Schlieren imaging is a highly sensitive and flexible technique widely used for flow visualization in high-speed fluid flow investigations. However, there is a lack of robust methods for extracting quantitative velocity from Schlieren images. In this study,a wavelet-based optical flow(WOF)algorithm incorporating a viscous regularization term is employed to compute velocity fields from Schlieren images under subsonic conditions. The method is applied to both a steady turbulent jet and an unsteady sweeping jet(SWJ).The estimated velocity and vorticity fields are compared with results obtained from an optimized optical flow(OF)method. The comparison demonstrates that the WOF method resolves more intricate flow details and exhibits greater resistance to noise. In experiments involving three different scenarios for both the turbulent jet and the SWJ,the measured velocities at lower speeds—where the flow can be considered incompressible—show good agreement with the theoretical values. However, under compressible conditions, the effects of compressibility and the internal flow oscillation mechanisms of the sweeping jet actuator(SJA)lead to energy dissipation, resulting in measured velocities lower than the theoretical values. These results confirm the effectiveness of the WOF method for velocity measurement in subsonic flows and represent the first validation of its application to high-subsonic SWJ flows. 展开更多

We report a systematic experimental study on the impingement of two eccentric microjets at low to moderate Weber numbers.By conducting high-speed imaging and parametric scans,we identify several distinct film instability modes and construct a Weber number(We)-eccentricity(B)phase diagram to delineate transitions from closed to open films. In contrast to centric collisions, where jets are aligned,we find that eccentric impingement, with the jet axes offset, produces thinner films under comparable We.A momentum-based tilting model that incorporates a parabolic jet velocity profile, which reproduces measured film deflection angles and suggests the jets remain partially unrelaxed before collision.By adopting an equivalent merged-jet radius in Rayleigh-Plateau instability(RPI)scaling,we accurately predict the observed monodisperse droplet generation frequencies. These findings shed light on fluid dynamic mechanisms in eccentric microjet impingement and inform strategies for producing self-refreshing thin liquid films for liquid target or mirror applications. 展开更多

Autumn rain in western China(ARWC) is a unique and significant precipitation phenomenon that occurs during the summer-to-winter transition of the atmospheric circulation. Using the fifth generation of global climate and weather reanalysis data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and CN05.1 grid precipitation data, this study examined the anomalous characteristics and mechanisms of ARWC by combining the synergistic effect of the westerly jet and meridional wind. Over the past 60 years, ARWC has exhibited significant interdecadal and interannual variations, as well as a north-south seesaw pattern. The westerly jet index(meridional wind index) exhibited a negative(positive) correlation with precipitation in the northern autumn rain zone(NARZ), and a positive(negative) correlation with precipitation in the southern autumn rain zone(SARZ). The coupling of a weak meridional southerly wind with a southward westerly jet and a strong meridional southerly wind with a northward westerly jet are the two primary modes that synergistically influence the ARWC. These synergistic effects cause significant atmospheric changes throughout the troposphere. The contrasting circulation structure, temperature advection, vertical motion, and water vapor flux contributed to the opposite precipitation anomalies observed in the NARZ and SARZ. A new comprehensive index that reflects the coupled synergistic effect is proposed to characterize the anomalous changes in ARWC. This study improves the understanding of the anomalous characteristics and mechanisms of ARWC. 展开更多

This paper examines how natural gas disperses vertically when high-pressure pipelines with large openings fail in unconfined environments, providing insight into hazardous gas cloud development and behavior.A comprehensive study was conducted using a full-scale field experiment(1,219 mm diameter,12 MPa pressure,100 mm aperture)combined with a validated computational fluid dynamics(CFD)numerical simulation model to systematically analyze the coupling effects of pipeline pressure and ambient wind speed. The results indicate that:(1)Pipeline pressure determines the vertical jet scale, where jet height is positively correlated with pressure;at 12 MPa,the maximum jet height reaches 69.4 m(approximately 2.65 times that at 4 MPa),and the lower explosive limit(LEL)cloud area follows a quadratic polynomial trend.(2)Ambient wind speed significantly alters the diffusion trajectory;at a wind speed of 10 m/s,the LEL gas cloud area expands by 1.69 times compared to calm conditions, while the jet height is suppressed to 29.9%of the calm wind value.(3)Our developed dynamic prediction model for the hazardous gas-cloud region achieves a determination coefficient of 0.975 and maintaining prediction errors maintained within approximately 12%.The proposed empirical correlations and dynamic prediction model provide essential quantitative data support for safety-distance design and emergency-response decision-making for high-pressure natural gas pipelines. 展开更多

