Taking into account the slip flow effects, Newtonian heating, and thermal radiation, two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows and heat transfer past a permeable stretching sheet are investigated numerically. We use one parameter group transformation to develop similarity transformation. By using the similarity transformation, we transform the governing boundary layer equations along with the boundary conditions into ordinary differential equations with relevant boundary conditions. The obtained ordinary differential equations are solved with the fourth-fifth order Runge-Kutta- Fehlberg method using MAPLE 13. The present paper is compared with a published one. Good agreement is obtained. Numerical results for dimensionless velocity, temperature distributions, skin friction factor, and heat transfer rates are discussed for various values of controlling parameters. 展开更多

Large-scale secondary motions are known to occur in turbulent flows over surfaces with spanwise roughness heterogeneity.Numerical studies often use adjacent high-and low-roughness longitudinal strips to investigate these secondary rolls in boundary layers without any thermal stratification. In the present study, the effect of unstable thermal stratification on secondary rolls in a very high-Reynolds-number turbulent flow with spanwise-heterogeneous roughness is investigated by means of large-eddy simulation. The strength of the unstable stratification is systematically changed from L/h=−20 to L/h=−1,where L and h are Monin-Obukhov length and boundary-layer height, respectively. This range covers the transition from neutral stratification to unstable stratification. The results show that the positive buoyancy associated with the unstable thermal stratification acts against the roughness-induced secondary rolls. In the case of unstable stratification, secondary rolls are completely canceled out by buoyancy and replaced by new stronger convection-induced rolls rotating in opposite directions. 展开更多

Vanadium redox flow batteries(VRFBs)hold significant promise for large-scale energy storage applications. However, the sluggish reaction kinetics on the electrode surface considerably limit their performance.Implementation of efficient surface modification on carbon electrodes through an economically viable production method is crucial for the practical application of VRFBs.Herein,a nano-carbon layer with morphology of fine nanoparticles(<90 nm)and rich oxygen functional groups was constructed on carbon felts by unbalanced magnetron sputtering coupled with thermal treatment. This modified carbon felt served as both anode and cathode in cell, enabling an improved wettability of electrolyte and high reversibility of the active mass, and promoted kinetics of redox reactions. The optimized carbon felt, achieved through one hour of deposition(1C-CF),demonstrated outstanding electrochemical performance in a single cell. The cell exhibited a high energy efficiency of 82.4%at a current density of 100 m A cm^(-2)and maintained 71.8%at a high current density of 250 mA cm^(-2).Furthermore,the energy efficiency remained at 77.2%during long-term cycling(450 cycles)at a current density of 150 mA cm^(-2),indicating good electrode stability. Our results shed light on the surface design of carbon felt electrodes for the broad application interest of VRFB energy storage systems. 展开更多

Similarity equations are obtained through the application of similar transformation techniques. Numerical techniques are used to solve the similarity equations for different values of the unsteadiness parameter, the mass suction parameter, the shrinking parameter and the Prandtl number on the velocity and temperature profiles as well as the skin friction coefficient and the Nusselt number. The Görtler vortex is a characteristic flow feature observed in the boundary layer on compression ramp in hypersonic flow.In the context of high-enthalpy plasma flows during aerospace re-entry processes, there is currently a lack of effective means to visualize the boundary layer. In this study, the Nitric Oxide Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence(NO-PLIF)technique was employed to visualize the boundary layer of a compression ramp in a 50-MW arc-heated plasma wind tunnel.Görtler-like vortex structures were observed in the boundary layer of the ramp. This is the first time that Görtler vortices have been clearly observed in a high-enthalpy plasma flow.By varying the flow conditions, the Görtler vortices persisted in the boundary layer of the ramp when the total enthalpy of the arc-heated wind tunnel exceeded 12.3 MJ/kg.Several image processing techniques were applied to extract the structure of high-speed Görtler streaks, and the position of the high-speed streaks was found to be non-fixed,whereas the average Görtler wavelength remained at approximately 30 mm at a 10°ramp and showed limited variation with the total enthalpy.Additionally,a sheet-forming optics system with an adjustable angle and height was designed to enable visualization of the Görtler vortices in the boundary layer of the ramp at different angles and heights. The vortices on the low-angle ramp exhibited better stability and shorter wavelengths.Visualization results at different heights confirmed that the Görtler vortex wavelength was approximately twice the boundary layer thickness. This study demonstrates the feasibility and potential of the PLIF technique for the visualization of the boundary layer in plasma flows, especially with regard to Görtler vortices. 展开更多

