A comprehensive analysis was conducted to investigate the seismic performance of a typical tall bridge pier through incremental dynamical analysis(IDA).The effect of higher-order modes was studied specifically. The results showed that higher-order modes significantly contributed to the structural seismic response and should not be neglected.Including these modes resulted in an additional hinge midway up the pier.No plastic hinge would occur at this location for conventional bridge piers.Higher-order modes also led to an out-of-phase response between the hinge rotation at the pier bottom and the displacement at the top. This means that the displacementbased seismic design method cannot correctly predict the mechanical state of the critical hinge and therefore is not suitable for use in the seismic design of tall piers.Mistakenly using the displacement-based seismic design method for tall piers may result in a seriously unsafe condition. 展开更多

Under investigation is the n-component nonlinear Schrödinger equation with higher-order effects, which describes the ultrashort pulses in the birefringent fiber.Based on the Lax pair, the eigenfunction and generalized Darboux transformation are derived.Next,we construct several novel higher-order localized waves and classified them into three categories:(i)higher-order rogue waves interacting with bright/antidark breathers,(ii)higher-order breather fission/fusion,(iii)higherorder breather interacting with soliton. Moreover,we explore the effects of parameters on the structure, collision process and energy distribution of localized waves and these characteristics are significantly different from previous ones. Finally, the dynamical properties of these solutions are discussed in detail. 展开更多

Improved delay detached eddy simulation is performed to explore the flow features and aero-optical effects of turrets with different bottom cylinder height at a freestream Mach number Ma=0.7.Analysis of both the time-averaged and instantaneous flow features demonstrate that the shock motion causes the oscillation of separated shear layer. In flow analysis, two unsteady shock-wake-correlated modes are discerned:the asymmetric shifting mode and the symmetric breathing mode. With the increase of cylinder height, the relative energy of shock gradually increases, which goes from 26%to 59%.The proper orthogonal decomposition analysis yields the single frequency peak for the two dominant modes. The frequency peaks of shifting mode are generally at StD<0.23,while the frequency peaks of breathing mode are generally at StD>0.26.The dynamic mode decomposition analysis gives range of frequency peak. The frequency peaks of shifting mode are in the range of StD=0.11-0.23,and the frequency peaks of breathing mode are in range of StD=0.26-0.41.Optical distortion analysis indicates that the distortion calculated in five cases is linked to the breathing mode. When the beam passes through the turbulent wake,it exhibits the high-frequency and high-amplitude characteristics. 展开更多

Higher-order modes of the neutron diffusion/transport equation can be used to study the temporal behavior of nuclear reactors and can be applied in modal analysis, transient analysis, and online monitoring of the reactor core. Both the deterministic method and the Monte Carlo(MC) method can be used to solve the higher-order modes. However, MC method, compared to the deterministic method, faces challenges in terms of computational efficiency and α mode calculation stability, whereas the deterministic method encounters issues arising from homogenization-related geometric and energy spectra adaptation.Based on the higher-order mode diffusion calculation code HARMONY, we developed a new higher-order mode calculation code, HARMONY2.0, which retains the functionality of computing λ and α higher-order modes from HARMONY1.0, but enhances the ability to treat complex geometries and arbitrary energy spectra using the MC-deterministic hybrid two-step strategy. In HARMONY2.0, the mesh homogenized multigroup constants were obtained using OpenMC in the first step, and higher-order modes were then calculated with the mesh homogenized core diffusion model using the implicitly restarted Arnoldi method(IRAM), which was also adopted in the HARMONY1.0 code. In addition, to improve the calculation efficiency, particularly in large higher-order modes, event-driven parallelization/domain decomposition methods are embedded in the HARMONY2.0 code to accelerate the inner iteration of λ∕α mode using OpenMP. Furthermore, the higher-order modes of complex geometric models, such as Hoogenboom and ATR reactors for λ mode and the MUSE-4 experiment facility for the prompt α mode, were computed using diffusion theory. 展开更多