Ice crystal icing is an important cause of accidents in aircraft engines.Ice formation in aircraft engines can cause internal blades to freeze, affecting the quality of the air flow field and blocking the flow path.On the other hand, the entry of ice crystal particles into the combustion chamber can cause a decrease in temperature or even flameout, leading to engine surge or shutdown. Therefore,it is necessary to conduct multiphase flow tests on ice crystals for aircraft components such as aircraft engines.Conducting ice crystal multiphase flow tests on aircraft is an effective research method, but it requires the construction of an ice crystal multiphase flow test platform that meets relevant technical requirements. The paper focuses on the relevant experimental requirements and combines wind tunnel test structures to conduct multiphase flow numerical simulations on various forms of jet pipelines, obtaining particle motion distribution results. After comparison, the optimal form of jet structure is obtained, providing the best selection scheme for the design of relevant wind tunnel structures. 展开更多

The core components of an aircraft and the source of its lift are its wings, but lift generation is disrupted by the high temperature and pressure generated on the wing surface when an aircraft gun is fired. Here,to investigate how this process influences the aerodynamic parameters of aircraft wings, the k-ωshearstress-transport turbulence model and the nested dynamic grid technique are used to analyze numerically the transient process of the muzzle jet of a 30-mm small-caliber aircraft gun in highaltitude(10 km)flight with an incoming Mach number of Ma=0.8.For comparison, two other models are established, one with no projectile and the other with no wing. The results indicate that when the aircraft gun is fired, the muzzle jet acts on the wing, creating a pressure field thereon. The uneven distribution of high pressure greatly reduces the lift of the aircraft, causing oscillations in its drag and disrupting its dynamic balance, thereby affecting its flight speed and attitude.Meanwhile, the muzzle jet is obstructed by the wing, and its flow field is distorted and deformed, developing upward toward the wing.Because of the influence of the incoming flow, the shockwave front of the projectile changes from a smooth spherical shape to an irregular one,and the motion parameters of the projectile are also greatly affected by oscillations. The present results provide an important theoretical basis for how the guns of fighter aircraft influence the aerodynamic performance of the wings. 展开更多

The penetration of shaped charge jets into targets at high velocities is significantly influenced by the compressibility effect, while at low velocities, the strength effect becomes predominant. In the latter regime, material strength dictates the resistance to plastic deformation and flow,a contrast to the shockwave-dominated interactions where compressibility is key. This paper presents a self-consistent compressible penetration theory that considers both the axial penetration and radial crater growth of shaped charge jets into targets. An integrated approach where the axial and radial dynamics are coupled has been proposed, influencing each other through shared physical principles rather than being treated as separate, empirically linked phenomena. The presented theory is rooted in the compressible Bernoulli equation and the linear Rankine-Hugoniot relation. These foundational equations are employed to accurately model the high-pressure shock state and subsequent material flow at the jet-target interface, providing a robust physical basis for the penetration model.Notably,it considers the target material's compressibility, which elevates the pressure at the jet-target interface beyond that observed with incompressible materials. This pressure increase is directly proportional to the target's degree of compressibility. As such, this model of compressible penetration reorients the analytical approach:rather than merely estimating penetration resistance,it determines this value from the target material's specific compressibility and yield strength. This shift from empirical correlations to a physics-based derivation of penetration resistance enhances the model's predictive power, particularly for novel target materials or engagement conditions outside established experimental datasets. This investigation establishes a quantitative link between the material's yield strength and its penetration resistance. The accuracy of this penetration resistance value is paramount,as it significantly influences the predicted crater diameter;indeed, the crater diameter's sensitivity to this resistance underscores the necessity for its precise determination.Ultimately,by integrating the yield strength of the target material, this framework enables the prediction of both the penetration depth and the resultant crater diameter from a shaped charge jet.The theory's validation involved two experimental sets:the first focused on shaped charge jet penetration into 45#steel at varied stand-offs,while the second utilized targets of high-to ultrahigh-strength steel-fiber reactive powder concrete(RPC)with differing strength characteristics. These experimental campaigns were specifically chosen to test the theory against both ductile metallic alloys, where plastic flow is significant, and advanced quasi-brittle cementitious composites, presenting a broad spectrum of material responses and penetration challenges.Resulting hole profiles derived from theoretical calculations demonstrated a strong correspondence with empirical measurements for both material types. 展开更多

This study experimentally investigates complex wave structures and flow characteristics in a transonic free jet using two high-resolution optical diagnostics techniques:tomographic particle image velocimetry(Tomo-PIV)and tomographic background oriented schlieren(Tomo-BOS).The measurements reveal three typical flow features in the jet:the potential core, shock cells, and shear layers.Notably, the shear layer displays significant velocity gradient variations across the lip line and plays a critical role in pressure regulation. The first invariant of the velocity gradient tensor,P,effectively characterizes local compressibility effects, facilitating the identification of key flow structures. In conjunction with-Q_(s)analysis,the results emphasize shear-driven deformation and the radial decay of wave intensity.Overall, the study demonstrates that current experimental techniques enable preliminary quantitative evaluation of transonic wave phenomena, providing valuable tools for the analysis of compressible flows. 展开更多

