Purpose:Taking the case of educational reform in French-speaking Belgium(the Pact for Educational Excellence),this article aims to describe the process of integrating evidence-based education(EBE)into an educational reform within a country where the influence of qualitative research is important.Design/Approach/Methods:A narrative case study was conducted to analyze and understand the stages of the ongoing educational reform process and the successive involvements of our research center in the work of this reform.Inspired by the paradigm of EBE,we initiated both the consultation processes intended to set the direction of educational decisions and programs.Findings:According to Slavin(2017,2019),providing educator-friendly reviews,making available a broad range of proven education programs,and providing resources to help schools to implement proven programs are levers for implementing evidence-based reform within an educational system.This article shows that one of the three levers is fully met.For the other two,work being done on EBE in the U.S.and the UK in particular can save us time.Originality/Value:This article highlights concrete actions that will ensure the gradual establishment and acceptance by political and educational actors of an evidence-based reform. 展开更多

Purpose:This review contrasts the U.S.and Chinese mainland in terms of educational technology programs’effects on mathematics achievement.The existing evaluation studies are assessed and compared,especially from the perspective of research quality.Moreover,this review finds out what intervention programs work in these two countries and classifies evidence levels of effective programs.Design/Approach/Methods:A systematic review and meta-analysis method is used.Findings:The application of educational technology programs produced a better effect in Chinese mainland than in the U.S.,however,the quantity and quality of evaluation studies is concerning in Chinese mainland.Since 2010,four programs in the U.S.and one program in Chinese mainland have qualified for strong evidence of effectiveness,which are worthy of receiving scale-up grants.Originality/Value:This is the first systematic review to contrast the U.S.and China in terms of educational technology programs'effects on mathematics achievement.Determining what works through high-quality experiments is probably the most important requirement for evidence-based reform in education.This review compares the developments of the U.S.,a leader of the movement,with those of China,an undecided observer.The review may provide enlightenment for the undecided countries and regions. 展开更多

AIM:To evaluate an evidence-based educational program for improving strategies for prevention of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug(NSAID)-associated gastrointestinal(GI)complications. METHODS:Four hundred and fifty-six specialists replied to a questionnaire that covered issues related to NSAID-induced adverse effects.They also collected data from their last five consecutive patients before and after they had attended an evidence-based seminar on GI prevention strategies. RESULTS:Four hundred and forty-one of 456 specialists(96.7%)participated in the survey,and 382(83.7%)in the education-based study that recorded data from 3728 patients.The specialists overestimated the risk of GI complications with NSAIDs,underestimated the GI safety profile of coxibs,but were aware of the risk factors and of the current prevention strategies.Proton pump inhibitors were co-prescribed with NSAIDs in>80% of patients with and without risk factors.The educational program had little impact on prescribing habits.CONCLUSION:Specialists are informed of advances in NSAID-associated adverse effects and have high rates of GI-prevention therapy.Our educational program did not alter these rates. 展开更多

This condition is widely attributable to unhealthy outcomes in its association with risk factors such as smoking and sedentary behavior. Risk factors play a significant role in the progression of coronary artery disease. We conducted a review of the literature with the purpose of identifying primary risk factors for coronary disease, lifestyle change interventions, and expectations for a reduction in cardiovascular events on the basis of evidence-based health education strategies. In addition, we sought to contextualize this review so that nurses are trained to use these findings in their practice at different levels of care. 展开更多

Statistical literacy is crucial for cultivating well-rounded thinkers.The integration of evidence-based strategies in teaching and learning is pivotal for enhancing students’statistical literacy.This research specifically focuses on the utilization of Share and Model Concepts and Nurturing Metacognition as evidence-based strategies aimed at improving the statistical literacy of learners.The study employed a quasi-experimental design,specifically the nonequivalent control group,wherein students answered pre-test and post-test instruments and researcher-made questionnaires.The study included 50 first-year Bachelor in Secondary Education majors in Mathematics and Science for the academic year 2023-2024.The results of the study revealed a significant difference in the scores of student respondents,indicating that the use of evidence-based strategies helped students enhance their statistical literacy.This signifies a noteworthy increase in their performance,ranging from very low to very high proficiency in understanding statistical concepts,insights into the application of statistical concepts,numeracy,graph skills,interpretation capabilities,and visualization and communication skills.Furthermore,the study showed a significant difference in the post-test scores’performance of the two groups in understanding statistical concepts and visualization and communication skills.However,no significant difference was found in the post-test scores of the two groups concerning insights into the application of statistical concepts,numeracy and graph skills,and interpretation capabilities.Additionally,students acknowledged that the implementation of evidence-based strategies significantly contributed to the improvement of their statistical literacy. 展开更多

