In situ calibrating optical tweezers with sinusoidal-wave drag force method

We introduce a corrected sinusoidal-wave drag force method (SDFM) into optical tweezers to calibrate the trapping stiffness of the optical trap and conversion factor (CF) of photodetectors. First, the theoretical analysis and experimental result demonstrate that the correction of SDFM is necessary, especially the error of no correction is up to 11.25% for a bead of 5μm in diameter. Second, the simulation results demonstrate that the SDFM has a better performance in the calibration of optical tweezers than the triangular-wave drag force method (TDFM) and power spectrum density method (PSDM) at the same signal-to-noise ratio or trapping stiffness. Third, in experiments, the experimental standard deviations of calibration of trapping stiffness and CF with the SDFM are about less than 50% of TDFM and PSDM especially at low laser power. Finally, the experiments of stretching DNA verify that the in situ calibration with the SDFM improves the measurement stability and accuracy. 展开更多

An computationally efficient damage identification technique for the planar and space truss structures is presented based on the force method and the micro ge-netic algorithm.For this purpose,the general equilibrium equations and the kinematic relations in which the reaction forces and the displacements at nodes are take into ac-count,respectively,are formulated.The compatibility equations in terms of forces are explicitly presented using the singular value decomposition(SVD)technique.Then governing equations with unknown reaction forces and initial elongations are derived.Next,the micro genetic algorithm(MGA)is used to properly identify the site and ex-tent of multiple damage cases in truss structures.In order to verify the accuracy and the superiority of the proposed damage detection technique,the numerical solutions are presented for the planar and space truss models.The numerical results indicate that the combination of the force method and the MGA can provide a reliable tool to accurately and efficiently identify the multiple damages of the truss structures. 展开更多

Aero-propulsion analysis of distributed ducted-fan propulsion based on lifting-line driven body-force model

As the environmental problems become increasingly serious,distributed electrical propulsion systems with higher aerodynamic efficiency and lower pollution emission have received extensive attention in recent years.The distributed electrical propulsion usually employs the new aero-propulsion integrated configuration.A simulation strategy for internal and external flow coupling based on the combination of lifting line theory and body force method is proposed.The lifting line theory and body force method as source term are embedded into the Navier-Stokes formulation.The lift and drag characteristics of the aero-propulsion coupling configuration are simulated.The results indicate that the coupling configuration has the most obvious lift augmentation at 12°angle of attack,which can provide an 11.11%increase in lift for the airfoil.At 0°angle of attack,the pressure difference on the lip parts provides the thrust component,which results in a lower drag coefficient.Additionally,the failure impact of a ducted fan at the middle or edge on aerodynamics is investigated.For the two failure conditions,the lift of the coupling configuration is decreased significantly by 27.85%and 26.14%respectively,and the lip thrust is decreased by 70.74%and 56.48%respectively. 展开更多

Using the concept of the base forces, a new finite element method (base force element method, BFEM) based on the complementary energy principle is presented for accurate modeling of structures with large displacements and large rotations. First, the complementary energy of an element is described by taking the base forces as state variables, and is then separated into deformation and rotation parts for the case of large deformation. Second, the control equations of the BFEM based on the complementary energy principle are derived using the Lagrange multiplier method. Nonlinear procedure of the BFEM is then developed. Finally, several examples are analyzed to illustrate the reliability and accuracy of the BFEM. 展开更多

In loosely coupled or large-scale problems with high dominance ratios,slow fission source convergence can take extremely long time,reducing Monte Carlo(MC)criticality calculation efficiency.Although various acceleration methods have been developed,some methods cannot reduce convergence times,whereas others have been limited to specific problem geometries.In this study,a new fission source convergence acceleration(FSCA)method,the forced propagation(FP)method,has been proposed,which forces the fission source to propagate and accelerate fission source convergence.Additionally,some stabilization techniques have been designed to render the method more practical.The resulting stabilized method was then successfully implemented in the MC transport code,and its feasibility and effectiveness were tested using the modified OECD/NEA,one-dimensional slab benchmark,and the Hoogenboom full-core problem.The comparison results showed that the FP method was able to achieve efficient FSCA. 展开更多

