Load pattern selection is one of the critical issues in pushover analysis (POA) when the influence of higher modes is evident. In terms of interstory drift, comparisons between the nonlinear time history analysis (NL-THA) and the pushover analysis (POA) were conducted for three typical RC frame buildings under a variety of ground motion levels. Eight typical earthquake inputs, including four earthquake records and four artificial earthquake waves, were employed as the input of NL-THA; five typical lateral load patterns were considered in POA. By means of modal participation factor, the higher mode effect in POA was quantified considering floor numbers and the ground motion intensity. Suggestions about load pattern selection in POA were provided when higher mode influence was found evident. 展开更多

Nuclear power plants exhibit non-linear and time-variable dynamics. Therefore, designing a control system that sets the reactor power and forces it to follow the desired load is complicated.A supercritical water reactor(SCWR)is a fourth-generation conceptual reactor. In an SCWR,the non-linear dynamics of the reactor require a controller capable of control-ling the nonlinearities. In this study,a pressure-tube-type SCWR was controlled during reactor power maneuvering with a higher order sliding mode, and the reactor outgoing steam temperature and pressure were controlled simultaneously. In an SCWR,the temperature, pressure, and power must be maintained at a setpoint(desired value)during power maneuvering.Reactor point kinetics equations with three groups of delayed neutrons were used in the simulation.Higher-order and classic sliding mode controllers were separately manufactured to control the plant and were compared with the PI controllers speci-fied in previous studies. The controlled parameters were reactor power, steam temperature, and pressure.Notably, for these parameters, the PI controller had certain instabilities in the presence of disturbances. The classic sliding mode controller had a higher accuracy and stability;however its main drawback was the chattering phenomenon.HOSMC was highly accurate and stable and had a small computational cost.In reality,it followed the desired values without oscillations and chattering. 展开更多

This work deals with the development of a decentralized optimal control algorithm, along with a robust observer, for the relative motion control of spacecraft in leader-follower based formation. An adaptive gain higher order sliding mode observer has been proposed to estimate the velocity as well as unmeasured disturbances from the noisy position measurements.A differentiator structure containing the Lipschitz constant and Lebesgue measurable control input, is utilized for obtaining the estimates. Adaptive tuning algorithms are derived based on Lyapunov stability theory, for updating the observer gains, which will give enough flexibility in the choice of initial estimates. Moreover, it may help to cope with unexpected state jerks. The trajectory tracking problem is formulated as a finite horizon optimal control problem, which is solved online. The control constraints are incorporated by using a nonquadratic performance functional. An adaptive update law has been derived for tuning the step size in the optimization algorithm, which may help to improve the convergence speed. Moreover, it is an attractive alternative to the heuristic choice of step size for diverse operating conditions. The disturbance as well as state estimates from the higher order sliding mode observer are utilized by the plant output prediction model, which will improve the overall performance of the controller. The nonlinear dynamics defined in leader fixed Euler-Hill frame has been considered for the present work and the reference trajectories are generated using Hill-Clohessy-Wiltshire equations of unperturbed motion. The simulation results based on rigorous perturbation analysis are presented to confirm the robustness of the proposed approach. 展开更多

Surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology has been extensively explored for wireless communication, sensors, microfluidics, photonics, and quantum information processing. However, due to fabrication issues, the frequencies of SAW devices are typically limited to within a few gigahertz, which severely restricts their applications in 5G communication, precision sensing, photonics, and quantum control. To solve this critical problem, we propose a hybrid strategy that integrates a nanomanufacturing process (i.e., nanolithography) with a LiNbO_(3)/SiO_(2)/SiC heterostructure and successfully achieve a record-breaking frequency of about 44 GHz for SAW devices, in addition to large electromechanical coupling coefficients of up to 15.7%. We perform a theoretical analysis and identify the guided higher order wave modes generated on these slow-on-fast SAW platforms. To demonstrate the superior sensing performance of the proposed ultra-high-frequency SAW platforms, we perform micro-mass sensing and obtain an extremely high sensitivity of approximately 33151.9 MHz·mm2·μg−1, which is about 1011 times higher than that of a conventional quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and about 4000 times higher than that of a conventional SAW device with a frequency of 978 MHz. 展开更多

