Methods:A total of twenty patients with eighteen males and two females was studied. There were three patients with fractares in the upper one third of thighbone, five with fractures in the middle part of thighbone, six with humeral fractures, three with collarbone fractures,one with ulna fracture and two with thighbone fractures as complication of artificial hipbone arthroplasty. After exposure and fixation of fracture ends, prepared encircled fixer was inserted into 0~4℃ normal reline(NS) to lower its temperature, then pulled out with a clamp. Encircled fixer was put on the tersile side of the fractured bone(center pointed to fracture line), restored and stabilized after raising temperature in 40℃ NS. Results: Encircled fixers of shape memory alloy were used to treat twenty patients with bone fracture.Clinical concrescence was obtained in 1.5 to 3 months after operation,and the joint gained its normal function without complication. Conclusion:Encircled fixer of shape memory alloy has features as exerting vertical pressure continoulsy, little stress shield effect and convenient manipulation, especially adapt to stem fracture after artificial arthroplasty.展开更多

Utilization of biological nitrogen fixation by non symbiotic bacteria offers alternative to reduce the N fertilizer usage. This study was focused to obtain aerobic non symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria from coffee rhizosphere. The application of those bacteria was expected to enhance coffee seedling growth. Sixty four aerobic nitrogen-fixing bacterial isolates were isolated from coffee plants rhizosphere from Jember, East Java using several nitrogen free medium, such as Ashby, malate acid, and fahreus agar. The nitrogen fixation ability of the isolates was determined by measuring their ability in pellicle formation on semi solid medium and ammonium excretion on growth medium. Ab Kws.l, Asm E6s.3.a, Asm Bsl.1, and Asm E6s were the isolates which showed the best performance on nitrogen fixation with excreted ammonium concentration ranged from 129.6 up to 239.8 pM/mg dry weight cell. Acetylene reduction assay was used to detect nitrogenase activity. Ab Kws.1 was the isolate which had the highest nitrogenase activity (7.4 mmol N2 fixed/gram dry weight cell/hour). Inoculation of the four best isolates onto Robusta coffee seedling positively enhanced the seedling growth in this green house experiment. Based on the results of Becton Dickinson's (BD) PhoenixTM Automated Microbiology System biochemical tests, Asm Bls.l isolates has similarities with Achromobacter sp., Asm E6s.l and Asm E6s.3.a had similarities with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, while Ab Kws. 1 had similarities with Leifsonia aquatica.展开更多
Emerging contaminants like metal nanoparticles get introduced into soil through different routes.Toxic effects of these contaminants on plant growth-promoting bacteria(PGPB),which influence plant productivity,can be d...Emerging contaminants like metal nanoparticles get introduced into soil through different routes.Toxic effects of these contaminants on plant growth-promoting bacteria(PGPB),which influence plant productivity,can be detrimental to soil health.Titanium dioxide is one of the most produced nanomaterials in the world and therefore potentially the most released nanoform in soil.The objective of this study was to evaluate the toxic effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles(TiO2 NPs)on plant growth-promoting bacteria.Three types of PGPB,viz.,nitrogen fixers,phosphate solubilizers and biofilm formers were exposed to TiO2 NPs.Our results suggest that direct contact of the bacteria with these NPs is inhibitory as compared to when these bacteria are growing in laboratory nutrient media in the presence of NPs.The inhibitory effect did not follow a linear dose response but instead showed a pronounced step response.Soils with their varying characteristics may not afford the same protection to bacteria as laboratory nutrient media and thus TiO2 NPs may cause some sensitive PGPB to disappear from soil.The resultant shift in bacterial community composition may affect ecosystem functioning.展开更多
