Charophytic algae and land plants together make up a monophyletic group, streptophytes, which represents one of the main lineages of multicellular eukaryotes and has contributed greatly to the change of the environment on earth in the Phanerozoic Eon. Significant progress has been made to understand phylogenetic relationships among members of this group by phylogenetic studies of morphological and molecular data over the last twenty-five years. Mesostigma viride is now regarded as among the earliest diverging unicellular organisms in streptophytes. Characeae are the sister group to land plants. Liverworts represent the first diverging lineage of land plants. Hornworts and lycophytes are extant representatives of bryophytes and vascular plants, respectively, when early land plants changed from gametophyte to sporophyte as the dominant generation in the life cycle. Equisetum, Psilotaceae, and ferns constitute the monophyletic group of monilophytes, which are sister to seed plants. Gnetales are related to conifers, not to angiosperms as previously thought. Amborella, Nymphaeales, Hydatellaceae, Illiciales, Trimeniaceae, and Austrobaileya represent the earliest diverging lineages of extant angiosperms. These phylogenetic results, together with recent progress on elucidating genetic and developmental aspects of the plant life cycle, multicellularity, and gravitropism, will facilitate evolutionary developmental studies of these key traits, which will help us to gain mechanistic understanding on how plants adapted to environmental challenges when they colonized the land during one of the major transitions in evolution of life. 展开更多

Exploring the spatial evolution patterns of land use in creative urban tourism complexes provides theoretical and decision-making support to foster creative tourism projects. This study focuses on the Hangzhou Leisure Expo Garden as a case study, utilizing a land use change index model to analyze the spatial evolution characteristics and dynamic processes of creative urban tourism complexes,as well as to explore their spatial differentiation mechanisms. The analysis indicates that Hangzhou Leisure Expo Garden, initially a derelict industrial area dominated by production and residential land use,has evolved into a creative urban tourism complex with tourism comprehensive service land at its core, going through the pattern evolution processes of“constrained sprawl,”“intensive expansion,”and“random integration.”From the perspective of tourism human-land relationships, the formation of land use evolution patterns in creative urban tourism complexes results from various stakeholders(government, tourism enterprises, residents, tourists, etc.),as humanistic factors, continuously adapting to specific urban spaces, which are considered as geographical elements and have locational advantages and are oriented towards economic and social values.Based on the acquisition of stakeholder interests, the transformation of resource-disadvantaged areas into tourism advantage areas is facilitated, thereby achieving the re-creation of tourism creative space and promoting intensive spatial growth. 展开更多

The purpose of this study was to find out the spatial-temporal rules and driving force of cultivated land quality in Henan Province in the last ten years. Agricultural land grading factor evaluation was used to evaluate the cultivated land quality of 2002 and 2012 in Henan Province, and to research the change laws. Method of correlation coefficient was employed to select the driving forces affecting cultivated land quality evolution. The results indicated that the cultivated land quality in Henan Province increased slightly in the last ten years in general, and in spatial there were unchanged regions, increased regions and decreased regions. The cultivated land quality in spatial presented the trend of good becoming better, bad becoming worse, which should be highly valued in cultivated land quality protection and management. Land development and consolidation projects had significant contributions to increasing the cultivated land quality. Driving forces between the sudden change regions and gradual change regions were significantly different. The paper concluded that the research on the spatial-temporal evolution and driving force of cultivated land quality based on cultivated land quality evolution had important academic significance and practical value. 展开更多

The evolution of active stomatal closure in response to leaf water deficit, mediated by the hormone abscisic acid (ABA), has been the subject of recent debate. Two different models for the timing of the evolution of this response recur in the literature. A single-step model for stomatal control suggests that stomata evolved active, ABA- mediated control of stomatal aperture, when these structures first appeared, prior bryophyte and vascular plant gradualistic model for stomatal to the divergence of neages. In contrast, a control proposes that the most basal vascular plant stomata responded passively to changes in leaf water status. This model suggests that active ABA-driven mechanisms for stomatal responses to water status instead evolved after the divergence of seed plants, culminating in the complex, ABA-mediated responses observed in modern angiosperms. Here we review the findings that form the basis for these two models, including recent work that provides critical molecular insights into resolving this intriguing debate, and find strong evidence to support a gradualistic model for stomatal evolution. 展开更多

