On the basis of the relationship between forest ecosystem services and classified forest management, we hypothesized that the ecological-forest provides ecological services, whereas commercial-forest supplies wood and timber production, and the influences of the growth of population, social-economic development target, forest management methods and the technology changes on forest resources were also taken into account. The prediction reveals that the demand of total forestland of China will be 244.8, 261.2 and 362.2 million ha by the year 2010, 2020 and 2050, respectively. The results demonstrated that China will be confronted with a shortage of forest resources, especially with lack of ecological-oriented forests, in the future. It is suggested that sustainable management of forest resources must be reinforced and more attention should be drown no enhancing the service function of forest ecosystem.展开更多

In this study, we propose an assessment concept framework model for indirect-direct-ecosystem service (IN-DI-ESS) driving forces within this context and method for index construction that considers the selection of a robust and parsimonious variable set. Factor analysis was integrated into two-stage data envelopment analysis (TS-DEA) to determine the driving forces and their effects on water conservation services in forest ecosystems at the provincial scale in China. The results showed the following. 1) Ten indicators with factor scores more than 0.8 were selected as the minimum data set. Four indicators comprising population density, per capita gross domestic product, irrigation efficiency, and per capita food consumption were the indirect driving factors, and six indicators comprising precipitation, farmland into forestry or pasture, forest cover, habitat area, water footprint, and wood extraction were the direct driving forces. 2) Spearman's rank correlation test was performed to compare the overall effectiveness in two periods: stage 1 and stage 2. The calculated coefficients were 0.245, 0.136, and 0.579, respectively, whereas the tabulated value was 0.562. This indicates that the driving forces obviously differed in terms of their contribution to the overall effectiveness and they caused changes in water conservation services in different stages. In terms of the variations in different driving force effects in the years 2000 and 2010, the overall, stage 1, and stage 2 variances were 0.020, 0.065, and 0.079 in 2000, respectively, and 0.018, 0.063, and 0.071 in 2010. This also indicates that heterogeneous driving force effects were obvious in the process during the same period. Identifying the driving forces that affect service changes and evaluating their efficiency have significant policy implications for the management of forest ecosystem services. Advanced effectiveness measures for weak regions could be improved in an appropriate manner. In this study, we showed that factor analysis coupled with TS-DEA based on the IN-D1-ESS framework can increase the parsimony of driving force indicators, as well as interpreting the interactions among indirect and direct driving forces with forest ecosystem water conservation services, and reducing the uncertainty related to the internal consistency during data selection.展开更多

文摘The Kulpawn River Basin(KRB)plays a critical role in supporting rural livelihoods through agriculture, water supply, and biodiversity conservation. However, between 1995 and 2023,significant land use and land cover(LULC)changes have been observed, affecting ecosystem services(ESs).This study evaluated the ecosystem service values(ESVs)associated with LULC changes. The random forest algorithm was applied to extract LULC information from Landsat images for 1995,2005,2015,and 2023.The benefit transfer method was employed to estimate the ESVs over the study period.Questionnaires were also used to assess the views of respondents on the drivers of the ES changes in the basin. The results showed that agricultural lands expanded by 14.14%,built-up areas by 15.17%,and light savannah forest by 8.73%,while dense savannah forest and water bodies declined by 25.71%and 20.00%,respectively.The total estimated ESV was 410.09×10^(8),362.92×10^(8),335.30×10^(8),and 319.28×10^(8) USD/(hm^(2)·a)in 1995,2005,2015,and 2023,respectively,indicating that the total ESV declined from 410.09×10^(8) USD/(hm^(2)·a)in 1995 to 319.28×10^(8) USD/(hm^(2)·a)in 2023.The study concludes that the reduction in ESVs is due to the LULC changes resulting from agricultural activities, expansion of built-up areas, population sprawl, and artisanal mining activities.Hence, there is an urgent need to develop programs and strategies to mitigate and curtail the degradation of LULC and ESVs in the basin. These findings reveal a growing ecological vulnerability, threatening water security and rural livelihoods. The study offers valuable insights to guide sustainable land use planning and ecosystem conservation strategies.

