This study was conducted to explore the individual uses of formulaic sequence(FS)frequency and their effects on complexity,accuracy,and fluency(CAF)in academic writing.Data was collected from the conclusion sections o...This study was conducted to explore the individual uses of formulaic sequence(FS)frequency and their effects on complexity,accuracy,and fluency(CAF)in academic writing.Data was collected from the conclusion sections of a self-compiled corpus of 30 L2 master’s theses.Statistical analysis revealed several notable conclusions.1)Student writers tend to make repetitive use of particular FSs in single texts.2)FS use has a significant frequency effect on fluency,and the high-frequency group slightly outperforms the low-frequency group.3)FS use has a certain frequency effect on accuracy,and the high-frequency group demonstrates the strongest correlation between FS frequency and accuracy.4)FS use has a significant frequency effect on lexical complexity,and the low-frequency group slightly outperforms the high-frequency group.In the low-frequency group,FS use has a significant frequency effect on syntactic complexity as well.Finally,5)The results support Skehan’s trade-off effect,a competition between CAF,which,to a certain degree,is affected by individual uses of FS frequency.The low-frequency group displays a greater trade-off effect than the high-frequency group.展开更多

In addition, it investigated the relationship...This study explored the distribution of three types of English formulaic language, which involves four categories in L1 Chinese L2 English learners’ speaking performance. In addition, it investigated the relationship between the English learners’ use of formulaic language and their spoken English fluency. A CCA(canonical correlation analysis) was conducted to examine the correlations between two sets of fluency variables(dependent variables) and linguistic variables of English formulaic language use(independent variables). The fluency variable set consists of:(1)temporal indices such as SR(speech rate), AR(articulation rate), MLR(mean length of run), and PTR(phonation time ratio);(2) linguistic variables of English formulaic language like F2 R(twoword formulaic sequences/run ratio, B3 R(three-word lexical bundles/run ratio), and B4 R(fourword lexical bundles/run ratio). These are calculated according to the frequency of the English formulaic language in the speech samples of the participants(n = 86) across three academic levels.The results indicate that the learners’ spoken English fluency is highly related to their use of English formulaic language. Its limitations and future research directions are also discussed.展开更多

This library study begins by reviewing the dual-nature view of language in relation to formulaic aspect of language. Then, a brief survey of evidence from corpus linguistics is provided to demonstrate the formulaicity of language. What follows is the discussion of rehearsal and implicit learning vis-a-vis memory from the perspective of psycholinguistics. After that, the role of formulaic language in second language acquisition is examined by taking stock of empirical findings that have accumulated in this area. Finally, by way of conclusion, how the formulaicity of language can shed light on second/foreign language teaching theory is illustrated.展开更多

The ability of folk singers to master and perform a large repertoire of ballads fundamentally relies on oral formulas.Taking Shoubo Zhang,a folk singer from Shanxi Province,as a case study,this research applies oral f...The ability of folk singers to master and perform a large repertoire of ballads fundamentally relies on oral formulas.Taking Shoubo Zhang,a folk singer from Shanxi Province,as a case study,this research applies oral formula theory to analyzehis oral performances.The analysis shows that his performances depend on a system of formulas composed of metrical units andnarrative elements.Furthermore,the study finds that the singer’s performance ability manifests as a dynamic generativecapability,enabling flexible transitions within individual ballads as well as between different ballads through the use of formulas.Based on this,the paper extends this mechanism to the phenomenon of poetry generation in the Book of Songs,arguing for theuniversality of formulaic transitions as an intrinsic law of oral tradition.展开更多

A group of native English speakers also participated in this study to provide baseline data. One-way ANOVA analysis and post hoc tests confirmed that linguistic competence usually preceded formulaic competence for EFL learners. The findings also showed no statistically significant difference existing between the three groups of participants in the use of plain SBUs, and this could be attributed to the low degree of cultural-embeddedness and high semantic transparency of plain SBUs. It was further argued that a threshold has to be reached for EFL learners to go through a movement from rules to wholes.展开更多

Chronic heart failure(CHF)impairs cognitive function.Xijiaqi Formula(XJQ),a traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)used clinically to treat CHF,demonstrates potential for improving cognition in CHF patients.However,its prec...Chronic heart failure(CHF)impairs cognitive function.Xijiaqi Formula(XJQ),a traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)used clinically to treat CHF,demonstrates potential for improving cognition in CHF patients.However,its precise mechanism in treating post-CHF cognitive dysfunction remains unclear.This study systematically investigates XJQ’s effects on post-CHF cognitive dysfunction and the underlying mechanisms.The components of XJQ were identified through liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.CHF was induced in rats via ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery,followed by six weeks of XJQ treatment.Cardiac function was evaluated through echocardiography and hemodynamic parameters,while cognitive function was assessed using Morris water maze(MWM)and open field tests(OFT).XJQ treatment enhanced both cardiac and cognitive functions in CHF rats.Network pharmacology identified 12 core active components of XJQ and indicated its effect on cognitive dysfunction involved regulating synapses,inflammation,and phosphodiesterase 4(PDE4)-dependent cyclic adenosine monophosphate(cAMP)signaling.XJQ inhibited microglial and astrocyte activation,decreased proinflammatory cytokines,and mitigated neuronal damage.Notably,XJQ promoted synaptic repair and dendritic growth by downregulating PDE4 and upregulating cAMP,protein kinase A(PKA),cAMP-response element binding protein(CREB),brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF),PSD95,and synapsin I levels.Molecular docking and Bio-layer interferometry assays confirmed direct binding of quercetin,kaempferol,isorhamnetin,and darutoside to PDE4.In conclusion,XJQ alleviates neuroinflammation and enhances synaptic plasticity to improve cognitive dysfunction in CHF rats via the PDE4/cAMP/PKA/CREB signaling pathway.These findings provide valuable insight into the heart-brain axis.展开更多
A Cu-1.9Ni-1.9Co-0.9Si(mass fraction,%)alloy with high strength and electrical conductivity was designed by cluster formula approach.The microstructure evolution of the alloy during thermomechanical treatment was syst...A Cu-1.9Ni-1.9Co-0.9Si(mass fraction,%)alloy with high strength and electrical conductivity was designed by cluster formula approach.The microstructure evolution of the alloy during thermomechanical treatment was systematically investigated.The strengthening mechanism and electrical conductivity of the alloy were discussed in detail.The optimal thermomechanical treatment process was as follows:solid solution→80%cold rolling→(450℃,4 h)aging→50%cold rolling→(400℃,4 h)aging.The designed alloy achieved excellent comprehensive properties with a microhardness of HV 260,a yield strength of 843 MPa,a tensile strength of 884 MPa,and an electrical conductivity of 42.6%(IACS).Compared to direct aging treatment,the designed alloy subjected to multi-stage thermomechanical treatment had refined grains,high density of dislocations,and accelerated of precipitation of(Ni,Co)_(2)Si precipitates.High strength was mainly attributed to the combined effect of dislocation strengthening,work hardening and sub-grain strengthening,while good electrical conductivity was maintained through the precipitation of the large number of nanoparticles.展开更多
