An input-output signal selection based on Phillips-Heffron model of a parallel high voltage alternative current/high voltage direct current(HVAC/HVDC) power system is presented to study power system stability. It is well known that appropriate coupling of inputs-outputs signals in the multivariable HVDC-HVAC system can improve the performance of designed supplemetary controller. In this work, different analysis techniques are used to measure controllability and observability of electromechanical oscillation mode. Also inputs–outputs interactions are considered and suggestions are drawn to select the best signal pair through the system inputs-outputs. In addition, a supplementary online adaptive controller for nonlinear HVDC to damp low frequency oscillations in a weakly connected system is proposed. The results obtained using MATLAB software show that the best output-input for damping controller design is rotor speed deviation as out put and phase angle of rectifier as in put. Also response of system equipped with adaptive damping controller based on HVDC system has appropriate performance when it is faced with faults and disturbance. 展开更多

This paper describes a prototype power delivery system developed for high voltage electronic current transformer (ECT) that uses laser light to transfer power to and communicates with the primary converter. The design is based on optical-to-electrical power converters, solid-state diode lasers and optical fibers. Command signals are transmitted via the same up-fiber used to send power from secondary power supply to primary converter. The upward data transmission is completed during the brief interruption of power delivery without affecting steady power-supply. A simple comparator added to the primary converter can take the command data. Experimental results show that the fibers can provide reliable up-link for data transmission at 200 kb/s from the secondary to the primary converter. Based on the delivery system, the secondary converter can control three auxiliary channels to provide additional information. These monitoring channels are used in a time-multiplexing mode to provide information about the operation temperature, voltage and current at the remote unit for monitoring the ECT. This preventive maintenance or built-in test can increase reliability by giving early warning for necessary maintenance request. 展开更多

This paper presents a frequency support strategy for the diode rectifier unit(DRU)-high-voltage direct current(HVDC)-based offshore wind power integration system,which coordinates multiple power sources without communication to reduce receiving grid frequency fluctuations.First,based on the deduced DRU's frequency transfer characteristic,a fine-designed ripple carrying frequency information is superimposed on the HVDC link,transferring the onshore frequency to offshore wind turbines(WTs)via the DC ripple and coupled AC harmonic without communication.Second,multiple power sources are utilized for frequency support,including HVDC capacitance and grid-forming WTs combined with energy storage systems,and appropriate sources are activated in the order specified by the designed thresholds.Finally,the effectiveness of the proposed frequency support strategy is verified by simulations in PSCAD/EMTDC. 展开更多

Ultra-high-voltage direct current wall bushings are critical components in direct current transmission systems.Temperature variations and abnormal distributions can signal potential equipment failures that threaten system stability.Therefore,monitoring these critical multi-point temperature variations is essential.However,the unique design of the bushings,featuring insulation sheds of periodic shape,distorts infrared temperature measurements by introducing interference points.These interference points,dependent on the measurement's angle and distance,appear irregularly in infrared images,severely impacting the accuracy of multi-point temperature distribution assessments.To address this challenge,an anomaly detection method is proposed that adaptively identifies interference points.The method identifies interference points by comparing pixels and uses a voting mechanism to improve identification accuracy.Compared with traditional methods,this approach presents two main advantages:adaptive identification capability,which enables it to recognise interference points and adapt to changing conditions,and unsupervised learning,which enables it to work effectively without requiring manually labelled data.Experimental tests on 161 bushing infrared images demonstrate the effectiveness of the method,achieving a 100%success rate in identifying localised overheating issues.The method has been integrated into high-voltage direct current transmission anomaly systems and can be used to monitor critical equipment,enhancing system reliability and safety. 展开更多

Due to the low impedance characteristic of the high voltage direct current(HVDC)grid,the fault current rises extremely fast after a DC-side fault occurs,and this phenomenon seriously endangers the safety of the HVDC grid.In order to suppress the rising speed of the fault current and reduce the current interruption requirements of the main breaker(MB),a fault current limiting hybrid DC circuit breaker(FCL-HCB)has been proposed in this paper,and it has the capability of bidirectional fault current limiting and fault current interruption.After the occurrence of the overcurrent in the HVDC grid,the current limiting circuit(CLC)of FCL-HCB is put into operation immediately,and whether the protected line is cut off or resumed to normal operation is decided according to the fault detection result.Compared with the traditional hybrid DC circuit breaker(HCB),the required number of semiconductor switches and the peak value of fault current after fault occurs are greatly reduced by adopting the proposed device.Extensive simulations also verify the effectiveness of the proposed FCL-HCB. 展开更多

