In India, floods remain a natural recurrent event of many major rivers of the sub-continent. Most frequently, it occurs during the "monsoon season" when precipitation remains very heavy and the natural watercourses fail to accommodate excess water. The river Kosi, located in Bihar, India too bears a long history of annual floods and is often labeled as a "Sorrow of Bihar" due to its strange behavioural attributes and the extensive damage it causes as a result of severe flood inundation. The river Kosi is one of the megafans of the Gangetic plains. Geologic evidence demonstrates that the megafans are prone to devastating flood hazards. On August 18, 2008, the river Kosi burst through its banks to flow into a channel it had abandoned more than 200 years ago, drowning towns, numerous villages and rendering over a million homeless and many were reported to have died. The research is an attempt to reflect on the geographies of socio-economic impact of the Kosi flood, 2008. For this, the research uses a holistic approach. The findings suggest that the rescue and rehabilitation operation continue in the post flood region. However, operations were significantly delayed as the result of inept bureaucratic process and insufficient funding. The final sections draw together, the threads of analysis and suggest suitable measures, so that the floods of such magnitude can be managed better in near future. 展开更多

This review explores the recent development of research on rainbow herbicides as chemical weapons and the geographies of chemical warfare in what is now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. While the use and impacts of Agent Orange have previously been well documented, the production and extensive application of five other rainbow agents by the United States military has only recently been investigated in detail. What is exceptional about this research of chemical warfare landscapes is that the 23 refereed journal publications in this review were designed, implemented, and published in a unique collective research project by Ken Olson and a Merry Band of Military Retirees. Their groundbreaking research portfolio includes many geographical dimensions and the political ecology of chemical warfare. This includes the extensive exposure of civilians in Vietnam to these chemical agents, exposure of US military personnel in Southeast Asia and Panama, exposure of civilians near the private industrial sites that produced these rainbow agents in North America and the hazardous soil contamination that perseveres at these sites in Vietnam and the US. Given this impressive research depth and global scope, this review explores the unique way this research portfolio was developed by a Merry Band of Retirees through an interview with its leader, Ken Olson. It examines the goals and ethical orientation of these military veterans, the political ecology involved, the creative strategies they utilized to produce this innovative research, and how they changed the way Veterans exposed to chemical warfare agents are treated by the US government. 展开更多

This study provides an analysis of the implementation of FAIR Guidelines in selected non-Western geographies. The analysis was based on a systematic literature review to determine if the findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability of data is seen as an issue, if the adoption of the FAIR Guidelines is seen as a solution, and if the climate is conducive to the implementation of the FAIR Guidelines. The results show that the FAIR Guidelines have been discussed in most of the countries studied, which have identified data sharing and the reusability of research data as an issue(e.g., Kazakhstan, Russia, countries in the Middle East), and partially introduced in others(e.g., Indonesia). In Indonesia, a FAIR equivalent system has been introduced, although certain functions need to be added for data to be entirely FAIR. In Japan, both FAIR equivalent systems and FAIR-based systems have been adopted and created, and the acceptance of FAIRbased systems is recommended by the Government of Japan. In a number of African countries, the FAIR Guidelines are in the process of being implemented and the implementation of FAIR is well supported. In conclusion, a window of opportunity for implementing the FAIR Guidelines is open in most of the countries studied, however, more awareness needs to be raised about the benefits of FAIR in Russia and Kazakhstan to place it firmly on the policy agenda. 展开更多

In an academic environment increasingly shaped by metrics and the imperatives of“publish or perish”,it is rare to encounter a leading scientist willing to interweave personal narrative with conceptual reflection. The Soul of Geography by Fu(2025)achieves precisely this. The book resists simple categorisation:it is neither a conventional monograph nor a memoir, but rather a hybrid text that integrates autobiography, disciplinary reflection, and scientific arguments. In doing so,Fu articulates not only the trajectory of his own career but also a vision of geography as a discipline of theoretical depth and practical relevance. 展开更多

