It is common for the rotating pin largely plunging into lower sheet to break up lap interface of Friction Stir Lap Welding(FSLW)joint, but the unavoidable up-bending morphology of hook outside Nugget Zone(NZ)largely reduces the joint bearing ability.Based on the novel Opposite-directions Flowing FSLW(OF-FSLW)by the self-developed rotating tool with an Xshaped right-left thread pin,the 2024 aluminum alloys lap joint was successfully welded in this study. The migration law of lap interface during welding was investigated by the experimental and numerical methods, and then how the rotating pin and its rotating velocity affect the formation and strength of OF-FSLW joint was further analyzed. The results show that the Material Concentrated Zone(MCZ)which formed above the original lap interface made the hook bend downward, the NZ greatly enlarged and the beginning part of cold lap compressed and thickened, thereby heightening the joint bearing ability. For the OF-FSLW joint, its maximum tensile strength was403 MPa,and the corresponding joint efficiency of 90.8%was an incredible and superb value for the 2000 series heat-treatment strengthened aluminum alloys friction stir welded joint. The OF-FSLW technology by the rotating tool with an X-shaped right-left thread pin is proven to be a greatly effective approach for manufacturing the aluminum alloys lap joint with superb strength. 展开更多

In this paper,an analytical model that represents the streamwise velocity distribution for open channel flow with submerged flexible vegetation is studied. In the present vegetated flow modelling, the whole flow field has been separated into two layers vertically: a vegetated layer and a non-vegetated free-water layer.Within the vegetated layer,an analysis of the mechanisms affecting water flow through flexible vegetation has been conducted. In the non-vegetated layer,a modified log-law equation that represents the velocity profile varying with vegetation height has been investigated.Based on the studied analytical model,a sensitivity analysis has been conducted to assess the influences of the drag (CD) and friction (Cf ) coefficients on the flow velocity. The investigated ranges of CD and Cf have also been compared to published values. The findings suggest that the CD and Cf values are non-constant at different depths and vegetation densities, unlike the constant values commonly suggested in literature. This phenomenon is particularly clear for flows with flexible vegetation, which is characterised by large deflection. 展开更多

This paper studies some interesting features of two-dimensional granular shearing flow by using molecular dynamic approach for a specific granular system. The obtained results show that the probability distribution function of velocities of particles is Gaussian at the central part, but diverts from Gaussian distribution nearby the wall. The macroscopic stress along the vertical direction has large fluctuation around a constant value, the non-zero average velocity occurs mainly near the moving wall, which forms a shearing zone.. In the shearing movement, the volume of the granular material behaves in a random manner. The equivalent fl'iction coefficient between moving slab and granular material correlates with the moving speed at low velocity, and approaches constant as the velocity is large enough. 展开更多

This paper reports the numerical simulation of the 3D material flow in friction stir welding process by using finite element methods based on solid mechanics. It is found that the material flow behind the pin is much faster than that in front of the pin. The material in front of the pin moves upwards and then rotates with the pin due to the effect of the rotating tool. Behind of the pin, the material moves downwards. This process of material movement is the real cause to make the friction stir welding process continuing successfully. With the increase of the translational velocity or the rotational velocity of the pin, the material flow becomes faster. 展开更多

There are a lot of papers on this problem and a lot of progresses have been made. However, in the most of these papers, just the dynamics contributions of mountain have been analysed; the effect of the friction is often neglected. Since the frictional effect is always associated with flow, especially when it flows over the mountain. The study shows that the friction is small in the magnitude but it is not a negligible effect because it changes the features of the flow. In the case of super-or sub-critical flow, there are two extremes: one maximum, one minimum of the fluid surface on the lee-side of the mountain, while in the inviscid fluid, there is just one extreme. The frictional effect should neither be too strong nor too weak to make the situation happened according to the investigation of this paper. 展开更多

Direct calculations of unsteady-state Weymouth equations for gas volumetric flow rate occur more frequently in the design and operation analysis of natural gas systems. Most of the existing gas pipelines design procedures are based on a particular friction factor and steady-state flow analysis. This paper examined the behavior of different friction factors and the need to develop model analysis capable of calculating unsteady-state gas flow rate in horizontal and inclined pipes. The results show different variation in flow rate with Panhandle A and Panhandle B attaining stability in accurate time with initial unsteadiness at the instance of flow. Chen and Jain friction factors have opposition to flow with high flow rate: The prediction also reveals that Colebrook-White degenerated to Nikuradse friction factor at high Reynolds number. The horizontal and inclined flow equations are considerably enhanced on the usage of different friction factors with the aid of Matlab to handle these calculations. 展开更多

