Prediction and control of the permanent settlement of a track caused by traffic loading from trains is crucial to high-speed railway design and maintenance. In this study, a unified prediction model of accumulative deformation of geomaterials used in railway construction subjected to cyclic loadings is introduced and calibrated using physical model testing. Based on this versatile model, a calculation approach to determine the track structure settlement under repeated loadings caused by the movement of the wheel axle of the train is proposed. Regression analysis on the physical model testing is adopted to determine the parameters involved in the computational approach. Comparison of model test data and computed results shows that the parameters obtained from the back-analysis are consistent throughout the various testing conditions, and the proposed calculation approach is capable of satisfactorily predicting the accumulative settlement of the railway roadbed and subgrade soil for various axle loads and loading cycles. A case study of a high-speed railway is performed to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach in realistic engineering applications. The computation results from the settlement development of a roadbed and subgrade soil are presented and discussed. 展开更多

The development of analysis on train-induced ground vibration is briefly summarized. A train-track- ground integrated dynamic model is introduced in the paper to predict the ground vibration induced by high-speed trains. Representative dynamic responses of the train-track-ground system predicted by the model are presented. Some major results measured from two field tests on the ground vibration induced by two high-speed trains are reported. Numerical prediction with the proposed train-track-ground model is validated by the high-speed train running experiments. Research results show that the wheel/rail dynamic interaction caused by track irregularities has a significant influence on the ground acceleration and little influence on the ground displacement. The main frequencies of the ground vibration induced by high-speed trains are usually below 80 Hz. Compared with the ballasted track, the ballastless track structure can produce much larger train-induced ground vibration at frequencies above 40 Hz. The vertical ground vibration is much larger than the lateral and longitudinal components. 展开更多

Stratum deformation(settlement) is a challenging issue in tunnel engineering, especially when construction of metro tunnels has to undercut high-speed railway. For this purpose, we used the FLAC30 software to analyze the stratum settlement characteristics of high-speed railway at different crossing angles intersected by metro tunnel, in terms of ground settlement trough, stratum slip line and irregularity of ballastless tracks. According to the evolution of the stratum settlement at different angle regions, an optimized angle is proposed for the actual project design. In order to reduce the influence of stratum settlement on the safety of high-speed railway, an approach of safety assessment is proposed for the shield engineering undercutting high-speed railway, as per Chinese specifications using numerical results and on-site conditions. A case study is conducted for the shield tunnel section crossing the Wuhan-Guangzhou High-speed Railway between the Guangzhou North Railway Station and the Huacheng Road Station, which represents the first metro tunnel project passing below a high-speed railway in China. A series of measures is taken to ensure the safe excavation of the shield tunnel and the operation of the high-speed railway. The results can provide a technical support for performing a safety evaluation between high-speed railways and metro tunnels. 展开更多

This study compares the microstructural evolution, dynamic recrystallization(DRX)behavior, tensile properties, and age-hardenability between the newly developed high-speed-extrudable BA56 alloy and those of the widely recognized AZ31 alloy in industry.Unlike the AZ31 alloy, which retains partially unrecrystallized grains, the high-speed-extruded BA56 alloy demonstrates a coarser but entirely recrystallized and more homogeneous microstructure. The fine-grained structure and abundant Mg_(3)Bi_(2) particles in the BA56 extrusion billet significantly enhance its DRX behavior, thus enabling rapid and complete recrystallization during extrusion. The BA56 alloy contains band-like fragmented Mg_(3)Bi_(2) particles and numerous fine Mg_(3)Bi_(2) particles distributed throughout the material,in contrast to the sparse Al_(8)Mn_(5) particles in the AZ31 alloy. These features contribute to superior mechanical properties of the BA56 alloy, which achieves tensile yield and ultimate tensile strengths of 205 and 292 MPa,respectively, compared to 196 and 270 MPa for the AZ31 alloy. The superior strength of the BA56 alloy, even with its coarser grain size, can be explained by its elevated Hall-Petch constant and the strengthening contribution from the fine Mg_(3)Bi_(2) particles.Additionally, the BA56 alloy demonstrates significant age-hardenability,achieving a 22%enhancement in hardness following T5 aging, attributed to the precipitation of nanoscale Mg_(3)Bi_(2) and Mg_(17)Al_(12) phases.By contrast, the AZ31 alloy shows minimal hardening due to the absence of precipitate formation during aging. These findings suggest that the BA56 alloy is a promising candidate for the production of extruded Mg components requiring a combination of high productivity, superior mechanical performance, and wide-ranging process adaptability. 展开更多

