Based on Hamilton's principle, a new kind of fully coupled nonlinear dynamic model for a rotating rigid-flexible smart structure with a tip mass is proposed. The geometrically nonlinear effects of the axial, transverse displacement and rotation angle are considered by means of the first-order approximation coupling (FOAC) model theory, in which large deformations and the centrifugal stiffening effects are considered. Three kinds of systems are established respectively, which are a structure without piezoelectric layer, with piezoelectric layer in open circuit and closed circuit. Several simulations based on simplified models are presented to show the differences in characteristics between structures with and without the tip mass, between smart beams in closed and open circuit, and between the centrifugal effects in high speed rotating state or not. The last simulation calculates the dynamic response of the structure subjected to external electrical loading. 展开更多

In the present paper, the isogeometric analysis(IGA) of free-form planar curved beams is formulated based on the nonlinear Timoshenko beam theory to investigate the large deformation of beams with variable curvature. Based on the isoparametric concept, the shape functions of the field variables(displacement and rotation) in a finite element analysis are considered to be the same as the non-uniform rational basis spline(NURBS) basis functions defining the geometry. The validity of the presented formulation is tested in five case studies covering a wide range of engineering curved structures including from straight and constant curvature to variable curvature beams. The nonlinear deformation results obtained by the presented method are compared to well-established benchmark examples and also compared to the results of linear and nonlinear finite element analyses. As the nonlinear load-deflection behavior of Timoshenko beams is the main topic of this article, the results strongly show the applicability of the IGA method to the large deformation analysis of free-form curved beams. Finally, it is interesting to notice that, until very recently, the large deformations analysis of free-form Timoshenko curved beams has not been considered in IGA by researchers. 展开更多

There exist three types of nonlinear problems in large deformation processes of deep softrock engineering, i.e., nonlin- earity caused by material, geometrical and contact boundary. In this paper, the numerical method to tackle the nonlinear eontact and large deformation problem in A Software on Large Deformation Analysis for Soft Rock Engineering at Great Depth was presented. In the software, based on Lagrange multiplier method and Coulomb friction law, kinematic constraints on contact boundaries were introduced in functional function, and the finite element equations was established for two incremental large deformation analyses models, polar decomposition model and additive decomposition model. For every incremental loading step, by searching for the contact points in the potential contact interfaces (the excavation boundaries), the Lagrange multipliers, i.e., contact forces are cal- culated iteratively by Gauss-Seidel method, and justified through satisfy the inequalities of static constraint on contact boundaries. With the software, large deformation and frictional contact of a transport roadway were analyzed numerically by the two models. The numerical examples demonstrated the efficiency of the method used in the software. 展开更多

High stress concentrations around underground excavations can result in significant damage to deep hard-rock mines. These conditions can be the result of stopping activities, blasting, seismicity,or other mining activities.Large anisotropic deformation and excavation closure, especially under high-stress conditions, are expected if the excavation is located in a foliated or thin-bedded rock mass.In this research, the behaviour of excavations under deep and high-stress conditions was investigated and categorised. The main purpose was to enhance the existing knowledge of managing large anisotropic deformations and to help prepare suitable measures for handling such contingencies.Numerical simulations using the distinct element method(DEM)and model calibration were performed to reproduce the anisotropic deformation of an ore drive based on the collected field data. Then, the roles of key factors(i.e.stress ratio, slenderness ratio, foliation orientation, and foliation considering excavation orientation)on the large deformation and damage depth of the excavations were investigated. This study found that increasing both the stress ratio and slenderness ratio induced linear increases in wall closure and damage depth, whereas increasing the foliation angle first increases the deformation and damage depth and then reduces them both before and after 45.The wall closure and damage thickness decreased with increasing orientation intercept. The deformation and damage levels were classified based on these factors. 展开更多

Honeycomb structures of shape memory alloy(SMA)have become one of the most promising materials for flexible skins of morphing aircraft due to their excellent mechanical properties. However, due to the nonlinear material and geometric large deformation, the SMA honeycomb exhibits significant and complex nonlinearity in the skin and there is a lack of relevant previous research. In this paper, the nonlinear properties of the SMA honeycomb structure with arbitrary geometry are investigated for the first time for large deformation flexible skin applications by theoretical and experimental analysis.Firstly,a novel theoretical model of SMA honeycomb structure considering both material and geometric nonlinearity is proposed, and the corresponding calculation method of nonlinear governing equations is given based upon the shooting method and Runge–Kutta method. Then, the tensile behaviors of four kinds of SMA honeycomb structures,i.e.,U-type,V-type,cosine-type,and trapezoid-type,are analyzed and predicted by the proposed theoretical model and compared with the finite element analysis(FEA)results. Moreover, the tensile experiments were carried out by stretching U-type and V-type honeycomb structures to a global strain of 60%and 40%,respectively,to perform large deformation analysis and verify the theoretical model. Finally, experimental verification and finite element validation show that the curves of the theoretical model results, experimental results, and simulation results are in good agreement, illustrating the generalizability and accuracy of the proposed theoretical model. The theoretical model and experimental investigations in this paper are considered to provide an effective foundation for analyzing and predicting the mechanical behavior of SMA honeycomb flexible skins with large extensional deformations. 展开更多