文摘Cultural ecosystem services(CES)provided by urban green infrastructure are essential for enhancing social well-being and resilience.Identifying and mapping CES at a local scale is crucial for informed land-use decisions that align with citizens'perceptions. However, research on ecosystem services in Romania has been limited, with a notable gap in the assessment of CES provided by urban green spaces. This study is the first to focus on Băneasa Forest, the only urban forest in Bucharest, which serves as a vital recreational area for thousands of residents and visitors. For the first time in Romania, this research uses a web-based Participatory GIS survey to collect spatially referenced data. The survey, which combines questionnaires and mapping exercises, allows us to produce high-resolution CES maps based on 816 responses. The results reveal that the forest's natural characteristics are perceived as the primary contributors to CES.These findings are valuable for urban planners,as they highlight the needs and expectations of forest visitors, promote conservation efforts, and foster collaboration to prevent conflicts.Alongside factors frequently discussed in the literature, such as age and accessibility, the percentage of green space in residents'neighborhoods emerges as a significant factor influencing CES preferences. This insight presents a novel contribution to the literature, being of particular importance for urban planners and policymakers,as it underscores the need to consider not just the green space within parks and forests, but also the broader context of surrounding neighborhoods when planning for CES.Understanding that the availability of nearby green space influences residents'CES preferences can guide more effective strategies to enhance access to CES in urban areas, both in Bucharest and elsewhere. This is especially relevant in the face of climate change and other emerging challenges, which are likely to increase the demand for CES in the future.

文摘Cultural ecosystem services(CES),which encompass recreational and aesthetic values, contribute to human wellbeing and yet are often underrepresented in forest management planning due to challenges in quantifying these services. This study introduces the Recreational and Aesthetic Values of Forested Landscapes(RAFL)index,a novel framework combining six measurable recreational and aesthetic components:Stewardship,Naturalness,Complexity,Visual Scale,Historicity, and Ephemera. The RAFL index was integrated into a Linear Programming(LP)Resource Capability Model(RCM)to assess trade-offs between CES and other ecosystem services, including timber production, wildfire resistance, and biodiversity. The approach was applied in a case study in Northern Portugal, comparing two forest management scenarios:Business as Usual(BAU),dominated by eucalyptus plantations, and an Alternative Scenario(ALT),focused on the conversion to native species:cork oak, chestnut, and pedunculate oak. Results revealed that the ALT scenario consistently achieved higher RAFL values, reflecting its potential to enhance CES,while also supporting higher biodiversity and wildfire resilience compared to the BAU scenario. Results highlighted further that management may maintain steady timber production and wildfire regulatory services while addressing concerns with CES.This study provides a replicable methodology for quantifying CES and integrating them into forest management frameworks, offering actionable insights for decision-makers.The findings highlight the effectiveness of the approach in designing landscape mosaics that provide CES while addressing the need to supply provisioning and regulatory ecosystem services.

文摘Urban forest parks deliver a wide spectrum of ecosystem services that support biodiversity, climate regulation, and public well-being;however,their perceived value among local visitors remains underexplored in Southeast Asia. This study investigates visitor perceptions and economic valuation of ecosystem services at Mount Pulai Forest Eco Park in Johor,Malaysia.Grounded in the Total Economic Value(TEV)framework and ecosystem service theory, the research employed a structured on-site survey of 392 visitors and applied the Contingent Valuation Method(CVM)to assess awareness, appreciation, and willingness-to-pay(WTP)for forest conservation.Findings revealed that visitors highly valued regulating services, such as air purification and flood mitigation(mean≈4.3/5),and supporting services, like biodiversity(mean≈4.2/5),while provisioning services were rated lower(mean≈2.8/5).Despite limited familiarity with ecological terminology, only 33%understood the term“ecosystem services”.In contrast,a substantial majority(79.1%)expressed WTP for conservation efforts, proposing an average annual contribution of MYR 51.32.Additionally,65%of respondents supported an entry fee model, suggesting a mean payment of MYR 3.07 per visit. These results underscore the economic and non-economic value that urban residents assign to forest benefits, offering new insights into conservation finance and public engagement. The study’s innovation lies in its integration of ecosystem perception with economic valuation in an urban forest setting, providing a replicable framework for sustainable park management across Southeast Asia.