The pile-supported subgrade has been widely used in high-speed railway construction in China. To investigate the ground vibrations of such composite foundation subjected to moving loads induced by high-speed trains(HSTs),three-dimensional(3D)finite element method(FEM)models involving the pile, pile cap and cushion are established.Validation of the proposed model is conducted through comparison of model predictions with the field measurements. On this basis, ground vibrations generated by HSTs under different train speeds as well as the ground vibration attenuation with the distance away from the track centerline are investigated. In addition, the effects of piles and pile elastic modulus on ground vibrations are well studied. Results show that the pile-reinforcement of the subgrade could significantly contribute to the reduction of ground vibrations. In particular, the increase of elastic modulus of pile could lead to consistent reduction of ground vibrations. However, when the pile elastic modulus is beyond 10 GPa,this benefit of pile-reinforcement on vibration isolation can hardly be increased further. 展开更多

The influence of ramps on the transient rolling contact characteristics and damage mechanisms of switch rails remains unclear, presenting substantial challenges to the safety of railway operations. To this end, this paper constructs a transient rolling contact finite element model of the wheel-rail in switch under different ramps using ANSYS/LSDYNA method, and analyzes the tribology and damage characteristics when the wheel passes through the switch at a uniform speed. Our research findings reveal that the vibration induced in the switch rail during the wheel load transfer process leads to a step-like increase in the contact force. Moreover, the interaction between the wheel and the rail primarily involves slip contact, which may significantly contribute to the formation of corrugations on the switch rail.Additionally, the presence of large ramps exacerbates switch rail wear and rolling contact fatigue, resulting in a notable 13.2%increase in switch rail damage under 40‰ramp conditions compared to flat(0‰ramp)conditions.Furthermore,the large ramps can alter the direction of crack propagation, ultimately causing surface spalling of the rail. Therefore, large ramps intensify the dynamic interactions during the wheel load transfer process, further aggravating the crack and spalling damage to the switch rails. 展开更多

Based on the investigation of mechanical response and microstructure evolution of a commercial 7003 aluminum alloy under high-speed impact,a new simple and effective method was proposed to determine the critical strain required for the nucleation of adiabatic shear band(ASB).The deformation results of cylindrical and hat-shaped samples show that the critical strain required for ASB nucleation corresponds to the strain at the first local minimum after peak stress on the first derivative curve of true stress−true strain. The method of determining the critical strain for the nucleation of ASB through the first derivative of the flow stress curve is named the first derivative method. The proposed first derivative method is not only applicable to the 7003 aluminum alloy, but also to other metal materials, such as commercial purity titanium,WY-100 steel, and AM80 magnesium alloy. This proves that it has strong universality. 展开更多

Due to operational wear and uneven carbon absorption in compressor and turbine wheels, the unbalance(me) vibration is induced and could lead to sub?synchronous vibration accidents for high?speed turbocharger(TC). There are very few research works that focus on the magnitude e ects on such induced unbalance vibration. In this paper, a finite element model(FEM) is developed to characterize a realistic automotive TC rotor with floating ring bearings(FRBs). The nonlinear dynamic responses of the TC rotor system with di erent levels of induced unbalance magni?tude in compressor and turbine wheels are calculated. From the results of waterfall and response spectral intensity plots, the bifurcation and instability phenomena depend on unbalance magnitude during the startup of TC. The sub?synchronous component 0.12× caused rotor unstable is the dominant frequency for small induced unbalance. The nonlinear e ects of induced unbalance in the turbine wheel is obvious stronger than the compressor wheel. As the unbalance magnitude increases from 0.05 gbration 1·mm to 0.2 g·mm, the vibration component changes from mainly 0.12× to synchronous vi×. When unbalance increases continuously, the rotor vibration response amplitude is rapidly growing and the 1× caused by the large unbalance excitation becomes the dominant frequency. A suitable un?balance magnitude of turbine wheel and compressor wheel for the high?speed TC rotor with FRBs is proposed: the value of induced un?balance magnitude should be kept around 0.2 g·mm. 展开更多