When a cracked hydrogel sample immersed in water is stretched,a swelling zone near the crack tip emerges.Within the swelling zone, water diffusion occurs and swells the hydrogel.Outside the swelling zone, water diffusion is negligible, and the material behaves like an incompressible elastomer.Since water diffusion is a time-dependent process, the size of the swelling zone changes with time.As time evolves, the size of the swelling zone grows until to the size of the hydrogel sample. There exists a competition between the size of the swelling zone and the size of the hydrogel sample, which results in complex rate-dependent fracture behavior of hydrogel. In this article, the competition effect is studied theoretically and numerically. We find that the hydrogel undergoes three stages gradually:small-scale swelling,large-scale swelling, and equilibrium as the size of the swelling zone approaches the size of the hydrogel sample. In the stage of small-scale swelling, the first invariant of stretch at the notch tip I1notch increases with the decrease of the stretch rate.In the stage of large-scale swelling,I1notch increases first and then decreases with the decrease of stretch rate.In the stage of equilibrium, the effect of water diffusion is negligible, and I1notch is independent of stretch rate. This work reveals the connection between the stretch rate, the size of the swelling zone, and the crack tip quantity I1notch,which is used to establish the fracture criterion and predict rate-dependent fracture of hydrogel.Particularly, the previous works on different trends of rate-dependent behavior of hydrogel can be unified in this work, when both small-scale swelling and large-scale swelling are considered. 展开更多

Deep excavations in silt strata can lead to large deformation problems, posing risks to both the excavation and adjacent structures. This study combines field monitoring with numerical simulation to investigate the underlying mechanisms and key aspects associated with large deformation problems induced by deep excavation in silt strata in Shenzhen,China. The monitoring results reveal that, due to the weak property and creep effect of the silt strata, the maximum wall deflection in the first excavated section(Section 1)exceeds its controlled value at more than 93%of measurement points, reaching a peak value of 137.46 mm.Notably, the deformation exhibits prolonged development characteristics, with the diaphragm wall deflections contributing to 39%of the overall deformation magnitude during the construction of the base slab.Subsequently, numerical simulations are carried out to analyze and assess the primary factors influencing excavation-induced deformations, following the observation of large deformations. The simulations indicate that the low strength of the silt soil is a pivotal factor that results in significant deformations.Furthermore, the flexural stiffness of the diaphragm walls exerts a notable influence on the development of deformations. To address these concerns,an optimization study of potential treatment measures was performed during the subsequent excavation of Section 2.The combined treatment approach, which comprises the reinforcement of the silt layer within the excavation and the increase in the thickness of the diaphragm walls, has been demonstrated to offer an economically superior solution for the handling of thick silt strata. This approach has the effect of reducing the lateral wall displacement by 83.1%and the ground settlement by 70.8%,thereby ensuring the safe construction of the deep excavation. 展开更多

The accuracy of the full-scale aircraft static tests is greatly influenced by the aircraft attitude. This paper proposes an aircraft attitude optimization method based on the characteristics of the test. The aim is to address three typical problems of ttitude control in the full-scale aircraft static tests:(1)The coupling of rigid-body displacement and elastic deformation after large deformation,(2)the difficulty of characterizing the aircraft attitude by measurable structure,and(3)the insufficient adaptability of the center of gravity reference to complex loading conditions. The methodology involves the establishment of two observation coordinate systems,a ground coordinate system and an airframe coordinate system, and two deformation states, before and after airframe deformation.A subsequent analysis of the parameter changes of these two states under different coordinate systems is then undertaken, with the objective being to identify the key parameters affecting the attitude control accuracy of large deformation aircraft.Three optimization objective functions are established according to the test loading characteristics and the purpose of the test:(1)To minimize the full-scale aircraft loading angle error,(2)to minimize the full-scale aircraft loading additional load,and(3)to minimize the full-scale aircraft loading wing root additional bending moment. The optimization calculation results are obtained by using the particle swarm optimization algorithm, and the typical full-scale aircraft static test load condition of large passenger aircraft is taken as an example. The analysis of the results demonstrates that by customizing the measurable structure of the aircraft as the observation point for the aircraft attitude, and by obtaining the translational and rotational control parameters of the observation point during the test based on the optimization objective function, the results are reasonable, and the project can be implemented and used to control the aircraft's attitude more accurately in complex force test conditions. 展开更多