Unlike conventional spherical charges,a shaped charge generates not only a strong shock wave and a pulsating bubble, but also a high strain rate metal jet and a ballistic wave during the underwater explosion. They show significant characteristic differences and couple each other. This paper designs and conducts experiments with shaped charges to analyze the complicated process. The effects of liner angle and weight of shaped charge on the characteristics of metal jets, waves, and bubbles are discussed. It is found that in underwater explosions, the shaped charge generates the metal jet accompanied by the ballistic wave. Then, the shock wave propagates and superimposes with the ballistic wave, and the generated bubble pulsates periodically. It is revealed that the maximum head velocity of the metal jet versus the liner angle a and length-to-diameter ratio k of the shaped charge follows the laws of 1/(α/180°)^(0.55)andλ^(0.16),respectively.The head shape and velocity of the metal jet determine the curvature and propagation speed of the initial ballistic wave, thus impacting the superposition time and region with the shock wave. Our findings also reveal that the metal jet carries away some explosion products, which hinders the bubble development, causing an inward depression of the bubble wall near the metal jet. Therefore, the maximum bubble radius and pulsation period are 5.2%and 3.9%smaller than the spherical charge with the same weight. In addition, the uneven axial energy distribution of the shaped charge leads to an oblique bubble jet formation. 展开更多

High-power laser pulses interacting with targets can generate intense electromagnetic pulses(EMPs),which can disrupt physical experimental diagnostics and even damage diagnostic equipment, posing a threat to the reliable operation of experiments. In this study,EMPs resulting from multi-petawatt laser irradiating nitrogen gas jets were systematically analyzed and investigated. The experimental results revealed that the EMP amplitude is positively correlated with the quantity and energy of the electrons captured and accelerated by the plasma channel. These factors are reflected by parameters such as laser energy and nitrogen gas jet pressure.Additionally,we propose several potential sources of EMPs produced by laser-irradiated gas jets and separately analyzed their spatiotemporal distributions. The findings provide insight into the mechanisms of EMP generation and introduce a new approach to achieve controllable EMPs by regulating the laser energy and gas jet pressure. 展开更多

In the application of high-pressure water jet assisted breaking of deep underground rock engineering, the influence mechanism of rock temperature on the rock fragmentation process under jet action is still unclear. Therefore, the fluid evolution characteristics and rock fracture behavior during jet impingement were studied. The results indicate that the breaking process of high-temperature rock by jet impact can be divided into four stages:initial fluid-solid contact stage, intense thermal exchange stage, perforation and fracturing stage, and crack propagation and penetration stage. With the increase of rock temperature, the jet reflection angles and the time required for complete cooling of the impact surface significantly decrease, while the number of cracks and crack propagation rate significantly increase, and the rock breaking critical time is shortened by up to 34.5%.Based on numerical simulation results,it was found that the center temperature of granite at 400℃ rapidly decreased from 390 to 260℃ within 0.7 s under jet impact. In addition,a critical temperature and critical heat flux prediction model considering the staged breaking of hot rocks was established. These findings provide valuable insights to guide the water jet technology assisted deep ground hot rock excavation project. 展开更多

Shaped charge has been widely used for penetrating concrete. However, due to the obvious difference between the propagation of shock waves and explosion products in water and air,the theory governing the formation of shaped charge jets in water as well as the underwater penetration effect of concrete need to be studied. In this paper,we introduced a modified forming theory of an underwater hemispherical shaped charge, and investigated the behavior of jet formation and concrete penetration in both air and water experimentally and numerically. The results show that the modified jet forming theory predicts the jet velocity of the hemispherical liner with an error of less than 10%.The underwater jets exhibit at least 3%faster and 11%longer than those in air.Concrete shows different failure modes after penetration in air and water. The depth of penetration deepens at least 18.75%after underwater penetration, accompanied by deeper crater with 65%smaller radius. Moreover, cracks throughout the entire target are formed, whereas cracks exist only near the penetration hole in air. This comprehensive study provides guidance for optimizing the structure of shaped charge and improves the understanding of the permeability effect of concrete in water. 展开更多

Large size titanium alloy parts are widely used in aerospace. However, they are difficult to manufacture using mechanical cutting technology because of severe tool wear.Electrochemical jet machining is a promising technology to achieve high efficiency, because it has high machining flexibility and no machining tool wear. However, reports on the macro electrochemical jet machining of large size titanium alloy parts are very scarce, because it is difficult to achieve effective constraint of the flow field in macro electrochemical jet machining. In addition, titanium alloy is very sensitive to fluctuation of the flow field, and a turbulent flow field would lead to serious stray corrosion. This paper reports a series of investigations of the electrochemical jet machining of titanium alloy parts.Based on the flow analysis and experiments, the machining flow field was effectively constrained.TB6 titanium alloy part with a perimeter of one meter was machined. The machined surface was smooth with no obvious machining defects. The machining process was particularly stable with no obvious spark discharge. The research provides a reference for the application of electrochemical jet machining technology to achieve large allowance material removal in the machining of large titanium alloy parts. 展开更多