The specific heat is not a constant but a function of temperature. Under this condition, the transition position of hypersonic sharp wedge boundary layer is predicted by using the improved eN method considering variable specific heat. The transition positions with different Mach numbers of oncoming flow, half wedge angles, and wall conditions are computed condition, the nearer to the Mach number The results show that for the same oncoming flow condition and wall transition positions of hypersonic sharp wedge boundary layer move much leading edge than those of the flat plate. The greater the oncoming flow the closer the transition position to the leading edge. 展开更多

In this paper, the boundary layer stagnation-point slip flow and heat transfer towards a shrinking/stretching cylinder over a permeable surface is considered. The governing equations are first transformed into a system of non-dimensional equations via the non-dimensional variables, and then into self-similar ordinary differential equations before they are solved numerically using the shooting method. Numerical results are obtained for the skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number as well as the velocity and temperature profiles for some values of the governing parameters, namely the velocity slip parameter (α), the thermal slip parameter (β), the curvature parameter (γ) and the velocity ratio parameter (c/a). The physical quantities of interest are the skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number measured by f’’(0) and –θ’(0), respectively. The numerical results show that the velocity slip parameter α increases the heat transfer rate at the surface, while the thermal slip parameter β decreases it. On the other hand, increasing the velocity slip parameter α causes the decrease in the flow velocity. Further, it is found that the solutions for a shrinking cylinder (c/ac/a>0) case. Finally, it is also found that the values of f’’(0) and –θ’(0) increase as the curvature parameter γ increases. 展开更多

The parabolized stability equations (PSEs) for high speed flows, especially supersonic and hypersonic flows, are derived and used to analyze the nonparallel boundary layer stability. The proposed numerical techniques for solving PSE include the following contents: introducing the efficiently normal transformation of the boundary layer, improving the computational accuracy by using a high-order differential scheme near the wall, employing the predictor-corrector and iterative approach to satisfy the important normalization condition, and implementing the stable spatial marching. Since the second mode dominates the growth of the disturbance in high Mach number flows, it is used in the computation. The evolution and characteristics of the boundary layer stability in the high speed flow are demonstrated in the examples. The effects of the nonparallelizm, the compressibility and the cooling wall on the stability are analyzed. And computational results are in good agreement with the relevant data. 展开更多

This paper presents a numerical study of the flow topologies of three-dimensional (3D) flows in a high pressure compressor stator blade row without and with boundary layer aspiration on the hub wall. The stator blade is representative of the first stage operating under transonic inlet conditions and the blade design encourages development of highly complex 3D flows. The blade has a small tip clearance. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies show progressive increase of hub corner stall with the increase in incidence. Aspiration is implemented on the hub wall via a slot in the comer between the hub wall and the suction surface. The CFD studies show aspiration to be sensitive to the suction flow rate; lower rate leads to very complex flow struc- tures and increased level of losses whereas higher rate renders aspiration effective for control of hub comer separation. The flow topologies are studied by trace of skin friction lines on the walls. The nature of flow can be explained by the topological rules of closed separation. Furthermore, a deeper analysis is done for a particular case with advanced criterion to test the non-degeneracy of critical points in the flow field. 展开更多

The reason for the asymmetry phenomenon of shock/boundary layer interactions(SBLI)in a completely symmetric nozzle with symmetric flow conditions is still an open question.A model for the asymmetry of nozzle flows was proposed based on the properties of fluid entrainment in the mixing layer and momentum conservation. The asymmetry model is deduced based on the nozzle flow with restricted shock separation, and is still applicable for free shock separation.Flow deflection angle at nozzle exit is deduced from this model.Steady numerical simulations are conducted to model the asymmetry of the SBLIs in a planar convergent-divergent nozzle tested by previous researchers. The obtained values of deflection angle based on the numerical results of forced symmetric nozzle flows can judge the asymmetry of flows in a nozzle at some operations. It shows that the entrainment of shear layer on the separation induced by SBLTs is one of the reasons for the asymmetry in the confined SBLIs. 展开更多

Subsurface water flow velocity influences the hydrodynamic characteristics of soil seepage and the interaction between subsurface water flow and surface runoff during soil erosion and sediment transport.A visualized method and equipment was adopted in this study to observe the subsurface water flow.Quartz sand was used as the test material of subsurface water flow and fluorescent dye was used as the indicator for tracing subsurface water flow.Water was supplied at the same flow discharge to the three parts at the bottom of the test flume, and the subsurface water flow were determined with four slope gradients(4°,8°,10°,and 12°).The results showed that the seepage velocity gradually increased with increasing slope gradient. The pore water velocity at different depths of sand layer profile increased with increasing slope gradient, whereas the thickness of the flow front gradually decreased. For the same slope gradient, the pore water velocity in the lower layer was the largest, whereas the thickness of the flow front was the smallest.Comparative analysis of the relationship between seepage velocity and pore water velocity at different depths of sand layer profile showed that the maximum relative difference between the measured pore water velocity and the computational pore water velocity at different depths of sand profile in the experiment was 4.38%.Thus,the test method for measuring the subsurface water flow velocity of sand layer profile adopted in this study was effective and feasible. The development of this experiment and the exploration of research methods would lay a good test foundation for future studies on the variation law of subsurface water flow velocity and the determination of flow velocity in purple soils, thus contributing to the improvement of the hydrodynamic mechanism of purple soils. 展开更多

