Degradation of tetracycline in water using hydrogen peroxide activated by soybean residue-derived magnetic biochar

Tetracyclines (TCs) are the second most commonly used antibiotics worldwide, utilized in medical treatments and animal husbandry. Although effective against various infectious diseases, TC residues persist in the environment and contribute to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens, posing significant risks to human health. This study employed the heterogeneous Fenton process to degrade TC using soybean residue-derived magnetic biochar (Fe-SoyB) as the catalyst. The Fe-SoyB sample was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) techniques. The effects of key parameters, including pH, H2O2 concentration, catalyst dosage, and initial TC concentration, on TC degradation were investigated. The results indicated that the TC removal efficiency decreased with increasing initial TC concentration, while it was improved with higher H2O2 concentrations and greater catalyst dosages. The optimal conditions for the Fenton-like process were determined: a pH of 3, a H2O2 concentration of 245 mmol/L, an initial TC concentration of 800 mg/L, and a catalyst dosage of 0.75 g/L, achieving a removal efficiency of 90.0% after 150 min. Additionally, the TC removal efficiency of the Fe-SoyB system varied significantly across different water matrices, with 87.1% for deionized water, 78.5% for tap water, and 72.5% for river water. The catalyst demonstrated notable stability, maintaining a TC removal efficiency of 79.7% after three cycles of use. Overall, Fe-SoyB shows promise as a cost-effective catalyst for the elimination of organic pollutants in aqueous solutions. 展开更多

The recycling of plastics is a significant global concern.Due to the thermosetting properties of melamineformaldehyde(MF)resin plastics,which make heating and melting difficult,their recycling and reuse pose substantial challenges.In this study,we developed nitrogen-doped(N-doped)carbon materials through scalable carbonization of MF resin plastic waste.This metal-free N-doped carbon catalyst achieved a hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2))production rate of 971.6 mmol gcatalyst^(-1)h^(-1)with a Faradaic efficiency for H_(2)O_(2)(FEH_(2)O_(2))exceeding 90%under acidic conditions.Additionally,a flow cell utilizing this carbon catalyst demonstrated a production rate of 11.3 mol cm^(-2)h^(-1)(22.5 mol g_(catalyst)^(-1)h^(-1))and maintained a record-high current density of approximately 530 mA cm^(-2)over 300 h.In-situ electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations revealed the presence of porphyrin-like carbon defects,which serve as active sites for the continuous and stable generation of^(*)OOH species.The nitrogen-doped carbon materials obtained from large-scale carbonization of MF plastic waste exhibit abundant active sites,making them highly promising electrocatalysts for the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction(2e^(-)ORR). 展开更多

The effect of concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on the surface properties of Ni-Cr alloys was studied. Surface roughness and surface morphology of Ni-Cr alloys were evaluated by surface profiler and scanning electron microscopy after being immersed in different concentrations of H2O2 for 112 h. Surface corrosion products of Ni-Cr alloys were analyzed by photoelectron spectrograph after being immersed in 0% and 30% H2O2. The order of increasing surface roughness of Ni-Cr alloys after being immersed in different concentrations of H2O2 was 0〈3.6%〈10%〈30%. As the concentration of hydrogen peroxide increased, the surface roughness of Ni-Cr alloys increased and the surface morphology showed different degrees of corrosion. According to the XPS results, the corrosion products formed on the outmost surface layer of the studied samples are Ni(OH)2 and BeO. 展开更多

Objective To investigate the protective effects of hydrogen peroxide preconditioning (HPP) on the pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells treated with 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP^+) and to explore the potential mechanisms. Methods The viability and apoptosis of PC 12 cells were determinded by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and 4′,6′-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining, respectively. The expressions of 14-3-3 protein and phospholylated p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) were determined by Western blot. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure the activity of extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2). Results The cell viability decreased and the number of apoptotic cells increased dramatically in MPP^+ group compared with that in Control group. HPP induced a significant increase in cell viability and a marked decrease in population of apoptotic cells of the MPP^+- treated PC 12 cells, accompanied with up-regulation of 14-3-3 protein and increase of ERK 1/2 and p38 MAPK activities. The 14-3-3 protein expression was positively correlated with the phosphorylation of ERK1/2. Furthermore, inhibition of the ERK1/2 with PD98059 abolished the 14-3-3 protein up-regulation in PC 12 cells induced by HPP. Conclusion HPP protects PC 12 cells against MPP+ toxicity by up-regulating 14-3-3 protein expression through the ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK signaling pathways. 展开更多