With the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence(AI)technologies, its applications have become increasingly widespread across various aspects of geography, offering unprecedented analytical capabilities across disciplinary boundaries.Despite this revolutionary potential,a comprehensive understanding of the current research landscape and development trajectory of AI in geographical sciences remains limited. To fill this gap,we conducted a large-scale systematic review based on 400,000 geographical publications published from 1990 to 2023.We utilized large language model(LLM)prompt engineering, topic modeling and other natural language processing techniques to analyze the publications. Our findings reveal that AI applications constitute 8.1% of geographical research, with publication volume having increased 20-fold over three decades. Both China and the United States have been the leading contributors to AI-driven geographical studies, together accounting for 62.78% of all publications in this field.Notably, more than half of the studies used traditional machine learning methods.Among the various geographical topics, remote sensing applications and spatial data analysis emerged as the most extensively explored areas using AI techniques, with image feature extraction being the topic with the deepest level of adoption and most significant ongoing impact of AI methods. This systematic review provides critical insights into the integration trajectory of AI within geographical sciences, establishing a foundation for identifying emerging research opportunities and enhancing our understanding of AI’s transformative role in advancing geographical knowledge. 展开更多

The growing demand for land to accommodate renewable energy infrastructure has intensified competition with biodiversity conservation, agriculture, and ecosystem services. In Portugal, electricity system decarbonisation relies heavily on utility-scale solar energy(USSE) facilities, yet the spatial extent of land transformation associated with photovoltaic development has not been systematically assessed. This study provides an assessment of the land occupancy of USSE facilities and associated land use and land cover(LULC) changes in continental Portugal over the past two decades, as well as their spatial relationship with areas designated for land and nature conservation. A geospatial database of USSE installations(≥1 MW) was developed through the integration of multiple data sources using geographic information systems(GIS). The geometric consistency of spatial features was ensured through harmonisation and validation procedures involving GIS-based corrections supported by Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. Spatial overlay analyses were conducted with multitemporal LULC datasets and with land-use planning constraints, including areas classified for nature conservation, ecological reserves, and agricultural reserves. The results indicate that USSE deployment has been predominantly located in the southern regions of Portugal, although the location of planned projects indicates a northward shift. The implementation of USSE facilities has been mainly associated with LULC changes in forest land, agricultural areas, pastures and shrubland. Spatial overlaps were observed with areas classified within the national ecological and agricultural reserves. These patterns may be indicative of growing land-use conflicts, but the extent to which these developments align with land-use planning objectives and conservation priorities requires further examination. 展开更多

Based on the frequency of themes covered at the 35th International Geographical Congress(IGC)and the 2024 American Association of Geographers Annual Meeting(AAG-AM),we present an integrated analysis of current research hotspots in geography. The interdisciplinary approach of geography in tackling global challenges, including climate change, urbanization, and sustainable development is highlighted.Hotspot analysis of the 35th IGC reveals the prominence of“Tourism,Leisure, and Global Change,”and“Urban Geography”as key themes, whereas the 2024 AAG-AM placed more emphasis on“GeoAI and Deep Learning,”and“Geospatial Data Science for Sustainability.”Frontier analysis, based on emerging research beyond the two conferences, highlights major critical issues being confronted by geographers, notably Earth’s surface systems, spatial patterns of human activities, intelligent remote sensing, climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, hazards and disaster risk, planetary boundaries, coupled human and natural systems, and global and regional sustainability. The analysis demonstrates that geographical research is becoming more diverse and systematic, and artificial intelligence technology is increasingly being harnessed. This not only reflects specific regional interests and priorities but also shows the dynamic development of geographical research and its important role in dealing with the challenges of the 21st century. 展开更多

