Agricultural Intangible Cultural Heritage(AICH)embodies collective, intergenerational knowledge sys⁃tems that are increasingly exposed to risks of misappropriation and inequitable commercialization under contemporary intellectual property(IP)regimes. This study investigates the"cost of inaction"in protecting AICH and geographical origins through a qualitative comparative case study approach, drawing on selected cases from Africa,Asia, and Latin America, alongside Chinese practices.By combining narrative analysis and thematic synthesis, the study identi⁃fies two dominant patterns:external misappropriation driven by institutional gaps-manifested in biopiracy, trademark squatting, and exploitation of information asymmetry-and internal inequities arising from commercialization processes that marginalize indigenous communities in benefit-sharing.The findings reveal that existing international IP frame⁃works, including TRIPs and the CBD,provide fragmented and insufficient protection for collective knowledge sys⁃tems.Comparative analysis of national responses highlights three distinct governance models:defensive protection(In⁃dia),rights-based sui generis legislation(Peru),and market-oriented geographical indication systems(European Union),each with inherent limitations. In contrast,Chinese practices demonstrate strong capacity in market integra⁃tion and industrial upgrading but remain constrained by weak recognition of community rights and limited institutional⁃ization of benefit-sharing mechanisms. This study contributes to the literature by proposing a composite institutional framework that integrates existing IP regimes with a sui generis system centered on collective rights recognition, prior informed consent, and mandatory benefit-sharing.The framework also emphasizes the need for embedded integration with patent, trademark, and geographical indication systems,as well as institutional adaptation in the context of the digital economy. The findings offer theoretical insights and policy implications for developing countries seeking to bal⁃ance cultural preservation, economic development, and equitable governance of traditional knowledge. 展开更多

In this paper, the Jiangxi section of the red army's long march is taken as the research object to construct a red cultural heritage corridor.Introducing the theory of heritage corridor,on the basis of its hierarchical decomposition and comparative judgment,a hierarchy model of the red cultural heritage corridor resource is established. The comprehensive scores of each factor are obtained through expert scoring, and the overall pattern of red army corridor is constructed as"ring-shape-point".New ideas for protection and utilization as well as protection implementation measures are proposed, and the spiritual and cultural connotations of long march in Jiangxi are fully explored. This could help the social and economic development of the areas along the long march of red army in Jiangxi, and promote the integrated utilization and coordinated development of resources in the red cultural heritage corridor region. 展开更多

Tree failure is an international problem,a major risk to public safety, and of growing concern because of extreme weather events.Tree biomechanics can inform the probability of tree failure, but empirical data from tropical settings are scarce. As a case study,we analyze the biomechanics(safety factor)of large heritage trees in public spaces in Indonesia. We examined critical buckling height using the Euler and Ylinen bending stress method.Tree morphometry(height, diameter at breast height, crown diameter),stability(modulus of elasticity),critical buckling height, and safety factor were quantified during this study. We found that large heritage trees in public spaces with buttresses have taller and larger morphometry and higher trunk and crown weights than small trees without buttresses. These trees are highly stable against external pressure. The presence of buttresses protects the target tree from rain and wind, resulting in a higher critical buckling height(H_(cr))of large(58.9 m)and buttressed target trees(58.8)than small(33.5 m)and unbuttressed trees(42.6 m),and a safety factor level of 68%safer.We make recommendations for selecting and managing trees in public spaces in a way that(i)can enhance wellbeing and biodiversity in urban planning, and(ii)is informed by risk to public safety. 展开更多

Rockfall hazards pose significant risks to both cultural heritage and populated areas, necessitating comprehensive assessment methodologies.Despite extensive research on rockfalls, only a small number of studies have directly compared empirical methods with modelling approaches. This study investigated rockfalls in five settlements within the Cappadocia region of Türkiye, employing both empirical methods and advanced three-dimensional(3D)probabilistic modeling. The energy line angle approach was applied to identify rockfall propagation zones, while high-resolution digital surface models derived from unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)imagery facilitated detailed 3D rockfall simulations.Cappadocia’s unique geological setting—comprising alternating layers of ignimbrites and weaker fluviolacustrine deposits—renders it highly susceptible to rockfalls intensified by wetting-drying and freeze-thaw cycles. Results indicate that rockfall propagation characteristics vary markedly between settlements:Göre and Tatlarin exhibit shorter runout distances due to basalt-dominated slopes, whereas Akköy,SoğanlıandŞahinefendi display longer trajectories associated with welded ignimbrites.Empirical cone propagation analyses correspond broadly with field observations, but variations in energy line angles(23°-33°)highlight the necessity for site-specific calibration.Comparative evaluations demonstrate that 3D probabilistic modeling better captures local-scale block dynamics and identifies high-risk areas affected by topographic and structural features such as rockfall ditches. These findings emphasize the importance of integrating empirical and 3D approaches to improve hazard zoning, optimize mitigation structures and guide the protection of Cappadocia’s unique cultural heritage landscape. 展开更多

The Nuo mask is the core visual vehicle within China’s Nuo culture and constitutes a complex symbolic system through facial features(icons),patterns(indexes),and colors(symbols).Within the context of intangible cultural heritage(ICH)preservation, its value lies in the continuation and revitalization of its dynamic symbolic functions.Grounded in semiotic theory, this paper elaborates on three core dimensions of symbolic value manifested by Nuo masks in ICH preservation:a ritual symbol for living transmission,a symbol of identity for collective memory, and an aesthetic symbol as a source of creativity. 展开更多

The heritage preservation is of great intractability to the conservators as each kind of heritage material has unique and diverse requirements on temperature, humidity and air cleanliness. It is promising for metal-organic frameworks(MOFs),the multifunctional environment remediation materials,to be applied in heritage environmental protection. The advantages of MOFs lie in their multifunction like adsorption, photocatalysis, sterilization,as well as the controllable structure and properties that could be flexibly adjusted as demands, helping the heritage against various environmental threats.Thereby, the applications and the corresponding mechanisms of MOFs in cultural heritage preservation were reviewed in this work, including harmful gas adsorption, surface waterproofing, particulate matters(PM)removal,anti-bacterial and humidity control of environment. Finally, the selection principles and precautions of MOFs in heritage preservation were discussed, aiming to provide a forward-looking direction for the selection and application of MOFs. 展开更多

Chaoshan drawnwork handkerchief design exhibits self-similarity and fractal characteristics due to their grid-based structure, overall symmetry, and the way local motifs reflect the whole pattern. To explore the potential of fractals in traditional textile design,a fractal-based generative framework was proposed for efficiently creating drawnwork patterns suitable for practical handicraft production. The research was initiated with an analysis of the structural composition of center, skeleton, and filler motifs extracted from a pattern sample library.Based on this hierarchical classification, the box-counting method was employed to calculate their respective fractal dimensions.Building on fractal art theory, generative algorithms, and studies on the application of Ultra Fractal,a Chaoshan drawnwork fractal design model was established.Using this model,51 drawnwork fractal patterns and 153 handkerchief patterns were generated. These patterns were subsequently applied in real-world production to validate the feasibility and value of fractal techniques in textile design. 展开更多
