view of the upper-bound limit analysis theory, the energy equation is derived and the ultimate failure mode is generated by comparing the sliding surface passing through the slope toe(mode A)with that below(mode B).In addition, the influence of the number of slices on the stability coefficients in the GHSM is studied and the stable value is obtained.Compared to the original method(Chen’s method),the GHSM can acquire more precise results, which takes into account the energy dissipation in the inner sliding soil mass. Moreover, the GHSM,limit equilibrium method(LEM)and numerical simulation method(NSM)are applied to analyze the stability of a multi-layer slope with different slope angles and the results of the safety factor and failure mode are very close in each case. The ultimate failure modes are shown to be mode B when the slope angle is not more than 28°.It illustrates that the determination of the ultimate sliding surface requires comparison of multiple failure modes, not only mode A. 展开更多

Reinforcement of slopes using soil nailing can effectively improve slope stability, and it has been widely used in upgrading cut slopes. Based on the assumptions of stresses on the slip surface, a new method for analyzing the stability of a slope reinforced with soil nails was established in the limit equilibrium theory framework, by considering that slope sliding occurs owing to shear failure of the slip surface, which subjects to Mohr–Coulomb(M–C) strength criterion. Meanwhile, in order to easily analyze the stability of a soil nailed slope in actual engineering and facilitate optimum design of parameters for soil nailing, factor of safety(FOS) contour curve charts were drawn on the basis of the established linear proportional relationship between the spacing of soil nails and slope height, and the length of soil nails and slope height. Then, by analyzing and verifying the results obtained from classic examples, some conclusions can be got as follows: 1) The results obtained from the current method are close to those obtained from the traditional limit equilibrium methods, and the current method can provide a strict solution for the slope FOS as it satisfies all the static equilibrium conditions of a sliding body, thus confirming the feasibility of the current method; 2) The slope FOS contour curve charts can be used not only to reliably analyze the stability of a soil nailed slope, but also to design optimally the parameters of soil nailing for the slope with a certain safety requirement. 展开更多

The combined influence of nonlinearity and dilation on slope stability was evaluated using the upper-bound limit analysis theorem. The mechanism of slope collapse was analyzed by dividing it into arbitrary discrete soil blocks with the nonlinear Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion and nonassociated flow rule. The multipoint tangent(multi-tangent) technique was used to analyze the slope stability by linearizing the nonlinear failure criterion.A general expression for the slope safety factor was derived based on the virtual work principle and the strength reduction technique, and the global slope safety factor can be obtained by the optimization method of nonlinear sequential quadratic programming. The results show better agreement with previous research result when the nonlinear failure criterion reduces to a linear failure criterion or the non-associated flow rule reduces to an associated flow rule, which demonstrates the rationality of the presented method.Slope safety factors calculated by the multi-tangent inclined-slices technique were smaller than those obtained by the traditional single-tangent inclined-slices technique. The results show that the multi-tangent inclined-slices technique is a safe and effective method of slope stability limit analysis. The combined effect of nonlinearity and dilation on slope stability was analyzed, and the parameter analysis indicates that nonlinearity and dilation have significant influence on the result of slope stability analysis. 展开更多

Based on the piston theory of supersonic flow and the energy method, the flutter motion equations of a two-dimensional wing with cubic stiffness in the pitching direction are established. The aeroelastic system contains both structural and aerodynamic nonlinearities. Hopf bifurcation theory is used to analyze the flutter speed of the system. The effects of system parameters on the flutter speed are studied. The 4th order Runge-Kutta method is used to calculate the stable limit cycle responses and chaotic motions of the aeroelastic system. Results show that the number and the stability of equilibrium points of the system vary with the increase of flow speed. Besides the simple limit cycle response of period 1, there are also period-doubling responses and chaotic motions in the flutter system. The route leading to chaos in the aeroelastic model used here is the period-doubling bifurcation. The chaotic motions in the system occur only when the flow speed is higher than the linear divergent speed and the initial condition is very small. Moreover, the flow speed regions in which the system behaves chaos axe very narrow. 展开更多

This paper presents a novel mechanical attachment, i.e., nonlinear energy sink (NES), for suppressing the limit cycle oscillation (LCO) of an airfoil. The dynamic responses of a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) airfoil coupled with an NES are studied with the harmonic balance method. Different structure parameters of the NES, i.e., mass ratio between the NES and airfoil, NES offset, NES damping, and nonlinear stiffness in the NES, are chosen for studying the effect of the LCO suppression on an aeroelastic system with a supercritical Hopf bifurcation or subcritical Hopf bifurcation, respectively. The results show that the structural parameters of the NES have different influence on the supercritical Hopf bifurcation system and the subcritical Hopf bifurcation system. 展开更多
