With the development of cyber-physical systems, system security faces more risks from cyber-attacks.In this work,we study the problem that an external attacker implements covert sensor and actuator attacks with resource constraints(the total resource consumption of the attacks is not greater than a given initial resource of the attacker)to mislead a discrete event system under supervisory control to reach unsafe states. We consider that the attacker can implement two types of attacks:One by modifying the sensor readings observed by a supervisor and the other by enabling the actuator commands disabled by the supervisor. Each attack has its corresponding resource consumption and remains covert. To solve this problem,we first introduce a notion of combined-attackability to determine whether a closedloop system may reach an unsafe state after receiving attacks with resource constraints. We develop an algorithm to construct a corrupted supervisor under attacks, provide a verification method for combined-attackability in polynomial time based on a plant,a corrupted supervisor, and an attacker's initial resource, and propose a corresponding attack synthesis algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated by an example. 展开更多

Wi-Fi devices have limited battery life because of which conserving battery life is imperative. The 802.11 Wi-Fi standard provides power management feature that allows stations(STAs) to enter into sleep state to preserve energy without any frame losses. After the STA wakes up, it sends a null data or PS-Poll frame to retrieve frame(s) buffered by the access point(AP), if any during its sleep period. An attacker can launch a power save denial of service(PS-DoS) attack on the sleeping STA(s) by transmitting a spoofed null data or PS-Poll frame(s) to retrieve the buffered frame(s) of the sleeping STA(s) from the AP causing frame losses for the targeted STA(s). Current approaches to prevent or detect the PS-DoS attack require encryption, change in protocol or installation of proprietary hardware. These solutions suffer from expensive setup, maintenance, scalability and deployment issues. The PS-DoS attack does not differ in semantics or statistics under normal and attack circumstances. So signature and anomaly based intrusion detection system(IDS) are unfit to detect the PS-DoS attack. In this paper we propose a timed IDS based on real time discrete event system(RTDES) for detecting PS-DoS attack. The proposed DES based IDS overcomes the drawbacks of existing systems and detects the PS-DoS attack with high accuracy and detection rate. The correctness of the RTDES based IDS is proved by experimenting all possible attack scenarios. 展开更多

Almost all work on model-based diagnosis (MBD) potentially presumes faults are per- sistent and does not take intermittent faults (IFs) into account. Therefore, it is common for diag- nosis systems to misjudge IFs as permanent faults (PFs), which are the major cause of the problems of false alarms, cannot duplication and no fault found in aircraft avionics. To address this problem, a new fault model which includes PFs and IFs is presented based on discrete event systems (DESs). Thereafter, an approach is given to discriminate between PFs and IFs by diagnosing the current fault. In this paper, the regulations of (PFs and IFs) fault evolution through fault and reset events along the traces of system are studied, and then label propagation function is modified to account for PFs and the dynamic behavior of IFs and diagnosability of PFs and IFs are defined. Finally, illustrative examples are presented to demonstrate the proposed approach, and the analysis results show the fault types can be discriminated within bounded delay if the system is diagnosable. 展开更多

The customer population of entities potentially requesting to join a queue for service often have identical structure, i.e., the same state set and isomorphic transitions. The state size of the automaton modeling a queue will grow rapidly with increase of the size of this population. However, by relabeling the queue arrival events and service events to the same symbols respectively, the automaton model of a queue will be converted to the structure of a buffer, which is proved to be independent of the total size of the customer population, as long as the queue size is held fixed. We propose the model of a dynamic buffer to embody order and shift of a queue. The result is applied to a manufacturing facility with a dynamic buffer to manage the repair of broken down machines. 展开更多

This paper discusses the mathematical description of hybrid event systems, consisting of continuous, discrete, even logic-judgment and inference-decision event systems. The description takes events as its core, and information interconnection as its tie. In this paper, an event, instead of a process, is regarded as an analyzed element. The hybrid event systems are described in mathematical models with the following tools: chains of time, generalized space and interconnecting information. 展开更多

The responses of vehicles to the changes in traffic situations inevitably have delays in observing an event and implementing a control command, which often causes fatal accidents. So far,the methods for handling delays are empirical and cannot be mathematically proven. To eliminate the accidents caused by such delays,in this paper,we develop mathematically provable methods to handle these delays.Specifically,we use networked discrete event systems to model the process of driving vehicles and present a supervisory controller for handling delay situations. The method developed in this paper could serve as a new start for modeling and controlling the responsive behaviors of self-driving vehicles in the future. 展开更多