Based on the theoretical representation of piezoelectric quasicrystal,a generalized dynamic model is built to represent the transmission of wave aspects in surface acoustic pulse nano-devices.Surface elasticity, surface piezoelectricity, and surface permittivity help to include the surface effect, which equals additional thin sheets. It is shown that, under certain assumptions, this generalized dynamic model may be simplified to a few classical examples that are appropriate for both macro and nano-scale applications. In the current work, surface piezoelectricity is used to develop a theoretical model for shear horizontal(SH)waves where it contains the surface piezoelectricity theory and a linear spring model to quantitatively and qualitatively explore SH waves in an orthotropic piezoelectric quasicrystal layer overlying an elastic framework(Model I),a piezoelectric quasi-crystal nano substrate, and an orthotropic piezoelectric quasicrystal half-space(Model II).The theoretical model stimulates the numerical results, which establish the critical thickness. As the piezoelectric layer’s thickness gets closer to nanometres, surface energy must be included when analyzing dispersion properties.Furthermore, the effects of surface elasticity and density on wave velocity are investigated individually. The authors establish a parameter, precisely the ratio of the physical modulus along the width direction to along the direction of wave travel. The surface effect’s impact on the general char-acteristics of piezoelectric structures is seen as a spring force acting on bulk boundaries.Analytical presentation of frequency equations for both symmetric and anti-symmetric waves pertains to the case of an electrical short circuit in Model II.The project aims to analyze SH waves in orthogonal anisotropic, transversely isotropic piezoelectric layered nanostructures, providing a practical mathematical tool for surface effects analysis and adaptability to other wave types, including Rayleigh waves and acoustic surface waves. 展开更多

By considering higher-order effects, the properties of self-similar parabolic pulses propagating in the microstructured fibre amplifier with a normal group-velocity dispersion have been investigated. The numerical results indicate that the higher-order effects can badly distort self-similar parabolic pulse shape and optical spectrum, and at the same time the peak shift and oscillation appear, while the pulse still reveals highly linear chirp but grows into asymmetry. The influence of different higher-order effects on self-similar parabolic pulse propagation has been analysed. It shows that the self-steepening plays a more important role. We can manipulate the geometrical parameters of the microstructured fibre amplifier to gain a suitable dispersion and nonlinearity coefficient which will keep high-quality self-similar parabolic pulse propagation. These results are significant for the further study of self-similar parabolic pulse propagation. 展开更多

Aiming at mitigating end effects of empirical mode decomposition (EMD), a new approach motivated by the non- equidistance grey model (NGM) termed as NGM(1,1) is proposed. Other than trapezoid formulas, the cubic Hermite spline is put forward to improve the accuracy of derivative to the accumulated generating operation (AGO) series. Hopefully, it is worth stressing that the proposed NGM(1,1) model is particularly useful for predicting uncertainty data. Qualitative and quantitative comparisons between the proposed approach and other well-known algorithms are carried out through computer simulations on synthetic as well as natural signals. Simulation results demonstrate the proposed method can reduce end effects and improve the decomposition results of EMD. 展开更多

The combustion modes in two different scramjet combustors with the mass flow rates of 1.8 kg/s and 3.6 kg/s are experimentally investigated to explore the scaling effects on supersonic combustion with a Mach number 2.0 inflow. It is found that the scramjet combustor with a larger scale can broaden the flame rich blowout limit. As the Equivalence Ratio(ER)increases, the combustion in the small-scale combustor maintains in the cavity-stabilized mode, and the flamebase moves downstream along the cavity shear layer;however, the combustion in the large-scale combustor gradually transfers from the cavity-stabilized mode to the jet-wake-stabilized mode. The differences in the cavity residence time, the ignition delay time and the Damkohler number caused by different scales of the scramjet combustor are likely to account for the scaling effects on the combustion modes. 展开更多

To capture the presence of speech embedded in nonspeech events and background noise in shortwave non-cooperative communication, an algorithm for speech-stream detection in noisy environments is presented based on Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and statistical properties of higher-order cumulants of speech signals. With the EMD, the noise signals can be decomposed into different numbers of IMFs. Then, the fourth-order cumulant ( FOC ) can be used to extract the desired feature of statistical properties for IMF components. Since the higher-order eumulants are blind for Gaussian signals, the proposed method is especially effective regarding the problem of speech-stream detection, where the speech signal is distorted by Gaussian noise. With the self-adaptive decomposition by EMD, the proposed method can also work well for non-Gaussian noise. The experiments show that the proposed algorithm can suppress different noise types with different SNRs, and the algorithm is robust in real signal tests. 展开更多

Reliability allocation of computerized numerical controlled(CNC)lathes is very important in industry.Traditional allocation methods only focus on high-failure rate components rather than moderate failure rate components, which is not applicable in some conditions.Aiming at solving the problem of CNC lathes reliability allocating,a comprehensive reliability allocation method based on cubic transformed functions of failure modes and effects analysis(FMEA)is presented.Firstly, conventional reliability allocation methods are introduced. Then the limitations of direct combination of comprehensive allocation method with the exponential transformed FMEA method are investigated.Subsequently,a cubic transformed function is established in order to overcome these limitations.Properties of the new transformed functions are discussed by considering the failure severity and the failure occurrence.Designers can choose appropriate transform amplitudes according to their requirements. Finally,a CNC lathe and a spindle system are used as an example to verify the new allocation method.Seven criteria are considered to compare the results of the new method with traditional methods. The allocation results indicate that the new method is more flexible than traditional methods.By employing the new cubic transformed function, the method covers a wider range of problems in CNC reliability allocation without losing the advantages of traditional methods. 展开更多