Magneto-active soft materials, composed of hard-magnetic particles embedded in polymeric matrices, have found widespread applications in soft robotics, active metamaterials, and shape-morphing structures across various length scales due to their ability to undergo reversible, untethered, and rapid deformation in response to magnetic actuation. At small scales, surface effects play a crucial role in the mechanical behavior of these soft materials. In this paper,we theoretically investigate the influence of surface effects on the buckling instability and large deformation of magneto-active soft beams under a uniform magnetic field. The theoretical model is derived according to the principle of minimum potential energy and numerically solved with the finite difference method.By employing the developed theoretical model, parametric studies are performed to explore how surface effects influence the buckling instability and large deformation of magneto-active soft cantilever beams with varying geometric parameters under different uniform magnetic fields. Our results reveal that the influence of surface effects on the mechanical behavior of magneto-active soft beams depends not only on the geometric parameters but also on the magnetic field strength.Specifically, when the magnetic field strength is relatively small, surface effects reduce the deformation of magneto-active soft beams, particularly for beams with smaller thicknesses and larger length-to-thickness ratios. However, when the magnetic field strength is sufficiently large, and the beam's deformation becomes saturated, surface effects have little influence on the deformation. This work uncovers the role of surface effects in the mechanical behavior of magnetoactive soft materials, which could provide guidelines for the design and optimization of small-scale magnetic-active soft material-based applications. 展开更多

Current hyperelastic constitutive models of hydrogels face difficulties in capturing the stress-strain behaviors of hydrogels under extremely large deformation because the effect of non-affine deformation of the polymer network inside is ambiguous. In this work,we construct periodic random network(PRN)models for the effective polymer network in hydrogels and investigate the non-affine deformation of polymer chains intrinsically originates from the structural randomness from bottom up.The non-affine deformation in PRN models is manifested as the actual stretch of polymer chains randomly deviated from the chain stretch predicted by affine assumption, and quantified by a non-affine ratio of each polymer chain. It is found that the non-affine ratios of polymer chains are closely related to bulk deformation state, chain orientation, and initial chain elongation.By fitting the non-affine ratio of polymer chains in all PRN models,we propose a non-affine constitutive model for the hydrogel polymer network based on micro-sphere model. The stress-strain curves of the proposed constitutive models under uniaxial tension condition agree with the simulation results of different PRN models of hydrogels very well. 展开更多

Rock mass large deformation in underground powerhouse caverns has been a severe hazard in hydropower engineering in Southwest China.During the development of rock mass large deformation,a sequence of fractures was generated that can be monitored using microseismic(MS)monitoring techniques. Two MS monitoring systems were established in two typical underground powerhouse caverns featuring distinct geostress levels. The MS b-values associated with rock mass large deformation and their temporal variation are analysed. The results showed that the MS bvalue in course of rock mass deformation was less than 1.0 in the underground powerhouse caverns at a high stress level while larger than 1.5 at a low stress level.Prior to the rock mass deformation, the MS b-values derived from both the high-stress and low-stress underground powerhouse caverns show an incremental decrease over 10%within 10 d.The results contribute to understanding the fracturing characteristics of MS sources associated with rock mass large deformation and provide a reference for early warning of rock mass large deformation in underground powerhouse caverns. 展开更多

Isolation bearings and dampers are often installed between piers and superstructures to reduce the seismic responses of bridges under large earthquakes. This paper presents a novel steel damper for bridges. The damper employs steel plates as energy dissipation components, and adopts a vertical free mechanism to achieve a large deformation capacity. Quasi-static tests using displacement-controlled cyclic loading and numerical analyses using a finite element program called ABAQUS are conducted to investigate the behavior of the damper, and a design methodology is proposed based on the tests and numerical analyses. Major conclusions obtained from this study are as follows: (1) the new dampers have stable hysteresis behavior under large displacements; (2) finite element analyses are able to simulate the behavior of the damper with satisfactory accuracy; and (3) simplified design methodology of the damper is effective. 展开更多

Based on mesh regeneration and stress interpolation from an old mesh to a new one, a large deformation finite element model is developed for the study of the behaviour of circular plate anchors subjected to uplift loading. For the deterruination of the distributions of stress components across a clay foundation, the Recovery by Equilibrium in Patches is extended to plastic analyses. ABAQUS, a commercial finite element package, is customized and linked into our program so as to keep automatic and efficient running of large deformation calculation. The quality of stress interpolation is testified by evaluations of Tresca stress and nodal reaction forces. The complete pulling-up processes of plate anchors buried in homogeneous clay arc simulated, and typical pulling force-displacement responses of a deep anchor and a shallow anchor are compared. Different from the results of previous studies, large deformation analysis is of the capability of estimating the breakaway between the anchor bottom and soils. For deep anchors, the variation of mobilized uplift resistance with anchor settlement is composed of three stages, and the initial buried depths of anchors affect the separation embedment slightly. The uplift bearing capacity of deep anchors is usually higher than that of shallow anchors. 展开更多