Voltage source converter based high voltage direct current(VSC-HVDC)can participate in voltage regulation by flexible control to help maintain the voltage stability of the power grid.In order to quantitatively evaluate its influence on the voltage interaction between VSC-HVDC and line commutated converter based high voltage direct current(LCC-HVDC),this paper proposes a hybrid multi-infeed interaction factor(HMIIF)calculation method considering the voltage regulation control characteristics of VSC-HVDC.Firstly,for a hybrid multi-infeed high voltage direct current system,an additional equivalent operating admittance matrix is constructed to characterize HVDC equipment characteristics under small disturbance.Secondly,based on the characteristic curve between the reactive power and the voltage of a certain VSC-HVDC project,the additional equivalent operating admittance of VSC-HVDC is derived.The additional equivalent operating admittance matrix calculation method is proposed.Thirdly,the equivalent bus impedance matrix is obtained by modifying the alternating current(AC)system admittance matrix with the additional equivalent operating admittance matrix.On this basis,the HMIIF calculation method based on the equivalent bus impedance ratio is proposed.Finally,the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified in a hybrid dual-infeed high voltage direct current system constructed in Power Systems Computer Aided Design(PSCAD),and the influence of voltage regulation control on HMIIF is analyzed. 展开更多

An online partial discharge(PD) measurement performed on a high voltage direct current(HVDC) wall bushing successfully identified the presence of internal discharges.The wall bushing is a sulfur hexafluoride gas-insulated bushing,rated for 500 kV dc and terminated on a thyristor-controlled HVDC converter bridge.The measurement of PD within the HVDC station environment is particularly challenging due to the high levels of electromagnetic noise caused by thyristor switching events and external air-corona from the neighboring high-voltage equipment.An additional challenge is the""mixed"voltage stress on the bushing insulation,which has both ac and dc high-voltage components.There are also fast transients during the firing of thyristors in the HVDC conversion process that cause added stress to the insulation.As a result,the analysis and interpretation of PD data for HVDC equipment is more complex;PD pulses may occur in response to the ac,dc,or switching transient voltage stresses.In this paper,an online PD measurement strategy for noise filtering and isolation of PD sources within the bushing are discussed.The PD measurement data is plotted on a phase-resolved diagram where the line supply power cord voltage was used as a reference. The phase-resolved diagram appears to suggest that the fast transients,caused during switching,trigger some PD events.Measurements were also performed with the aid of a modern PD measurement instrument having noise separation capabilities.The findings from the online PD measurements are verified with physical evidence,found after the bushing was removed from service,suggested internal PD had occurred inside the bushing. 展开更多

Wind energy sources have different structures and functions from conventional power plants in the power system.These resources can affect the exchange of active and reactive power of the network.Therefore,power system stability will be affected by the performance of wind power plants,especially in the event of a fault.In this paper,the improvement of the dynamic stability in power system equipped by wind farm is examined through the supplementary controller design in the high voltage direct current(HVDC)based on voltage source converter(VSC)transmission system.In this regard,impacts of the VSC HVDC system and wind farm on the improvement of system stability are considered.Also,an algorithm based on controllability(observability)concept is proposed to select most appropriate and effective coupling between inputs-outputs(IO)signals of system in different work conditions.The selected coupling is used to apply damping controller signal.Finally,a fractional order PID controller(FO-PID)based on exchange market algorithm(EMA)is designed as damping controller.The analysis of the results shows that the wind farm does not directly contribute to the improvement of the dynamic stability of power system.However,it can increase the controllability of the oscillatory mode and improve the performance of the supplementary controller. 展开更多

