In this work, a series of centrifugal model tests is presented to examine the failure mechanisms of landslide dams. Based on the experimental results, failure process and mechanism of barrier dam due to overtopping are analyzed and further verified by simulating the experimental overtopping failure process. The results indicate that the barrier dam will develop during the entire process of overtopping in the width direction, whereas the breach will cease to develop at an early stage in the depth direction because of the large particles that accumulate on the downstream slope. Moreover, headcut erosion can be clearly observed in the first two stages of overtopping, and coarsening on the downstream slope occurs in the last stage of overtopping. Thus, the bottom part of the barrier dam can survive after dam breaching and full dam failure becomes relatively rare for a barrier dam. Furthermore, the remaining breach would be smaller than that of a homogeneous cohesive dam under the same conditions.展开更多

The pilot scale long-term tests for submerged membrane bioreactor were conducted to treat the effluents of anaerobic or aerobic treatment process for the high-strength Chinese traditional medicine wastewater. This article was focused on the feasibility of the wastewater treatment and reuse at shorter hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 5.0, 3.2 and 2.13 h. MLSS growth, membrane flux, vacuum values and chemical cleaning periods were also investigated. The experimental results of treating two-phase anaerobic treatment effluent demonstrated that the CODfilt was less than 100 mg/L when the influent COD was between 500-10000 mg/L at HRT of 5.0 h, which could satisfy the normal discharged standard in China. The experimental results to treat cross flow aerobic reactor effluent demonstrated that the average value of CODfilt was 17.28 mg/L when the average value of influent COD was 192.84 mg/L at HRT of 2.13 h during 106 d, which could completely meet the normal standard for water reuse. The maximum MLSS and MLVSS reached 24000 and 14500 mg/L at HRT of 3.2 h respectively. Membrane flux had maximal resume degrees of 94.7% at vacuum value of 0.02 MPa after cleaning. Chemical cleaning periods of membrane module were 150 d. A simulation model of operational parameters was also established based on the theory of back propagation neural network and linear regression of traditional mathematical model. The simulation model showed that the optimum operational parameters were suggested as follows: HRT was 5.0 h, SRT was 100 d, the range of COD loading rate was between 10.664-20.451 kg/(m3.d), the range of MLSS was between 7543-13694 mg/L.展开更多

In this paper, one goal of the simulation is to compute ultrasonic field radiated by arbitrary transducers into pieces under examination. The other simulates a testing experiment. The simulation approach is based on the model for the computation of the ultrasonic field in isotropic media radiated from actual NDT transducers. After the field is known, remaining to be modeled is the interaction between this field and the scatters (defect) and the echo structure. The model of beam-defect interaction is based on the Kirchhoff’s diffraction approximations theory applied to elastodynamics. We assumed that the incident wave fronts on the defect are plane in the case of a focused immersed transducer and material is isotropic and homogeneous. The simulating results demonstrate that the model in ultrasonic NDT of welds is practical in further research and useful in optimizing testi展开更多

To validate the numerical model, a series of physical model tests are conducted in the wave flume. The numerical results correspond well with the data sets from physical model test. The effect of weight of bottom frame, height of fish net and net shape on motion responses of fish cage and tension force on mooring lines is then analyzed. The results indicate that the vertical displacements of float collar and bottom frame decrease with the increase in the weight of bottom frame; the maximum tension force on mooring lines increases with the increasing weight of bottom frame. The inclination angles of float collar and bottom frame decrease with the increasing net height; the maximum tension force increases obviously with the increase of net height.展开更多

In research on this topic, model tests and full-scale tests on ships have thus far been the primary approaches. In recent years, the application of the finite element method(FEM) has also attracted interest. Some researchers have conducted numerical simulations on ship–ice interactions using the fluid–structure interaction(FSI) method. This study used this method to predict and analyze the resistance of an ice-going ship, and compared the results with those of model ship tests conducted in a towing tank with synthetic ice to discuss the feasibility of the FEM. A numerical simulation and experimental methods were used to predict the brash ice resistance of an ice-going container ship model in a condition with three concentrations of brash ice(60%, 80%, and 90%). A comparison of the results yielded satisfactory agreement between the numerical simulation and the experiments in terms of both observed phenomena and resistance values, indicating that the proposed numerical simulation has significant potential for use in related studies in the future.展开更多