In this paper, nonlinear modeling for flexible multibody system with large deformation is investigated. Absolute nodal coordinates are employed to describe the displacement, and variational motion equations of a flexible body are derived on the basis of the geometric nonlinear theory, in which both the shear strain and the transverse normal strain are taken into account. By separating the inner and the boundary nodal coordinates, the motion equations of a flexible multibody system are assembled. The advantage of such formulation is that the constraint equations and the forward recursive equations become linear because the absolute nodal coordinates are used. A spatial double pendulum connected to the ground with a spherical joint is simulated to investigate the dynamic performance of flexible beams with large deformation. Finally, the resultant constant total energy validates the present formulation. 展开更多

Two-dimensional large deformation analysis of hyperelastic and elasto-plastic solids based on the Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin method (MLPG) is presented. A material configuration based the nonlinear MLPG formulation is introduced for the large deformation analysis of both path-dependent and path-independent materials. The supports of the MLS approximation functions cover the same sets of nodes during material deformation, thus the shape function needs to be computed only in the initial stage. The multiplicative hyperelasto-plastic constitutive model is adopted to avoid objective time integration for stress update in large rota- tion. With this constitutive model, the computational formulations for path-dependent and path-independent materials become identical. Computational efficiency of the nonlinear MLPG method is discussed and optimized in several aspects to make the MLPG an O(N) algorithm. The numerical examples indicate that the MLPG method can solve large deformation problems accurately. Moreover, the MLPG computations enjoy better convergence rate than the FEM under very large particle distortion. 展开更多

Flexible chiral honeycomb cores generally exhibit nonlinear elastic properties due to large geometric deformation. The effective elastic moduli and Poisson's ratio typically vary with an increase in deformation. Here, the size and shape optimization of the chiral hexagonal honeycombs was performed to keep the Young's moduli and Poisson's ratio unchanged under large deformations. The size of the honeycomb unit cell and the position coordinates of the key points were defined simultaneously as design variables. The equivalent Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of chiral honeycombs were calculated through geometric nonlinear analysis. The objective was to minimize the allowable tolerance between the prescribed and actual properties within the range of the target strain.A genetic algorithm was then adopted. The optimal results demonstrate that the chiral honeycombs can maintain effective elastic properties that do not vary under large deformation. These results are meaningful to morphing aircraft designs. 展开更多

Roadways excavated in soft rocks at great depth are difficult to be maintained due to large deformation of surrounding rocks, which greatly influences the safety and efficiency of deep resources exploitation. During the excavation process of a deep soft rock tunnel, the rock wall may be compacted due to large deformation. In this paper, the technique to address this problem by a two-dimensional (2D) finite element software, large deformation engineering analyses software (LDEAS 1.0), is provided. By using the Lagrange multiplier method, the kinematic constraint of non-penetrating condition and static constraint of Coulomb friction are introduced to the governing equations in the form of incremental displacement. The numerical example demonstrates the efficiency of this technology. Deformations of a transportation tunnel in inclined soft rock strata at the depth of 1 000 m in Qishan coal mine and a tunnel excavated to three different depths are analyzed by two models, i.e. the additive decomposition model and polar decomposition model. It can be found that the deformation of the transportation tunnel is asymmetrical due to the inclination of rock strata. For extremely soft rock, large deformation can converge only for the additive decomposition model. The deformation of surrounding rocks increases with the increase in the tunnel depth for both models. At the same depth, the deformation calculated by the additive decomposition model is smaller than that by the polar decomposition model. 展开更多

Large deformation analysis of slope failure is important for hazard and risk assessment of infrastructure.Recent studies have revealed that spatial variability of soil properties can significantly affect the probability of slope failure. However, due to limitations of traditional numerical tools, the influence of spatial variability of soil properties on the post-failure behavior of slopes has not been fully understood. Therefore,in this study,we aimed to investigate the effects of the cross-correlation between cohesion and the friction angle on the probability of slope failure and post-failure behavior(e.g.run-out distance, influence distance, and influence zone)using a random material point method(RMPM).The study showed that mesh size, strength reduction shape factor parameter, and residual strength all play critical roles in the calculated post-failure behavior of a slope.Based on stochastic Monte Carlo simulation, the effects of cross-correlation between cohesion and the friction angle on the probability of slope failure, and its run-out distance, influence distance, influence zone, and sliding volume were studied. The study also showed that material point method(MPM)has great advantages compared with the finite element method(FEM)in handling large deformations. 展开更多