Photocatalytic oxidation of water is a promising method to realize large-scale H2O2 production without a hazardous and energy-intensive process. In this study, we introduce a Pt/TiO2(anatase) photocatalyst to construct a simple and environmentally friendly system to achieve simultaneous H2 and H2O2 production. Both H2 and H2O2 are high-value chemicals, and their separation is automatic. Even without the assistance of a sacrificial agent, the system can reach an efficiency of 7410 and 5096 μmol g^-1 h^–1 (first 1 h) for H2 and H2O2, respectively, which is much higher than that of a commercial Pt/TiO2(anatase) system that has a similar morphology. This exceptional activity is attributed to the more favorable two-electron oxidation of water to H2O2, compared with the four-electron oxidation of water to O2. 展开更多

Epidermal bioassay demonstrated that benzylamine, a membrane-permeable weak base, can mimick hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to induce stomatal closure, and butyric acid, a membrane-permeable weak acid, can partly abolish the H2O2-induced stomatal closure. Confocal pH mapping with the probe 5-(and-6)- carboxy seminaphthorhodafluor- 1 - acetoxymethylester (SNARF-1-AM) revealed that H2O2 leads to rapid changes in cytoplasmic and vacuolar pH in guard cells of Viola faba L, i. e. alkalinization of cytoplasmic areas occur red in parallel with a decrease of the vacuolar pH, and that butyric acid pretreatment can abolish alkalinization of cytoplasmic areas and acidification of vacuolar areas of guard cells challenged with H2O2. These results imply that the alkalinization of cytoplasm via efflux of cytosol protons into the vacuole in guard cells challenged with H2O2 is important at an early stage in the signal cascade leading to stomatal closure. 展开更多

Objective To investigate the indigenous lactobacilli from the vagina of pregnant women and to screen the isolates with antagonistic potential against pathogenic microorganisms. Methods The strains were isolated from pregnant women's vagina and identified using the API50CH system. The ability of the isolates to produce hydrogen peroxide was analyzed semi-quantitatively using the TMB-HRP-MRS agar. The antagonistic effects of the isolates on pathogenic microorganisms were determined with a double layer agar plate. Results One hundred and three lactobacilli strains were isolated from 60 samples of vaginal secretion from healthy pregnant women. Among them, 78 strains could produce hydrogen peroxide, in which 68%, 80%, 80%, and 88% had antagonistic effects against Candida albicans CMCC98001, Staphylococcus aureus CMCC26003, Escherichia coli CMCC44113, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa CMCC10110, respectively. Conclusion The recovery of hydrogen peroxide-producing lactobacilli decreases with the increasing pregnant age and time. The most commonly isolated species from vagina of Chinese pregnant women are Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus crispatus. Most of L. acidophilus and L. crispatus produce a high H2O2 level. 展开更多

Photodynamic therapy(PDT),as one of the noninvasive clinical cancer phototherapies,suffers from the key drawback associated with hypoxia at the tumor microenvironment(TME),which plays an important role in protecting tumor cells from damage caused by common treatments.High concentration of hydrogen peroxide(H2O2),one of the hallmarks of TME,has been recognized as a double-edged sword,posing both challenges,and opportunities for cancer therapy.The promising perspectives,strategies,and approaches for enhanced tumor therapies,including PDT,have been developed based on the fast advances in H2O2-enabled theranostic nanomedicine.In this review,we outline the latest advances in H2O2-responsive materials,including organic and inorganic materials for enhanced PDT.Finally,the challenges and opportunities for further research on H2O2-responsive anticancer agents are envisioned. 展开更多

