The power generation performance of a heaving body wave energy converter(HBWEC)can be enhanced through strategic deployment in proximity to natural or artificial coastal structures. In this study, coastal structures are represented by a partial reflection wall, enabling the device to harness additional reflected wave energy. However, the mechanisms by which the reflection coefficient and the clearance between the wall and the device affect energy conversion performance remain inadequately understood. This study experimentally investigates these effects. The findings demonstrate that the clearance impact on HBWEC power performance near partial reflection walls aligns with standing wave variation characteristics, with optimal positioning near the second antinode of the HBWEC's heaving natural period.Enhanced reflection coefficients improve energy conversion efficiency within the wave spectrum around the device's heaving natural period.Additionally, significant water sloshing observed within the clearance may diminish power performance,as verified through computational fluid dynamics(CFD)analysis. This phenomenon results from the multiplicative relationship of leeside clearance with 0.5λ(λis the wavelength). These insights suggest that practical engineering implementation requires balanced consideration of reflection coefficient, clearance, sloshing phenomenon, and heaving restriction system, rather than individual parameter optimization. 展开更多

Surface segregation is studied via the evolution of reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) patterns under different values of As4 BEP for InGaAs films. When the As4 BEP is set to be zero, the RHEED pattern keeps a 4x3/(nx3) structure with increasing temperature, and surface segregation takes place until 470 ℃ The RHEED pattern develops into a metal-rich (4x2) structure as temperature increases to 495℃. The reason for this is that surface segregation makes the In inside the InGaAs film climb to its surface. With the temperature increasing up to 515℃, the RHEED pattern turns into a GaAs(2x4) structure due to In desorption. While the As4 BEP comes up to a specific value (1.33 x 10-4 Pa-1.33 x 10-3 Pa), the surface temperature can delay the segregation and desorption. We find that As4 BEP has a big influence on surface desorption, while surface segregation is more strongly dependent on temperature than surface desorption. 展开更多

Taking the joint matching coefficient(JMC) which represents the contact area ratio of the joint in rock masses as the key parameter, a one-dimensional contacted interface model(CIM-JMC) was established in this study to describe the wave propagation across a single joint. According to this model, the reflected and transmitted waves at the joint were obtained, and the energy coefficients of reflection and transmission were calculated. Compared with the modified Split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB) experiment, it was validated by taking the incident wave of the SHPB test as the input condition in the CIM-JMC, and the reflected and transmitted waves across the joint were calculated by the model. The effects of four sets of JMCs(0.81, 0.64, 0.49, and 0.36) on the transmission and reflection of the stress wave propagation across the joint were analyzed and compared with the experimental results. It demonstrated that the values of CIM-JMC could represent both the transmission and reflection of the stress wave accurately when JMC > 0.5, but could relatively accurately represent the reflection rather than the transmission when JMC < 0.5. By contrasting energy coefficients of joints with different JMCs, it was revealed that energy dissipated sharply along the decrease of JMC when JMC > 0.5. 展开更多

The reflection and transmission of elastic waves through a couple-stress elastic slab that is sandwiched between two couple-stress elastic half-spaces are studied in this paper. Because of the couple-stress effects, there are three types of elastic waves in the couple-stress elastic solid, two of which are dispersive. The interface conditions between two couple-stress solids involve the surface couple and rotation apart from the surface traction and displacement. The nontraditional interface conditions between the slab and two solid half-spaces are used to obtain the linear algebraic equation sets from which the amplitude ratios of reflection and transmission waves to the incident wave can be determined. Then, the energy fluxes carried by the various reflection and transmission waves are calculated numerically and the normal energy flux conservation is used to validate the numerical results. The special case, couple-stress elastic slab sandwiched by the classical elastic half-spaces, is also studied and compared with the situation that the classical elastic slab sandwiched by the classical elastic half-spaces. Incident longitudinal wave(P wave) and incident transverse wave(SV wave) are both considered. The influences of the couplestress are mainly discussed based on the numerical results. It is found that the couple-stress mainly influences the transverse modes of elastic waves. 展开更多

