Ultra-compact wavelength multiplexer/demultiplexer based on subwavelength grating-assisted multimode interference coupler by inverse design

We proposed and demonstrated the ultra-compact 1310/1550 nm wavelength multiplexer/demultiplexer assisted by subwavelength grating(SWG)using particle swarm optimization(PSO)algorithm in silicon-on-insulator(SOI)platform.Through the self-imaging effect of multimode interference(MMI)coupler,the demultiplexing function for 1310 nm and 1550 nm wavelengths is implemented.After that,three parallel SWG-based slots are inserted into the MMI section so that the effective refractive index of the modes can be engineered and thus the beat length can be adjusted.Importantly,these three SWG slots significantly reduce the length of the device,which is much shorter than the length of traditional MMI-based wavelength demultiplexers.Ultimately,by using the PSO algorithm,the equivalent refractive index and width of the SWG in a certain range are optimized to achieve the best performance of the wavelength demultiplexer.It has been verified that the device footprint is only 2×30.68μm^(2),and 1 dB bandwidths of larger than 120 nm are acquired at 1310 nm and 1550 nm wavelengths.Meanwhile,the transmitted spectrum shows that the insertion loss(IL)values are below 0.47 dB at both wavelengths when the extinction ratio(ER)values are above 12.65 dB.This inverse design approach has been proved to be efficient in increasing bandwidth and reducing device length. 展开更多

Irradiation effect on strain sensitivity coefficient of strain sensing fiber Bragg gratings 被引量:3

The effect of irradiation on the strain sensitivity coefficient of strain sensing fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) has been investigated through experiments. FBGs were fabricated in single mode fibers with 3 tool% Ge-concentration in the core and with a H2-1oading treatment. In experiments, the FBGs were subjected to y-radiation exposures using a Co6~ source at a dose-rate of 25 Gy/min up to a total dose of 10.5 kGy. The GeO defect in fiber absorbs photons to form a GeE' defect; the interaction with H2 is a probable reason for the y-radiation sensitivity of gratings written in hydrogen loaded fibres, The effect mechanism of radiation on the strain sensitivity coefficient is similar to that of radiation on the temperature sensitivity coefficient. Radiation affects the effective index neff, which results in the change of the thermo-optic coefficient and the strain-optic coefficient. Irradiation can change the strain sensitivity coefficient of FBGs by 1.48%-2.71%, as well as changing the Bragg wavelength shift (BWS) by 22 pm-25 pm under a total dose of 10.5 kGy. Our research demonstrates that the effect of irradiation on the strain sensitivity coefficient of FBG is small and that strain sensing FBGs can work well in the radiation environment. 展开更多

A novel optimal design of sub-wavelength metal rectangular gratings for the polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is proposed. The method is based on effective medium theory and the method of designing single layer antireflection coating. The polarization performance of PBS is discussed by rigorous couple-wave analysis (RCWA) method at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The result shows that sub-wavelength metal rectangular grating is characterized by a high reflectivity, like metal films for TE polarization, and high transmissivity, like dielectric films for TM polarization. The optimal design accords well with the results simulated by RCWA method. 展开更多

Digital structured light (SL) profilometry is increasingly used in three-dimensional (3D) measurement technology. However, the nonlinearity of the off-the-shelf projectors and cameras seriously reduces the measurement accuracy. In this paper, first, we review the nonlinear effects of the projector-camera system in the phase-shifting structured light depth measurement method. We show that high order harmonic wave components lead to phase error in the phase-shifting method. Then a practical method based on frequency domain filtering is proposed for nonlinear error reduction. By using this method, the nonlinear calibration of the SL system is not required. Moreover, both the nonlinear effects of the projector and the camera can be effectively reduced. The simulations and experiments have verified our nonlinear correction method. 展开更多

In the measurement, two properchosen frequency gratings are utilized to synthesize an equivalent wavelength grating which ensures the computed phase in a principal phase range. Thus, the error caused by the phase unwrapping process with the conventional phase reconstruct algorithm can be eliminated. A tunable frequency-multiplying optoelectronic oscillator(OEO) based on a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator(DPMZM) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed system, the tunable fundamental microware signal is generated by a tunable optoelectronic oscillator incorporating a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating(PS-FBG). By adjusting the DC bias of the DPMZM, the frequency-doubled microwave signal with a tunable frequency range from 11 GHz to 20 GHz and the frequency-quadrupled microwave signal with a tunable frequency range from 22.5 GHz to 26 GHz are generated. The phase noises of the fundamental, frequency-doubled and frequency-quadrupled signals at 10 k Hz offset frequency are-105.9 d Bc/Hz,-103.3 d Bc/Hz and-86.2 d Bc/Hz, respectively. 展开更多

This paper focuses on the investigation of modal characteristics and sensing properties of long period grating photonic crystal fibers (LPG-PCFs). An improved effective index method is employed with an objective to study its limitations for various designs of LPG-PCFs. Results so obtained with the above method are compared with the corresponding values of multiple multipole (MMP) method results which points the range of validity and applicability of the improved effective index method to LPG-PCFs. It is shown that this method is excellent when the surrounding media is assumed to be air. However, it becomes less accurate when the fiber is immersed into a liquid with a refractive index close to that of the cladding. 展开更多

We report the experimental observation of two-dimensional Talbot effect when a resonance plane wave interacts with a two-dimensional atomic density grating generated by standing wave manipulation of ultracold Bose gases. Clear self-images of the grating and sub-images with reversed phase or fractal patterns are observed. By calculating the autocorrelation functions of the images, the behavior of periodic Talbot images is studied. The Talbot effect with two-dimensional atomic density grating expands the applications of the Talbot effect in a wide variety of research fields. 展开更多

