A Landscape Pattern Characterization Method Based on the Natural Complex: A Case Study of Songhua River Basin, China

The‘human-land relationship’has long been a central topic in geography,ecology,and social sciences.And dynamic monit-oring of the land use/cover change(LUCC)and landscape pattern studies of land use provide essential theoretical support for this field.On the basis of physicogeographical regionalization and landscape ecology theory,this study proposed a method for characterizing land-scape pattern by using the minmium natural complex as the basic evaluation unit,constructing a four-level classification framework that included natural area,landscape region,landscape subregion,and landscape group.The method was tested in the Songhua River Basin,China,and the results revealed that:(1)the landscape pattern characterization in the Songhua River Basin validated the feasibility of the proposed method,and the use of the minimum natural complex as the basic measurement unit for landscape pattern characterization be-nefited research in this field.(2)The multiscale landscape pattern characterization system,which was framed around natural area,land-scape region,landscape subregion,and landscape group,accurately reflected the spatial heterogeneity of the physical geographic envir-onment and the impact of human activities on the landscape pattern in the Songhua River Basin.The nature-dominated landscape region was mainly concentrated in high-altitude mountainous and hilly areas,the human-dominated landscape region was located on plains and platforms,and the human-land interaction landscape region exhibited a landscape pattern that is closely related to natural factors such as temperature,precipitation,and soil.(3)The proposed method not only revealed the complex interactions between the physical geograph-ic environment and human activities but also provided scientific support for land use planning and ecological environment management.Future research should incorporate higher-resolution data and socioeconomic factors to further explore the dynamic changes in land-scape patterns and their impacts on the regional ecological environment. 展开更多

Correlating fluency theory-based visual aesthetic liking of landscape with landscape types and features

People inherently assess landscapes by creating spontaneous aesthetic liking judgments based on the surrounding stimuli.To understand these judgements objectively,use may be made of the fluency theory of aesthetic pleasure(the psychological processes through which people experience beauty).This study aims to predict people’s visual aesthetic preferences based on fluency theory and to correlate these preferences with landscape types and features.An ordinary least squares(OLS)regression model was developed to predict visual aesthetic liking,using image statistics as explanatory variables.We determined types of landscape using Landscape Character Assessment(LCA)and applied viewshed analyses distinguishing between near,medium,and far zones.We identified landscape features by content analysis making use of machine learning-based image recognition supplied by Google Cloud Vision API.The results show that vegetation and geological forms were the most significant features for people’s visual aesthetic liking,followed by waterscapes and built structures/human settlements.The viewshed analyses indicated that‘medium-altitude,low-gradient artificial areas’were visible in photographs with high aesthetic visual liking in all zones(i.e.,at all distances).When the photographs showing this type of landscape are examined,the artificial areas in the photographs turn out to consist mostly of historical buildings or remains.This finding suggests that historical sites are not just important for their cultural value,but for their visual aesthetic value as well. 展开更多

The role of Landscape Character Assessment(LCA)at the level of territorial landscape governance spans both natural and social sciences.By analyzing the development history,research distribution,methods and applications of cutting-edge cases of LCA in China,the following conclusions are drawn:①the LCA research in China originated earlier than that in Europe,but has not yet been systematically applied to the implementation of urban and rural planning at all levels;②the fundamental theory of LCA in China has been well constructed,with three main research directions:technologyled,assessment-led,and assessment combined with other theories;③the development of LCA in rural areas is more mature than in urban areas,but the progress of research is uneven across regions;④the current research presents significant“bottom-up”academic characteristics,and there is an urgent need for government decision-making authorities and academia to jointly promote a“top-down”standardized governance mechanism to comprehensively promote the modernization of territorial landscape governance. 展开更多

Vegetation or land cover maps have been made directly or indirectly available for the entire territory of China. The certainties and uncertainties of land cover statistics were analyzed by comparing three data sources: China's Vegetation Map, IGPB DISCover, and University of Maryland Product. Great similarities in the statistics of 7 aggregated land cover types were found among the three data sources, particularly between the two global land cover maps. The per pixel agreement between any 2 of 3 maps was between 38.0%—51.4%; the per pixel agreement among all three maps was only 27.1%. Certainties were found in regions where vegetation types are typical and human land use practice is relatively homogenous; the uncertainties occurred to either vegetation transition zones or regions where land cover types and land use practice are relatively diversified. Systematic and multidisciplinary efforts are necessary to promote accurate mapping of nationwide land cover types in China. Intensive efforts should be made in regions where uncertainties of land cover information are found. 展开更多