To investigate the effect of higher modes on the displacement and inner forces in HWBB(hinged wall with buckling-restrained braces in base)-frame structure, distributed parameter models for both the HWBB-hinged frame structure and the HWBB-MRF(moment resisting frame)structure are built. The hinged wall is simplified as a flexural beam.BRBs(bucking-restrained braces)are simplified to a rotational spring.MRF is simplified to a shear beam.Vibration equations of distributed parameter models are derived.Natural periods, natural modes of vibration, inner forces and displacements of the distributed parameter models are derived based on the vibration equations using numerical methods. The effect of the relative stiffness ratio and the rotational stiffness ratio on the higher mode effects is investigated. For elastic structures, the global displacement and shear in MRF are predominantly controlled by the first mode, while the shear and bending moment in the wall are significantly affected by higher mode effects. The effect of the yielding of BRB on the inner forces distribution in the HWBB-hinged frame is investigated. The results indicate that the first mode will no longer contribute to the inner forces and the contribution from higher modes to inner forces increases after the BRBs yield.Displacement is not sensitive to higher mode effects and it is controlled by the first mode after the BRBs yield.Parameter analysis demonstrates that the displacement amplitudes are reduced with the increase in the flexural stiffness of the wall before the flexural stiffness reaches a certain value. The first three periods decrease with the increase in the rotational stiffness. With the increase in the rotational stiffness ratio, the contribution from the first mode decreases while contributions from both the second mode and third mode increase. 展开更多

The linear analysis of the influence of diamagnetic effect and toroidal rotation at the edge of tokamak plasmas with BOUT++ is discussed in this paper. This analysis is done by solving the dispersion relation, which is calculated through the numerical integration of the terms with different physics. This method is able to reveal the contributions of the different terms to the total growth rate. The diamagnetic effect stabilizes the ideal ballooning modes through inhibiting the contribution of curvature. The toroidal rotation effect is also able to suppress the curvaturedriving term, and the stronger shearing rate leads to a stronger stabilization effect. In addition, through linear analysis using the energy form, the curvature-driving term provides the free energy absorbed by the line-bending term, diamagnetic term and convective term. 展开更多

The analytic formulae of probability distribution of spiral plane modes for the Whittaker-Gaussian (WG) beams with orbital angular momentum (OAM) in strong turbulence regime are modeled based on the modified Rytov approximation. Numerical results show that the erosstalk range of OAM modes in the vicinity of signal mode increases with the increasing refractive-index construction parameter. However, effects of change of the width of the Gaussian envelope and the parameter Wo of WG beams on normalization energy weight of signal mode can be ignored. We find theoretically that signal spiral plane mode of WG beams at each OAM level approximatively has the same normalization energy weight, implying that the channels with WG (pseudo non-diffraction) beam have higher channel capacity than the channels with the Laguerre-Gaussian beam. 展开更多

Due to the importance of vibration effects on the functional accuracy of mechanical systems, this research aims to develop a precise model of a nonlinearly vibrating single-link mobile flexible manipulator. The manipulator consists of an elastic arm,a rotary motor, and a rigid carrier, and undergoes general in-plane rigid body motion along with elastic transverse deformation. To accurately model the elastic behavior,Timoshenko’s beam theory is used to describe the flexible arm, which accounts for rotary inertia and shear deformation effects.By applying Newton’s second law,the nonlinear governing equations of motion for the manipulator are derived as a coupled system of ordinary differential equations(ODEs)and partial differential equations(PDEs).Then, the assumed mode method(AMM)is used to solve this nonlinear system of governing equations with appropriate shape functions. The assumed modes can be obtained after solving the characteristic equation of a Timoshenko beam with clamped boundary conditions at one end and an attached mass/inertia at the other. In addition, the effect of the transverse vibration of the inextensible arm on its axial behavior is investigated.Despite the axial rigidity, the effect makes the rigid body dynamics invalid for the axial behavior of the arm. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the developed model, and the results are compared with those obtained by the finite element approach. The comparison confirms the validity of the proposed dynamic model for the system.According to the mentioned features, this model can be reliable for investigating the system’s vibrational behavior and implementing vibration control algorithms. 展开更多
