Burundi faces major agricultural constraints, including land fragmentation, soil erosion, limited access to inputs, inadequate infrastructure and demographic pressures that exacerbate food insecurity. In order to address the multiple challenges faced by farmers in rural areas, a study on improving agricultural productivity and food security in Burundi through optimized land use and diversified farming practices in agroforestry systems has been carried out. The study area is the communes of Giheta and Rutegama, all located in Burundi’s humid plateau livelihood zone, and involved 164 households grouped in coffee growing cooperatives supervised by the cooperative consortium COCOCA. The study uses a mathematical programming model to determine optimal crop selection based on factors such as production costs, yields and market demand. The findings of the study revealed significant insights into the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the sampled population. Notably, 98.8% of respondents were engaged in agriculture, confirming the predominantly agricultural nature of Burundi. The results indicated that maize is the most important crop, occupying 33.9% of the average total cultivated area, followed by cassava at 26.5% and bananas at 19.4%. Together, these three crops accounted for a substantial portion of the total cultivated area, highlighting their significance in local agriculture. Beans and potatoes also play a role, occupying 14.4% and smaller areas, respectively. In terms of profitability, the study provides a detailed analysis of profit margins by crop. Bananas emerges as the most profitable crop, with a profit margin of 97.3%, followed closely by cassava at 96.1% and rice at 90.5%. These crops not only offered substantial yields relative to their production costs but also benefited from strong market demand. Other crops, such as beans (71.3%), coffee (70.3%), and vegetables (54.5%), also demonstrated considerable profitability, although they occupied smaller cultivated areas. Conversely, crops like pigeon peas (4.1%), potatoes (7.6%), and sweet potatoes (7.6%) exhibited the lowest profit margins, which may discourage farmers from investing in them unless other incentives, such as ecological benefits or local consumption needs, are present. Regarding the results, we therefore recommend to promote policies supporting agroforestry, improve market access and develop infrastructure to exploit these benefits. 展开更多

A total of 43 people were interviewed using well-structured questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive methods. The results showed that local Lagoon breeders are divided into two zones: southwest and southeast. Breeders in the south-western region are generally located in two sub-prefectures of the Tabou Department (Grabo and Oulodio). Tabou’s department alone accounts for 42% of the Lagoon breed in Côte d’Ivoire. Agriculture in this area is traditionally sedentary, practiced for social reasons. On the other hand, the south-eastern zone, located in the departments of Aboisso, Adzopé, Agboville, Grand-Lahou, Jacqueville, Abidjan, Dabou and Sikensi, represents 58% of the Lagoon breeding area in Côte d’Ivoire. This second group is characterised by improved breeding. Most of the farmers interviewed in this zone breed for economic reasons. However, the risk of cross-breeding, which already affects the local Lagoon breed, could be increased by the presence of other species such as the Zebu and Ndamas, or even the Baoulé, in this south-eastern herd. 展开更多

This study was designed to determine factors that influence market performance of avocado fruits among smallholder farmers in Mbeya and Songwe regions. A cross section research design entailing 209 farmers from five (5) districts of two (2) regions and 15 key informants;5 local service providers (LSP), 5 traders/brokers and 5 district extension officers (DEO) were involved in the study. Random selection procedures were used to select avocado producers and purposive selection procedures were used to select key informants. The study employed survey questionnaires to collect data from avocado farmers and structured interview to collect data from key informants. Collected data were analyzed with an aid of descriptive statistics and linear regression model was used to determine significant factors that determine market prices of avocado fruits among smallholder farmers. The demographic characteristics of avocado farmers showed that;61.2% of farmers had age between 36 to 59 years old, 84.7% were married, 74.6% had primary education level, average number of 5 members of the family, average 4.3 acres of owned land and 1.8 acres planted with avocado. Moreover, findings showed that 90.9% grew improved avocado varieties. Farm gate (88.5%) was the major market outlet chosen by avocado farmers. Local merchants and processors were the major buyers of the produced avocado. Results from linear regression analysis showed that variety grown (P P P P < 0.05) were factors that statistically influenced market prices for avocado fruits. The study concluded that despite the remarkable contributions to livelihood of the farmers yet, it is highly fragile on market prices. Therefore, the study recommends the need to establish market systems that will govern avocado fruits marketing for sustainability of the sub-sector. 展开更多

