Insights into material use and economic decoupling in China’s infrastructure for sustainable development

Quantifying material use in infrastructure development and analyzing its relationship with economic growth is essential for enhancing resource efficiency and steering regional resource management toward sustainable development.This study systematically assessed infrastructure related material use in 30 provinces,autonomous regions,and municipalities in China during 1978-2022.The result indicated that material stock has experienced significant growth,increasing from 16.91×10^(9)t in 1978 to 103.60×10^(9)t in 2022,with an average annual growth rate of 4.20%.However,from 1978 to 2015,material input followed a strong upward trend but saturated after 2015.At the national level,material input peaked in 2015,after which it began to decline.The central region reached its peak earlier in 2013,while the eastern and western regions peaked in 2015.Using a decoupling analysis framework,this study revealed that nationally,the elasticity value between material stock and gross domestic product(GDP)remained near or above 1.0,reflecting continued reliance on stock accumulation.Regionally,the elasticity value between material stock and GDP has increased in the central and western regions during 1978-2022,whereas elasticity value between material stock and GDP in the eastern region showed a slower growth rate but still struggled to achieve absolute decoupling.Moreover,the elasticity value between material input and GDP has declined at the national level,presenting a relative decoupling,with some regions already achieving absolute decoupling.The eastern region was closer to absolute decoupling,while the central and western regions,though still intensive in material input,exhibited faster declines in elasticity.Accelerating the transition from linear to circular economy is an essential step for China to achieve absolute decoupling and long-term sustainability.Finally,this research recommends promoting the adoption of renewable energy,driving industrial upgrading,implementing compact urban design,and extending the lifespan of infrastructure to reduce material dependency and achieve sustainable infrastructure transformation at the national level. 展开更多

Industrial paints exacerbate air pollution by emitting volatile organic compounds during application and drying processes.This study seeks to enhance the efficiency of Chinese natural paints and increase their accessibility as bio-based alternatives,thereby mitigating the adverse effects of industrial paints on the environment.The researchers incorporated ten materials into the Chinese natural lacquer,with the formulations containing 5%titanium dioxide nanoparticles and 5%polyurethane demonstrating superior performance.These formulations reduced the drying time of the Chinese natural lacquer to 12 hours and 8 hours,respectively,under climatic conditions of 34 degrees Celsius and 64%humidity,while also improving the physical properties of the expanding materials.By experimenting with the materials and processes of contemporary lacquer art,modern lacquer material drying time test,scanning electron microscope(SEM),water droplet angle test,pencil hardness test,adhesion test and other tests,expanding the modern lacquer art materials;the researchers carried out comparative experiments of creative practice,using modern Chinese lacquer materials completely original 32 lacquer paintings,20 of which were successful;the creation of lacquer paintings using the traditional methods The creation cycle of the works using the traditional method was around 2 months,as a control,the creation cycle of the lacquer paintings using the innovative method was between 2 weeks and 3 weeks,which is a drastic reduction in time.Expanded Chinese natural lacquer can contribute to the sustainable development of traditional Chinese lacquer art. 展开更多

Kagome materials are known for hosting exotic quantum states,including quantum spin liquids,charge density waves,and unconventional superconductivity.The search for kagome monolayers is driven by their ability to exhibit neat and well-defined kagome bands near the Fermi level,which are more easily realized in the absence of interlayer interactions.However,this absence also destabilizes the monolayer forms of many bulk kagome materials,posing significant challenges to their discovery.In this work,we propose a strategy to address this challenge by utilizing oxygen vacancies in transition metal oxides within a“1+3”design framework.Through high-throughput computational screening of 349 candidate materials,we identified 12 thermodynamically stable kagome monolayers with diverse electronic and magnetic properties.These materials were classified into three categories based on their lattice geometry,symmetry,band gaps,and magnetic configurations.Detailed analysis of three representative monolayers revealed kagome band features near their Fermi levels,with orbital contributions varying between oxygen 2p and transition metal d states.This study demonstrates the feasibility of the“1+3”strategy,offering a promising approach to uncovering low-dimensional kagome materials and advancing the exploration of their quantum phenomena. 展开更多

With the increasing demand for sustainable building design,modern building ceramic materials are one of the key factors driving innovation and development in the field of architecture,thanks to their excellent performance and environmentally friendly properties.The aim of this study is to provide an insight into the development and application of building ceramic materials in modern architecture,and to assess the contribution of material innovation to architectural design and sustainability goals by synthesising and analysing recent technological advances and case studies in this field.This study adopts a systematic literature review approach to screen and analyse a large number of academic articles and practical project reports on material innovation in building ceramics.Comparative analyses of different material properties,advances in production processes and the effects of their application in real building projects reveal the potential of building ceramic materials to improve the energy efficiency,extend the service life and enhance the aesthetic design of buildings.The findings show that the environmental and energy issues facing traditional building materials,such as improved thermal efficiency and a reduction in the overall carbon footprint of buildings,can be effectively addressed through the use of new building ceramic materials and technologies.In addition,the innovative use of architectural ceramics provides architects with more design flexibility,enabling them to create architectural works that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional.In the concluding section,the paper highlights the importance of continuing to explore technological innovations in building ceramic materials and how these innovations can contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly building industry.Future research should further explore new areas of application for ceramic materials and how interdisciplinary collaboration can accelerate the practical application of these material technologies. 展开更多
