Since its publication in 1887,Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet has become one of the most influential works in detective fiction worldwide, renowned for its innovative narrative techniques, compelling plot, and deep engagement with themes of justice and morality. The novel has seen 311 Chinese publications, among which two translations stand out:Xieluoke Qian Kaichan translated by Lin Shu and Wei Yi in late Qing dynasty in 1914 and Xuezi Yanjiu, transalted by Ding Zhonghu and Yuan Dihua in the Reform and Opening-up era in 1981.This study examines these two significant Chinese translations from a narrative theory perspective.Lin’s version employs classical allusions and imaginative language, frequently uses internal focalization to enhance reader involvement, incorporates rhetorical embellishments, and reinterprets speeches through adaptation to intensify emotional and plot dynamics. In contrast,Din’s translation adopts vernacular language complemented by explanatory notes to provide cultural context, maintains the original focalization patterns, favors direct translation of dialogues to preserve stylistic authenticity, and adheres closely to the linear narrative structure of the source text. This study not only describes the different translation strategies across two defining historical periods but also contributes to a deeper understanding of how narrative voice, cultural positioning, and reader engagement are negotiated in the translation of classic detective fiction. 展开更多

The imagination of the social form has been an important theme in the 21st century Chinese science fictions. The imagination of a social form on the model of"Elder's dual vector foil"contains a logical asymmetry-high-level technology and a primary social form. From the perspective of historical materialism and dialectics, this imagination and other imaginations of the social form, such as intelligent algorithms, that internally dominate or distort the social form through technology, reveal its flaws and limitations.Compared to the imagination of specific technology, the imagination of social form emphasizes the entirety and connection of multiple social factors, and it is hard to thoroughly dispense the invisible dominance of existing human experience.Marxist theory and methodology are indispensable to the imagination of social form in science fiction.Reigniting the Marxist critical imagination of future social form and activating the aesthetic power of this imagination are the future directions of the development of science fiction. 展开更多

Joanna Page is Director of CRASSH and Professor of Latin American Studies at the University of Cambridge. Her research interests are generally connected to the relationship between science and culture in Latin America. She has also worked on questions of memory, modernity, capitalism, posthumanism, new materialism, decoloniality, ecology, and environmental thought. This interview covers three main aspects:the characteristics of science fiction texts in Latin America, the interdisciplinary research models at the intersection of science, literature, and art,and Latin America as a field of regional studies.Professor Page starts with Argentine science fiction novels and expands the discussion to include graphic novels in Latin America, outlining the panorama of science fiction and its indigenous features. The conversation delves into the literary and technological relationships within Latin American science fiction texts.Building upon this foundation, this interview explores the interdisciplinary research paradigms concerning the relationship between science and culture, aiming to contribute to regional studies by exploring new pathways for interdisciplinary,cross-regional,and trans-media research. 展开更多

Fostering Student Metaphorical Thinking in EFL Reading Classes Through the Method of Constructing a Text Associative-Semantic Field

The present study explores the importance of developing metaphorical thinking skills in students within the framework of English as a Foreign Language(EFL)reading courses at the tertiary educational level.Metaphorical thinking is viewed as the ability to envisage the world figuratively, perceive associatively, and express oneself creatively. It is crucial to recognize metaphors in texts, interpret the complex images they evoke, and generate new metaphors. It is especially needful in the current era of clip thinking and fragmented information processing when students often approach content superficially rather than comprehensively, leading to decreased cognitive activity and a diminished capacity to understand literature. To foster metaphorical thinking, the paper suggests building a text associative-semantic field focusing on metaphors.Due to its hierarchical structure, which can be envisioned as a dense nucleus surrounded by a central region of synonyms and further enveloped by a periphery of more loosely associated linguistic units, the text associative-semantic field is seen as a potent solution for facilitating improved visualization and more holistic comprehension of information, allowing students for expanding their vocabulary and strengthening associative connections.Notably, the study highlights analyzing the metaphors of emotional states as they contribute significantly to a more profound interpretation of the text, understanding the writer’s unique style, deepening the students’engagement with the book, and expanding their emotional experiences. 展开更多

In the contemporary context of increasingly severe global ecological crises, literary works have gradually emerged as essential media through which humanity reflects on the relationship between the natural environment and human civilization.Within this trend,Japanese science fiction has produced a growing body of works that engage with ecological issues.Taking the Japanese science fiction novel The Palace of the Flower Dragons as a case study, this paper employs the theoretical framework of ecocriticism to examine the text across three dimensions-natural,social,and spiritual ecology. It investigates how the novel uses apocalyptic narrative strategies to explore the human-nature relationship and to articulate an ecological ethic of coexistence grounded in a non-anthropocentric worldview, thereby offering meaningful literary reference points for addressing real-world environmental crises. 展开更多