The performance of UV/H 2O 2, UV/O 3 and UV/H 2O 2/O 3 oxidation systems for treating spent caustic from an ethylene plant was investigated. In UV/H 2O 2 system, with the increase of H 2O 2 dosage, removal efficiencies of COD and the ratio of biochemical oxygen demand(BOD) to chemical oxygen demand(COD) of the effluent were increased and a better performance was obtained than the H 2O 2 system alone. In UV/H 2O 2 system, removal efficiency of COD reach 68% under the optimum condition, and BOD/COD ratio was significantly increased from 0 22 to 0 52. In UV/O 3 system, with the increase of O 3 dosage, removal efficiency of COD and BOD/COD ratio were increased, and a better performance was obtained than the O 3 system alone. Under the optimum condition, removal efficiency of COD was 54%, and BOD/COD ratio was significantly increased from 0 22 to 0 48. In UV/H 2O 2/O 3 system, COD removal efficiency was found to be 22.0% higher than UV/O 3 system. 展开更多

Protective effects of non-mitogenic human acidic fibroblast growth factor on hydrogen peroxide-induced damage to cardiomyocytes in vitro 被引量:6

AIM: To study the protective effect of non-mitogenic human acidic fibroblast growth factor (FGF) on cardiac oxidative injury in vivo. METHODS: Ventricular cardiomyocytes were isolated from 1- to 3-d-old neonatal SD mice and cultured in Dulbecco's minimum essential medium supplemented with 15% fetal bovine serum under an atmosphere of 50 mL/L CO2-95% air at 37℃, as well as assessed by immunooltochemical assay. We constructed the cardiomyoolte injury model by exposure to a certain concentration of H2O2. Cellular viability, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, leakage of maleic dialdehyde and anti-apoptosis effect were included to evaluate the cardiac protective effect of non-mitogenic human acidic FGF. RESULTS: Over 50% of the cardiomyocytes beat spontaneously on the 2nd d of culture and synchronously beat after being cultured for 3 d. Forty-eight hours after plating was completed, the purity of such cultures was 95% myocytes, assessed by an immunocytochemical assay. Cellular viability dramatically decreased with the increasing of the concentration of H2O2. Non-mitogenic human acidic FGF showed significant resistance to thetoxic effect of H2O2, significantly increased the cellular viability as well as the activity of SOD, and dramatically decreased the leakage of maleic dialdehyde as well as the cellular apoptosis rate. CONCLUSION: Hydrogen peroxide shows strong cytotoxicity to the cultured cardiac myocytes, and non-mitogenic human acidic FGF shows strong cardio-protective effect when exposed to a certain concentration of H2O2. 展开更多

Sedum alfredii Hance has been identified as zinc(Zn) and cadmium(Cd) co-hyperaccumulator.In this paper the relationships of Zn or Cd hyperaccumulation to the generation and the role of H2O2 in Sedum alfredii H.were examined.The results show that Zn and Cd contents in the shoots of Sedum alfredii H.treated with 1000 μmol/L Zn2+ and/or 200 μmol/L Cd2+ increased linearly within 15 d.Contents of total S,glutathione(GSH) and H2O2 in shoots also increased within 15 d,and then decreased.Total S and GSH contents in shoots were higher under Cd2+ treatment than under Zn2+ treatment.However,reverse trends of H2O2 content in shoots were obtained,in which much higher H2O2 content was observed in Zn2+-treated shoots than in Cd2+-treated shoots.Similarly,the microscopic imaging of H2O2 accumulation in leaves using H2O2 probe technique showed that much higher H2O2 accumulation was observed in the Zn2+-treated leaf than in the Cd2+-treated one.These results suggest that there are different responses in the generation of H2O2 upon exposure to Zn2+ and Cd2+ for the hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii H.And this is the first report that the generation of H2O2 may play an important role in Zn hyperaccumulation in the leaves.Our results also imply that GSH may play an important role in the detoxification of dissociated Zn/Cd and the generation of H2O2. 展开更多