In this paper, we consider the problem of automatic synthesis of decentralized supervisor for uncertain discrete event systems. In particular, we study the case when the uncontrolled plant is unknown a priori. To deal with the unknown plants, we first characterize the conormality of prefix-closed regular languages and propose formulas for computing the supremal conormal sublanguages; then sufficient conditions for the existence of decentralized supervisors are given in terms of language controllability and conormality and a learning-based algorithm to synthesize the supervisor automatically is proposed. Moreover, the paper also studies the on-line decentralized supervisory control of concurrent discrete event systems that are composed of multiple interacting unknown modules. We use the concept of modular controllability to characterize the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the local supervisors, which consist of a set of local supervisor modules, one for each plant module and which determines its control actions based on the locally observed behaviors, and an on-line learning-based local synthesis algorithm is also presented. The correctness and convergence of the proposed algorithms are proved, and their implementation are illustrated through examples. 展开更多

Fault detection and diagnosis(FDD) facilitates reliable operation of systems. Various approaches have been proposed for FDD like Analytical redundancy(AR), Principal component analysis(PCA), Discrete event system(DES) model etc., in the literature. Performance of FDD schemes greatly depends on accuracy of the sensors which measure the system parameters.Due to various reasons like faults, communication errors etc.,sensors may occasionally miss or report erroneous values of some system parameters to FDD engine, resulting in measurement inconsistency of these parameters. Schemes like AR, PCA etc.,have mechanisms to handle measurement inconsistency, however, they are computationally heavy. DES based FDD techniques are widely used because of computational simplicity, but they cannot handle measurement inconsistency efficiently. Existing DES based schemes do not use Measurement inconsistent(MI)parameters for FDD. These parameters are not permanently unmeasurable or erroneous, so ignoring them may lead to weak diagnosis. To address this issue, we propose a Measurement inconsistent discrete event system(MIDES) framework, which uses MI parameters for FDD at the instances they are measured by the sensors. Otherwise, when they are unmeasurable or erroneously reported, the MIDES invokes an estimator diagnoser that predicts the state(s) the system is expected to be in, using the subsequent parameters measured by the other sensors. The efficacy of the proposed method is illustrated using a pumpvalve system. In addition, an MIDES based intrusion detection system has been developed for detection of rogue dynamic host configuration protocol(DHCP) server attack by mapping the attack to a fault in the DES framework. 展开更多

A discrete event system is a dynamical system whose state evolves in time by the occurrence of events at possibly irregular time intervals. Timed Petri nets are a graphical and mathematical modeling tool applicable to discrete event systems in order to represent its states evolution where the timing at which the state changes is taken into consideration. One of the most important performance issues to be considered in a discrete event system is its stability. Lyapunov theory provides the required tools needed to aboard the stability and stabilization problems for discrete event systems modeled with timed Petri nets whose mathematical model is given in terms of difference equations. By proving stability one guarantees a bound on the discrete event systems state dynamics. When the system is unstable, a sufficient condition to stabilize the system is given. It is shown that it is possible to restrict the discrete event systems state space in such a way that boundedness is achieved. However, the restriction is not numerically precisely known. This inconvenience is overcome by considering a specific recurrence equation, in the max-plus algebra, which is assigned to the timed Petri net graphical model. 展开更多

A quite great progress of the supervisory control theory for discrete event systems (DES)has been made in the past nearly twenty years, and now, automata, formal language and Petri nets become the main research tools. This paper focus on the Petri nets based supervisory control theory of DES. Firstly, we review the research results in this field, and claim that there generally exists a problem in Petri nets based supervisory control theory of DES, that is, the deadlock caused by the controller introduced to enforce the given specification occurs in the closed-loop systems, especially the deadlock occurs in the closed-loop system in which the original plant is live. Finally, a possible research direction is presented for the solution of this problem. 展开更多

In this paper,we extend our previous results on detectability to nondeterministic discrete event systems. Many practical systems are nondeterministic, especially those in biomedicine.Disease models of patients are usually nondeterministic because hardly anything is deterministic in biological systems. The goal is to determine or estimate the current and subsequent states of a system based on a sequence of observations when the initial state of the system is unknown. We say that a system is detectable if one can determine its state after observing some outputs. The observation includes partial event observation and/or partial state observation. We define four types of detectabilities:strong detectability,(weak) detectability, strong periodic detectability, and (weak) periodic detectability. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for these detectabilities. These conditions can be checked by constructing an observer, which models the estimation of states under different observation.Furthermore,we apply the results to medical diagnosis by considering a realistic example of diagnosing whether a patient suffers from one of the following five similar diseases:(1) rheumatoid arthritis,(2) rheumatic arthritis,(3) systemic lupus eruthematosus,(4) bony ankylosis,or (5) spondylitis ankylopoietica. 展开更多

FDES(fuzzy discrete event systems) can effectively represent a kind of complicated systems involving deterministic uncertainties and vagueness as well as human subjective observation and judgement from the view of discrete events, here the information system is divided into some independent intelligent entitative Agents. The concept of information processing state based on Agents was proposed. The processing state of Agent can be judged by some assistant observation parameters about the Agent and its environment around, and the transition among these states can be represented by FDES based on rules. In order to ensure the harmony of the Agents for information processing, its upstream and downstream buffers are considered in the modeling of the Agent system, and the supervisory controller based on FDES is constructed. The processing state of Agent can be adjusted by the supervisory controller to improve the stability of the system and the efficiency of resource utilization during the process according to the control policies. The result of its application was provided to illustrate the validity of the supervisory adjustment. 展开更多

