Background:The Science,PE,&Me!(SPEM)curriculum is a concept-based physical education curriculum that offers students coherent educational experiences for constructing health-related fitness knowledge through movement experiences. The purpose of this study was to evaluate students’motivational response to the SPEM curriculum from the situational interest perspective. Methods:The study used a cluster randomized controlled design in which 30 elementary schools in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the eastern United States were randomly assigned to an experimental or comparison condition.Although all students in the 3rd,4th,and 5th grades in the targeted schools were eligible to participate in the study,a random sample of students from the experimental(n=1749;15 schools)and comparison groups(n=1985;15 schools)provided data.Students’motivational response to the SPEM curriculum or comparison curriculum was measured using the previously validated Situational Interest Scale-Elementary.Data were analyzed using structural mean modeling. Results:The results demonstrated that the experimental group(as reference group)showed significantly higher enjoyment(z=-2.01),challenge(z=-6.54),exploration(z=-12.195),novelty(z=-8.80),and attention demand(z=-7.90)than the comparison group. Conclusion:The findings indicate that the SPEM curriculum created a more situationally interesting context for learning than the comparison physical education curriculum. 展开更多

This paper is intended to introduce some helpful learning strategies to language learners by brief analysis of Good Language Learner (GLL) strategies. As is shown, many different factors affect language learning and the important one of them is individual differences — different motivation, different aptitude and different learning strategies, etc.— which can lead to various achievements in language learning. Therefore, learners should try to employ the most appropriate learning strategies in order to get desired achievements. 展开更多

This study focuses on the two Taiwan Residents students who have had prior experiences studying in the U.S. The case studies examine how motivations, learning styles and strategies, cultural influences, identities, and education systems have influenced their English learning. An interpretative approach was selected because oral history case studies provide opportunities to explore the participants' views in relation to the research questions on this topic and allows them to emerge from the participants' discourse, thus facilitating an understanding of their experience. By exploring one's ideas of learning, one could tell the differences of individual learner and one's exclusive ideas of learning. The results also indicate the importance of cultural influences as factors amongst international and home learner groups. A cross cultural perspective is increasingly important. By studying other cultures, we are in a better position to reflect on and critically appreciate our own culture. Teachers cannot assume that all students use the same learning styles, but we can better support students by finding their ways of learning. Teachers could support their students to find their learning strategies that suit their own learning styles and to motivate them to adjust better into the learning environment. With relevant knowledge of their students' learning styles, teachers may consider whether and how to adjust their methods of teaching that motivate. 展开更多

This study focuses on thirty-five Low-level/achieving students on General Education English which meets for two hour.,; per week, eight weeks for two consecutive semesters (totaling thirty-two hours) in the University of Technology in Taiwan. Its chief aims four-fold: First, to promote the students' learning motivation; second, to increase the students' learning interests; third, to raise their English abilities by reading theme-based/oriented topics; and, fourth, instruct them by giving guidelines to make Power-Point presentations in class. A prior or pilot survey was conducted to provide empirical opportunities to collect and explore the participants' views, comments, and opinions in relation to the selected research questions on this topic. The results also indicate that students can speak different/various length of words, utilize appropriate phrase to express their ideas or goals, and to speak in various/different paces, etc. Teachers couldn't assess the students only by their test results due to the different learning styles adopted by individual students; however, through this survey, students can be better assisted through the identification of their individual styles or habits, their individual styles or habits of learning. As regards relevant knowledge about their students' learning styles, teachers may consider whether and how to adjust their methods of teaching in order to better motivate them to learn English more effectively and efficiently. 展开更多