The mercury species in the ocean(MeHg,Hg^(2+))will be enriched in marine organisms and threaten human health through the food chain.While the excessive H_(2)O_(2)in the metabolic process will produce hydroxyl radicals and accelerate the aging of human cells,causing a series of diseases.Hence,the cost-effective and rapid detection of mercury and H_(2)O_(2)is of urgent requirement and significance.Here,we synthesized emerging graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots(g-CNQDs)with high fluorescence quantum yield(FLQY)of 42.69%via a bottom-up strategy by a facile one-step hydrothermal method.The g-CNQDs can detect the H_(2)O_(2)and Hg^(2+)through the fluorescence quenching effect between g-CNQDs and detected substances.With the presence of KI,g-CNQDs show concentration-dependent fluorescence toward H_(2)O_(2),with a wide detection range of 1–1000μmolL^(-1)and a low detection limit of 0.23μmolL^(-1).The g-CNQDs also show sensitivity toward Hg^(2+)with a detection range of 0–0.1μmolL^(-1)and a detection limit of 0.038μmolL^(-1).This dual-function detection of g-CNQDs has better practical application capability compared to other quantum dot detection.This study may provide a new strategy for g-CNQDs preparation and construct a fluorescence probe that can be used in various systems involving H_(2)O_(2)and Hg^(2+),providing better support for future bifunctional or multifunction studies. 展开更多

The selective catalytic oxidation of toluene with hydrogen peroxide over V-Mo-based catalysts under mild conditions was studied.The promotion effect of Mo on the catalysts was studied with V/Al2O3 and Mo/Al2O3 as reference samples.The catalysts were characterized by XRD,TPR,and XPS techniques.The results show that the addition of Mo to V/Al2O3 may change the distribution of V species on Al2O3 surface.Over V-Mo/Al2O3 catalyst,highly dispersed amorphous V species facilitates benzaldehyde formation,and crystalline V2O5 species increases the conversion of toluene but decreases the selectivity to benzaldehyde,while AlVMoO7 species favors both the conversion of toluene and the formation of cresols.The yield of benzaldehyde depends remarkably on the surface O/Al and Mo/V atomic ratios,and gets to a maximum value of 13.2% with a selectivity of 79.5% at an O/Al atomic ratio of 3.0 and Mo/V atomic ratio of 0.7. 展开更多

Background:Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)has a high incidence and mortality that epitomizes one of the prominent causes of cancer-related death globally.Novel therapeutic approaches are therefore required.Reactive oxygen species(ROS)are necessary for maintaining cell cycle.Although ROS is involved in HCC progression,hydrogen peroxide(H2O2)has anti-proliferative effect on HCC.Method:HCC Huh-7 cells were cultured and incubated with various concentrations of H2O2.Paraoxonase activity,levels of malondialdehyde,glutathione and protein oxidation were measured in treated and untreated Huh-7 cells.Furthermore,untreated and treated Huh-7 cells were subjected to two dimensional gel electrophoresis and identified protein spots which were differentially expressed by LC-MS/MS analysis.q RT-PCR was performed to validate the identified proteins.Results:H2O2 depleted glutathione(GSH)with the concomitant up-regulation of GSTP1 and Prx2.H2O2 also increased malondialdehyde and protein oxidation,decreased the activity of paraoxonase in Huh-7 cells.Conclusion:H2O2 could be used as a novel therapeutic agent that might be beneficial in inducing cell cytotoxicity and hence suppress HCC proliferation. 展开更多

Two-electron(2 e^(-))oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)shows great promise for on-site electrochemical synthesis of hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2)).However,it is still a great challenge to design efficient electrocatalysts for H_(2)O_(2)synthesis.To address this issue,the logical design of the active site by controlling the geometric and electronic structures is urgently desired.Therefore,using density functional theory(DFT)computations,two kinds of hybrid double-atom supported on C_(2)N nanosheet(RuCu@C_(2)N and PdCu@C_(2)N)are screened out and their H_(2)O_(2)performances are predicted.PdCu@C_(2)N exhibits higher activity for H_(2)O_(2)synthesis with a lower overpotential of 0.12 V than RuCu@C_(2)N(0.59 V),Ru_(3)Cu(110)facet(0.60 V),and PdCu(110)facet(0.54 V).In aqueous phase,the adsorbed O_(2)is further stabilized with bulk H_(2)0 and the thermodynamic rate-determining step of 2 e^(-) ORR change.The activation barrier on PdCu@C_(2)N is 0.43 eV lower than the one on RuCu@C_(2)N with 0.68 eV.PdCu@C_(2)N is near the top of 2 e^(-) ORR volcano plot,and exhibits high selectivity of H_(2)O_(2.)This work provides guidelines for designing highly effective hybrid double-atom electrocatalysts(HDACs)for H_(2)O_(2)synthesis. 展开更多

