Based on the theory of technology spillover in international trade, this paper discusses the technological innovation effect of trade by taking the influence of domestic trade into account. Under the constraint of the production possibility frontier, there is either complementarity or substitutability between domestic and foreign trade. It must be decided whether resources should be concentrated in one of the sectors (trade specialization) or instead allocated equally (trade equalization) between the two sectors. This paper firstly discusses how domestic trade and foreign trade work together to influence technological innovation, and how trade equalization and specialization affect different types of innovation. Using a provincial-level panel dataset from 2007 to 2015 in China, this paper constructs the indicators of domestic and foreign trade linkage and examines the impact of trade on innovation. The findings show that trade equalization mainly promotes incremental innovation, while trade specialization improves radical innovation. Thus, in the area of incremental innovation, attention should be paid to the equalized development of domestic and foreign trade, while in areas pursuing radical innovation, emphasis should be put on the specialization of the trade sector, avoiding equal allocation of resources to the two sectors. 展开更多

Firms actively participate in the production of the global value chain(GVC),which is an important driving force for economic development.Using a difference-in-difference method,our research shows that industries that are relatively more human-capital intensive experienced a larger GVC position upgrading after 2003 than they had in prior years.Second,mechanism analysis shows that human capital expansion increases firms’GVC position not only through an imported intermediate input effect but also through an innovation effect.Third,this study shows that increases in the college-educated labor force have a heterogeneous effect on a firm's GVC position across firms’various characteristics.Human capital expansion has the largest positive effect on state-owned firms relative to foreign and domestic private firms.Human capital expansion has also significantly improved the GVC position of firms located in China's eastern and central regions.The findings of this study indicate that it helps upgrading the GVC position of Chinese firms. 展开更多

This study examined how domestic environmental demand can influence countries participation in global value chains(GVCs)in the environmental sector,including waste management,pollution control,and environmental protection services.Using a crosscountry dataset,a measure of environmental demand was constructed based on population exposure to PM,,concentrations exceeding 10μg/m³.The results show that a 1 percent increase in relative domestic environmental demand increased GVC participation,raising relative production length by 0.125 percent in forward-linked GVCs and by 0.175 percent in backward-linked GVCs.Two mechanisms were identified:an intermediate climbing effect,through which higher domestic demand promoted upstream integration,and an induced innovation effect,through which larger market scale stimulated technological advancement.These findings indicate that countries with substantial environmental pressures and large domestic markets can leverage domestic environmental demand to enhance their positions in global environmental value chains and support green development. 展开更多
