Although many different views of social media coexist in the field of information systems (IS), such the- ories are usually not introduced in a consistent framework based on philosophical foundations, This paper introduces the dimensions of lifeworld and consideration of others, The concept of lifeworld includes Descartes' rationality and Heidegger's historicity, and consideration of others is based on instru- mentalism and Heidegger's "being-with," These philosophical foundations elaborate a framework where different archetypal theories applied to social media may he compared: Goffman's presentation of sell Bourdieu's social capital, Sartre's existential project, and Heidegger's "shared-world," While Goffman has become a frequent reference in social media, the three other references are innovative in IS research, The concepts of these four theories of social media are compared with empirical findings in IS literature, While some of these concepts match the empirical findings, some other concepts have not yet been inves- tigated in the use of social media, suggesting future research directions, 展开更多

The Disastrous Lifeworld: A Phenomenological Consideration of Safety, Resilience, and Vulnerability

The lifeworld is, according to Husserl, the horizon of all our experiences, in the sense that it is the background environment of human being's competences, practices, and attitudes. The lifewofld is the intersubjective, pre-given in the ontie sense, and immediately perceived world of everyday life. Although Husserl has distinguished the lifeworld from the objective world that natural science describes with mathematical methods, we cannot divide the world on the practical level into the perceived world of ordinary life and the scientific world. The characteristic of human beings is that they live in the environment which they have enormously changed. Modem science has accelerated this tendency: the contemporary world is constructed so deeply scientifically and technologically. Accordingly, as Ulrich Beck pointed out, the risk of the technologically constructed world is often invisible/unperceivable. The disaster at Fukushima nuclear power plants is a terrible testament of this kind of risk. In order for a land to become the lifeworld of meaningful human interactions, the land should be first of all safe and livable for all of us. The risk calculation made by Tokyo Electric Power Company was shown to be sloppy and deceptive. The contemporary techno-science should be democratically governed and watched by all kinds of stakeholders, and never be left it to the specialists of science. For re-establishing the livable and sustainable lifeworld, safety, resilience, and vulnerability should be the fundamental values. And, the autonomy of the local residents, including the most vulnerable people, through the democratization of the techno-science must be the fundamental value to establish and protect such a safe environment. 展开更多

Civilization is defined as "the survival of the weak". It is stressed that this definition can be applied to man, animal and every living being. Lie as "someone else's truth" and art as "the process of the creation of 'copies of the copies of nature'" are considered to be the weak man's tools for survival. The author argues that purpose of erotic scenes and scenes of hunting (death and violence) both in the past and in the present is the excitation at the woman of desire to reproduction. 展开更多

Background: A systematic literature review shows there is a need to study how professionals work with multiple-birth families in different kinds of nursing contexts. Objective: The aim is to describe public-health nurses' (n = 8) experiences of supporting multiple-birth families and to contribute to the understanding of working with such families. Methodology: The qualitative research study is guided by the phenomenological hermeneutic and van Manen's methods have been used. The phenomenon was described through the concept of lifeworld: time, body, relations, and space. The data include participants' interviews and written documents, as well as the researcher's notes. Results: The phenomena of supporting multiple-birth families, as described by public-health nurses, can be expressed by "Recognizing the strain", "Lightening the load of daily life" and "Targeting special needs". Conclusions: The social-and health-care professionals met challenges in supporting multiple-birth families, and disclosed their need for training and education. There is a need for more understanding of the unique relevant needs and life situations of such families. Wellbeing and caring involves giving guidance and providing the parents with the special knowledge they need. Further research could concentrate on how evidence-based research guides the work of professionals in multi-professional teams. 展开更多

In phenomenological research, the reduction is a complex reflective attentiveness required for phenomenological understanding. A literature review revealed that little research has been done on health care professionals working with multiple-birth families. Van Manen's method has been variously used in nursing science. The aim of this article is to describe the hermeneutic circle and the method of reduction, providing an empirical example of the experiences of public health nurses working with multiple-birth families. The data consisted of open interviews (n = 38) with three participant groups--parents of twins, nurses, and family care workers--written output from them and the researcher's notes. The phenomena of the lifeworld of multiple-birth families as described by nurses can be expressed as: "recognizing the strain", "targeting special needs", and "lightening the load of daily life". Reduction enables in-depth phenomenological hermeneutic research, helping to see the research stages both as parts and as a whole and the hermeneutic circle that accumulates understanding. Social and health care professionals need to listen more to parents' voices to better understand the needs and situation of multiple-birth families. More education and training is needed to empower parents of twins. This article can stimulate discussion on phenomenology, hermeneutic research and reduction. 展开更多