Each joint of hydraulic drive quadruped robot is driven by the hydraulic drive unit(HDU), and the contacting between the robot foot end and the ground is complex and variable, which increases the difficulty of force control inevitably. In the recent years, although many scholars researched some control methods such as disturbance rejection control, parameter self-adaptive control, impedance control and so on, to improve the force control performance of HDU, the robustness of the force control still needs improving. Therefore, how to simulate the complex and variable load characteristics of the environment structure and how to ensure HDU having excellent force control performance with the complex and variable load characteristics are key issues to be solved in this paper. The force control system mathematic model of HDU is established by the mechanism modeling method, and the theoretical models of a novel force control compensation method and a load characteristics simulation method under different environment structures are derived, considering the dynamic characteristics of the load stiffness and the load damping under different environment structures. Then, simulation effects of the variable load stiffness and load damping under the step and sinusoidal load force are analyzed experimentally on the HDU force control performance test platform, which provides the foundation for the force control compensation experiment research. In addition, the optimized PID control parameters are designed to make the HDU have better force control performance with suitable load stiffness and load damping, under which the force control compensation method is introduced, and the robustness of the force control system with several constant load characteristics and the variable load characteristics respectively are comparatively analyzed by experiment. The research results indicate that if the load characteristics are known, the force control compensation method presented in this paper has positive compensation effects on the load characteristics variation, i.e., this method decreases the effects of the load characteristics variation on the force control performance and enhances the force control system robustness with the constant PID parameters, thereby, the online PID parameters tuning control method which is complex needs not be adopted. All the above research provides theoretical and experimental foundation for the force control method of the quadruped robot joints with high robustness. 展开更多

Based on the review of present force coefficients estimation methods, a new method in the frequency domain, revised cross-spectrum estimation method, is presented in this paper. Some experiments on the wave-current force on inclined cylinders are also described and the wave current force coefficients are estimated by the revised cross-spectrum estimation method. From the results, it is found that the wave and current directions have some regular effect on the coefficients. According to the results, some empirical formulas are obtained for converting the wave-current force coefficients on inclined cylinders into a unified coefficient. Comparisons show that the unified coefficients are in good agreement with other results. 展开更多

A new research perspective is proposed to optimize the topology of truss structure by force cone method,which involves force cone drawing rules and growth rules.Through the comparison with the mature variable density topology optimization method,the effectiveness of force cone method is verified.This kind of new method is simple and easy to understand(no need to master complex structural optimization design theory).Besides,it is time-saving in finite element calculations,and can obtain an optimized truss layout easily.By drawing the force cone,its application on a large radio telescope’s back frame structure shows that,compared with the existing one in terms of structural stiffness,Root Mean Square(RMS)precision,and beam stress distribution,the optimized back frame using the force cone method has higher stiffness,better RMS,more uniform stress,and lighter weight. 展开更多

The high-speed winding spindle employs a flexible support system incorporating rubber O-rings.By precisely configuring the structural parameters and the number of the O-rings,the spindle can stably surpass its critical speed points and maintain operational stability across the entire working speed range.However,the support stiffness and damping of rubber O-rings exhibit significant nonlinear frequency dependence.Conventional experimental methods for deriving equivalent stiffness and damping,based on the principle of the forced non-resonance method,require fabricating custom setups for each O-ring specification and conducting vibration tests at varying frequencies,resulting in low efficiency and high costs.This study proposes a hybrid simulation-experimental method for dynamic parameter identification.Firstly,the frequency-dependent dynamic parameters of a specific O-ring support system are experimentally obtained.Subsequently,a corresponding parametric finite element model is established to simulate and solve the equivalent elastic modulus and equivalent stiffness-damping coefficient of this O-ring support system.Ultimately,after iterative simulation,the simulated and experimental results achieve a 99.7%agreement.The parametric finite element model developed herein can directly simulate and inversely estimate frequency-dependent dynamic parameters for O-rings of different specifications but identical elastic modulus. 展开更多

