The synthetic defining style, a predominant way used to define verbs in many dictionaries, is the main factor that makes dictionary definitions vague and incomplete. The present paper argues that instead of the synthetic defining mode, an analytical meaning-explaining way should be used in dictionaries designed for SLA learners. The analytical meanings of verbs are viewed as mini-narratives and form event schemata comprised of three sub-schemata, namely, participant schema, action schema and scenario schema. The three sub-schemata should be clearly fore-grounded in verbs' definitions in learners' dictionaries. 展开更多

This paper, taking Incoterms for international trade as an example (with "CIF" as the case for analysis), introduces 7 types of dictionary structures (overall structure, frame stzucture/megastrncture, macrostructure, microstzucture, distribution structure, cross-reference stzucture/mediostrncture and access structure), summarizes the knowledge system of international trade terms (consisting of "international trade", "sets of rules of international trade terms", "Incoterms 2010", and "CIF"), and illustrates the methods of systematically presenting the knowledge system of international trade terms through dictionary structures in an English-English-Chinese bilingualized business English learners' dictionary with Oxford Business English Dictionary for Learners of English (New Edition) as a reference. Scaffolding Information of Learner’s Dictionaries for L2 Writing: A User Perspective

As a major resource and tool of language learning, learner’s dictionaries have provided sufficient information forL2 writing, which serves as a good guide of peer feedback. Hence, learner’s dictionaries are an indispensable partof scaffolding in the L2 writing feedback system. However, the effects of dictionary use in L2 writing have longbeen ignored either in L2 writing pedagogy or in learner lexicography. By applying the concept of “scaffolding” topeer feedback as the theoretical framework, this study first clarifies three distinct types of scaffolding informationpresented in current English learner’s dictionaries, and then makes an investigation into EFL learners’ perceptionand practical use of scaffolding information in their English writing. Results show that most EFL learners havepositive attitudes towards scaffolding information and its role in motivating effective feedback in English writing.But their practical use of such information is not satisfactory owing to their inadequate skills and knowledge ofdictionary use. This reflects a high demand of a dictionary use course in universities, which will help to raise EFLlearners’ dictionary use efficiency as well as improve English teachers’ lexicographical expertise in English writingpedagogy. 展开更多

In this article, this latest edition is examined with re spect to two primary aspects: syntactic and semantic information based on Chan, A.C. and Y. Loong's evaluating criteria of learn er's dictionary. English Language Corpora as a Secondary ELT Resource for Indian Learners

The author proposes here for utilizing ELC (English Language Corpora) as a secondary resource for developing ELT (English Language Teaching) materials for teaching English to Indian learners. We argue for using ELC as one of the most authentic representative collections of modem English language from where we extract necessary linguistic data, information, and examples to develop basic as well as additional resources of ELT, such as, text books, reference materials, syllabuses, grammar books, dictionaries, and terminology databases, etc., for Indian learners. Keeping the requirements of individual learners in mind we propose to customize materials to make these maximally useful within the broader scheme of CALT (Computer Assisted Language Teaching). In our view, ELT resources developed from ELC are more useful for Indian learners, because ELC represents diversified varieties of usage of modem English in real situations, which Indian learners need to assimilate to be at par with others across the globe. Also ELC-based ELT resources are more interesting and beneficial to Indian learners, if instructors carefully utilize these resources keeping in mind the requirements of learners. If Indian ELT learners want to compete in global frame, then utilization of ELC-based ELT resources is the most useful solution, which we can ignore at the cost of our own peril. 展开更多

The Role of Bilingualised Learner's Dictionary in Vocabulary Learning of Chinese College Students as non-English Majors

After comparing the features of monolingual and bilingual learner's dictionaries, and examining the definitions and examples of three entry words(‘owe',‘deadlock'and‘pertinent') in six popular learner's dictionaries in China, we make a tentative conclusion that bilingualised dictionary is the better choice in vocabulary learning of Chinese college students as non-English majors. Some further investigations have to be conducted about the status quo of dictionary use among Chinese college students as non-English majors and their vocabulary learning strategies. 展开更多

Due to different experience and thinking ways between Chi-nese and English, it is not easy for users to understand and translate the metaphors boxes without the help of proper translationstrategies. As an authoritative bilingual version for learners, it provided a template of understanding and translating metaphors.Thus, studying its strategies used in translating the metaphors boxes will be helpful for learners to understand and translate meta-phors in language learning. Although the middle construction has attracted significant attention from syntacticians, its identity still remains controversial and it is not treated as a separate grammatical category in any English learner's dictionary. This article, based on the data collected from three English learner's dictionaries, investigates the middle construction in terms of its syntactic and semantic properties and the constraints on its use. It shows that the three learner's dictionaries treat the middle construction in inconsistent and problematic manners. The middle use of a verb is not distinguished from either transitive verbs with an implicit object or intransitive verbs, which may hinder English learners' acquisition of the construction. The article proposes that middle verbs should be treated as a separate subcategory of verbs on a par with transitive and intransitive verbs so that learners will become more aware of them and learn to use them correctly. 展开更多