Purpose–The bridge expansion joint(BEJ)is a key device for accommodating spatial displacement at the beam end,and for providing vertical support for running trains passing over the gap between the main bridge and the approach bridge. For long-span railway bridges,it must also be coordinated with rail expansion joint(REJ),which is necessary to accommodate the expansion and contraction of,and reducing longitudinal stress in,the rails. The main aim of this study is to present analysis of recent developments in the research and application of BEJs in high-speed railway(HSR)long-span bridges in China, and to propose a performance-based integral design method for BEJs used with REJs,from both theoretical and engineering perspectives.Design/methodology/approach–The study first presents a summary on the application and maintenance of BEJs in HSR long-span bridges in China representing an overview of their state of development. Results of a survey of typical BEJ faults were analyzed, and field testing was conducted on a railway cable-stayed bridge in order to obtain information on the major mechanical characteristics of its BEJ under train load.Based on the above,a performance-based integral design method for BEJs with maximum expansion range 1600 mm(±800 mm),was proposed, covering all stages from overall conceptual design to consideration of detailed structural design issues. The performance of the novel BEJ design thus derived was then verified via theoretical analysis under different scenarios,full-scale model testing, and field testing and commissioning.Findings–Two major types of BEJs,deck-type and through-type,are used in HSR long-span bridges in China.Typical BEJ faults were found to mainly include skewness of steel sleepers at the bridge gap, abnormally large longitudinal frictional resistance, and flexural deformation of the scissor mechanisms. These faults influence BEJ functioning, and thus adversely affect track quality and train running performance at the beam end.Due to their simple and integral structure,deck-type BEJs with expansion range 1200 mm(±600 mm)or less have been favored as a solution offering improved operational conditions, and have emerged as a standard design. However, when the expansion range exceeds the above-mentioned value, special design work becomes necessary. Therefore, based on engineering practice,a performance-based integral design method for BEJs used with REJs was proposed, taking into account four major categories of performance requirements,i.e.,mechanical characteristics, train running quality, durability and insulation performance.Overall BEJ design must mainly consider component strength and the overall stiffness of BEJ;the latter factor in particular has a decisive influence on train running performance at the beam end.Detailed BEJ structural design must stress minimization of the frictional resistance of its sliding surface. The static and dynamic performance of the newlydesigned BEJ with expansion range 1600 mm have been confirmed to be satisfactory, via numerical simulation,full-scale model testing, and field testing and commissioning.Originality/value–This research provides a broad overview of the status of BEJs with large expansion range in HSR long-span bridges in China, along with novel insights into their design. 展开更多

This paper presents the moving mechanism of a high-speed insect-scale microrobot via electromagnetically induced vibration of two simply supported beams. The microrobot, which has a body length of 12.3 mm and a total mass of 137 mg,can achieve reciprocating lift motion of forelegs without any intermediate linkage mechanisms due to the design of an obliquely upward body tilt angle. The gait study shows that the body tilt angle prevents the forelegs from swinging backward when the feet contact the ground, which results in a forward friction force applied on the feet.During forward movement, the microrobot utilizes the elastic deformation of the simply supported beams as driving force to slide forward and its forelegs and rear legs work as pivots alternatively in a way similar to the movement of soft worms. The gait analysis also indicates that the moving direction of the microrobot is determined by whether its body tilt angle is obliquely upward or downward, and its moving speed is also related to the body tilt angle and as well as the body height.Under an applied AC voltage of 4 V,the microrobot can achieve a moving speed at 23.2 cm s1(18.9 body lengths per second),which is comparable to the fastest speed(20 cm s-1 or 20 body lengths per second)among the published insect-scale microrobots. The high-speed locomotion performance of the microrobot validates the feasibility of the presented actuation scheme and moving mechanism. 展开更多

