In this paper, an intensity index of the ITCZ is proposed according to Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) in the region of (5°-20°N, 120°-150°E) in the western North Pacific (WNP). Then strong and weak ITCZ years are classified and different variables during the strong/weak ITCZ years are analyzed. The composite results show that the ITCZ anomaly is connected to the general atmospheric circulation and SST distribution. In the strong ITCZ years, the subtropical anticyclone weakens and shifts northward. Besides, there is salient cyclonic anomaly at the low level and anticyclonic anomaly at the high level. SST patterns in the preceding winter resemble to those of La Nifia. It could persist into the succeeding summer. However, it is opposite in the weak ITCZ years. The impact of the ITCZ anomaly on the tropical cyclone (TC) formation and track is also discussed. There are more TCs over the WNP (5°-20°N, 120°-150°E) in the strong ITCZ years and there is a significant increase in the northward recurving TCs. In the weak ITCZ years, fewer TCs occur and the frequency of the northwestward track is higher.展开更多

Elliptically polarized light is generated by wave plate placed in the feedback cavity. By analyzing the amplitude and phase of the laser output in the orthogonal direction, some new phenomena are firstly discovered and explained theoretically.Elliptically polarized feedback light is amplified in the gain medium in the resonator, and the direction perpendicular to the original polarization direction is easiest to oscillate. The laser intensity variation in amplitude and phase are related to the amplified mode and the anisotropy of external cavity. The theoretical analysis and experimental results agree well. Because the output characteristic of the laser has a relationship with the anisotropy of the external cavity, the phenomenon also provides a method for measuring birefringence.展开更多

The jet's influences on rainfall in China on interannual, interdecadal and sub-monthly scales are also studied using correlation and composite analyses. The results demonstrate that the interdecadal variations of the jet are significant. The Somali jet became weaker in the 1960 s and became the weakest in the early 1970 s before enhancing slowly in the late 1970 s. Moreover, the relation between the Somali jet and summer precipitation in China is close, but varies on different timescales. Preliminary analysis shows that the intensity variations in May and June during the early days of establishment are well correlated with summer precipitation in China. The Somali jet intensity on the interdecadal scale is closely related with interdecadal variations of the precipitation in China. Regardless of leading or contemporaneous correlation, the correlations between the Somali jet intensity and the rainfall in northern and southern China show obvious interdecadal variations. Moreover, the link between the anomalies of the jet intensity in May-August and precipitation evolution on synoptic scale in China is further studied. China has more rainfall with positive anomalies of the Somali jet but less rainfall with negative anomalies during the active period of the jet. The influence of positive Somali jet anomalies on China precipitation is more evident.展开更多

It is interesting if a variation of this axis can take place only in intensity, in the simplest theoretical case of only two rigid body dynamics. This paper presents two positions of the Moon during its monthly orbit, where a sudden variation of Earth’s rotation axis in intensity can take place. The duration of this phenomenon is limited in time, maybe an instant or a day, and then a vortex can appear.展开更多

The effective intensity vector gives the magnitude and direction of bending wave power flow per unit width in structures. The illtensity variation vector characterizes the circulation of local bending wave energy and varies harmon ically with space and wavenumber. This paper studies the relationship between the analysis frequency bandwidth and the measurement acctiracy of effective bending wave intensity, and ex-amines the accuracy of source localization using measured intensity vectors in two-dimensional structures. It is shown that if the analysis frequency bandwidth is wider than the sum of several one-third octave frequency bandwidths, the intensity variation can be suppressed to a negligible value in comparison with the effective intensity Moreover, a structure-borne source can be localized by measuring effective bending wave intensity vectors at a few positions, but the accuracy is dependent on the analysis frequency bandwidth, the property of the wavefield and the distance between source and measurement position. The more active the wavefield, the higher the accuracy of 8ource localization.展开更多