Complete removal of the characteristic septic/swampy odor from Huangpu River source water could only be achieved under an ozone dose as high as 4.0 mg/L in an ozone-biological activated carbon (O3- BAC) process, which would lead to the production of high concentrations of carcinogenic bromate due to the high bromide content. This study investigated the possibility of simultaneous control of bromate and the septic/swampy odor by adding H2O2 prior to the O3-BAC process for the treatment of Huangpu River water. H2O2 addition could reduce the bromate concentration effectively at an H2O2/O3 (g/g) ratio of 0.5 or higher. At the same time, the septic/swampy odor removal was enhanced by the addition of H2O2, although optimization of the H2O2/O3 ratio was required for each ozone dose. At an ozone dose of 2.0 mg/L, the odor was removed completely at an H2O2/O3 ratio of 0.5. The results indicated that H2O2 application at a suitable dose could enhance the removal of the septic/swampy odor while suppressing the formation of bromate during ozonation of Huangpu River source water. 展开更多

The morphology, microstructure and sensing performance of the as-prepared AuNPs@Gr/NiF nanocomposite were characterized and measured, respectively by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, ultraviolet visible spectroscopy and chemical workstation. The asprepared AuNPs@Gr/NiF nanocomposite was used as the electrode to construct a chemical sensor for the detection of hydrogen peroxide(H2O2). The results showed that the AuNPs distributed homogenously and stably on the surface of Gr/NiF. The chemical sensor exhibits a sensitive and selective performance to the detection of H2O2. 展开更多

[Objectives] To study the effects of Roudoukou-8 San extract on hydrogen peroxide( H_2O_2) induced cardiomyocyte injury of rats and explore its action mechanism. [Methods] The cardiomyocytes of neonatal rats were isolated and cultured,and the H_2O_2 induced cardiomyocyte injury model was established. Methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium( MTT) assay was used to detect the protective effects of Roudoukou-8 San extract on H_2O_2 induced cardiomyocyte. The effects of Roudoukou-8 San on cardiomyocyte morphology were observed under inverted microscope. The contents of lactate dehydrogenase( LDH),creatine kinase( CK) and aspartate aminotransferase( AST) in cell culture medium were determined by automatic biochemical instrument; the levels of malondialdehyde( MDA),superoxide dismutase( SOD) and nitric oxide( NO) in the cells were detected by kit method. The apoptotic morphology of cardiomyocytes was observed by Hoechst fluorescence staining.Cell apoptosis were measured by Annexin V and PI double staining and flow cytometer. [Results]100 μmol/L of H_2O_2 acting 2 h could cause about 50% of cardiomyocyte injury. H_2O_2 model group showed increased cell gap,decreased cell count,cell cytoplasmic vacuoles and other obvious damages. Compared with H_2O_2 model group,in Roudoukou-8 San extract dose groups,cardiomyocyte morphology showed different degrees of improvement,Roudoukou-8 San extract can significantly reduce the content of LDH,CK and AST in H_2O_2 injured myocardial cell culture solution,significantly reduce content of MDA and NO in H_2O_2 injured myocardial cells,increase the SOD activity,and significantly inhibit the apoptosis of H_2O_2 injured myocardial cells. [Conclusions]Through improving the cell survival status,increasing the cell viability,reducing oxidative stress injury,inhibiting inflammatory responses,and inhibiting apoptosis,Roudoukou-8 San extract can improve the state of H_2O_2 induced cardiomyocyte injury,so as to protect H_2O_2 injured myocardial cells. 展开更多
