A virtual sieving experimental simulation system was built using physical simulation principles.The effects of vibration frequency and amplitude,the inclination angle of the screen-deck and the vibration direction angle of screen on single particle kinematics were predicted.Properties such as the average velocity and the average throw height were studied.The results show that the amplitude and the angle of vibration have a great effect on particle average velocity and average height.The vibration frequency and the screen-deck inclination angle appear to have little influence on these responses.For materials that are difficult to screen the vibration frequency and amplitude,the screen-deck inclination angle and the vibration angle should be set to 14 Hz,6.6 mm,6° and 40°,respectively,to obtain optimal particle kinematics.A screening process can be simulated reliably by means of a virtual experiment and these results provide references for both screening theory research and sieving practice. 展开更多

Animal behavior researchers often face problems regarding standardization and reproducibility oftheir experiments. This has led to the partial substitution of live animals with artificial virtual stim-uli. In addition to standardization and reproducibility, virtual stimuli open new options for re-searchers since they are easily changeable in morphology and appearance, and their behavior canbe defined. In this article, a novel toolchain to conduct behavior experiments with fish is presentedby a case study in sailfin mollies Poecilia latipinna. As the toolchain holds many different and novelfeatures, it offers new possibilities for studies in behavioral animal research and promotes thestandardization of experiments. The presented method includes options to design, animate, andpresent virtual stimuli to live fish. The designing tool offers an easy and user-friendly way to definesize, coloration, and morphology of stimuli and moreover it is able to configure virtual stimuli ran-domly without any user influence. Furthermore, the toolchain brings a novel method to animatestimuli in a semiautomatic way with the help of a game controller. These created swimming pathscan be applied to different stimuli in real time. A presentation tool combines models and swim-ming paths regarding formerly defined playlists, and presents the stimuli onto 2 screens.Experiments with live sailfin mollies validated the usage of the created virtual 3D fish models inmate-choice experiments. 展开更多

The use of computer animation in behavioral research is a state-of-the-art method for designing andpresenting animated animals to live test animals. The major advantages of computer animations are:(1) the creation of animated animal stimuli with high variability of morphology and even behavior; (2)animated stimuli provide highly standardized, controlled and repeatable testing procedures; and (3)they allow a reduction in the number of live test animals regarding the 3Rs principle. But the use of ani-mated animals should be attended by a thorough validation for each test species to verify that behaviormeasured with live animals toward virtual animals can also be expected with natural stimuli. Here wepresent results on the validation of a custom-made simulation for animated 3D sailfin mollies Poecilialatipinna and show that responses of live test females were as strong to an animated fish as to a videoor a live male fish. Movement of an animated stimulus was important but female response was stron-ger toward a swimming 3D fish stimulus than to a "swimming" box. Moreover, male test fish wereable to discriminate between animated male and female stimuli; hence, rendering the animated 3D fisha useful tool in mate-choice experiments with sailfin mollies. 展开更多

In order to improve structure performance of the dish solar concentrator,a three-dimensional model of dish solar concentrator was established based on the high-precision numerical algorithms.And a virtual wind tunnel experiment with constant wind is adopted to investigate the pressure distribution of the reflective surface,velocity distribution of the fluid domain for the dish solar concentrator in different poses and wind speeds distribution.Some results about wind pressure distribution before and after dish solar concentrator surface and wind load velocity distribution in the entire fluid domain had been obtained.In particular,it is necessary to point out that the stiffness at the center of the dish solar concentrator should be relatively raised.The results can provide a theoretical basis for the improvement of solar concentrator dish structure as well as the failure analysis of dish solar concentrator in engineering practice. 展开更多

Background Mixed-reality technologies,including virtual reality(VR)and augmented reality(AR),are considered to be promising potential tools for science teaching and learning processes that could foster positive emotions,motivate autonomous learning,and improve learning outcomes.Methods In this study,a technology-aided biological microscope learning system based on VR/AR is presented.The structure of the microscope is described in a detailed three-dimensional(3D)model,each component being represented with their topological interrelationships and associations among them being established.The interactive behavior of the model was specified,and a standard operating guide was compiled.The motion control of components was simulated based on collision detection.Combined with immersive VR equipment and AR technology,we developed a virtual microscope subsystem and a mobile virtual microscope guidance system.Results The system consisted of a VR subsystem and an AR subsystem.The focus of the VR subsystem was to simulate operating the microscope and associated interactive behaviors that allowed users to observe and operate the components of the 3D microscope model by means of natural interactions in an immersive scenario.The AR subsystem allowed participants to use a mobile terminal that took a picture of a microscope from a textbook and then displayed the structure and functions of the instrument,as well as the relevant operating guidance.This flexibly allowed students to use the system before or after class without time and space constraints.The system allowed users to switch between the VR and AR subsystems.Conclusions The system is useful for helping learners(especially K-12 students)to recognize a microscope's structure and grasp the required operational skills by simulating operations using an interactive process.In the future,such technology-assisted education would be a successful learning platform in an open learning space. 展开更多