The diagnosability of discrete event systems has been a topic of interest to many researchers. The diagnosability conditions for various systems have evolved based on a regularity condition that is imposed on faulty traces with respect to their observable continuations. Improving upon this weak but necessary condition, a new model of diagnosability that is based on sensor outputs, which are called observatio ns, upon a command in put is proposed in this paper. Necessary and sufficient con ditions are derived for the proposed diagnosability model. The search performance of the proposed diagnosability condition is of linear complexity in terms of the power set of the system events and observations, compared to the exponential complexity of the search with the existing diag nosability regularity condition. Moreover, a system that is not diag no sable according to the existi ng diag nosability condition may be diagnosable in the proposed diagnosability model, which includes observations. 展开更多

Objective:Artemether is a semi-synthetic derivative of artemisinin and is widely used in the treatment of Plasmodium(P.)falciparum malaria. This study aimed to characterize the safety profile of artemether based on 15-year data retrived from FDA adverse event reporting system(FAERS).Methods:This is a retrospective analysis on 15-year data of artemether-related adverse effects(AEs)retrieved from the FAERS.AEs were classified according to System Organ Class(SOC)and Preferred Terms(PT).Signal detection was performed using Reporting Odds Ratios(ROR),Proportional Reporting Ratios(PRR),and Empirical Bayes Geometric Mean(EBGM).Stratified analyses examined the impact of demographic factors such as sex, age, and time-to-onset.Temporal patterns and associated risk factors were also investigated. Results:Haemolytic anaemia and haemolysis emerged as the most frequently reported AEs,exhibiting significantly elevated RORs(males:ROR 381.36,95%CI 247.06-588.60;females:ROR 455.11,95%CI 286.43-723.12).Sex-specific differences were evident, with females showing a higher incidence of reproductive-related AEs,including spontaneous abortion and premature labour.Temporal trend analysis revealed that the majority of AEs occurred within the first 30 days after the initiation of artemether administration, indicating a rapid onset. The most affected SOCs were blood and lymphatic system disorders and hepatobiliary disorders. Conclusions:Artemether is associated with a notable frequency of early-onset AEs,particularly hematological and hepatobiliary disorders. The observed sex-specific vulnerability to reproductive AEs highlights the need for sex-conscious clinical approaches.Enhanced post-treatment monitoring and further investigations into the drug’s pharmacokinetics and mechanistic pathways are recommended. 展开更多

The authors consider the property of detectability of discrete event systems in the presence of sensor attacks in the context of cyber-security.The authors model the system using an automaton and study the general notion of detectability where a given set of state pairs needs to be(eventually or periodically)distinguished in any estimate of the state of the system. The authors adopt the ALTER sensor attack model from previous work and formulate four notions of CA-detectability in the context of this attack model based on the following attributes:strong or weak;eventual or periodic. The authors present verification methods for strong CA-detectability and weak CA-detectability.The authors present definitions of strong and weak periodic CA-detectability that are based on the construction of a verifier automaton called the augmented CA-observer.The development also resulted in relaxing assumptions in prior results on D-detectability,which is a special case of CA-detectability. 展开更多

Objective:Despite established associations between certain medications and urticaria, the risk profiles of most pharmaceutical agents remain poorly characterized. This investigation aimed to identify risk factors for medication-induced urticaria through comprehensive analysis of the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System(FAERS)database. Methods:We employed reporting odds ratios(ROR)to evaluate drug-urticaria associations using FAERS data spanning from Q12004 to Q32024.Analytical approaches included univariate screening,LASSO regression, and multivariate logistic regression to identify potential risk factors.Multiple comparison adjustments were implemented using the Bonferroni method. Results:The study identified 1807 pharmaceutical agents potentially associated with urticaria development.Univariate analysis categorized these agents into several therapeutic classes:antimicrobials(19/85),biologics(16/85),analgesics(8/85),dermatologicals(3/85),anti-rheumatic agents(4/85),hormonal preparations(3/85),antihypertensives(2/85),neuropsychiatric medications(2/85),uric acid-lowering drugs(2/85),multiple sclerosis therapies(2/85),and miscellaneous agents(17/85).Multivariate analysis identified three significant risk determinants:middle-aged individuals(36-53 years),female gender, and exposure to any of 82 specific medications. Conclusion:These evidence-based findings provide valuable insights for early clinical recognition of drug-induced urticaria and establish a foundation for subsequent mechanistic investigations into medication-related hypersensitivity reactions. 展开更多