Knowledge on size distribution of bubbles in a flotation system is highly important. In this study, bubble distributions in different reagent concentrations, electrolyte concentrations, cathode apertures, and current densities in electroflotation are determined using a high-speed camera. Ventilation systems are critical for improving the cabin environment in high-speed trains, and their interest has increased significantly. However, whether air supply non-verticality deteriorates the cabin air environment, and the flow mechanism behind it and the degree of deterioration are not known. This study first analyzes the interaction between deflection angle and cabin flow field characteristics and ventilation performance. The results revealed that the interior temperature and pollutant concentration decreased slightly with increasing deflection angle, but resulted in significant deterioration of thermal comfort and air quality. This is evidenced by an increase in both draught rate and non-uniformity coefficient,an increase in the number of measurement points that do not satisfy the micro-wind speed and temperature difference requirements by about 5% and 15%,respectively,and an increase in longitudinal penetration of pollutants by a factor of about 5 and the appearance of locking regions at the ends of cabin. The results also show that changing the deflection pattern only affects the region of deterioration and does not essentially improve this deterioration. This study can provide reference and help for the ventilation design of high-speed trains. 展开更多

High-speed trains operating in freezing rain are highly susceptible to severe ice accretion in the pantograph region, which compromises both power transmission efficiency and dynamic performance. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms of this phenomenon,an Euler-Euler multiphase flow model was employed to simulate droplet impingement and collection on the pantograph surface, while a glaze-ice formation model incorporating wall film dynamics was used to capture the subsequent growth of ice.The effects of key parameters—including liquid water content, ambient temperature, train velocity, and droplet diameter—on the amount and morphology of ice were systematically investigated. The results show that ice accumulation intensifies with increasing liquid water content decreasing ambient temperature, and rising train speed. In contrast, larger droplet diameters reduce the overall ice mass but promote localized accretion on major structural elements. This behavior arises because larger droplets, with greater inertia, are less susceptible to entrainment by airflow into the pantograph's base region.During extended operation, substantial ice buildup develops on the pantograph head and upper and lower arms, severely impairing current collection from the overhead line and hindering the pantograph's lifting and lowering motions. 展开更多

High-speed imaging is crucial for understanding the transient dynamics of the world, but conventional frame-by-frame video acquisition is limited by specialized hardware and substantial data storage requirements. We introduce“SpeedShot,”a computational imaging framework for efficient high-speed video imaging.SpeedShot features a low-speed dual-camera setup, which simultaneously captures two temporally coded snapshots.Cross-referencing these two snapshots extracts a multiplexed temporal gradient image, producing a compact and multiframe motion representation for video reconstruction.Recognizing the unique temporal-only modulation model,we propose an explicable motion-guided scale-recurrent transformer for video decoding. It exploits cross-scale error maps to bolster the cycle consistency between predicted and observed data.Evaluations on both simulated datasets and real imaging setups demonstrate SpeedShot’s effectiveness in video-rate up-conversion,with pronounced improvement over video frame interpolation and deblurring methods. The proposed framework is compatible with commercial low-speed cameras, offering a versatile low-bandwidth alternative for video-related applications, such as video surveillance and sports analysis. 展开更多

Electric current heat treatment is an innovative technique to improve microstructures and mechanical properties of metallic materials. The microstructures and mechanical properties of a powder metallurgy high-speed steel(PM-HSS)treated by electric current heat treatment and traditional heat treatment are comparatively investigated. Results showed that after austenitizing at 1130°C,the structure of PM-HSS sample composed of ferrite matrix,M_(6)C,M_(23)C_(6),and MC carbides, transformed into a martensite matrix accompanied by M_(6)C and MC carbides.Compared to the traditional austenitizing at 1130℃ for 30 min,the electric current austenitizing at 1130℃ for 5 min dissolved more carbides, resulting in a greater solid solution of alloying elements in the matrix.Further traditional triple tempering led to carbide coarsening, whereas electric current triple tempering promoted the carbide dissolution.Notably, the dissolution of more carbides resulted in a higher C content in the martensite matrix of HSS treated by electric current, significantly promoting the formation of nanotwins(5-20 nm in width). The electric current triple tempering sample exhibited a yield strength of 3097 MPa,compressive strength of 5016 MPa,and a fracture strain of 30.0%,outperforming the traditional triple tempering sample by nearly 600 MPa in yield strength.Analysis revealed that this significant strengthening was primarily attributed to nanotwin formation and solid solution strengthening caused by carbide dissolution. 展开更多