Traditionally, TSO mainly focuses on fault detection and isolation, but they cannot provide an effective guide for the design for testability (DFT) to improve the PHM performance level. To solve the problem, a model of TSO for PHM systems is proposed. Firstly, through integrating the characteristics of fault severity and propa- gation time, and analyzing the test timing and sensitivity, a testability model based on failure evolution mechanism model (FEMM) for PHM systems is built up. This model describes the fault evolution- test dependency using the fault-symptom parameter matrix and symptom parameter-test matrix. Secondly, a novel method of in- herent testability analysis for PHM systems is developed based on the above information. Having completed the analysis, a TSO model, whose objective is to maximize fault trackability and mini- mize the test cost, is proposed through inherent testability analysis results, and an adaptive simulated annealing genetic algorithm (ASAGA) is introduced to solve the TSO problem. Finally, a case of a centrifugal pump system is used to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed models and methods. The results show that the proposed technology is important for PHM systems to select and optimize the test set in order to improve their performance level.展开更多

文摘In wheel–rail adhesion studies, most of the test rigs used are simplified designs such as a single wheel or wheelset, but the results may not be accurate.Alternatively, representing the complex system by using a full vehicle model provides accurate results but may incur complexity in design. To trade off accuracy over complexity,a bogie model can be the optimum selection.Furthermore, only a real-time model can replicate its physical counterpart in the time domain.Developing such a model requires broad expertise and appropriate software and hardware.A few published works are available which deal with real-time modeling. However, the influence of the control system has not been included in those works. To address these issues,a real-time scaled bogie test rig including the control system is essential. Therefore,a 1:4 scaled bogie roller rig is developed to study the adhesion between wheel and roller contact. To compare the performances obtained from the scaled bogie test rig and to expand the test applications,a numerical simulation model of that scaled bogie test rig is developed using Gensys multibody software. This model is the complete model of the test rig which delivers more precise results. To exactly represent the physical counterpart system in the time domain,a real-time scaled bogie test rig(RT-SBTR)is developed after four consecutive stages. Then,to simulate the RT-SBTR to solve the internal state equations and functions representing the physical counterpart system in rigs used are simplified designs such as a single wheel or wheelset, but the results may not be accurate.Alternatively, representing the complex system by using a full vehicle model provides accurate results but may incur complexity in design. Then,to simulate the RT-SBTR to solve the internal state equations and functions representing the physical counterpart system in equal or less than actual time, the real-time simulation environment is prepared in two stages. To such end,the computational time improved from 4 times slower than real time to 2 times faster than real time. Finally, the real-time scaled bogie model is also incorporated with the braking control system which slightly reduces the computational performances without affecting real-time capability.

文摘Damage and threats to hydraulic and submarine structures by underwater explosions(UNDEXs)have raised much attention. The centrifuge model test, compared to prototype test,is a more promising way to examine the problem while reducing cost and satisfying the similitude requirements of both Mach and Froude numbers simultaneously. This study used a systematic approach employing centrifuge model tests and numerical simulations to investigate the effects of UNDEXs on an air-backed steel plate.Nineteen methodical centrifuge tests of UNDEXs were conducted. The shock wave pressure, bubble oscillation pressure, acceleration and the strain of the air-backed steel plate were recorded and compared with numerical studies using the finite element analysis(FEA)commercial software ABAQUS.By implementing empirically derived and physically measured pressures into the numerical models, the effects of the shock wave and bubble oscillation on the steel plate were investigated.Generally, the numerical results were in agreement with the experimental results. These results showed that the peak pressure of an UNDEX has a significant effect on the peak acceleration of the steel plate and that the impulse of the UNDEX pressure governs the peak strain of the steel plate.

文摘The lack and pollution of water resource make wastewater reuse necessary. The simulation model showed that the optimum operational parameters were suggested as follows: HRT was 5.0 h, SRT was 100 d, the range of COD loading rate was between 10.664-20.451 kg/(m3.d), the range of MLSS was between 7543-13694 mg/L.

文摘The widespread utilisation of tunnel boring machines(TBMs)in underground construction engineering requires a detailed investigation of the cutter-rock interaction. In this paper,we conduct a series of largescale standing rotary cutting tests on granite in conjunction with high-fidelity numerical simulations based on a particle-type discrete element method(DEM)to explore the effects of key cutting parameters on the TBM cutter performance and the distribution of cutter-rock contact stresses. The assessment results of cutter performance obtained from the cutting tests and numerical simulations reveal similar dependencies on the key cutting parameters.More specifically, the normal and rolling forces exhibit a positive correlation with penetration but are slightly influenced by the cutting radius. In contrast, the side force decreases as the cutting radius increases.Additionally, the side force shows a positive relationship with the penetration for smaller cutting radii but tends to become negative as the cutting radius increases. The cutter's relative effectiveness in rock breaking is significantly impacted by the penetration but shows little dependency on the cutting radius.Consequently,an optimal penetration is identified, leading to a low boreability index and specific energy.A combined Hertz-Weibull function is developed to fit the cutter-rock contact stress distribution obtained in DEM simulations, whereby an improved CSM(Colorado School of Mines)model is proposed by replacing the original monotonic cutting force distribution with this combined Hertz-Weibull model. The proposed model outperforms the original CSM model as demonstrated by a comparison of the estimated cutting forces with those from the tests/simulations.The findings from this work that advance our understanding of TBM cutter performance have important implications for improving the efficiency and reliability of TBM tunnelling in granite.