This article theorises the local world as a conceptual scaffold for future conservation and regeneration. It aims to catalyse a theoretical dialogue across the East and West to understand how ordinary places and lifeworlds are preserved, reproduced, and possibly reimagined. The local worlds discussed herein are conceptualised as the worlds of many, the worlds of relating, the worlds of structuring and the worlds of becoming. These four cardinal points present a source of open-endedness and futurity for contemporary architectural reinterpretation. The current article examines the characterisation of the Wen village conservation and regeneration project, led by the Amateur Architecture Studio in Zhejiang Province of China(2012–2016),as an architectural reimagination of local worlds, with a strong sensitivity to the ordinary places and lifeworlds of rural China and juxtapositions of new local worlds within old worlds.By piecing together the flows and fragments of the architectural process, this article shows how locally situated designs and dynamics have shaped the project in both its formation and afterlife, both ethically and contemporarily.Using close readings of popular and oral accounts from both architect’s and users’perspectives, this article extends the case study by broadening theoretical conversations about contemporary architecture’s capacity to reimagine local worlds. 展开更多

This essay considers borders as symbols of precarity and the possibility of re-framing them through boundary play. While borders were historically installed as military defenses they are now chiefly used to prevent and control migrants. My argument is against the either-or thinking that prevails in bordering and othering. Prominent social science perspectives are considered. By focusing on the semiotic phenomenological relations of homeland, homeworld, and lifeworld the possibilities of play at the boundaries of conscious experience are revealed. My disciplinary perspective is communicology, the human science of embodied discourse. 展开更多

The bases of the article are the results of an empirical study about traditional work places in industry. There were made group discussions and special qualitative interviews with workers and employees of a German factory. The article tries to interpret and to integrate these subjective concepts in the actual discussion of theoretical perspectives in sociology, social psychology, and adult education. The theoretical discussion refers to German,Austrian,French, and American social scientists. The result of this discourse is a theoretical construction of a hidden informal lifeworld, which is embedded in the concrete industrial working process. These informal lifeworlds influence the cooperation of the workers and the relationship between work and learning. 展开更多

Building information modeling and its impact on users in the lifeworld: a mediation perspective

Building information modeling (BIM) is expected to have a large impact on users in the lifeworlds in a construction supply chain. The impact ofBIM on users in their lifeworlds is explored using the concepts of Heidegger, Habermas, and Ihde from the perspective of technical mediation. This impact is explored by a case study. BIM mediates and shapes the relationship between users and their lifeworlds and can be characterized as either a hermeneutic or an alterity relationship. BIM conflicts with existing work practices in a ready-to-hand work environment. For users that cannot work with BIM, the work environment remains present-at-hand. The many heterogeneous BIM applications and systems used by the various parties involved result in interoperability problems that are a major barrier to enframing the supply chain by BIM. Although invitation and inhibition of certain actions by BIM may stimulate the rationalization of the lifeworlds, the lack of intrinsic motivation and mutual background knowledge inhibits an alignment of BIM and working practices. 展开更多

Approximations to the Genuine Dialectics of the Enlightenment: On Husserl’s Europe, “Social Justice Theory”, and the Ethics of Semiosis

In Krisis, and in many of the preparatory papers for his last published work,Edmund Husserl repeatedly declares his allegiance to the Enlightenment, but,at the same time, always expresses his misgivings about its concrete purport.Like Horkheimer and Adorno, but for somewhat different reasons,he thus succumbs to what Ferrone has termed the philosopher’s conception of the Enlightenment,as opposed to that of the historian of ideas. No doubt Husserl is explicit about not aiming to write a history of ideas, but in so doing he misses the essential thrust of the Enlightenment as being a part of what he himself describes as the European tradition. In accordance with his own notion of generativity, the Enlightenment must be seen as going well beyond the Greek beginnings by epitomizing,in the 18th century, the idea of human rights,as well as that of universal critique.Indeed,it is the discovery of the(rights of the)Other which justifies Husserl’s claim for Europe being the bearer of a universal meaning. These days, however,Enlightenment values,by means of a genuine dialectics, have been brought,in the guise of the so-called Social Justice Theory,to enter into contradiction with themselves, one of the victims of which is Husserl’s notion of Europe.Since the new struggle for Enlightenment, like the classical one,has to be fought out in the Public Sphere,we need to develop a novel Ethics of communication. 展开更多