Effect of prior gaming experience on cybersickness symptoms in a virtual reality environment

Background This study aimed to explore the influence of prior gaming experience on the intensity and onset of cybersickness symptoms by comparing the effects of virtual reality(VR)immersion in gamers and nongamers.Methods This study involved 50 male participants,with equal numbers of gamers and nongamers,who were subject to a VR environment using head-mounted displays in a sitting position for a 15-minute session.The intensity of cybersickness symptoms,such as nausea,oculomotor disturbances,and disorientation,was measured using a simulator sickness questionnaire,and the onset of cybersickness was measured using the fast motion sickness scale.Physiological indices were measured based on heart rate variability(HRV)parameters.Results This study found that prior gaming experience significantly affected symptoms of cybersickness during VR immersion.Nongamers experienced more severe symptoms,including higher levels of nausea,disorientation,and oculomotor disturbances,with symptoms appearing earlier than those in gamers.These differences were linked to increased fluctuations in HRV and reduced parasympathetic activity in nongamers,indicating higher autonomic nervous system strain.By contrast,gamers showed more stable HRV responses,suggesting better physiological adaptability to VR environments.Conclusion These findings indicate that familiarity of gamers with dynamic visual and sensory inputs may help them manage VR-induced sensory conflicts more effectively. 展开更多

Artificial intelligence(AI)technology is increasingly used in the field of education,but its application in molecular biology experimental teaching still faces challenges.In order to explore the application prospects of AI technology in molecular biology experimental teaching,this paper discusses the application of AI technology in molecular biology experimental teaching,focusing on the construction and application of virtual laboratories.At the same time,the advantages,challenges and future development directions of AI technology application are analyzed.The study found that AI technology has broad application prospects in molecular biology experimental teaching.AI technology can overcome many limitations in traditional experimental teaching,and can also provide personalized learning experience,real-time feedback and evaluation,and simulate complex molecular processes.However,the application of AI technology also faces challenges such as technology cost,teacher training,and curriculum design.In summary,the application of AI technology in molecular biology experimental teaching has significant advantages and can effectively improve teaching quality and learning effects.In the future,we should strengthen the integration of AI technology and traditional teaching methods,develop more AI teaching tools suitable for the characteristics of molecular biology,and focus on cultivating students’practical ability and innovative thinking.This study provides new ideas and directions for promoting the reform and innovation of molecular biology experimental teaching. 展开更多

Background Machine learning-based beer bottle-defect detection is a complex technology that runs automatically;however,it consumes considerable memory,is expensive,and poses a certain danger when training novice operators.Moreover,some topics are difficult to learn from experimental lectures,such as digital image processing and computer vision.However,virtual simulation experiments have been widely used to good effect within education.A virtual simulation of the design and manufacture of a beer bottle-defect detection system will not only help the students to increase their image-processing knowledge,but also improve their ability to solve complex engineering problems and design complex systems.Methods The hardware models for the experiment(camera,light source,conveyor belt,power supply,manipulator,and computer)were built using the 3DS MAX modeling and animation software.The Unreal Engine 4(UE4)game engine was utilized to build a virtual design room,design the interactive operations,and simulate the system operation.Results The results showed that the virtual-simulation system received much better experimental feedback,which facilitated the design and manufacture of a beer bottle-defect detection system.The specialized functions of the functional modules in the detection system,including a basic experimental operation menu,power switch,image shooting,image processing,and manipulator grasping,allowed students(or virtual designers)to easily build a detection system by retrieving basic models from the model library,and creating the beer-bottle transportation,image shooting,image processing,defect detection,and defective-product removal.The virtual simulation experiment was completed with image processing as the main body.Conclusions By mainly focusing on bottle mouth defect detection,the detection system dedicates more attention to the user and the task.With more detailed tasks available,the virtual system will eventually yield much better results as a training tool for image processing education.In addition,a novel visual perception-thinking pedagogical framework enables better comprehension than the traditional lecture-tutorial style. 展开更多