Based on the educational evaluation reform,this study explores the construction of an evidence-based value-added evaluation system based on data-driven,aiming to solve the limitations of traditional evaluation methods.The research adopts the method of combining theoretical analysis and practical application,and designs the evidence-based value-added evaluation framework,which includes the core elements of a multi-source heterogeneous data acquisition and processing system,a value-added evaluation agent based on a large model,and an evaluation implementation and application mechanism.Through empirical research verification,the evaluation system has remarkable effects in improving learning participation,promoting ability development,and supporting teaching decision-making,and provides a theoretical reference and practical path for educational evaluation reform in the new era.The research shows that the evidence-based value-added evaluation system based on data-driven can reflect students’actual progress more fairly and objectively by accurately measuring the difference in starting point and development range of students,and provide strong support for the realization of high-quality education development. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Although the 2021 Chinese Clinical Practice Guidelines for Enhanced Recovery after Surgery(ERAS)provide recommendations for ERAS in gastrointestinal surgery,the clinical application of standard ERAS nursing models is challenging due to the variety of diseases involved in gastrointestinal surgery and the com-plex factors contributing to patient stress responses.Moreover,stress responses are more severe in older adult patients.Therefore,precision medicine is required to improve the quality of nursing care and promote postoperative recovery in gastrointestinal surgery.and demonstrate nursing benefits through clinical practice.METHODS This randomized clinical trial first established an evidence-based nursing ERAS protocol in older adult patients based on literature related to perioperative nursing measures for gastrointestinal surgery stress response.Next,392 older adult patients who underwent gastrointestinal surgery and were admitted to our hospital between December 2021 and June 2023 were categorized into two groups to receive evidence-based(study group)or conventional(control group)ERAS nursing models,respectively.Intraoperative physiological parameters during surgery and postoperative recovery indicators were compared between the groups.RESULTS Among 64 domestic and international studies,the stress responses of older adult patients mainly included emotional anxiety,sleep disorders,gastrointestinal discomfort,physical weakness,pain,and swelling.The appropriate nursing interventions included comprehensive psychological counseling,pre-and postoperative nutritional support,temperature control,pain management,and rehabilitation training.Compared with the control group,the study group showed lower heart rate,mean arterial pressure,blood glucose level,and adrenaline level;shorter duration of drainage tube placement,time to first flatus,time to first ambulation,and postoperative hospital stay;lower anxiety scores on postoperative day 3;and lower incidences of postoperative infection,obstruction,poor wound healing,and gastrointestinal reactions were lower in the study group(all P<0.05).CONCLUSION The evidence-based nursing measures targeting stress responses based on the conventional ERAS nursing model resulted in stable intraoperative physiological parameters during surgery,promoted postoperative recovery,and reduced the incidence of complications. 展开更多

Higher education institutions are becoming increasingly concerned with the retention of their students.This work is motivated by the interest in predicting and reducing student dropout,and consequently in reducing the financial losses of said institutions.Based on the characterization of the dropout problem and the application of a knowledge discovery process,an ensemble model is proposed to improve dropout prediction.The ensemble model combines the results of three models:logistic regression,neural networks,and decision tree.As a result,the model can correctly classify 89%of the students as enrolled or dropped and accurately identify 98.1%of dropouts.When compared with the Random Forest ensemble method,the proposed model demonstrates desirable characteristics to assist management in proposing actions to retain students. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is a global health burden that affects millions of individuals worldwide,necessitating extensive patient education.Large language models(LLMs)hold promise for addressing patient information needs.However,LLM use to deliver accurate and comprehensible IBD-related medical information has yet to be thoroughly investigated.AIM To assess the utility of three LLMs(ChatGPT-4.0,Claude-3-Opus,and Gemini-1.5-Pro)as a reference point for patients with IBD.METHODS In this comparative study,two gastroenterology experts generated 15 IBD-related questions that reflected common patient concerns.These questions were used to evaluate the performance of the three LLMs.The answers provided by each model were independently assessed by three IBD-related medical experts using a Likert scale focusing on accuracy,comprehensibility,and correlation.Simultaneously,three patients were invited to evaluate the comprehensibility of their answers.Finally,a readability assessment was performed.RESULTS Overall,each of the LLMs achieved satisfactory levels of accuracy,comprehensibility,and completeness when answering IBD-related questions,although their performance varies.All of the investigated models demonstrated strengths in providing basic disease information such as IBD definition as well as its common symptoms and diagnostic methods.Nevertheless,when dealing with more complex medical advice,such as medication side effects,dietary adjustments,and complication risks,the quality of answers was inconsistent between the LLMs.Notably,Claude-3-Opus generated answers with better readability than the other two models.CONCLUSION LLMs have the potential as educational tools for patients with IBD;however,there are discrepancies between the models.Further optimization and the development of specialized models are necessary to ensure the accuracy and safety of the information provided. 展开更多