文摘Ecosystem services(ES)are the connection between nature and society, and are essential for the well-being of local communities that depend on them.In Ethiopia, church forests and the surrounding agricultural matrix supply numerous ES.However, the ES delivered by both land use types have not yet been assessed simultaneously. Here we surveyed both church forests and their agricultural matrices, aiming to quantify, compare and unravel the drivers underlying tree-based ES supply, density and multifunctionality. We found that almost all church forests and half of the agricultural matrices provided high ES densities.ES multifunctionality was higher in the agricultural matrices, suggesting that people deliberately conserve or plant multifunctional tree species.Furthermore, the supply of all categories of ES was positively correlated with church forest age(p-value<0.001)in the agricultural matrix, while the extent of church forest was positively correlated with the density of all categories ecosystem services score in the church forests(p-value<0.001).Our results can be used to prioritize conservation efforts at sites that provide high levels of ES supply,ES density and ES multifunctionality, and to prioritize restoration efforts at sites with low levels thereof.
文摘As the main window for the public to understand the outside world, mass media has an undeniable influence on economic and social development. The way in which the media reports on issues related to people with disabilities not only affects the voice of the disabled community, which determines the public image of the“disappearing”disabled community, but also affects the public awareness and recognition of the disability cause. To further explore the current status of mainstream media’s coverage of the disability cause, this article combines relevant concepts from media function theory and analyzes reports related to the integrated development of the disability cause in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area by using the examples of the Zhuhai Special Zone Daily,Southern Metropolis Daily, and Shenzhen Special Zone Daily since the release of the Development Plan Outline for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in 2019.The results show that the“Integrated Development of the Disability Cause in the Bay Area”presented in the reports has the characteristics of service-oriented and cooperation-based,which is in line with the overall trend of the development of China’s disability cause. However, due to factors such as a small overall quantity of related reports,a relatively single style of reporting and information sources, and a strong promotional tone, there still exists a certain difference between the“media reality”and objective reality constructed by these reports. Therefore, this article suggests that institutional media should fully strengthen their coverage of relevant topics, while enhancing the timeliness and readability of reports by enriching various reporting elements.By further enhancing the effectiveness of reporting and communication, the integrated development of the disability cause in the Bay Area can be effectively promoted.
文摘The effective identification and protection of ecological spaces is a fundamental cornerstone for achieving sustainable development and promoting a green society. It plays an indispensable role in ecological protection, resource management, and environmental governance, and is of great significance for the sustainable development of human society.Rapid and scientific identification of ecological spaces provides a scientific foundation for regional ecological protection planning. In this study,we used survey data from the planning and design of forest resources alongside 2017 Landsat 8 OLI remote sensing image to comprehensively analyze forest ecological service functions and ecological sensitivity using the layer-cake model to identify ecological spaces in Nanjing City. The results show that the area of extremely important forest ecological service function zones in Nanjing was 288.57 km^(2),accounting for 3.47%of the total area of Nanjing. The area of highly sensitive zones in Nanjing was 464.39 km^(2),accounting for 7.05%.Considering both forest ecological service functions and sensitivity, the area of core ecological spaces in Nanjing was 692.86 km^(2),accounting for 10.52%of the total area, and the main land use types were woodland and waters. The area of transitional ecological space in Nanjing was the largest, reaching 3150.29 km^(2),accounting for 47.83%of Nanjing s total area. This study provides valuable insights for optimizing the layout of ecological spaces and serves as a reference for related research efforts.

文摘A new model was developed to predict forestland demand of China during the years of 2010-2050 in terms of the concept of forest ecosystem services. It is suggested that sustainable management of forest resources must be reinforced and more attention should be drown no enhancing the service function of forest ecosystem.

文摘As the most important ecosystem in Beijing, the forest supports a lot of ecosystem services to local and around communities, which plays a key role in the maintenance of urban ecological security. However, the valuation on the forest ecosystem services based on regional scale could not provide precise and reasonable values for forestry sector management. In this study, we estimated the magnitudes and economic values of the forest ecosystem services in Beijing at sublot level. The economic value of forest ecosystem services in Beijing was estimated to be 19 339.71×10 6 yuan(RMB) in 2004.Among all the ecosystem services indicators we estimated in this study, only fruit, timber and part of the recreation(which only include the tourism income from the forest parks and scenic areas, but not include that from other forest types) were measured in the social economic system. As estimated in this study, more than 82.19% of the economic value of forest ecosystem services could not be measured in the socio-economic statistical system. The importance of forest ecosystem services in Beijing to human welfare was underestimated by the socio-economic system. Therefore, the policies about the eco-compensation of forest ecosystem services should be established to maintain the sustainable supply of the forest ecosystem services in Beijing.

文摘Identifying the driving forces that cause changes in forest ecosystem services related to water conservation is essential for the design of interventions that could enhance positive impacts as well as minimizing negative impacts. In this study, we showed that factor analysis coupled with TS-DEA based on the IN-D1-ESS framework can increase the parsimony of driving force indicators, as well as interpreting the interactions among indirect and direct driving forces with forest ecosystem water conservation services, and reducing the uncertainty related to the internal consistency during data selection.