The design of the simulation engine for "Digital Logic" course is described in detail. The system has been implemented in the experiment teaching of Digital Logic. Background With the aim of addressing the difficulty in identifying temperatures in virtual chemistry experiments,we propose a temperature-sensing simulation method of virtual chemistry experiments.Methods We construct a virtual chemistry experiment temperature simulation platform,based on which a wearable temperature generation device is developed.The typical middle school virtual experiments of concentrated sulfuric acid dilution and ammonium nitrate dissolution are conducted to verify the actual effect of the device.Results The platform is capable to indicate near real-world experimental situations.The performance of the device not only meets the temperature sensing characteristics of human skin,but also matches the temperature change of virtual chemistry experiments in real-time.Conclusions It is demonstrated that this temperature-sensing simulation method can represent exothermic or endothermic chemistry experiments,which is beneficial for students to gain understanding of the principles of thermal energy transformation in chemical reactions,thus avoiding the danger that may be posed in the course of traditional teaching of chemistry experiments effectively.Although this method does not have a convenient enough operation for users,the immersion of virtual chemical experiments can be enhanced. 展开更多

Existing vehicle experiment systems tend to focus on the research of vehicle dynamics by conducting performance tests on every system or some parts of the vehicle so as to improve the entire performance of the vehicle... Existing vehicle experiment systems tend to focus on the research of vehicle dynamics by conducting performance tests on every system or some parts of the vehicle so as to improve the entire performance of the vehicle. Virtual technology is widely utilized in various vehicle test-beds. These test-beds are mainly used to simulate the driving training, conduct the research on drivers' behaviors, or give virtual demonstrations of the transportation environment. However, the study on the active safety of the running vehicle in the virtual environment is still insufficient. A virtual scene including roads and vehicles is developed by using the software Creator and Vega, and radars and cameras are also simulated in the scene. Based on dSPACE's rapid prototyping simulation and its single board DS1103, a simulation model including vehicle control signals is set up in MATLAB/Simulink, the model is then built into C code, and the system defined file(SDF) is downloaded to the DS1103 board through the experiment debug software ControlDesk and is kept running. Programming is made by mixing Visual C++ 6.0, MATLAB API and Vega API. Control signals are read out by invoking library function MLIB/MTRACE of dSPACE. All the input, output, and system state values are acquired by arithmetic and are dynamically associated with the running status of the virtual vehicle. An intelligent vehicle experiment system is thus developed by virtue of program and integration. The system has not only the demonstration function, such as general driving, cruise control, active avoiding collision, but also the function of virtual experiment. Parameters of the system can be set according to needs, and the virtual test results can be analyzed and studied and used for the comparison with the existing models. The system reflects the running of the intelligent vehicle in the virtual traffic environment, at the same time, the system is a new attempt performed on the intelligent vehicle travel research and provides also a new research method for the development of intelligent vehicles. 展开更多

Aiming at the safety problems of toxic,flammable and explosive chemicals used in middle school chemical experiments,such as human poi-soning,skin corrosion,fire or explosion caused by improper experimental operation,a virtual simulation method of chemical experiments based on unity is proposed.Due to the need to analyze and compare the data in chemical experiments,summarize the experimental characteristics and data relevance.Therefore,based on the Apriori algorithm,this method deeply excavates the data obtained in the chemical experiment,uses Maya to model the experimental environment,uses unity to design the interactive functions in the experimental process,and uses visual effect graph technology,shader graph technology and other methods to realize the special effect simula-tion of various chemical experiments.With this method,the virtual simula-tion prototype system of middle school chemistry experiment is developed.The example shows that this method can vividly and realistically reproduce the simulation effect of chemical experiment,find the correlation between the experimental data,classification,properties and the overall characteristics of the data,describe and predict the development trend of the data,so as to make better use of these data to provide support for chemical experiment,and not only solve the problems of poisoning,corrosion of skin and It also solves the problems that it is difficult to scientifically compare data and find data relevance in traditional chemical experiments. 展开更多

Museums offer a lifelong edutainment environment with flexible choices for the public and provide fruitful interdisciplinary learning resources to support competency-based education.However,the lack of proper scaffolding and supports in museums negatively affect learner learning.Further,the individual differences need to be considered to effectively support the diverse learners learning in museums.In this study,an innovative learning model to support competency education for lifelong learning in museums is proposed.A game-based learning service named CoboFun that offers various types of problem-solving activities was developed to facilitate learners’interaction with exhibits and their peers in the museum.To examine the service design of CoboFun,learners’perceptions were evaluated and the differences in their cognitive styles were examined(Field Independent(FI)and Field Dependent(FD)).The results showed that both FI and FD learners enjoyed learning with CoboFun but that flexible learning tools needed to be provided to satisfy the different needs for the learners with different cognitive styles. 展开更多