Phenomena of reflection and refraction of plane harmonic waves at a plane interface between an elastic solid and doubleporosity dual-permeability material are investigated. The elastic solid behaves non-dissipatively, while double-porosity dual-permeability materials behave dissipatively to wave propagation due to the presence of viscosity in pore fluids. All the waves(i.e., incident and reflected) in an elastic medium are considered as homogeneous(i.e., having the same directions of propagation and attenuation), while all the refracted waves in double-porosity dual-permeability materials are inhomogeneous(i.e., having different directions of propagation and attenuation). The coefficients of reflection and refraction for a given incident wave are obtained as a non-singular system of linear equations. The energy shares of reflected and refracted waves are obtained in the form of an energy matrix. A numerical example is considered to calculate the partition of incident energy among various reflected and refracted waves. The effect of incident direction on the partition of the incident energy is analyzed with a change in wave frequency, wave-induced fluid-flow, pore-fluid viscosity and double-porosity structure. It has been confirmed from numerical interpretation that during the reflection/refraction process, conservation of incident energy is obtained at each angle of incidence. 展开更多

Background: The ability of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy(NIRS) to determine the digestible energy(DE)and metabolizable energy(ME) content of corn fed to growing pigs was tested. One hundred and seventeen corn samples, comprising different planting regions and varieties were collected from all over China in a three-year period. The samples were randomly split into a calibration set(n = 88) and a validation set(n = 29). The actual and calculated DE and ME content of the corn samples was determined by digestion-metabolism experiments and the prediction equations of Noblet and Perez(J Anim Sci. 71:3389–98,1993). The samples were then subjected to NIRS scanning and calibrations were performed by the modified partial least square(MPLS) regression method based on77 different spectral pre-treatments. The NIRS equations based on the actually determined and calculated DE and ME were built separately and then validated using validation samples. Results: The NIRS equations obtained from actually determined DE, the coefficient of determination for calibration(RSQcal), cross-validation(R^2CV), and validation(RSQv) were 0.89, 0.87 and 0.86, and these values for determined ME were 0.87, 0.86 and 0.86. For the NIRS equations built from calculated DE, the RSQcal, R^2CV, and RSQvvalues were 0.88, 0.85 and 0.84, and these values for calculated ME were 0.86, 0.84 and 0.82. Except for the equation based on calculated ME(RPD_v= 2.38, 〈 2.50), the other three equations built from actually determined energy and calculated DE produced good prediction performance(RPD_vranging from 2.53 to 2.69, 〉 2.50) when applied to validation samples. Conclusion: These results indicate that NIRS can be used as a quantitative method for the rapid determination of the available energy in corn fed to growing pigs, and the NIRS equations based on the actually determined energy produced better predictive performance than those built from calculated energy values. 展开更多

The reflection of three-dimensional(3D) plane waves in a highly anisotropic(triclinic) medium under the context of generalized thermoelasticity is studied. The thermoelastic nature of the 3D plane waves in an anisotropic medium is investigated in the perspective of the three-phase-lag(TPL), dual-phase-lag(DPL), Green-Naghdi-III(GNIII), Lord-Shulman(LS), and classical coupled(CL) theories. The reflection coefficients and energy ratios for all the reflected waves are obtained in a mathematical form. The rotational effects on the reflection characteristics of the 3D waves are discussed under the context of generalized thermoelasticity. Comparative analyses for the reflection coefficients of the waves among these generalized thermoelastic theories are performed. The energy ratios for each of the reflected waves establish the energy conservation law in the reflection phenomena of the plane waves. The highly anisotropic materials along with the rotation may have a significant role in the phenomenon of the reflection behavior of the 3D waves. Numerical computations are performed for the graphical representation of the study. 展开更多

Reflection occurs when internal tides impact on a steep continental slope. Separating reflected internal tide signals from incident ones is crucial to develop the parameterization of internal tide-driven turbulent mixing on the continental slopes. In this study, the performances of three different methods for estimating internal tide reflections are examined by using two different cases. The Hilbert transform-based method is found to be more suitable than two other methods for both cases considered in this study. The two other methods are effective for westward-propagating mode-1 internal tides impacting a slope, but inappropriate in the case where internal tides radiate from a Gaussian ridge impact the slope because of their inaccurate estimation of incident internal tides in the latter case. Such inaccurate estimation further influences the extraction of reflected signals and calculation of the reflected and cross term of energy fluxes. In addition, it should be noted that, due to the use of filtering, the method based on Hilbert transform may result in slight bias when assessing the incident and reflected signals near topographic features. 展开更多

