Our morphological analysis revealed that the leaves of A. hispidus var. leptocladus were significantly smaller and narrower than those of A. hispidus var. hispidus. In particular, our anatomical analysis indicated that a decreased cell number of the horizontal axis of a leaf was involved in A. hispidus var. leptocladus. This was the same process as the changing pattern of the leaves of rheophytic species, and so, similar morphological leaf modifications occurred under different selection pressures of the serpentine soil and flooding frequency of river-stream.展开更多

The stomatal size was not significantly different among these ecotypes but the density of stomata in the serpentine and coastal ecotypes was significantly lower than that of As. hispidus var. hispidus, which suggests that these ecotypes have experienced selection that reduced the density of stomata for adaptation to the dry conditions of serpentine and coastal areas.展开更多

To control these insect pests, a number of control methods have been used, including synthetic insecticides that are costly for producers. Overuse of these insecticides often leads to environmental pollution, food poisoning and resistance among the insects. A study of the biological efficacy of organic extracts from eight plant materials (Capsicum annum, Cleome viscosa, Mytragina inermis, Strophantus hispidus, Ocimum basilicum, Cassia nigricans, Cassia occidentalis) on Bactrocera dorsalis was carried out under laboratory conditions. In the laboratory, these plants were extracted using solvents of increasing polarity (n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol) according to the Nair method (Kambou et al., 2008). The biological activity test on the development of B. dorsalis was carried out in a randomized Fisher block design with 25 treatments in 10 replicates. Hexane extracts of C. annuum and S. hispidus resulted in 100% inhibition of B. dorsalis development.展开更多