This study investigated oasis evolution and the changes of peripheral desert in the Sangong River Basin since the 1950 s by rebuilding seven land cover maps derived from black-and-white aerial photographs(1958, 1968, and 1978), a color-infrared aerial photograph(1987), Landsat Thematic Mapper(TM) imagery(1998), Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre(SPOT) imagery(2004), and Landsat Operational Land Imager(OLI) imagery(2014). The results showed that:(1) Since 1950, the oasis consecutively expanded more than four times from an alluvial fan to an alluvial plain, causing the shrinkage of desert landscapes that were dominated by a Haloxylon ammodendron Bunge community(HBC) and a Tamarix chinensis Lour community(TLC). Furthermore, the primary(1958–1968) and final(2004– 2014) stages were the most important periods, during which agricultural land experienced the most rapid expansion during the period 1958–1968, and the built-up area showed the most rapid expansion after the 2000 s.(2) Two basic management modes, a "local mode" formed by the local governments and a "farm management mode" developed by Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, together promoted oasis evolution under various land-use and landcover(LULC) stages.(3) The evolution of the modern oasis during the 1950s–2004 showed the general features of an arid oasis, while during the period of 2004–2014 it was characterized by a large-scale inter-basin water diversion or the import of new water sources.(4) The oasis expanded at the expense of desert vegetation, resulting in distinct variation in the structure of the desert plant community, which will make it more difficult to protect the desert ecosystem. 展开更多

Ecological land(Eco-land) is a basic resource for human beings to survive, and eco-land use is a strategy, a way to manage the land resource. So, ecologically-sustainable land use is essential for human beings to survive. This paper investigates the spatiotemporal characteristics and mechanisms of urban-rural eco-land using a new and innovative integration way based on eco-land change data in China's Loess Plateau(LP) prefecture level cities and explores factors of eco-land change. The spatial difference characteristic of eco-land among different level cities in the LP is that: small cities > big cities > middle cities. From 2009 to 2016, the eco-land in the LP from the perspective of urban-rural areas has changed significantly. Significant differences of urban-rural eco-land were identified among various urban growth types, and all the cities in the LP were further classified into four types based on eco-land change trend, with type A and B cities identified as the vital zone and major zone. Taking the eco-fragile region Loess Plateau(LP) as an example, our results demonstrated that the migrants to cities in LP could relieve ecological pressures and promote restoration of ecological vegetation. We have demonstrated that urbanization and the influence of government policy can be discerned through the quantification of the spatial-temporal change of eco-land and suggest that combining both urban and rural eco-land can support more effective land use decisions and provide theoretical basis for the practical application of urban planning, policy-making and sustainable development. What's more, governments should strive to population mobility and restore vegetation to sustain this fragile ecological environment. 展开更多

Plants employ multifaceted mechanisms to fight with numerous pathogens in nature.Resistance(R)genes are the most effective weapons against pathogen invasion since they can specifically recognize the corresponding pathogen effectors or associated protein(s)to activate plant immune responses at the site of infection.Up to date, over 70 R genes have been isolated from various plant species. Most R proteins contain conserved motifs such as nucleotide-binding site(NBS),leucine-rich repeat(LRR),Toll-interleukin-1 receptor domain(TIR,homologous to cytoplasmic domains of the Drosophila Toll protein and the manamalian intefleukin-1 receptor),coiled-coil(CC)or leucine zipper(LZ)structure and protein kinase domain(PK).Recent results indicate that these domains play significant roles in R protein interactions with effector proteins from pathogens and in activating signal transduction pathways involved in innate immunity. This review highlights an overview of the recent progress in elucidating the structure, function and evolution of the isolated R genes in different plant-pathogen interaction systems. 展开更多

Taking social statistic data as basic data, this paper extended the meaning of urban land uses, highlighted the meaning of urban land uses in modern urbanization, which includes direct, indirect and induced land uses, quantitatively simulated the indirect and induced land uses by the substitution method of agricultural consumption and urban carbon emission and then, analyzed the spatiotemporal evolution of urban land uses in China during 1952–2005 by spatial analysis tool of Geographic Information System. The results indicate that the area of urban land use in China had been increasing since 1952,showing an inversed pyramid structure,i.e.,the direct<the indirect<the induced. Specifically,Chinese urban land use has changed from concentrated distribution in Northwest China to balanced spatial distribution, and the eastern coastal area is under great pressure. Moreover, the northeastern region has moved into the induced dominant stage, while the western region remains at the indirect dominant stage. Finally,it is proposed that in order to guarantee the future demand of urban land use in China, ensuring the induced land use in the eastern region should be taken as a priority goal of Chinese developing policy. 展开更多

In China, rural settlements are usually multifunctional complex of natural societies and they also play important productive function. This study explored the spatiotemporal evolution of the productive function of three rural settlements, i.e.,Hetaoyuan, Dawengshan, and Gaoqiao, in the Yimeng Mountain in Shandong province of eastern China.Residents lived in this three types of rural settlements were all involved in agricultural production(i.e., grain threshing, drying and storage), which had remained dominant in Hetaoyuan. Dawengshan became an industrial-oriented settlement, while Gaoqiao became a commercial-oriented settlement. This evolution was reflected in the livelihood strategy changes of rural households and the transition of rural settlements changes. The choice of livelihood strategy was affected by the livelihood assets and policies, which resulted in the spatiotemporal evolution of the productive function of rural settlements. This study can provide references for the implementation and adjustment of rural residential land consolidation policies and the improvement of production and the quality of rural life in future. 展开更多