文摘The relationship between landscape patterns and soil conservation,as well as the need for nature-based soil erosion control and landscape pattern optimization, have increasingly gained attention in the scientific and political community in the past decade. With the implementation of a series of afforestation/reforestation projects in the western China, the optimization and management of forest landscape patterns will become more important for soil conservation. In this study, the Bailongjiang Watershed(BLJW),in the western China, was used as a case study to explore the relationship between the forest landscape pattern and soil conservation services using mathematical and spatial statistics methods.A spatially-explicit model called the sediment delivery ratio(SDR)model of the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs(InVEST)was used to assess the soil conservation service in each sub-basin of BLJW in 1990,2002,and 2014,and landscape indices were used to describe changes in forest landscape patterns in each sub-basin.Nine forest landscape indices, including the percentage of landscape(PLAND),largest patch index(LPI),edge density(ED),landscape shape index(LSI),mean patch shape(SHAPEMN),patch cohesion index(COHESION),landscape division index(DIVISION),splitting index(SPLIT)and aggregation index(AI),were significantly correlated to the soil conservation service.PLAND,AI,LSI and SPLIT of forestland were determined to be the more important landscape indicators. The results also indicated that soil conservation was substantially scale-dependent.The results demonstrated that landscape type diversity greatly affected watershed soil conservation and can be used for forest landscape restoration and management.Furthermore, spatial statistics analysis indicated that the Spatial Lag Model(SLM)was superior to the Ordinary Least Squares(OLS)for soil conservation regressions in 1990 and 2014,while OLS was more appropriate for the regression in 2002.These findings will be useful for enhancing soil conservation and for optimizing mountainous forest landscape patterns for afforestation/reforestation and regional development.Future planning and implementation of ecological restoration should focus more on strategic spatial planning and integrated landscape management with full consideration of future climate, water availability/consumption,hydrological regime, topography, and watershed features, especially on afforestation and revegetation projects in western mountainous China, where the socio-ecological system is fragile and poor.

文摘The trade-offs and synergies of forest ecosystem service are important research topics for several disciplines. The multi-scale analysis of service trade-offs and synergies assists in the implementation of more effective forest resource management.Based on multi-source data including forest distribution, topography,NDVI,meteorology and soil conditions, key forest ecosystem services, including total forest volume, carbon storage, water yield, soil retention and habitat quality were mapped and evaluated for the Funiu Mountain Region through integrated deployment of the CASA model, the InVEST3.2 model and the ArcGIS10.2 software. The characteristics of trade-offs and synergies among different ecosystem services were then mapped and considered across multiple spatial scales(i.e.,by region, north and south slopes, vertical belt)using the spatial overlay analysis method. The main results are as follows:(1)Mean forest volume is 49.26 m^(3)/ha,carbon density is 156.94 t/ha,water yield depth is 494.46 mm,the unit amount of soil retention is 955.4 t/ha,and the habitat quality index is 0.79.(2)The area of forests with good synergy is 28.79%,and the area of forests with poor synergy is 10.15%,while about 61.06%of forests show severe trade-offs and weak trade-offs.The overall benefits of forest ecosystem services in the study area are still low.In the future, bad synergy and severe trade-off areas should be the focus of forest resource management and efficiency regulation.(3)Synergy between ecosystem services is better for forest on south slope than that on north slope.Deciduous broad-leaved forest belt at moderate elevations on south slope in the mountains(SIII)has the highest synergies, while that at low elevations on north slope(NI)exhibits the lowest synergy levels.

文摘As a Nature-Based Solution, urban forests deliver a number of environmental ecosystem services(EESs).To quantify these EESs,well-defined,reliable,quantifiable and stable indicators are needed. With literature analysis and expert knowledge gathered within COST Action FP1204 GreenInUrbs,we proposed a classification of urban forest EESs into three categories:(A)regulation of air, water, soil and climate;(B)provisioning of habitat quality;and(C)provisioning of other goods and services. Each category is divided into EES types:(a)amelioration of air quality;restoration of soil and water;amelioration of the microclimate;removal of CO2 from the air;(b)provision of habitat for biodiversity;support for resilient urban ecosystems;provision of genetic diversity;and(c)provision of energy and nutrients;provision of grey infrastructure resilience. Each EES type provides one or more benefits. For each of these 12 benefits,we propose a set of indicators to be used when analyzing the impacts on the identified EESs.Around half of the 36 indicators are relevant to more than one single benefit, which highlights complex interrelationships. The indicators of wider applicability are tree and stand characteristics, followed by leaf physical traits and tree species composition. This knowledge is needed for the optimization of the EESs delivered by urban forests, now and in the future.