The reflection and transmission of the level step to the water waves in the linear and continuous layer liquid were studied in this paper. Based on the matching method of the eigenfunction and a Boussinesq approximation, the analytical expression of the diffraction was obtained and the computing methods of the reflection and transmission en- ergy of the level step were proposed. For the incident wave with a frequency greater than that of the flotage, there is only one mode of plane traveling wave in the flow field. In the range of this greater frequency, the linear and continuous delamination effect will affect the reflection and transmission energy of the floating rectangular box. When the fre- quency of the incident wave is less than the flotage frequency, the energy of the plane traveling wave with infinite modes in the flow field will change into the energy of different modes for each incident wave of different modes. 展开更多

The use of cool materials on the building envelope is one of the most cost-effective ways to increase indoor thermal comfort conditions in hot climates and decrease the cooling energy needs.Despite the benefit of reducing cooling loads, researches have demonstrated that aging of roof coatings changes the initial solar reflectance(SR),which influences the long term building thermal and energy performance. Thus, this work presents preliminary natural weathering tests performed on samples of nine white coatings exposed to natural weathering for one year in the city of Sao Carlos,Brazil.Solar reflectances were measured with a spectrophotometer before and after exposure, every 3 months, for identifying the effect of aging along the time. The findings showed changes of 13%to 23%on SR after one year of natural weathering, with higher decrease on SR for rougher surfaces. The cleaning process restored from 90%to 100%of the original SR,which means maintenance can be an effective solution to restore the initial SR.Simulations indicated that roofs with higher solar reflectance increase indoor thermal comfort conditions and decrease the cooling energy need for buildings in hot climates, but the aging of white coatings increased the cooling energy needs along the time. 展开更多

The deployment of multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces(IRSs)in blockage-prone millimeter wave(mmWave)communication networks have garnered considerable attention lately.Despite the remarkably low circuit power consumption per IRS element, the aggregate energy consumption becomes substantial if all elements of an IRS are turned on given a considerable number of IRSs,resulting in lower overall energy efficiency(EE).To tackle this challenge,we propose a flexible and efficient approach that individually controls the status of each IRS element.Specifically, the network EE is maximized by jointly optimizing the associations of base stations(BSs)and user equipments(UEs),transmit beamforming, phase shifts of IRS elements, and the associations of individual IRS elements and UEs.The problem is efficiently addressed in two phases.First, the Gale-Shapley algorithm is applied for BS-UE association, followed by a block coordinate descent-based algorithm that iteratively solves the subproblems related to active beamforming, phase shifts, and element-UE associations. To reduce the tremendous dimensionality of optimization variables introduced by element-UE associations in large-scale IRS networks,we introduce an efficient algorithm to solve the associations between IRS elements and UEs.Numerical results show that the proposed elementwise control scheme improves EE by 34.24% compared to the network with IRS-all-on scheme. 展开更多

In this study, polyacrylic acid(PAA)films were employed as a model system, and a series of PAA films with tunable water wettability was systematically prepared by varying molecular weight and curing temperature.Using attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(ATR-FTIR),the molecular configurations of surface carboxyl groups(COOH),free carboxyl(COOH_(f))and hydrogen-bonded carboxyl(COOH_(HB),were directly correlated with the polar component of surface energy(γ^(s,p)).By decomposing theγ^(s,p)values of the PAA thin films as a sum of the contributions of COOH_(f)and COOH_(H B),the intrinsic polar component of surface energy of COOH_(H B)(γ_(H B)^(s,p*))was quantified for the first time as 8.34 mN/m,significantly lower than that of COOH_(f)(γ_(f)^(s,p*)=34 mN/m).This result highlights that hydrogen bonding markedly reduces theγ^(s,p),providing a rational explanation for the relatively large water contact angle observed on PAA thin films.Furthermore,it establishes a thermodynamic basis for estimating the fraction of surface COOH_(H B)groups(f H B)from wettability measurements.Further extension of the model to carboxyl-terminated self-assembled monolayers(COOH-SAMs)revealed that surface COOH density(ΣCOOH)critically regulates wetting behavior:whenΣCOOH ranges from 4.30 to 5.25 nm^(-2),COOH groups predominantly exist in a free state and facilitate effective hydration layers, thereby promoting superhydrophilicity.Overall, this study not only establishes a unified thermodynamic framework linking surface COOH configurations to macroscopic wettability, but also validates its universality by extending it to COOH-SAMs systems, thereby providing a unified theoretical framework for the controllable design of hydrophilicity in various COOH-functionalized surfaces. 展开更多