To investigate the effect of higher modes on the displacement and inner forces in HWBB(hinged wall with buckling-restrained braces in base)-frame structure, distributed parameter models for both the HWBB-hinged frame structure and the HWBB-MRF(moment resisting frame)structure are built. The hinged wall is simplified as a flexural beam.BRBs(bucking-restrained braces)are simplified to a rotational spring.MRF is simplified to a shear beam.Vibration equations of distributed parameter models are derived.Natural periods, natural modes of vibration, inner forces and displacements of the distributed parameter models are derived based on the vibration equations using numerical methods. The effect of the relative stiffness ratio and the rotational stiffness ratio on the higher mode effects is investigated. For elastic structures, the global displacement and shear in MRF are predominantly controlled by the first mode, while the shear and bending moment in the wall are significantly affected by higher mode effects. The effect of the yielding of BRB on the inner forces distribution in the HWBB-hinged frame is investigated. The results indicate that the first mode will no longer contribute to the inner forces and the contribution from higher modes to inner forces increases after the BRBs yield.Displacement is not sensitive to higher mode effects and it is controlled by the first mode after the BRBs yield.Parameter analysis demonstrates that the displacement amplitudes are reduced with the increase in the flexural stiffness of the wall before the flexural stiffness reaches a certain value. The first three periods decrease with the increase in the rotational stiffness. With the increase in the rotational stiffness ratio, the contribution from the first mode decreases while contributions from both the second mode and third mode increase. 展开更多

To investigate higher harmonics induced by a submerged obstacle in the presence of uniform current, a 2D fully nonlinear numerical wave flume(NWF) is developed by use of a time-domain higher-order boundary element method(HOBEM) based on potential flow theory. A four-point method is developed to decompose higher bound and free harmonic waves propagating upstream and downstream around the obstacle. The model predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data for free harmonics induced by a submerged horizontal cylinder in the absence of currents. This serves as a benchmark to reveal the current effects on higher harmonic waves. The peak value of non-dimensional second free harmonic amplitude is shifted upstream for the opposing current relative to that for zero current with the variation of current-free incident wave amplitude, and it is vice versa for the following current. The second-order analysis shows a resonant behavior which is related to the ratio of the cylinder diameter to the second bound mode wavelength over the cylinder. The second-order resonant position slightly downshifted for the opposing current and upshifted for the following current. 展开更多

The CLT code was used to quantitatively study the impact of toroidal mode coupling on the explosive dynamics of the m/n=3/1 double tearing mode. The focus of this study was on explosive reconnection processes,in which the energy bursts and the main mode no longer dominates when the separation between two rational surfaces is relatively large in the medium range. The development of higher m and n modes is facilitated by a relatively large separation between two rational surfaces,a small q_(min)(the minimum value of the safety factor),or low resistivity. The relationships between the higher m and n mode development, explosive reconnection rate, and position exchange of 3/1 islands are summarized for the first time.Separation plays a more important role than q_(min)in enhancing the development of higher m and n modes. At a relatively large separation, the good development of higher m and n modes greatly reduces the reconnection rate and suppresses the development of the main mode, resulting in the main mode not being able to develop sufficiently large to generate the position changes of 3/1 islands. 展开更多

An accurate estimation of the applied load pattern is an essential component in each pushover procedure. Recently, a number of adaptive pushover methods have been proposed in which the effects of the higher modes as well as the progressive changes in the dynamic characteristics of structures are taken into account to compute the applied load pattern. The basic shortcoming of these advanced pushover methods is related to employing the quadratic modal combination rule, whereby the sign reversals of the modal load vectors are suppressed. In this study, an improved displacement-based adaptive pushover method is developed in which the applied load pattern is computed using the factor modal combination rule(FMC). In the proposed procedure, multiple load patterns, depending on the number of the modes considered, are determined in order to take into account the sign reversals of different modal load vectors. The accuracy of the proposed method is verifi ed for seven moment resisting frame buildings of 3, 9 and 20 stories with regularity or vertically geometric and mass irregularities subjected to 60 earthquake ground motion records. The results showed that the proposed methodology is capable of reproducing the peak dynamic responses with very good accuracy. 展开更多

Localized nature of damage in structures requires local measurements for structural health monitoring. The local measurement means to measure the local, usually higher modes of the vibration in a structure. Three fundamental issues about the local measurement for structural health monitoring including (1) the necessity of making local measurement, (2) the difficulty of making local measurement and (3) how to make local measurement are addressed in this paper. The results from both the analysis and the tests show that the local measurement can successfully monitor the structural health status as long as the local modes are excited. Unfortunately, the results also illustrate that it is difficult to excite local modes in a structure. Therefore, in order to carry structural health monitoring into effect, we must (1) ensure that the local modes are excited, and (2) deploy enough sensors in a structure so that the local modes can be monitored. 展开更多