Ultra-precision components have been widely used to produce advanced optoelectronic equipment. The so-called Electric field enhanced UltraViolet-Induced Jet Machining(EUV-INCJM)is an ultra-precision method that can achieve sub-nanometer level surface quality polishing. This study focuses on the application of the EUV-INCJM with different nozzle structures to a single-crystal of silicon. Two kinds of electro-optic-liquid coupling nozzles with single-jet and multi-jet focusing structures are proposed accordingly.Simulations and experiments have been conducted to verify the material removal performance of these nozzles. The simulation results show that, under the same condition, the flow velocity of the single-jet nozzle is 1.05 times higher than that achieved with the multi-jet configuration, while the current density of the latter is 1.63 times higher than that of the single-jet nozzle. For the single-crystal silicon, the material removal efficiency of the multi-jet focusing nozzle exceeds by about 1.4 times that of the single-jet.These results confirm that the material removal ability of the multi-jet configuration is more suitable for ultra-smooth surface polishing. The surface roughness of Si workpiece was reduced from Rq 1.55 to Rq 0.816 nm with valleys and peaks on its surface being almost completely removed. 展开更多

The cavity characteristics in liquid-filled containers caused by high-velocity impacts represent an important area of research in hydrodynamic ram phenomena. The dynamic expansion of the cavity induces liquid pressure variations, potentially causing catastrophic damage to the container.Current studies mainly focus on non-deforming projectiles, such as fragments, with limited exploration of shaped charge jets.In this paper,a uniquely experimental system was designed to record cavity profiles in behind-armor liquid-filled containers subjected to shaped charge jet impacts. The impact process was then numerically reproduced using the explicit simulation program ANSYS LS-DYNA with the Structured Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(S-ALE)solver.The formation mechanism, along with the dimensional and shape evolution of the cavity was investigated.Additionally, the influence of the impact kinetic energy of the jet on the cavity characteristics was analyzed. The findings reveal that the cavity profile exhibits a conical shape, primarily driven by direct jet impact and inertial effects. The expansion rates of both cavity length and maximum radius increase with jet impact kinetic energy. When the impact kinetic energy is reduced to 28.2 kJ or below, the length-to-diameter ratio of the cavity ultimately stabilizes at approximately 7. 展开更多

An abrasive water jet(AWJ)is commonly used to develop deep geothermal resources, such as drilling in hot dry rock(HDR).The influence of rock mineral properties, such as mineral types, mineral contents, and grain size,on the formation of perforation by AWJ is unclear yet.In this study,we investigate AWJ impacts on three types of granite samples with different mineral fractions using a polarizing microscope and scanning electron microscope(SEM).The results show that when the grain size is doubled, the perforation depth increases by 16.22%under the same type of structure and properties. In general, fractures are more likely to be created at the position of rough surfaces caused by abrasive impact, and the form of fractures is determined by the mineral type.In addition, microstructure analysis shows that transgranular fractures typically pass through large feldspar particles and quartz removal occurs along mineral boundaries. The longitudinal extension of perforation depends mainly on the strong kinetic energy of the jet, while the lateral extension is controlled by the backflow. The results contribute to a better understanding of the process involved in the breaking of hard rock by abrasive jets during deep geothermal drilling. 展开更多

Since the 21st century, the Huang–Huai–Hai River Basin(HHHRB)in China has experienced increased frequency and severity of drought–flood abrupt alternation(DFAA)events during early summer, characterized by droughts in June followed by floods in July. The 2024 event was the most severe since 1981.This study demonstrates that such compound extreme events are closely linked to anomalous subseasonal evolution of large-scale atmospheric circulation.During the drought phase, the East Asian subtropical westerly jet(EAJ)shifts southward, and the western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH)exhibits anomalous strengthening with its western ridge line displaced southward. The flood phase is characterized by acceleration of the EAJ,westward extension of the WPSH,and enhanced southwestern moisture transport from the western Pacific.Beyond these typical features, the 2024 early summer circulation exhibited unique characteristics:Anomalous northeastward intensification of the WPSH facilitated merged moisture influx from both the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific along the southeast pathway into the HHHRB in July, resulting in the highest net moisture inflow at the southern boundary of the HHHRB since 1981.The synergistic effects of multiple factors primarily explain the exceptionally intense DFAA event in 2024. 展开更多