Continuously broadening the channels for farmers’income growth and effectively narrowing the urban-rural income gap is the central task in the new development stage to comprehensively promote rural revitalization and achieve the common prosperity of farmers and rural areas. The promotion of rural e-commerce and the enhancement of farmers’digital skills provide potential for this endeavor.Taking Zhejiang province,a demonstration area for common prosperity,as the research object, this study collected 1,119 valid questionnaires through field surveys.Based on the reconstruction of a comprehensive evaluation index for farmers’digital skills using principal component analysis, this paper further investigates the relationship between the level of farmers’digital skills and their income by employing the CRITIC weighting method, mediating mechanism testing, and grouped regression analysis. The research finds that improving digital skills can significantly enhance farmers’income levels, with the income growth effect being more pronounced among older groups with lower educational levels and limited digital skills.Digital skills not only directly promote farmers’income growth but also indirectly further enhance their income level by increasing their use of rural e-commerce,and thus the use of rural e-commerce serves as a significant mediating variable in the relationship between digital skills and farmers’income growth. These conclusions remain valid after a series of robustness tests, including endogeneity tests, the replacement of weight designs for digital skills, and the exclusion of outlier samples. Finally, the paper proposes policy recommendations such as offering more digital skills and e-commerce training, encouraging the return of new rural elites to promote regional clusters of rural e-commerce,and providing targeted policy support for the development of rural e-commerce. 展开更多

Many policymakers have recognized rural digitalization as an emerging strategy to improve farmers’well-being.However,in the context of China, whether digital village construction is an effective and long-term way to achieve farmers’common prosperity has not been thoroughly explored. This study aims to construct a theoretical analysis framework for the impact of digital village construction on farmers’common prosperity and provide new empirical evidence from dynamic and spatial perspectives. The results indicated that China’s digital village construction effectively promoted the farmers’common prosperity, and agricultural productive service and agricultural science and technology innovation are significant mediating mechanisms. However,it is not yet long-term,as the marginal effect of digital village construction is diminishing. The spatial spillover effect of digital village construction is also more obvious than its direct effect.Digital village construction consistently plays a stronger enabling role in the western region and provinces with better conditions for agriculture. The results suggest that digital village construction in China can effectively reduce regional disparities. But establishing a long-term driving mechanism for digital village construction on farmers’common prosperity is another novel and pressing task that requires urgent attention. 展开更多

Agricultural insurance plays a key role in promoting the coordinated development of green agriculture and farmers’income growth, which is crucial for China’s high-quality agricultural development.Using the coupling coordination degree model, this study empirically demonstrates that the development of agricultural insurance significantly promotes the coordinated development of green agriculture and farmers’income growth once a certain threshold is exceeded. This effect is more pronounced in the major grain-producing regions and the central provinces.Expanding the scale of agricultural production and increasing investment in agricultural technology are the key mechanisms through which agricultural insurance supports the dual goals of green agriculture and income growth in China. In conclusion, this study proposes several policy recommendations, which include increasing investment in agricultural insurance infrastructure, strengthening the policy guidance for agricultural insurance, and designing differentiated agricultural insurance policies. 展开更多

The development of digital villages and the expansion of farmers’consumption are important measures for expanding domestic demand and enhancing rural productive forces.Based on provincial panel data from China spanning 2010 to 2022,this paper establishes an evaluation indicator system for the development of digital villages, and empirically examines the impact of the development of digital villages on farmers’consumption growth,as well as its mechanisms, and spatial spillover effects. The results indicate that digital village development significantly promotes growth in the consumption of farmers, with the effects being more pronounced in the central and western regions.Mechanism analysis reveals that digital village development has a significant income-increasing effect and it improves the convenience of payments, both of which serve as important channels for promoting farmers’consumption growth.Further analysis demonstrates the significant spatial spillover effects of digital village development on farmers’consumption growth.Specifically, farmers’consumption growth is not only directly influenced by local digital village development and the demonstration effect of consumption growth in neighboring regions, but it is also indirectly influenced by the digital village development of nearby areas. Therefore, the promotion of digital village development, tailored to local conditions, the broadening of channels for increasing farmers’income, the strengthening of digital inclusive finance, and the rational leveraging of the spatial spillover effects of digital village development can further unleash the potential of farmers’consumption. 展开更多