Objective:To construct an evidence-based practice plan for perioperative nutritional optimization in esophageal cancer patients.Methods:By systematically searching relevant guidelines at home and abroad,two experts independently assessed the quality of the guidelines,extracted valuable evidence and recommendations,and initially formed a draft nursing program.Subsequently,an expert panel was organized to conduct a detailed discussion to review the practicality and effectiveness of the recommendations one by one,and the program was finally revised and improved.Results:The protocol covered four stages of patients’admission,preoperative,postoperative,and discharge,involving specific contents such as nutritional assessment,risk screening,dysphagia assessment,nutritional therapy,enteral and parenteral nutritional support,symptom management,and health education.The program included a total of 61 entries,with 33 class A recommendations and 28 class B recommendations.Conclusion:The constructed perioperative nutritional care program for esophageal cancer patients is scientific and practical,and can provide practical guidance for clinical care. 展开更多

Transforming Education with Photogrammetry:Creating Realistic 3D Objects for Augmented Reality Applications

Augmented reality(AR)is an emerging dynamic technology that effectively supports education across different levels.The increased use of mobile devices has an even greater impact.As the demand for AR applications in education continues to increase,educators actively seek innovative and immersive methods to engage students in learning.However,exploring these possibilities also entails identifying and overcoming existing barriers to optimal educational integration.Concurrently,this surge in demand has prompted the identification of specific barriers,one of which is three-dimensional(3D)modeling.Creating 3D objects for augmented reality education applications can be challenging and time-consuming for the educators.To address this,we have developed a pipeline that creates realistic 3D objects from the two-dimensional(2D)photograph.Applications for augmented and virtual reality can then utilize these created 3D objects.We evaluated the proposed pipeline based on the usability of the 3D object and performance metrics.Quantitatively,with 117 respondents,the co-creation team was surveyed with openended questions to evaluate the precision of the 3D object created by the proposed photogrammetry pipeline.We analyzed the survey data using descriptive-analytical methods and found that the proposed pipeline produces 3D models that are positively accurate when compared to real-world objects,with an average mean score above 8.This study adds new knowledge in creating 3D objects for augmented reality applications by using the photogrammetry technique;finally,it discusses potential problems and future research directions for 3D objects in the education sector. 展开更多

Getting physical with medical education:Exercise based virtual anatomy review classes for medical students

The benefits of regular physical activity are well known.Yet,few studies have examined the effectiveness of integrating physical activity(PA)into curricula within a post-secondary setting.To investigate the incorporation of PA into medical curriculum,we developed a series of optional exercise-based review sessions designed to reinforce musculoskeletal(MSK)anatomy course material.These synchronous sessions were co-taught by a group fitness instructor and an anatomy instructor.The fitness instructor would lead students through both strength and yoga style exercises,while the anatomy instructor asked questions about relevant anatomical structures related to course material previously covered.After the sessions,participants were asked to evaluate the classes on their self-reported exam preparedness in improving MSK anatomy knowledge,PA levels,and mental wellbeing.Thirty participants completed surveys;a majority agreed that the classes increased understanding of MSK concepts(90.0%)and activity levels(97.7%).Many(70.0%)felt that the classes helped reduce stress.The majority of respondents(90.0%)agreed that the classes contributed to increased feelings of social connectedness.Overall,medical students saw benefit in PA based interventions to supplement MSK course concepts.Along with increasing activity levels and promoting health behaviours,integrating PA into medical curriculum may improve comprehension of learning material,alleviate stress and foster social connectivity among medical students. 展开更多

In the context of"Internet+,"the rapid development and integration of infor-mation technology in China have brought new opportunities and challenges to psychological education in higher education.Compared with traditional psycho-logical education,the high information throughput and multichannel presentation of"Internet+"have altered students’cognitive characteristics.Consequently,traditional psychological education methods are no longer suitable for the current environment,and education methods pose new challenges for higher education.New media technologies within the"Internet+"framework have played a crucial role in psychological education.Further research is needed to explore new applic-ations for enhancing the quality of psychological education in higher education institutions.This paper reviews the current opportunities and challenges faced by psychological education in the context of"Internet+",and explores a mechanism-driven,collaborative,and efficient educational strategy that is responsive to new conditions. 展开更多

As an innovative educational mode,“Secondary-to-Undergraduate Articulation”refers to the integrated training mode between secondary vocational education and undergraduate education.For over a decade,various regions have explored training modes such as“3+4”and“five-year consistent system,”and Jiangsu Province has widely promoted and applied them.Various regions have established curriculum systems and teaching quality assurance mechanisms to promote the alignment between talent cultivation and industry demand.“Secondary-to-Undergraduate Articulation”provides students with dual opportunities for further education and employment,promotes efficient allocation of educational resources,and serves regional economic development.In the future,further improvement and optimization are needed to promote the high-quality development of the mode.The study helps to reveal the theoretical and practical path of integrating secondary vocational education with undergraduate education. 展开更多