Arc-length-type and energy-type methods are two main strategies used in structural nonlinear tracing analysis, but the former is widely used due to the explicitness and clarity in conception, as well as the convenience and reliability in calculation. It is very important to trace the complete load-deflection path in order to know comprehensively the characteristics of structures subjected to loads. Unfortunately, the nonlinear analysis techniques are only workable for tracing the limit-point-type equilibrium path. For the bifurcation-point-type path, most of them cannot secure a satisfactory result. In this paper, main arc-length-type methods are reviewed and compared, and the possible reasons of failures in tracing analysis are briefly discussed. Some improvements are proposed, a displacement perturbation method and a force perturbation method are presented for tracing the bifurcation-point-type paths. Finally, two examples are analyzed to verify the ideas, and some conclusions are drawn with respect to the arc-length-type methods. 展开更多

Fundamental principles from structural dynamics,random theory and perturbation methods are adopted to develop a new response spectrum combination rule for the seismic analysis of non-classically damped systems,such as structure-damper systems. The approach,which is named the perturbation spectrum method,can provide a more accurate evaluation of a non-classically damped system's mean peak response in terms of the ground response spectrum. To account for the effect of non-classical damping,all elements are included in the proposed method for seismic analysis of structure,which is usually ap-proximated by ignoring the off-diagonal elements of the modal damping matrix. Moreover,as has been adopted in the traditional Complete Quadratic Combination (CQC) method,the white noise model is also used to simplify the expressions of perturbation correlation coefficients. Finally,numerical work is performed to examine the accuracy of the proposed method by comparing the approximate results with exact ones and to demonstrate the importance of the neglected off-diagonal elements of the modal damping matrix. In the examined cases,the proposed method shows good agreement with direct time-history integration. Also,the perturbation spectrum method leads to a more efficient and economical calculation by avoiding the integral and complex operation. 展开更多

A Constrained Interpolation Profile (CIP)-based model is developed to predict the mooring force of a two-dimensional floating oil storage tank under wave conditions, which is validated against to a newly performed experiment. In the experiment, a box-shaped floating oil storage apparatus is used. Computations are performed by an improved CIP-based Cartesian grid model, in which the THINC/SW scheme (THINC: tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing; SW: Slope Weighting), is used for interface capturing. A multiphase flow solver is adopted to treat the water-air-body interactions. The Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) is implemented to treat the body surface. Main attention is paid to the sum force of mooring line and velocity field around the body. It is found that the sum force of the mooring line increases with increasing wave amplitude. The body suffers from water wave impact and large body motions occur near the free surface. The vortex occurs near the sharp edge, i.e., the sharp bottom comers of the float- ing oil storage tank and the vortex shedding can be captured by the present numerical model. The present model could be further improved by including turbulence model which is currently under development. Comparison between the computational mooring forces and the measured mooring forces is presented with a reasonable agreement. The developed numerical model can predict the mooring line forces very well. 展开更多

The resonant features of both tuned and mistuned systems are investigated by using this method under various system coupling strengths, viscous dampings, and dry friction darnpings, etc. The results demonstrate that the proposed multi-harmonic method is very efficient for studying the mistuning effects on the resonant response of bladed disks with blade-to-blade dry friction damping, especially considering the combined effects of various system parameters. 展开更多

Dynamics and vibration of control valves under flow-induced vibration are analyzed. Hydrodynamic load characteristics and structural response under flow-induced vibration are mainly influenced by inertia, damping, elastic, geometric characteristics and hydraulic parameters. The purpose of this work is to investigate the dynamic behavior of control valves in the response to self-excited fluid flow. An analytical and numerical method is developed to simulate the dynamic and vibrational behavior of sliding dam valves, in response to flow excitation. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed model, the simulation results are validated with experimental ones. Finally, to achieve the optimal valve geometry, numerical results for various shapes of valves are compared. Rounded valve with the least amount of flow turbulence obtains lower fluctuations and vibration amplitude compared with the flat and steep valves. Simulation results demonstrate that with the optimal design requirements of valves, vibration amplitude can be reduced by an average to 30%. 展开更多