High-speed railway bridges are essential components of any railway transportation system that should keep adequate levels of serviceability and safety. In this context,drive-by methodologies have emerged as a feasible and cost-effective monitor-ing solution for detecting damage on railway bridges while minimizing train operation interruptions. Moreover, integrating advanced sensor technologies and machine learning algorithms has significantly enhanced structural health monitoring(SHM)for bridges.Despite being increasingly used in traditional SHM applications, studies using autoencoders within drive-by methodologies are rare, especially in the railway field. This study presents a novel approach for drive-by damage detection in HSR bridges. The methodology relies on acceleration records collected from multiple bridge crossings by an operational train equipped with onboard sensors.Log-Mel spectrogram features derived from the acceleration records are used together with sparse autoencoders for computing statistical distribution-based damage indexes.Numerical simulations were performed on a 3D vehicle-track-bridge interaction system model implemented in Matlab to evaluate the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed approach, considering several damage scenarios, vehicle speeds, and environmental and operational variations, such as multiple track irregularities and varying measurement noise. The results show that the pro-posed approach can successfully detect damages,as well as characterize their severity, especially for very early-stage dam-ages.This demonstrates the high potential of applying Mel-frequency damage-sensitive features associated with machine learning algorithms in the drive-by condition assessment of high-speed railway bridges. 展开更多

Purpose–Regarding that Ultraviolet radiation, pollutant adsorption, and environmental changes may be the main reasons for the aging and yellowing on windshield rubber in high-speed trains, countermeasures are proposed to solve the aging and yellowing of windshield rubber and reduce the adverse effects caused by rubber yellowing.Design/methodology/approach–Scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS)were used to test the yellowed windshield rubber.Aging tests, including UVaging, natural aging and salt spray aging, were conducted to analyze the effects of aging on the windshield rubber.Different cleaning agents were selected to soak the windshield rubber, and the quality, hardness, and surface appearance of the rubber samples were tested.Findings–After UV aging, antioxidants migrated to the surface of the windshield rubber, but due to oxidation failure, they could not capture free radicals, leading to continued oxidation reactions within the material and resulting in yellowing of the rubber in a short period of time.Originality/value–Cleaning agents have a minimal impact on windshield rubber,UV aging has the greatest impact and natural aging is a gradual and slow deterioration process.Through daily deep cleaning and maintenance with protective agents at regular intervals, the deterioration of windshield rubber yellowing in high-speed trains can be effectively suppressed. 展开更多

Purpose–This paper investigates how high-speed rail(HSR)influences socioeconomic inequality by providing the first systematic bibliometric review of research trends, methodological approaches and thematic structures. It examines whether HSR fosters balanced regional development or reinforces spatial disparities.Design/methodology/approach–Using the Bibliometrix R package,237 records were retrieved from the Web of Science(1985–2024).Citation indicators, keyword co-occurrence and collaboration networks were combined with natural language processing(NLP)to classify studies by territorial scale, methodology, economic variables and inequality outcomes.Findings–The paper offers the first structured overview of how the literature conceptualizes the link between HSR and inequality. It highlights persistent gaps–scarcity of city-level analyses, limited socioeconomic indicators and reliance on Chinese case studies–providing a foundation for more comparative and interdisciplinary research.Originality/value–This paper contributes by offering a structured overview of how the literature has conceptualized and measured the relationship between HSR and inequality.By identifying persistent research gaps–such as the scarcity of city-level analyses, limited use of socioeconomic indicators, and overreliance on Chinese case studies–it provides a foundation for more comparative and interdisciplinary approaches. The study informs policymakers and researchers on how to design future infrastructure projects that balance efficiency with equity. 展开更多
