Educational discourses,or to be more specific,universities’introductory discourses have not been studied from the contrastive perspective using critical genre analysis theories.This study uses Fairclough’s framework of discourse analysis to take a corpus-based contrastive study between the Chinese and global universities’introductory discourses from three aspects.Firstly,the textual dimension will be explored using the corpus-based approach.Secondly,it studies from the discursive dimension from intertextuality and interdiscursivity.Finally,the social cultural perspective study will be given about the corresponding social cultural interpretation on the differences between Chinese and global universities’introduction discourses. 展开更多

A Study on C-E Translation of Product Introductory Texts on Company Websites Under Skopos Theory

This paper takes the C-E translation of product introductory texts on official websites of three mobile phone makers as the study object under the Skopos theory, with an aim to identify and analyze the distinctive translation features of such special type of text. The exhausted parse and analysis bring out the findings that there exists a significant translation difference between the Chinese and English-version product introductory texts on official websites. It is found that Chinese introductory texts are more inclined to rely on exquisite words and redundant expressions to describe products’ features and functions, while switching to the corresponding English version, simple vocabularies and compact sentence structure are more frequent. Hereafter, this paper raises two practical guidelines to instruct translation activities in business contexts. 展开更多

Experiences of Psychiatric Day-Care Patients during the Introductory Period in Japan

However, interruption rate of the day care treatment is high during the introductory period. The purpose of this study was to clarify the experiences of psychiatric day-care patients during the introductory period and find an approach to care. A qualitative study with thirteen patients at the </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">introductory period was designed to explore participant’s experiences through </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">semi-structured interviews. At first, patients were confused about their attitude because they paid attention to themselves, and consequently closed their </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">involvement with others. However, through therapeutic day care activities, they </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">attempted to adapt themselves and gradually turned their attention toward others and accumulated interpersonal experiences. As interactions with others became more frequent, they became conscious of themselves and others. </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Finally, while having worries about the future, they looked toward recovery and </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">became aware that they were changing. Experiences of patients during the introductory period were essential to their recovery and gave meaning to their day care usage. Nurses should collaborate with patients to determine whether day care would serve to open a patient’s life to new possibilities.</span> 展开更多

This study attempts to investigate if and how students' perceptions regarding the first accounting course related with the selection of accounting as a major. Moreover, it examines students' initial perceptions and course performance regarding the introductory accounting course. Participants in this study were 120 students from Technological Educational Institute of Kavala, School of Business and Economics (3 departments), who were asked to complete a survey instrument. The instrument used eleven statements regarding students' perceptions (such as difficulty and motivation of the course) of the first accounting course. The main factors affect students' decisions to follow accounting and seem to be similar with other researchers' findings (Geiger & Ogilby, 2000). Future research could be used larger sample from different countries and the survey could also be used for a longer time period. 展开更多

The authors aim to offer a didactic and playful alternative for the teaching of introductory accounting in undergraduation courses, such as business management, accountancy, economy, and others in which this course is offered. The aim is to show the integration of accounting contents offered in the course, applied to the most common and nearest experience of freshmen in their first year during the undergraduate program: the family. The case can be solved in two phases: In the first, during a class of up to 100 minutes, the professor develops six activities, culminating in the students answering up to four suggested questions; in the second, whose application is left to the professor, in another class further ahead, is numerical. 展开更多

Implementation of projects in this course has been shown to enhance students’ learning;in addition to increasing the ability of educators to assess students’ learning outcomes in detail. These projects are often inquiry-based and require a balance between flexibility and efficiency. Maintaining balance has provided the students’ opportunities through exploration and learner autonomy. In exploration, a student seeks new methods and options through experimenting. In this paper, we will discuss the benefits of exploration required by projects given in an introductory statistics course. The Effectiveness of Model Rocketry to Teach Science and Quantitative Content to Students in a Non-Science Majors Course at the College Level: An Example from a Planetary Geology Course

In turn, this can make it difficult to effectively teach science and math content. However, topics related to planetary exploration have a unique way of capturing one’s imagination and may serve to robustly engage non-science majors. In this contribution, I 1) describe a model rocketry lab module,?I have created and implemented into an introductory-level planetary geology course and 2) quantify student learning gains as a result of this module. This module builds on model rocketry lesson plans for science and math coursework at the K-12 level (e.g., [1]?[2])?and involves students working in groups to 1) design and build model rockets to carry out a theoretical mission that addresses a science question the students have developed, 2) launch their rockets and collect related data, 3) synthesize and evaluate their data, and 4) report their results in both oral and written forms. The tasks of building and launching the model rocket serve as a vehicle that allows students to employ the scientific process while learning about planetary mission design and applying geologic and quantitative skills useful to answering a science-related question. Quantification of student learning gains shows that through this lab module, students significantly improved their quantitative and scientific reasoning skills. Results from student questionnaires showed a significant increase in student interest and confidence in addressing scientific questions as well as an understanding of how planetary missions are designed and conducted. 展开更多
