This study explores the impact of intergenerational differences on farmers' terrace abandonment in response to increasing intergenerational differentiation among rural households and the practical issue of terrace abandonment. Logit and Tobit models are employed to conduct empirical analysis and it is found that terrace abandonment increases sequentially among the new, middle, and old generations, confirming that intergenerational differences significantly influence whether farmers abandon terraces and the terrace abandonment scale. Village characteristics and government subsidies significantly influence farmers' terrace abandonment. An increase in the number of migrant workers in the village increases terrace abandonment among new and middle generation farmers, whereas an increase in the distance from the village to the county significantly increases terrace abandonment among old generation farmers. An increase in the village's total population significantly reduces terrace abandonment among new generation farmers. An increase in government subsidies significantly reduces terrace abandonment among middle and old generation farmers. The impact of intergenerational differences on terrace abandonment is more pronounced in low-altitude areas. To reduce terrace abandonment, it is necessary to promote terrace transfer, develop characteristic agriculture, improve terrace farming subsidies, and propose targeted strategies for the different generations of farmers. 展开更多

Among Chinese migrant workers, there are obvious intergenerational differences between those who were born before and after the dividing line of 1980. The latter possess more human capital and have plans for their careers. In seeking work they tend to rely on government and the market, and they are more concerned with their long-term development. Their job stability is often quite low. They are more subject to infringement on their rights or more prone to believe that their rights have been infringed, but have a better knowledge of labor law and are bolder in the defense of their rights. Their individual consumption level is higher than that of the pre-1980 cohort, and they have a higher proportion of Intemet users. This generation is more likely to spend their spare time in recreation and entertainment. Their evaluation of and identification with society is relatively high, but they have a weakening connection with their hometowns and are therefore more willing to give up their contracted land and switch their household registration to the cities where they work. This generation of migrant workers poses a challenge not only to enterprises' ideas on management, but also to the dual urbanrural social structure. Having obtained the rights to migrate to and work in the cities, migrant workers should further obtain citizenship rights on a completely equal footing with urban residents. 展开更多

On the basis of the 2013 Chinese Social Survey(CSS)data, this paper makes an in-depth analysis of the influence of social, economic and cultural factors on the national identity of the population, with a focus on the differences between the younger and the older generation. Our findings show that the sense of national identity of the younger generation is weaker than that of the older generation, and this is even more marked among the tertiary-educated younger generation. The sense of national identity of the older generation is more influenced by social structural factors, especially by their position in the social hierarchy, while that of the younger generation is more affected by cultural and economic factors. In addition,we find that in China, the sense of national identity of the privileged stratum is stronger than that of the middle and base-level strata. These findings, which run counter to Huntington and Inglehart’s view of“the weakening of elite national identity,”may be due to the different roles of the state in globalization and economic growth. 展开更多

Educational expectations, which reflect the anticipations of individuals, parents,or teachers regarding the future educational achievements of learners, play a pivotal role in both academic achievement and personal development. The prevalent discrepancies in educational expectations between parents and children have been overlooked in numerous studies despite their potential to result in suboptimal individual behavior. This study investigated the impact and operational mechanisms of parent-child discrepancies in educational expectations on adolescent academic achievement, utilizing data from the China Education Panel Survey of the 2014-2015 academic year.Additionally, ordinary least squares regression, propensity score matching, and Bootstrap test for mediation analysis were employed. The research underscored that parent-child discrepancies in educational expectations had a significant negative impact on the academic achievement of adolescents.Specifically, the upward-biased parent-child discrepancies in educational expectations, characterized by extremely high aspirations for children to become talented individuals, were unreasonable and had a significant negative impact on academic achievement.Meanwhile,no significant relationship was observed between downward biased parent-child discrepancies in educational expectations and academic achievement.Psychological stress, academic burdens, and negative emotions mediated the relationship between upward-biased parent-child discrepancies in educational expectations and academic achievement to some extent.Furthermore, male students were more susceptible to the adverse effects of upward-biased parent-child discrepancies in educational expectations on academic achievement than female students.Based on these findings, several countermeasures and suggestions were proposed, including establishing reasonable educational expectations and enhancing parent-child communication. 展开更多