外向型汉语学习词典的传统编纂模式面临效率低、更新滞后等挑战,而大语言模型辅助词典编纂为解决这些问题提供了新途径。研究以国产大语言模型DeepSeek为对象,探讨其在外向型汉语学习词典核心微观结构信息“释义”“例证”编纂中的辅助... 外向型汉语学习词典的传统编纂模式面临效率低、更新滞后等挑战,而大语言模型辅助词典编纂为解决这些问题提供了新途径。研究以国产大语言模型DeepSeek为对象,探讨其在外向型汉语学习词典核心微观结构信息“释义”“例证”编纂中的辅助作用并发现:释义上,DeepSeek可辅助编者提升释义的可理解性与系统性,提升义项划分的精细度及排序的合理性;例证上,DeepSeek可辅助编者提升例证的典型性及可理解性。然而,DeepSeek应用于词典编纂中仍存在部分问题,如“虚构文献影响词典权威性”“数据混杂致使义项提取缺乏通用性、稳定性”“生成例句难以兼顾多项标准要求”等。为进一步提升大语言模型辅助词典编纂的效果,编者应加强词典编纂垂域知识库建设与应用、发挥大规模语料库与LLM的协同作用并运用LLM提升汉语语料库性能。 展开更多

外向型汉语学习词典目前存在较严重的质量问题,词典评价研究虽对提高词典质量具有重要意义,但过往研究却存在评价主体单一、评价方法主观、评价内容失衡等诸多问题。为突破词典评价研究瓶颈,提高词典编纂质量,本研究拟构建用户视域下的... 外向型汉语学习词典目前存在较严重的质量问题,词典评价研究虽对提高词典质量具有重要意义,但过往研究却存在评价主体单一、评价方法主观、评价内容失衡等诸多问题。为突破词典评价研究瓶颈,提高词典编纂质量,本研究拟构建用户视域下的外向型在线汉语学习词典评价指标体系,构建流程为:首先,从用户需求研究文献、APP Store留言板块、深度访谈等数据源中爬取用户评价语料以构建用户评价语料库,借助内容分析法对语料分析后构建初始评价指标体系。其次,采用德尔菲法对指标体系进行优化。最后,利用层次分析法计算出指标权重。最终确立的评价指标体系包含3个一级指标、19个二级指标及56个三级指标。 展开更多

文章以中国知网(CNKI)中北京大学中文核心、CSSCI、CSCD三类期刊为封闭域,利用CiteSpace软件对我国学习词典相关文献进行可视化分析。研究发现:(1)学习词典,尤其是外向型汉语学习词典在国内词典研究中占比较低;(2)学习词典研究整体呈倒... 文章以中国知网(CNKI)中北京大学中文核心、CSSCI、CSCD三类期刊为封闭域,利用CiteSpace软件对我国学习词典相关文献进行可视化分析。研究发现:(1)学习词典,尤其是外向型汉语学习词典在国内词典研究中占比较低;(2)学习词典研究整体呈倒U形趋势,研究高峰期为2008年至2014年;(3)宏观层面的学习词典研究较少,微观层面的研究集中在释义和例证上,研究的系统性弱;(4)近年来的研究热点为“语料库”和“融媒体”,“融媒体”的热度预计在未来几年内持续保持高涨。基于以上发现,研究认为,学习词典尤其是汉语单语学习词典的理论研究需加强,词典编纂与现代技术发展的结合应加大,词典语料库建设需进一步完善。 展开更多

英语学习词典作为文化传播的重要媒介,通过特定话语方式建构国家形象,并在一定程度上影响学习者认知。本研究基于系统功能语言学框架,运用及物性分析方法,对《牛津高阶英语词典》(第10版)中的例证进行批判性分析,探讨该词典如何建构非... 英语学习词典作为文化传播的重要媒介,通过特定话语方式建构国家形象,并在一定程度上影响学习者认知。本研究基于系统功能语言学框架,运用及物性分析方法,对《牛津高阶英语词典》(第10版)中的例证进行批判性分析,探讨该词典如何建构非洲形象。研究发现:①词典呈现的非洲形象具有多维度特征,其中地域维度尤为突出;②非洲形象主要通过及物性系统中的物质过程、关系过程和心理过程构建,且“非洲”(Africa)及相关术语在这些过程中较少充当施动者、感知者或载体/被识别者,呈现出明显的客体化特征;③非洲形象总体上以中性或积极表征为主,但仍存在一定负面再现。本研究不仅揭示了英语学习词典在国家形象建构中的话语机制,为词典批评研究提供新的理论视角,同时对词典编纂实践中的文化表征策略及跨文化交际研究具有重要启示。 展开更多