Laminar plasma jet(LPJ)generated by laminar plasma torch(LPT)has a favorable temperature and velocity distribution.Thus,it is superior to the turbulent plasma jet in material processing.However,most of the reported LPTs usually operate at a relatively low output power with a relatively low arc voltage and thermal efficiency,which limits its capabilities.In this context,this paper attempts to design a new type of high-power LPT with a relatively low arc current and a high thermal efficiency.In the first section,the design principle of the main components is studied and discussed in detail,and a new high-power LPT is proposed.Then,the experimental characteristics of the proposed high-power LPT are examined.Experimental results reveal the following characteristics of the proposed LPT.(1)The max jet length of the proposed LPT reaches at 540 mm.(2)Its mean arc voltage is higher than 290 V when the LPT works with arc currents lower than 200 A.leading to an output power greater than 50 kW.(3)The mean thermal efficiency is higher than 509f.Lastly,the proposed LPT has been applied to spheroidize the aluminum oxide powers.The experiment results for the production of spherical powders show that the proposed LPT hits a good characteristic for material processing. 展开更多

In order to effectively imitate the dynamic operation characteristics of the HVDC (high voltage direct current) power transmission system at a real ±500kV HVDC transmission project, the electromechanical-electromagnetic transient hybrid simulation was carried out based on advanced digital power system simulator (ADPSS). In the simulation analysis, the built hybrid model's dynamic response outputs under three different fault conditions are considered, and by comparing with the selected fault recording waveforms, the validities of the simulation waveforms are estimated qualitatively. It can be ascertained that the hybrid simulation model has the ability to describe the HVDC system's dynamic change trends well under some special fault conditions. 展开更多

It's large transmission capacity and intensive placement are hardly seen in other countries. Accurate and reliable study tools and methods are extremely needed for power system engineers and researchers to deal with such problems which were never met before and otherwhere. A novel approach on electromagnetic modeling of alternating current / direct current(AC/DC) system is proposed and simulation is carried out to replay a real AC 3-phase to ground fault on a multi-infeed high voltage direct current(MIHVDC) system. AC system is specially simplified. Dynamic models and real parameters are adopted in main AC/DC equipments concerned and retained. Modeling and simulation are based on the power system computer aided design/electro-magnetic transient in direct current(PSCAD/EMTDC) system software package.Comparisons between simulation results and the records from the fault recorders are studied including both AC and DC quantities. 展开更多

A Control System Design to Establish Dose-Response Relationships in Wound Healing Therapy

Advanced biophysical wound healing therapies can apply mechanical, electrical, or light energy to re-stimulate healing processes in chronic wounds. Despite the growing evidence of the clinical efficacy of these therapies, the optimal treatment stimulation parameters remain unknown and there are no standard treatment protocols. We introduce a closed-loop control design as an experimental system to study the dose-response of wound healing therapy treatment within a prescribed multidimensional and multimodal stimulation parameter space. Systems engineering approaches are applied to the control problem for estimation of a transfer function and model equations derived for use in optimal model-based control. The experimental control system design consisted of simultaneous application of biophysical energies inputted into a wound system. A study design set up including the use of negative pressure wound therapy, electrical stimulation therapy, and photobiomodulation device systems was described. Treatment stimulation parameters were selected from experimental ranges used in the scientific literature. Classical control methods and model-based control were suggested for model selection and evaluation and design of the overall control system. An experimental design for multimodal biophysical wound healing therapy control system is introduced to establish the dose-response interactions for development of therapeutic applications and device design. 展开更多

Large time delay is one of the inherent features of a modular multilevel converter(MMC)-based high voltage direct current(HVDC)system and is the main factor leading to the unfavorable’negative resistance and inductance’characteristic of MMC impedance.Research indicates that this characteristic interacting with the capacitive characteristics of an AC system is the cause of high frequency resonance(HFR)in the Yu-E HVDC project.As the current controller is one of the main factors that affects the MMC impedance,a compensation control to imitate the paralleled impedance at the point of common coupling(PCC)is proposed.Therefore,the structure and parameter design of the compensation controller are core to realizing HFR suppression.There are two potentially risky frequency ranges of HFRs(around 700 Hz and 1.8 kHz)in the studied AC system within 2.0 kHz.The core concept of HFR suppression is to make the phase angle of MMC impedance smaller than 90◦in the two risky frequency ranges according to impedance stability theory.Hence,the design parameters aim to coordinate the phase angle of MMC impedance in the two risky frequency ranges.In this paper,three types of compensation controller are studied to suppress HFRs,namely,first-order low pass filter(LPF),second-order LPF,and third-order band pass filter.The results of parameter design show that the first-order LPF cannot suppress both HFRs simultaneously.The second-order LPF can suppress both HFRs,however,it introduces a DC component into the current control loop.Therefore,a high pass filter is added to form the recommended third-order controller.All parameter ranges of the compensation controller are derived using analytical expressions.Finally,the correctness of the parameter design is proofed using time-domain simulations. 展开更多