The effect of magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)plasma actuators on the control of hypersonic shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions is investigated here using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes calculations with low magnetic Reynolds number approximation.A Mach 5 oblique shock/turbulent boundary layer interaction was adopted as the basic configuration in this numerical study in order to assess the effects of flow control using different combinations of magnetic field and plasma. Results show that just the thermal effect of plasma under experimental actuator parameters has no significant impact on the flow field and can therefore be neglected. On the basis of the relative position of control area and separation point,MHD control can be divided into four types and so effects and mechanisms might be different.Amongst these,D-type control leads to the largest reduction in separation length using magnetically-accelerated plasma inside an isobaric dead-air region.A novel parameter for predicting the shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction control based on Lorentz force acceleration is then proposed and the controllability of MHD plasma actuators under different MHD interaction parameters is studied. The results of this study will be insightful for the further design of MHD control in hypersonic vehicle inlets. 展开更多

Boundary layer suction is an e ective method used to delay separations in axial compressors. Most studies on bound?ary layer suction have focused on improving the performance of compressors, whereas few studies investigated the influence on details of the flow fields, especially vortexes in compressors. CFD method is validated with experi?mental data firstly. Three single?slot and one double?slot endwall boundary layer suction schemes are designed and investigated. In addition to the investigation of aerodynamic performance of the cascades with and without suction, variations in corner open separation, passage vortex, and concentration shedding vortex, which are rarely seen for the flow controlled blades in published literatures, are analyzed. Then, flow models, which are the ultimate aim,of both baseline and aspirated cascades are established. Results show that single?slot endwall suction scheme adjacent to the suction surface can e ectively remove the corner open separation. With suction mass flow rate of 0.85%,the overall loss coe cient and endwall loss coe cient of the cascade are reduced by 25.2% and 48.6%,respectively. Besides, this scheme increases the static pressure rise coe cient of the cascade by 3.2% and the flow turning angle of up to 3.3° at 90% span. The concentration shedding vortex decreases, whereas the passage vortex increases. For single?slot suction schemes near the middle pitchwise of the passage, the concentration shedding vortex increases and the passage vortex is divided into two smaller passage vortexes, which converge into a single?passage vortex near the trailing edge section of the cascade. For the double?slot suction scheme, triple?passage vortexes are presented in the blade passage. Some new vortex structures are discovered, and the novel flow models of aspirated compressor cascade are proposed, which are important to improve the design of multi?stage aspirated compressors. 展开更多

A numerical analysis of the log-law behavior for the turbulent boundary layer of a wall-bounded flow is performed over a flat plate immersed in three nanofluids(Zn O-water,SiO_(2)-water,TiO_(2)-water).Numerical simulations using CFD code are employed to investigate the boundary layer and the hydrodynamic flow.To validate the current numerical model, measurement points from published works were used, and the compared results were in good compliance.Simulations were carried out for the velocity series of 0.04,0.4 and 4 m/s and nanoparticle concentrations0.1% and 5%.The influence of nanoparticles’ concentration on velocity, temperature profiles, wall shear stress, and turbulent intensity was investigated. The obtained results showed that the viscous sub-layer,the buffer layer, and the loglaw layer along the potential-flow layer could be analyzed based on their curving quality in the regions which have just a single wall distance. It was seen that the viscous sub-layer is the biggest area in comparison with other areas.Alternatively, the section where the temperature changes considerably correspond to the thermal boundary layer’s thickness goes a downward trend when the velocity decreases. The thermal boundary layer gets deep away from the leading edge. However,a rise in the volume fraction of nanoparticles indicated a minor impact on the shear stress developed in the wall.In all cases, the thickness of the boundary layer undergoes a downward trend as the velocity increases, whereas increasing the nanoparticle concentrations would enhance the thickness.More precisely, the log layer is closed with log law,and it is minimal between Y^(+)=50 and Y^(+)=95.The temperature for nanoparticle concentration φ=5%is higher than that for φ=0.1%,in boundary layers, for all studied nanofluids. However,it is established that the behavior is inverted from the value of Y^(+)=1 and the temperature for φ =0.1% is more important than the case of φ =5%.For turbulence intensity peak, this peak exists at Y^(+)=100 for v=4 m/s,Y^(+)=10 for v=0.4 m/s and Y^(+)=8 for v=0.04 m/s. 展开更多