Constant divisions of rural land rights and contract renegotiations are the hallmark of China’s collective ownership system.Rural land ownership, property and operation systems in China have experienced four stages of evolution:(i)The People’s Communes, which served administrative and economic functions, exercised integrated collective land ownership, property, and operation rights.(ii)Under the system of“threetier ownership with production teams as basic accounting units,”production teams exercised the ownership right over land plots with greater autonomy and were responsible for organizing farm work.(iii)The household contract system has entitled farmers to claim surplus products and turned farm households into the basic unit of agricultural production.Subsequently, the reform of collective ownership has further enhanced farmers’contract rights and separated their operation rights from contract rights. The separation of rural land ownership, contract and operation rights marks a top-down design of the structure of China’s rural land rights after the collective ownership system and the reform of household contract system.By recognizing separate contract and operation rights without changing collective ownership, the separation aims to protect rural land contract and operation rights in accordance with the law.As in the four case studies,Chongzhou,Songjiang,Meitan and Liupanshui have experienced a restructuring of collective ownership, contract and operation rights.Their experience foretells complexities in the future evolution of rural land rights in China. 展开更多

China's land institution can be defined broadly or narrowly. By examining the broad definition of the land institution, we found that there were prerequisite, complementary, and substitutional relationships among the various systems. These relationships were verified through discussion of the structural evolution of each system. Based on these relationships, three methods for quantification were used to measure the regulation intensity and intra-provincial differences in each system among 31 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in China in 2014. The statistics analysis shows that provinces used to pursue outstanding performances in land institution but few provinces could outperform the other provinces in all types of systems. The statistics results also indicate that the provinces which executed land institution earlier often hold significant advantages in institutional innovations but it is still not clear whether they can maintain the advantages. This study recommends that the Chinese government should improve the overall framework of regional land institution based on land systems' relationships and evolutionary patterns. Furthermore, the government should optimize the spatial distribution of regional land institution based on the intra-provincial differences in land-regulation intensity. 展开更多

GIS spatial analysis and quantitative analysis of landscape indexes were applied to analyze land use features and influence factors of rural settlements in Panshi City, Jilin Province in view of the comprehensive regional environment. The results showed that (A) Rural settlements are mostly scattered, and concentrated in small groups, showing the co-existence and disorderly expansion of modern and traditional development features; (B) Layouts of rural settlements are closely related to agricultural production; (C) Rural settlements are mostly distributed in the linear patterns along rivers and in the ring patterns around reservoirs; (D) Distribution of rural settlements gradually expands to the neighboring areas of traffic arteries. Against the macro background of urbanization, studying the intensive utilization of rural settlements is a fundamental approach of relieving restriction of land elements, and also an important approach of promoting the construction of new socialist countryside, optimizing industrial structure and accelerating regional urbanization. 展开更多

Mutants lacking wild-type MLO(Mildew resistance Locus O)proteins show broad-spectrum resistance to the powdery mildew fungus, and dysregulated cell death control, with spontaneous cell death in response to developmental or abiotic stimuli. In order to understand the evolution and divergence patterns of the MLO gene family in Rosaceae plants,we analysed systematically genome-wide data from Fragaria vesca,Prunus persica,Prunus mume,Malus domestica,Pyrus bretschneideri and Rubus occidentalis based on bioinformatics methods.Using three phylogenetic methods(the neighbour-joining,maximum likelihood, and Bayesian methods),we identified 117 MLO genes from 6 Rosaceae species. The results of all three phylogenetic analysis methods supported that these genes were divided into six clades.Conserved motif analysis found that only motif 2 was present in all MLO proteins and had 3 nearly invariant amino acid residues. The findings indicated that motif 2 might be shared by the MLO gene family. The structural features of these genes showed large variations in sequence length among different species, although the lengths and the numbers of exons exhibited high degrees of similarity.Selective pressure analysis showed extremely significant differences in all 6 clades, with 2,1,and 1 site(s)under significant positive selection detected in clades III,IV,and VI,respectively. These positive selection sites were important driving forces for the promotion of the functional differentiation of the MLO genes.Functional divergence analysis showed that the significantly divergent sites were located within the domains of the MLO genes.Functional distance analysis showed that the clade V had more conservative functions and might have retained more original functions during the evolutionary process. However, clade I may have undergone extensive altered functional constraints as a specialised functional role. Moreover, the most original function of the MLO genes in Rosaceae could be related to the evolution of their resistance to powdery mildew, which then gradually evolved into functions such as the regulation of flower development, the control of root morphology, and seed evolution due to the different evolutionary rates after gene duplication. These results provide a theoretical basis for further studies of the molecular evolutionary patterns of the plant MLO gene family. 展开更多