In the information age,the movement of livelihood factors between urban and rural areas, particularly involving farmers in rural tourism destinations, has stimulated the spatial revitalization and functional renewal of these destinations, thereby facilitating the advancement of rural revitalization. The examination of livelihood strategy selection among farmers in rural tourist destinations during the information age is a critical scientific inquiry for the sustainable development of rural tourism. This research holds substantial significance for enhancing the livelihood capabilities of farmers and contributing to the revitalization of rural industries. This study utilizes Xijiang Miao Village as a case study to conduct an in-depth analysis of farmers’livelihood strategy selection through the application of the entropy evaluation method and the binary logistic regression model. The findings indicate that the robust development of rural tourism has led to significant alterations in the original composition of livelihood capital in tourist destinations.Currently, four distinct types of livelihoods have been identified:agricultural-based,migrantwork-oriented,tourism-specialized,and tourism-supplemented.Due to the uneven distribution of livelihood capital, the predominant livelihood modes for farmers in rural tourism destinations remain the agricultural-based and tourism-supplemented types.Human capital and economic capital are the primary factors influencing the strategic choices made by farmers. In this context,a livelihood selection strategy for farmers in rural tourist destinations, specifically in Xijiang Miao Village,is proposed, taking into account the background of rural informatization. 展开更多

Diversity in the biophysical and socio-economic attributes of agricultural systems makes them uniquely niche based. Farmers are expert in local biophysical and socio-economic situations and can contribute in developing pragmatic indicators of agro-environmental development. During evaluation of an agricultural research project in Yunnan, China, local farmers were capable of evaluating the effects of modified technologies on existing cropping systems and discussed their attitudes to the interventions using their own indicators. Farmers' response can be grouped into seven major aspects: i) effects on income, ii) effects on production resources, iii) effects on crop management, iv) existing local knowledge about the technology, v) availability of inputs, vi) access to information, and vii) socio-economic conditions of farming households. Farmers concluded that environmental conditions in the experimental catchment in comparison to an adjacent untreated catchment were better in terms of soil and water losses, vegetation cover and natural resources, infrastructures and catchment management, use of environmentally-friendly technologies, and crop productivity. Success in soil and water conservation programmes depends on the efforts of the farmers and other local users and their greater involvement helps to identify more pragmatic indicators. Furthermore, it increases ownership of the programme, enhances interactions with the project scientists, increases farmers' awareness of ago-environmental problems and their possible consequences. These development will enable scientists to develop better targeted interventions and increase the likelihood of adoption of tested technologies by local communities. The use of paired adjacent catchments improved evaluation activities and is proposed as good practice for future catchment improvement programmes. 展开更多

Reasons for the initiation of farming systems/participatory approaches in non-Green Revolution(i.e., in more heterogeneous and less favourable production environments) areas in low-income countries is followed by a discussion of their evolution.Four phases are described along, with a brief description of some of the significant methods in which farmer participation has been sought, accessed and evaluated. They enabled/facilitated the evolutionary process.Although, over the last 40 years there has been a progress in making small-scale farmers much more visible in driving the agricultural research/development agenda through using the four basic stages embodied in the farming systems approach(i.e., descriptive, diagnosis, testing/evaluation and finally dissemination), much still needs to be done. This leads on to a discussion as to some of the barriers still inhibiting true farmer empowerment and why further, such empowerment is imperative, if the agricultural challenges of this century are to be addressed successfully, namely substantially increasing agricultural productivity in an ecologically sustainable manner.Given the heterogeneity of the production environments and that many identified improvements are likely to be incremental rather than revolutionary in nature, this will require farmers' intimate involvement in their identification, evaluation and dissemination.Discussion in the paper recognizes that there is increasing globalization/commercialization of agriculture and is predicated on the need to consider the whole farmer-research-development continuum involving multiple stakeholders(i.e., farmers, scientists, extension workers, input/output service providers and policymakers).Such a continuum has been explicitly recognized in the operational plans for the recently reformed international agricultural research(i.e., CGIAR) system. The paper concludes with a short discussion on the potential role of formal modelling. 展开更多