文摘The stability of slopes and tunnels is controlled by rock discontinuities, and the rock discontinuities roughness and the sliding direction play a signifcant role in shear failure.However,three-dimensional roughness evaluation considering shear directions is scare, and the internal shear fracturing processes, micromechanical mechanisms and failure precursor of rock discontinuities are not well understood. Therefore, this study proposes a novel roughness evaluation index to quantitatively analyze the anisotropic characteristics of rock discontinuities. In conjunction with shear tests,a novel 3D-GBM modelling method considering the micromineral constituent and particle size distribution characteristics of granite as well as the geometric shape of discontinuities was realized. The strength, macro and micro-fracture characteristics, visual anisotropic shear evolution process and microfailure mechanism of granite discontinuities at diferent roughness and shear direction were investigated. Finally, the spatial and temporal evolutions of AE parameter b-value and magnitude M were further analyzed to reveal the shear fracture precursor of granite discontinuities.

文摘A computer simulation technique for ultrasonic propagation is utilized for the simulation of ultrasonic nondestructive testing (NDT). The simulating results demonstrate that the model in ultrasonic NDT of welds is practical in further research and useful in optimizing testi

文摘Optimum utilization of the loading capability of engineering materials is an important and active contribution to protect nature's limited resources, and it is the key for economic design methods. In order to make use of the materials' resources, those must be known very well;but conventional test methods will offer only limited informational value. The range of questions raised is as wide as the application of engineering materials, and partially they are very specific. The development of huge computer powers enables numeric modelling to simulate structural behaviour in rather complex loading environments-so the real material behaviour is known under the given loading conditions. Here the art of material testing design starts. To study the material behaviour under very distinct and specific loading conditions makes it necessary to simulate different temperature ranges, loading speeds, environments etc.and mostly there doesn't exist any commonly agreed test standard. In this contribution two popular,non-standard test procedures and test systems will be discussed on the base of their application background, special design features as well as test results and typically gained information:The demand for highspeed tests up to 1000 s^(-1) of strain rate is very specific and originates primarily in the automotive industry and the answers enable CAE analysis of crashworthiness of vehicle structures under crash conditions. The information on the material behaviour under multiaxial loading conditions is a more general one.Multiaxial stress states can be reduced to an equivalent stress, which allows the evaluation of the material's constraint and criticality of stress state. Both discussed examples shall show that the open dialogue between the user and the producer of testing machines allows custom-tailored test solutions.

文摘This paper aims at investigation of the dynamic properties of gravity cage exposed to waves by use of a numerical model. The numerical model is developed, based on lumped mass method to set up the equations of motion of the whole cage; meanwhile the solutions of equations are solved by the Runge-Kutta-Vemer fifth-order and sixth-order method. Physical model tests have been carried out to examine the validity of the numerical model. The results by the numerical simulation agree well with the experimental data.

文摘A numerical model of flatfish cage is built based on the lumped mass method and the principle of rigid body kinematics. The inclination angles of float collar and bottom frame decrease with the increasing net height; the maximum tension force increases obviously with the increase of net height.

文摘In this paper,a numerical investigation of a float-over installation for an offshore platform is presented to verify the feasibility of the actual installation. The hydrodynamic performance of a T-barge is investigated in the frequency domain, and the coupled motions are analyzed in the time domain. We then compare with those of the model test and determine that the response amplitude operator and the time series agree quite well. The barge exhibits favorable hydrodynamic behavior in the considered sea state, and the equipment loads are allowable.Themooring systemand sway fender forces are within the permissible range.Based on these results,we can verify that the actual installation of the offshore platform is feasible. We accurately simulated many important factors and effectively reduced the risk associated with the offshore installation, which is of great importance. As such,we demonstrate that the numerical simulation of the float-over installation for offshore platforms has practical engineering significance.

文摘Ice resistance prediction is a critical issue in the preliminary design of ships navigating brash ice conditions, which is closely related to the safety of a ship to navigate encounter brash ice, and has significant effects on the kinds of propellers and motor power needed. A comparison of the results yielded satisfactory agreement between the numerical simulation and the experiments in terms of both observed phenomena and resistance values, indicating that the proposed numerical simulation has significant potential for use in related studies in the future.

文摘The test selection and optimization (TSO) can improve the abilities of fault diagnosis, prognosis and health-state evalua- tion for prognostics and health management (PHM) systems. The results show that the proposed technology is important for PHM systems to select and optimize the test set in order to improve their performance level.