Thermal maturation and petroleum generation modeling of shales is essential for suc- cessful exploration and exploitation of conventional and unconventional oil and gas plays. For basin- wide unconventional resource plays such modeling, when well calibrated with direct maturity meas- urements from wells, can characterize and locate production sweet spots for oil, wet gas and dry gas. The transformation of kerogen to petroleum is associated with many chemical reactions, but models typically focus on first-order reactions with rates determined by the Arrhenius Equation. A miscon- ception has been perpetuated for many years that accurate thermal maturity modeling of vitrinite re- flectance using the Arrhenius Equation and a single activation energy, to derive a time-temperature index (~TTIARa), as proposed by Wood (1988), is flawed. This claim was initially made by Sweeney and Burnham (1990) in promoting their "EasyRo" method, and repeated by others. This paper dem- onstrates through detailed multi-dimensional burial and thermal modeling and direct comparison of the ~TTIARR and "EasyRo" methods that this is not the case. The ~TTIA^R method not only provides a very useful and sensitive maturity index, it can reproduce the calculated vitrinite reflectance values derived from models based on multiple activation energies (e.g., "EasyRo"). Through simple expres- sions the ~TTIAaa method can also provide oil and gas transformation factors that can be flexibly scaled and calibrated to match the oil, wet gas and dry gas generation windows. This is achieved in a more-computationally-efficient, flexible and transparent way by the ~TTIARR method than the "EasyRo" method. Analysis indicates that the "EasyRo" method, using twenty activation energies and a constant frequency factor, generates reaction rates and transformation factors that do not realisti- cally model observed kerogen behaviour and transformation factors over geologic time scales. 展开更多

In this paper, the design of a resonator rectenna, based on metamaterials and capable of harvesting radio-frequency energy at 2.45 GHz to power any low-power devices,is presented. The proposed design uses a simple and inexpensive circuit consisting of a microstrip patch antenna with a mushroom-like electromagnetic band gap(EBG),partially reflective surface(PRS)structure, rectifier circuit, voltage multiplier circuit, and 2.45 GHzWi-Fi module. The mushroom-like EBG sheet was fabricated on an FR4 substrate surrounding the conventional patch antenna to suppress surface waves so as to enhance the antenna performance.Furthermore, the antenna performance was improved more by utilizing the slotted I-shaped structure as a superstrate called a PRS surface. The enhancement occurred via the reflection of the transmitted power. The proposed rectenna achieved a maximum directive gain of 11.62 dBi covering the industrial, scientific, and medical radio band of 2.40–2.48 GHz.A Wi-Fi 4231 access point transmitted signals in the 2.45 GHz band. The rectenna, located 45◦anticlockwise relative to the access point, could achieve a maximum power of 0.53μW.In this study, the rectenna was fully characterized and charged to low-power devices. 展开更多

The present paper is concerned with the propagation of plane waves in an isotropic two-temperature generalized thermoelastic solid half-space in context of Green and Naghdi theory of type II (without energy dissipation). The governing equations in x – z plane are solved to show the existence of three coupled plane waves. The reflection of plane waves from a thermally insulated free surface is considered to obtain the relations between the reflection coefficients. A particular example of the half-space is chosen for numerical computations of the speeds and reflection coefficients of plane waves. Effects of two-temperature and rotation parameters on the speeds and the reflection coefficients of plane waves are shown graphically. 展开更多