Since China’s reform and opening up in 1978,the acceleration of industrialization and urbanization in China had led to dramatic changes in the pattern of urban-rural land use.In this paper,we focused on the rural industrialized areas in central China(Xinxiang County and Changyuan City of Henan Province). We used the average nearest neighbor index, spatial statistical analysis, and a structural equation model to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution and influencing factors of urban-rural construction land based on multisource spatial data and survey data. The results showed that:1)from 1975 to 2019,the spatial distribution of urban-rural construction land in rural industrialized areas had evolved from homogeneous distribution to local agglomeration. In terms of comparative analysis of cases, the spatial distribution of urban-rural construction land in Changyuan City had shown a trend from diffusion to agglomeration, and Xinxiang County had overall shown a spatial change from homogenization to agglomeration and then to regional integration development.2)The hot spots with increased urban-rural construction land significantly expanded, and they had a high degree of spatial overlap with industrial development.Among them,Xinxiang County was concentrated in central and marginal areas, and Changyuan was mainly concentrated in central urban areas.3)From the evolution of spatial proximity of urban-rural construction land, rural industrialized areas generally decline, showing the characteristics of internal differentiation in the rate of change.4)Industrial development, social economy, the policy environment, and urban development played a positive role in promoting the expansion of urban-rural construction land in rural industrialized areas. To promote the optimal use of regional land and the integrated development of urban-rural areas,we should combine the advantages of regional endowment, formulate development strategies according to local conditions, and adjust the way that land is used in a timely manner. 展开更多

Exploring the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of the border land use multifunctionality(LUMF)provides insights for taking advantage of border land use and optimizing border land use policies.Based on the improved Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution(TOPSIS)mode, this study identifies and evaluates the LUMFs in the China-Vietnam border area between 2000 and 2018 from the perspectives of agricultural production, social security, ecological service, landscape recreation, and national security. The results show that:1)The comprehensive land use functions in most counties and cities continued to be improved.2)The comprehensive land use function exhibits remarkable spatial divergence and aggregation characteristics. The high-value area of the agricultural production function and social security function evolves from the east to the west.In addition, the spatial evolution of ecological service function is complicated, without an obvious spatial divergence and aggregation pattern. The landscape recreation function shows different spatial differentiation characteristics in the early and middle stage, and forms a large cluster in the later stage. Finally, the spatial evolution pattern of the national security function is significant.3)Designing differentiated border land policies, improving border land use security, and establishing a long-term mechanism for ecological protection and ecological compensation can aid in optimizing the LUMF level in the border area. 展开更多

Firstly the general category and pattern of urban land evolution is theorized on the basis of correlating researches. This offers a research framework and theoretical reference for the case study in Suzhou area. Then four features of urban land evolution in Suzhou Area are summarized, including amount, locality structure, function structure and spatial structure. It is contended that all these features resulted from the developing process that has been followed with specific institutional transformation of China in this period. And in general economic development and structure shift is the key factor contributing to urban land evolution. Meanwhile rural demographic urbanization and town residents re urbanization and landuse institution reform are other two important underlying causes. In comparison with classical Western model, such urban land evolution happening in Suzhou area is explicitly distinct due to many ‘abnormal’ characteristics. But it is ‘normal’ according to the underlying mechanism, which arguably illustrates the invalidity of empirical theoretical model. 展开更多

On the basis of MSS and TM remote sensing data of 5 study periods during 1975-2002 as well as geographic data of Beijing City, evolution laws of landscape components and corresponding changes of the ecological environment are discussed through image processing and GIS analysis. The results show that structure of landscape eco-component changes greatly during the 27 study years, natural landscape components slightly increase,semi-natural landscape components drastically decline, humanistic landscape components increase fast and are mainly transformed from semi-landscape components, that is to say, urban construction land occupies a great number of farmland, and human interventions are serious;moreover, transformation among landscape components is also frequent in all study periods,semi-natural landscape components witness the largest transformation ratio,so semi-natural landscape components are a kind of relatively instable one in Beijing. In terms of eco-environment,natural landscape components within the city increase which is specifically demonstrated as increase of water, urban green space and vegetation coverage;compared with the data in 1975,it is obvious that eco-environment quality of Beijing is gradually improving, and urban environment quality also promoted. 展开更多