This paper presents the design of sliding mode controller for the output regulation of single input single output (SISO) nonlinear systems. The sliding surfaces are designed to force the error dynamics to follow proportional (P), proportional integral (PI) and proportional integral derivative (PID) dynamics. The controller parameters are obtained using probabilistic particle swarm optimization technique. A judicious selection of various sliding surfaces based on the relative degree of the systems is also elaborated. A detailed comparison of the output regulation for various systems with different relative degree is presented. Numerical simulation shows the effectiveness of the proposed method and robustness of the sliding mode controller. 展开更多

The sensitivities of the normal modes arrival time to solitary internal waves (IWs) are analyzed by using the SW06 environments. Simulation results show that the arrival time of mode 1 is relatively stable. But, there are some higher-order normal modes which arrive earlier than mode 1, and fluctuate with the appearance of solitary IWs. Explanation of the phenomenon is given based on ray theory. It is shown that, when thermocline falls down to some depths, those higher-order modes with a group of definite grazing angles mainly propagate above the thermocline and arrive earlier. 展开更多

TEn mode (whose electric field is zero in the normal direction of the boundaries between layers) and TMn mode (whose magnetic field is zero in the normal direction of the boundaries between layers) are defined. Then conditions under which pure TEn (TMn) modes may exist in multilayer waveguide structure with discontinuities are presented. E (H) step wavguides, ridged wavguides, microstrip lines and fin lines all satisfy the conditions, and hold for TEn (TMn) mode. The conventional conclusion that ridged waveguides with inhomogeneous dielectric-slab loading, microstrip lines and fin lines only hold for hybrid modes is revised. Compared with hybrid modes, the number of unknown variations and matching equations is reduced by half for pure TEn (TMn) modes, and the computation cost is decreased dramatically. 展开更多

This paper illustrates the design and simulation of a unique 500 MHz single-cell superconducting radio frequency cavity with a fluted beam pipe and a coaxial-type fundamental power coupler. The simulation results show that the cavity has a high r/Q value, a low peak surface field and a large beam aperture, so it can be a candidate cavity for high current accelerators. With the help of a fluted beam tube, almost all the higher order modes can propagate out of the cavity, especially the first two dipole modes, TE 111 and TM 110 , and the first higher monopole mode, TM 011 . In accelerator RF cavities, there exists not only the fundamental mode which is used to accelerate the beam, but also higher order modes(HOMs). The higher order modes excited by the beam can seriously affect beam quality, especially for the higher R/Q modes. 1.3 GHz low-loss 9-cell superconducting cavity as a candidate for ILC high gradient cavity, the properties of higher order mode has not been studied carefully. IHEP based on existing low loss cavity, designed and developed a large grain size 1.3 GHz low-loss 9-cell superconducting cavity(IHEP02cavity). The Superconducting Proton Linac (SPL) is the project for a superconducting, high current Haccelerator at CERN. To find dangerous higher order modes (HOMs) in the SPL superconducting cavities, simulation and analysis for the cavity model using simulation tools are necessary. The existing TESLA 9-cell cavity geometry data have been used for the initial construction of the models in HFSS. Monopole, dipole and quadrupole modes have been obtained by applying different symmetry boundaries on various cavity models. In calculation, scripting language in HFSS was used to create scripts to automatically calculate the parameters of modes in these cavity models (these scripts are also available in other cavities with different cell numbers and geometric structures). The results calculated automatically are then compared with the values given in the TESLA paper. The optimized cavity model with the minimum error will be taken as the base for further simulation of the SPL cavities. 展开更多

The Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory is considering the development of a superconducting linac-based fourth-generation hard X-ray source to meet future scientific needs of the hard X-ray user community. This work specifically focuses on the design of an optimized 5-cell superconducting radio-frequency structure well suited for a high-energy, high-beam-current energy recovery linac. The cavity design parameters are based on the APS storage ring nominal 7 GeV and 100 mA beam operation. A high-current 5-cell cw superconducting cavity operating at 1.4 GHz has been designed. In order to achieve a high current, the accelerating cavity shape has been optimized and large end-cell beam pipes have been adopted. The beam break-up threshold of the cavity has been estimated using the code TDBBU, which predicts a high threshold beam current for a 7 GeV energy recovery linac model. A copper prototype cavity has been fabricated that uses half-cell modules, initially assembled by clamping the cells together. 展开更多