As the Reynolds number increases, the skin friction has been identified as the dominant drag in many practical applications. In the present paper, the effects of the Reynolds number on the mean skin friction decomposition in turbulent channel flows up to Reτ= 5 200 are investigated based on two different methods, i.e., the FukagataIwamoto-Kasagi(FIK) identity(FUKAGATA, K., IWAMOTO, K., and KASAGI, N.Contribution of Reynolds stress distribution to the skin friction in wall-bounded flows.Physics of Fluids, 14(11), L73–L76(2002)) and the Renard-Deck(RD) identity(DECK,S., RENARD, N., LARAUFIE, R., and WEISS, P.′E. Large-scale contribution to mean wall shear stress in high-Reynolds-number flat-plate boundary layers up to Reθ= 13 650.Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 743, 202–248(2014)). The direct numerical simulation(DNS) data provided by Lee and Moser(LEE, M. and MOSER, R. D. Direct numerical simulation of turbulent channel flow up to Reτ≈ 5 200. Journal of Fluid Mechanics,774, 395–415(2015)) are used. For these two skin friction decomposition methods, their decomposed constituents are discussed and compared for different Reynolds numbers. The integrands of the decomposed constituents are locally analyzed across the boundary layer to assess the actions associated with the inhomogeneity and multi-scale nature of turbulent motion. The scaling of the decomposed constituents and their integrands are presented. In addition, the boundary layer is divided into three sub-regions to evaluate the contributive proportion of each sub-region with an increase in the Reynolds number. 展开更多

Interaction between turbulence and particles is investigated in a channel flow. The fluid motion is calculated using direct numerical simulation(DNS) with a lattice Boltzmann(LB) method, and particles are tracked in a Lagrangian framework through the action of force imposed by the fluid. The particle diameter is smaller than the Kolmogorov length scale, and the point force is used to represent the feedback force of particles on the turbulence. The effects of particles on the turbulence and skin friction coefficient are examined with different particle inertias and mass loadings. Inertial particles suppress intensities of the spanwise and wall-normal components of velocity, and the Reynolds shear stress. It is also found that, relative to the reference particle-free flow, the overall mean skin-friction coefficient is reduced by particles. Changes of near wall turbulent structures such as longer and more regular streamwise low-speed streaks and less ejections and sweeps are the manifestation of drag reduction. 展开更多

The rotational tool is put forward, which is composed of the one-spiral-flute shoul- der and the rotational pin with screw. Using the turbulent model of the FLUENT software, material plastic flow behavior during the process of friction stir welding of Ti6A14V alloy is researched by the numerical simulation method and then the effect of rotational tool geometry on material flow during the welding process is attained. The results show that the flow direction of the material near the rotational tool is mainly the same as the rotational direction of the tool while the material near tool flows more violently than the other regions. For the tapered rotational pin, the flow velocity of material inside the workpiece decreases with the increase of the distance away from the workpiece surface because of the change of pin diameter. For the rotational tool, the flute added to the shoulder and the screw added to the pin can greatly increase the flow velocity of material during the welding process while the peak value of the flow velocity of material appears on the flute or the screw. Moreover, the rotational tool with the one-spiral-flute shoulder is better than the tool with the concentric- circles-flute shoulder. Decreasing the width of pin screw and increasing the diameter of pin tip are both good for the increase of flow velocity. 展开更多

Most numerical transient flow models that consider dynamic friction employ a finite differences approach or the method of characteristics. These models assume a single fluid (water only) with constant density and pressure wave velocity. But when transient flow modeling attempts to integrate the presence of air, which produces a variable density and pressure-wave velocity, the resolution scheme becomes increasingly complex. Techniques such as finite volumes are often used to improve the quality of results because of their conservative form. This paper focuses on a resolution technique for unsteady friction using the Godunov approach in a finite volume method employing single-equivalent twophase flow equations. The unsteady friction component is determined by taking into account local and convective instantaneous accelerations and the sign of both convective acceleration and velocity values. The approach is used to reproduce a set of transient flow experiments reported in the literature, and good agreement between simulated and experimental results is found. 展开更多

In exceptional cases, the runout can reach up to tens of kilometers. Even if they are highly destructive and uncontrollable events, they give important insights to understand interactions between the displaced masses and landscape conditions. However, those events are not frequent. Therefore, the analogue and numerical modelling gives fundamental inputs to better understand their behavior. The objective of the research is to understand the propagation and spreading of granular mass released at the top of a simple geometry. The flow is unconfined, spreading freely along a 45° slope and deposit on a horizontal surface. The evolution of this analogue rock avalanche was measured from the initiation to its deposition with high speed camera. To simulate the analogue granular flow, a numerical model based on the continuum mechanics approach and the solving of the shallow water equations was used. In this model, the avalanche is described from a eulerian point of view within a continuum framework as single phase of incompressible granular material. The interaction of the flowing layer with the substratum follows a Mohr-Coulomb friction law. Within same initial conditions (slope, volume, basal friction, height of fall and initial velocity), results obtained with the numerical model are similar to those observed in the analogue. In both cases, the runout of the mass is comparable and the size of both deposits matches well. Moreover, both analogue and numerical modeling gave same magnitude of velocities. In this study, we highlighted the importance of the friction on a flowing mass and the influence of the numerical resolution on the propagation. The combination of the fluid dynamic equation with the frictional law enables the self-channelization and the stop of the granular mass. 展开更多