We theoretically investigate the phenomena of electromagnetically induced grating in an M-type five-level atomic system. It is found that a weak field can be effectively diffracted into high-order directions using a standing wave coupling field, and different depths of the phase modulation can disperse the diffraction light into different orders. When the phase modulation depth is approximated to the orders of π, 2π and 3π, the first-, second- and third-order diffraction intensity reach the maximum, respectively. Thus we can take advantage of the phase modulation to control the probe light dispersing into the required high orders. 展开更多

为了解决实际工程中预应力混凝土结构体内有效预应力无法监测的问题,根据光纤布拉格光栅传感器在结构健康监测中具有精度高、实时性强等优点,探讨内嵌式光纤布拉格光栅传感器智能钢绞线有效预应力监测技术的工程应用;通过对该智能钢绞... 为了解决实际工程中预应力混凝土结构体内有效预应力无法监测的问题,根据光纤布拉格光栅传感器在结构健康监测中具有精度高、实时性强等优点,探讨内嵌式光纤布拉格光栅传感器智能钢绞线有效预应力监测技术的工程应用;通过对该智能钢绞线开展拉伸试验,检验智能钢绞线的拉伸强度、线性度等参数;以云南省某高速公路预应力混凝土T梁桥示范工程为例,同时监测预应力混凝土T梁桥正、负弯矩区智能钢绞线张拉过程中智能钢绞线内的有效预应力,得到正弯矩区混凝土弹性压缩、智能钢绞线与孔道间摩擦、锚具变形和智能钢绞线内缩造成的预应力损失,并与千斤顶张拉应力及预应力损失的规范理论计算值对比。结果表明:该智能钢绞线力学性能和线性度良好,并且应变灵敏度系数即每微应变波长的变化值为1.22~1.26 pm,与应变灵敏度系数的理论值1.21 pm相差较小;相对于千斤顶张拉应力及有效预应力的规范理论计算值,预应力混凝土T梁桥正、负弯矩区智能钢绞线张拉过程中各测点处光纤布拉格光栅传感器监测应力的最大误差不超过3.86%,并且与预应力损失的规范理论计算值相比,该智能钢绞线在各测点处的预应力损失监测值误差较小;该智能钢绞线表现出良好的可靠性和稳定性,能满足实际工程需求。 展开更多

超窄线宽π相移光纤布拉格光栅在光纤传感领域发挥着重要的作用,但是这种超窄线宽π相移光纤布拉格光栅对输入光强度非常敏感,输入光在光栅内部产生光热效应会引起频率移动,降低了光栅的测量精度,同时激光器自身的频率漂移也会增大测量... 超窄线宽π相移光纤布拉格光栅在光纤传感领域发挥着重要的作用,但是这种超窄线宽π相移光纤布拉格光栅对输入光强度非常敏感,输入光在光栅内部产生光热效应会引起频率移动,降低了光栅的测量精度,同时激光器自身的频率漂移也会增大测量误差.本文提出使用超窄线宽π相移光纤布拉格光栅进行高精度应变测量的方法,采用单光子调制技术锁定激光频率到38 MHz超窄线宽π相移光纤布拉格光栅,同时消除了光栅内部光热效应和激光频率起伏对应变测量的影响,对于0—30με范围的外部应变实现了测量精度为0.05με的高精度测量,该方法在航空航天、土木工程、能源工程等领域具有重要应用价值. 展开更多

基于共振域光栅的反常偏振效应,设计了一种以熔石英(SiO_(2))为衬底,铝(Al)金属作为栅线材料的金属光栅。该光栅具备透射TE偏振光和反射TM偏振光的反常偏振特性,光栅周期为261 nm,该数值接近目标入射波长266 nm。当光源垂直入射到该光栅... 基于共振域光栅的反常偏振效应,设计了一种以熔石英(SiO_(2))为衬底,铝(Al)金属作为栅线材料的金属光栅。该光栅具备透射TE偏振光和反射TM偏振光的反常偏振特性,光栅周期为261 nm,该数值接近目标入射波长266 nm。当光源垂直入射到该光栅时,TE偏振光的透射率可达82%,消光比可达220。为了进一步提高光栅的消光比,在SiO_(2)衬底上添加一层介质,选用Al_(2)O_(3)和Si_(3)N_(4)作为介质层材料,通过模拟结果分析,当Al_(2)O_(3)作为介质层材料时,光栅的消光比达到240;当Si_(3)N_(4)作为介质层材料时,光栅的消光比则提高至396。同时,TE偏振光的透射率均超过60%。该反常偏振光栅在光刻机偏振系统、光滤波等领域具有广泛的应用潜力。 展开更多

The multiplexing ability of a novel multiplexing fiber Bragg grating (FBG) method based on Optical Time Domain Reflecto meter (OTDR) and Time Division Multiplexing TDM technologies has been theoretically analyzed and studied. This method permits the interrogation of hundreds of identical FBGs with low reflectivity in a single fiber, making the FBG sensors more applicable in the aerospace health monitoring engineering. The analysis shows that the multiplexing ability can be greatly improved if the FBG reflectivity is sufficiently low. And hence, an inexpensive large-scale distributed sensing system based on this method can be realized, When evaluating the multiplexing ability of this system, we propose for the first time that the interference effect of multi-reflections among FBGs should be taken into consideration. 展开更多