Geography is shifting from static description to a feedback-driven,adaptive discipline integrating sensing, prediction, comparison, and continuous self-improvement.This transformation underlies Intelligent Geography(IG),where artificial intelligence(AI),big data analytics, and high-performance computing(HPC)converge to enhance spatial understanding and guide intelligent decisions in complex systems. The discipline's historical stages—descriptive, experimental, theoretical, quantitative,GIScience, and information geography—form the foundation for an overarching adaptive framework. In this framework, diverse geospatial data streams seamlessly feed real-time models whose predicted outputs are compared with observed conditions to iteratively refine predictions.A hallmark of IG is embedding domain theory into AI workflows, producing predictive models that selfadjust to new data or control system behavior.Applications such as smart traffic management,climate-responsive urban planning, and disaster-resilient digital twins illustrate the sensing–prediction–adaptation/learning cycle in practice for complex changing systems. We examine the enabling roles of HPC,deep learning, and geographic large models in implementing feedback loops, and address persistent challenges in data integration, interpretability, and governance. We conclude with a vision of IG as an evolving socio-technical ecosystem that through adaptation and self-learning turns spatial data into adaptive, actionable knowledge that assists in intelligent decision-making,whether it is for AI systems or human ones. 展开更多

Amid ongoing global environmental change and the critical pursuit of sustainable development,human-environment systems are exhibiting increasingly complex dynamic evolutions and spatial relationships, underscoring an urgent need for innovative research frameworks.Integrated geography synthesizes physical geography, human geography, and geographic information science, providing key frameworks for understanding complex human-environment systems. This editorial proposes an emerging research framework for integrated geography—“Composite driving-System evolution-Coupling mechanism-Synergistic regulation(CSCS)”—based on key issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, resource scarcity, and social-ecological interactions, which have been highlighted in both recent critical literature on human-environment systems and UN assessment reports. The framework starts with diverse composite driving forces, extends to the evolution of human-environment system structures, processes, and functions that these drivers induce, explores couplings within human-environment systems, and calls for regulation aimed at sustainable development in synergies.Major research frontiers include understanding the cascading“evolution-coupling”effects of shocks;measuring system resilience, thresholds, and safe and just operating space boundaries;clarifying linkage mechanisms across scales;and achieving synergistic outcomes for multi-objective sustainability. This framework will help promote the interdisciplinary integration and development of integrated geography, and provide geographical solutions for the global sustainable development agenda. 展开更多

A case-control study on the differences in colonic mucosa-associated microbiotas between patients with and without colorectal cancer(CRC)in the Indonesian population was recently published. The geographical distribution characteristics of the gut microbiota in the carcinogenic microenvironment are closely related to disease progression. Therefore, the results of that study are of great significance for determining the pathogenesis of CRC in the Indonesian region and for clinically diagnosing and treating CRC.While acknowledging the strengths of the study, its limitations should also be addressed.Future case-control studies of the gut microbiota based on specific populations should be further refined to provide more optimized guidance for clinical precision treatment. 展开更多

Although geography's role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)is widely recognised,a comprehensive quantitative synthesis of its intellectual contributions has been absent. This study fills that critical research gap through a large-scale bibliometric analysis.Drawing from 122 core geography journals(Web of Science,2010–2024),we employed three-level search criteria(SDGs,sustainability and SDG indicators)to identify a final corpus of 70,122 relevant articles. We then combined publication trend analysis,co-citation and collaboration networks, and keyword co-occurrence mapping to systematically delineate research foci, contributions, and future directions. Our findings reveal six major thematic research clusters:(1)climate change impacts and governance;(2)agricultural landscape and environmental sustainability;(3)resilience and adaptive capability in social-ecological systems;(4)land use change and metacoupling impacts;(5)urban growth and transport accessibility;and(6)biodiversity and ecosystem services. The SDG overlap analysis highlights strong linkages among environmental SDGs,while revealing that SDG 1(No Poverty)and SDG 10(Reduced Inequalities)are more isolated.Overall, geography supports the SDGs across four key dimensions:(1)providing spatial data analysis for assessment;(2)conducting regional studies for localisation;(3)applying human-environment interaction research to advance synergies;and(4)strengthening science-policy interface efforts for achievement. To maximise its future impact, this study calls for the geography community to develop a dedicated methodological framework for SDG analysis, proactively contribute to shaping the post-2030 agenda, advance holistic integrated approaches, and prudently harness the power of artificial intelligence to accelerate sustainability transitions. 展开更多