文摘The scientific assessment of ecosystem ser-vice value(ESV)plays a critical role in regional ecologi-cal protection and management, rational land use planning, and the establishment of ecological security barriers. The ecosystem service value of the Northeast Forest Belt from 2005 to 2020 was assessed, focusing on spatial–temporal changes and the driving forces behind these dynamics.Using multi-source data, the equivalent factor method, and geo-graphic detectors,we analyzed natural and socio-economic factors affecting the region.which was crucial for effective ecological conservation and land-use planning.Enhanced the effectiveness of policy formulation and land use plan-ning.The results show that the ESV of the Northeast Forest Belt exhibits an overall increasing trend from 2005 to 2020,with forests and wetlands contributing the most. However, there are significant differences between forest belts.Driven by natural and socio-economic factors, the ESV of forest belts in Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces showed significant growth. In contrast, the ESV of Forest Belts in Liaoning and Inner Mongolia of China remains relatively stable, but the spatial differentiation within these regions is characterized by significant clustering of high-value and low-value areas.Furthermore, climate regulation and hydrological regulation services were identified as the most important ecological functions in the Northeast Forest Belt, contributing greatly to regional ecological stability and human well-being.The ESV in the Northeast Forest Belt is improved during the study period, but the stability of the ecosystem is still chal-lenged by the dual impacts of natural and socio-economic factors. To further optimize regional land use planning and ecological protection policies,it is recommended to prior-itize the conservation of high-ESV areas, enhance ecological restoration efforts for wetlands and forests, and reasonably control the spatial layout of urban expansion and agricul-tural development.Additionally, this study highlights the importance of tailored ecological compensation policies and strategic land-use planning to balance environmental protec-tion and economic growth.

文摘Management of forest lands considering multi-functional approaches is the basis to sustain or enhance the provi-sion of specific benefits, while minimizing negative impacts to the environment.Defining a desired management itinerary to a forest depends on a variety of factors, including the forest type, its ecological characteristics, and the social and economic needs of local communities.A strategic assessment of the forest use suitability(FUS)(namely productive,protective,conservation-oriented,social and multi-functional)at regional level, based on the provision of forest ecosystem services and trade-offs between FUS alternatives, can be used to develop management strategies that are tailored to the specific needs and conditions of the forest. The present study assesses the provision of multiple forest ecosystem services and employs a decision model to identify the FUS that sup-ports the most present and productive ecosystem services in each stand in Catalonia. For this purpose,we apply the latest version of the Ecosystem Management Decision Support(EMDS)system,a spatially oriented decision support system that provides accurate results for multi-criteria management. We evaluate 32 metrics and 12 as-sociated ecosystem services indicators to represent the spatial reality of the region.According to the results, the dominant primary use suitability is social, followed by protective and productive.Nevertheless, final assignment of uses is not straightforward and requires an exhaustive analysis of trade-offs between all alternative options,in many cases identifying flexible outcomes, and increasing the representativeness of multi-functional use.The assignment of forest use suitability aims to significantly improve the definition of the most adequate management strategy to be applied.

文摘Background:Forests contribute to human wellbeing through the provision of important ecosystem services. Methods:In this study,we investigated how the perceived importance of ecosystem services may impact the overall benefit provided by managed watersheds at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest over a 45-year period, using standardized measures of service capacity weighted by service importance weights derived from a survey of beneficiaries. Results:The capacity of watersheds to regulate water flow and quality was high in all watersheds throughout the study period, whereas cultural services such as scenic beauty declined after harvest.Impacts on greenhouse gas regulation depended on the efficiency with which harvested biomass was used.Surveys revealed that stakeholders placed high value on all ecosystem services, with regulating and cultural services seen as more important than provisioning services. When service metrics were weighted by survey responses and aggregated into a single measure, total service provision followed the same overall trend as greenhouse gas regulation.Where biomass use was less efficient in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, harvesting resulted in an overall "ecosystem service debt";where use was more efficient, this "ecosystem service debt" was reduced.Beneficiaries' educational backgrounds significantly affected overall assessment of service provision.Beneficiaries with college or university degrees incurred smaller "ecosystem service debts" and were less negatively affected by harvesting overall. Conclusions:This study highlights the importance of including empirical measures of beneficiary preference when attempting to quantify overall provision of ecosystem services to human beneficiaries over time.