This paper had investigated the effects of surface wettability on the frictional resistance of turbulent horizontal flow for tap water in five pipes made of various materials and four kinds of liquids in a polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) pipe, with the same inner diameter of 14 mm. Pressure drops were measured under different flow rates through an experimental flow loop. The contact angles and adhesion work of liquids in contact with pipe surfaces were determined using a contact angle meter. Based on the dimension and regression analyses, two kinds of modified relationships between the frictional coefficient and the surface wettability were established according to the measured results corresponding to tap water in five pipes and four liquids in PTFE pipe. The experimental results show that the surface wettability has some influence on frictional coefficient of the studied liquids flowing in macroscale pipes, and the frictional coefficient decreases with the increase of the contact angle at the same Reynolds number. Meanwhile the effect of wettability on the hydrophobic surface is greater than that on the hydrophilic one. The frictional coefficients predicted by the modified formulas have verified to be in good agreement with the experimental values, the relative errors of which are within ±6% and ±3% for the tap water flowing in five different pipes and four kinds of liquids flowing in PTFE pipe, respectively. 展开更多

The material flow in friction stir welded 2014 Al alloy has been investigated using a marker insert technique (MIT). Results of the flow visualization show that the material flow is asymmetrical during the friction stir welding (FSW) process and there are also significant differences in the flow patterns observed on advancing side and retreating side. On advancing side, some material transport forward and some move backward, but on retreating side, material only transport backward. At the top surface of the weld, significant material transport forward due to the action of the rotating tool shoulder. Combining the data from all the markers, a three-dituensional flow visualization, similar to the 3D image reconstruction technique, was obtained. The three-dimensional plot gives the tendency chart of material flow in friction stir welding process and from the plot it can be seen that there is a vertical, circular motion around the longitudinal axis of the weld. On the advancing side of the weld, the material is pushed downward but on the retreating side, the material is pushed toward the crown of the weld. The net result of the two relative motions in both side of the advancing and the retreating is that a circular motion comes into being. Comparatively, the material flow around the longitudinal axis is a secondary motion. 展开更多

A three-dimensional finite volume model was established by the ANSYS FLUENT software to simulate the material flow behavior during the friction stir spot welding (FSSW) process. Effects of the full-threaded pin and the reverse-threaded pin on the material flow behavior were mainly discussed. Results showed that the biggest material flow velocity appeared at the outer edge of the tool shoulder. The velocity value became smaller with the increase of the distance away from the tool surface. In general, material flows downwards along the pin thread when the full-threaded pin is used. Meanwhile, both the materials of the upper and the lower plates flow towards the lap interface along the pin thread when the reverse-threaded pin is used. The numerical simulation results were investigated by experiment, in which 2A12 aluminum alloy was used as the research object. The effective sheet thickness (EST) and stir zone (SZ) width of the joint by the reverse-threaded pin were much bigger than those by the full-threaded pin. Accordingly, cross tension failure load of the joint by the reverse-threaded pin is 23% bigger than the joint by the full-threaded pin. 展开更多

The clear zigzag-line pattern on transverse cross sections can be used to explain the formation mechanism of the weld nugget when friction stir welded AZ31 magnesium alloy without any other insert material is used as mark. It provides a simple and useful method to research the joining mechanism of friction stir welding. The rotation speed is kept at 1000 r/min and the welding speed changes from 120 mm/min to 600 mm/min. The macrostructure on the transverse cross section was divided into several parts by faying surface. The results show that the shape and formation procedure of the weld nugget change with the welding speed. A Jeffery-Hamel (J-H) flow model of the non-Newtonian fluid type inside a convergent wedge (inclined walls) with a wall friction is derived by a nonlinear ordinary differential equation with appropriate boundary conditions based on similarity relationships. Unlike the usual power law model, this paper develops nonlinear viscosity based only on a tangential coordinate function due to the radial geometry shape. Two kinds of solutions are developed, i.e., analytical and semi-analytical (numerical) solutions with suitable assumptions. As a result of the parametric examination, it has been found that the Newtonian normalized velocity gradually decreases with the tangential direction progress. Also, an increase in the friction coefficient leads to a decrease in the normalized Newtonian velocity profile values. However, an increase in the Reynolds number causes an increase in the normalized velocity function values. Additionally, for the small values of wedge semi-angle, the present solutions are in good agreement with the previous results in the literature. 展开更多