In the presence of an MMC-HVDC system,current differential protection(CDP)has the risk of failure in operation under an internal fault.In addition,CDP may also incur security issues in the presence of current transformer(CT)saturation and outliers.In this paper,a current trajectory image-based protection algorithm is proposed for AC lines connected to MMC-HVDC stations using a convolution neural network improved by a channel attention mechanism(CA-CNN).Taking the dual differential currents as two-dimensional coordinates of the moving point,the moving-point trajectories formed by differential currents have significant differences under internal and external faults.Therefore,internal faults can be identified using image recognition based on CA-CNN.This is improved by a channel attention mechanism,data augmentation,and adaptive learning rate.In comparison with other machine learning algorithms,the feature extraction ability and accuracy of CA-CNN are greatly improved.Various fault conditions like different net-work structures,operation modes,fault resistances,outliers,and current transformer saturation,are fully considered to verify the superiority of the proposed protection algorithm.The results confirm that the proposed current trajectory image-based protection algorithm has strong learning and generalizability,and can identify internal faults reliably. 展开更多

In the voltage source converter based high-voltage direct current(VSC-HVDC)grids,fast and reliable protections are the key technologies.The traditional protection schemes are easily affected by fault resistance,line distributed capacitance,etc.Meanwhile,the influence of fault current limiting strategy(FCLS)has not been fully considered.In this paper,the fault characteristics under FCLS and the feasibility of traditional travelling wave protections are analyzed.To improve the reliability and sensibility,a similarity comparison based pilot protection scheme is proposed,which focuses on the relationship between the fault characteristics and the state of the protected transmission line,with the establishment of a precise frequencydependent transmission line model.The criteria based on the similarity comparison calculated by cross-wavelet can identify the fault effectively.Meanwhile,the protection scheme can also endure the influence of error synchronization.Finally,the protection performance is verified in the PSCAD/EMTDC under different fault conditions. 展开更多

Due to the large number of submodules(SMs),and modular multilevel converters(MMCs)in high-voltage applications,they are usually regulated by the nearest level modulation(NLM).Moreover,the large number of SMs causes a challenge for the fault diagnosis strategy(FDS).This paper proposes a currentless FDS for MMC with NLM.In FDS,the voltage sensor is relocated to measure the output voltage of the SM.To acquire the capacitor voltage and avoid increasing extra sensors,a capacitor voltage calculation method is proposed.Based on the measurement of output voltages,the faults can be detected and the number of different-type switch open-circuit faults can be confirmed from the numerous SMs in an arm,which narrows the scope of fault localization.Then,the faulty SMs and faulty switches in these SMs are further located without arm current according to the sorting of capacitor voltages in the voltage balancing algorithm.The FDS is independent of the arm current,which can reduce the communication cost in the hierarchical control system of MMC.Furthermore,the proposed FDS not only simplifies the identification of switch open-circuit faults by confirming the scope of faults,but also detects and locates multiple different-type faults in an arm.The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is verified by the simulation results. 展开更多

The proliferation of ultra-high voltage direct current(UHVDC)transmission technology has heightened regulatory oversight of electromagnetic fields around buildings.In conventional direct current(DC)line design,the presence of residential areas was typically not taken into account.GB 39220-2020 now requires environmental assessments for residential balconies and platforms.The impact of nearby residential buildings has to be taken into account during the design of DC lines,necessitating the calculation of the three-dimensional total electric field.This study introduces a parallel charge simulation method-flux tracing method to quickly calculate the 3D total electric field near buildings in proximity to UHVDC lines,which is crucial for engineering design and environmental assessment.The method significantly speeds up calculations,with a 4-15 times faster ratio using 16-32 threads.It also analyses how UHVDC line dimensions,distances to buildings and parameters of residential buildings affect the maximum electric field on platforms.By using regression analysis,the formula for predicting the maximum electric field is obtained,and the traditional calculation time is improved.This advancement provides efficient predictions and detailed 3D electric field distributions for engineering and environmental assessments. 展开更多
