The technique of ferrography has been applied to study the wear particles in synovial fluid of human knee joints. As a result some discrete, identifiable kinds of wear particles were found and various wear mechanisms, for example, adhesive wear, fatigue wear, etc. were revealed. A technique for wear particle identification using computer vision system is described. The computer vision system employs LVQ Neural Networks as classifier to recognize the surface texture of wear particles in lubricating oil and determine the conditions of machines. The recognition process includes four stages:(1)capturing image from ferrographies containing wear particles;(2) digitising the image and extracting features;(3) learning the training data selected from the feature data set;(4) identifying the wear particles and generating the result report of machine condition classification. To verify the technique proposed here, the recognition results of several typical classes of wear particles generated at the sliding and rolling surfaces in a diesel engine are presented. 展开更多

The properties of lubricant filters in diesel engines directly affect operation of the lubricant system, and lubricant filters are apt to be impacted by many factors. Therefore, scientific and sensible methods evaluating the properties for lubricant filter diesel engines are necessary to monitor filter properties on line and dynamically. This paper applies ferrographic techniques and adopts sampling methods that oil specimens are synchronously obtained in front of and behind filter elements to monitor the filters of ISUZU DA-220 diesel engine in two FD50 forklifts. Results show that the combination of ferrographic techniques and above sampling methods is effective in analyzing the whole operating process of filters used in diesel engines. The service life and ruined type of filter can be estimated through the relationship between ferrographic readings in front and behind of filter and operation time. Furthermore, through a great deal of tests, a series of experimental curves of readings and time and characteristic parameters for filters used in different machines can be gained, which has guiding significance to the selection and maintenance of the filters. But because of the limitation of the ferrographic technique, the debris on the substrate prevents determination of sizes. It is difficult to judge accurately the size of debris that a filter can filter. 展开更多

A newly developed on-line visual ferrograph(OLVF) gives a new way for engine wear state monitoring. However, the reliability of on-line wear debris image processing is challenged in both monitoring ship engines and the Caterpillar bench test, which weren't reported in previous studies. Two problems were encountered in monitoring engines and processing images. First, small wear debris becomes hard to be identified from the image background after monitoring for a period of time. Second, the identification accuracy for wear debris is greatly reduced by background noise because of oil getting dark after nmning a period of time. Therefore, the methods adopted in image processing are examined. Two main reasons for the problems in wear debris identification are generalized as follows. Generally, the binary threshold was determined by global image pixels, and was easily affected by the non-objective zone in the image. The boundary of the objective zone in the binary image was misrecognized because of oil color becoming lighter during monitoring. Accordingly, improvements were made as follows. The objective zone in a global binary image was identified by scanning a column of pixels, and then a secondary binary process confined in the objective zone was carried out to identify small wear debris. Linear filtering with a specific template was used to depress noise in a binary image, and then a low-pass filtering was performed to eliminate the residual noise. Furthermore, the morphology parameters of single wear debris were extracted by separating each wear debris by a gray stack, and two indexes, WRWR (relative wear rate) and WRWS (relative wear severity), were proposed for wear description. New indexes were provided for on-line monitoring of engines. 展开更多

In order to improve an on-line ferrograph, this paper simulates a three-dimensional magnetic field distribution of an electromagnet, builds a sinking motion model of a wear particle, and investigates the motion law of wear particles under two different conditions. Both numeric results and experimental results show that the on-line ferrograph is capable of monitoring machine wear conditions by measuring the concentration and size distribution of wear particles in lubricating oil. 展开更多

The oil sample of the experiments has been collected from slip diesel en-gines. The data of the experiments has been analyzed based on grey relative analysis and relativeorder. The result of grey relative analysis shows that the effect of the dilution ratio of the oil sampleis the most key factor, in which the volume and the dilution ratio of the oil sample, and the effect ofthe rotation speed of the magnetic disc on the deposition state of wear particles are investigated. This conclusion is in accordance with the orthogonal experiment based on the same oil sample. Itprovides a new practical method for ferrographic experimental analysis. 展开更多
