Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of bicycle and arm ergometer exercises on physical and psychosocial functions in patients who underwent Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery. Methods: A total of 39 cases (35 males, 4 females) were included in the study, with 23 participants aged between 52 and 65 using bicycle ergometers and a group of 16 people who performed arm ergometers opposite. After the demographic data were recorded, physical functions of all individuals participating in the study were evaluated with a 6-minute walk test, bioimpedance analysis, HDL, LDL, Triglyceride and Total cholesterol values, and psychosocial functions were evaluated with the Beck depression scale, modified borg scale and SF 36 questionnaires before and after the training. All participants were given bicycle or arm ergometer exercises for 6 weeks, 5 sessions per week, for a total of 30 sessions. Result: When the results were examined, it was observed that there was a statistically significant increase in walking distance of the people in the bicycle ergometer group compared to the arm ergometer group (p < 0.05). In addition, it was revealed that there was a statistically significant difference in the general health parameter, which is one of the sub-parameters of SF 36, in the arm ergometer group compared to the bicycle ergometer group (p Conclusion: When we look at the results of this study, it is important in terms of revealing that bicycle and arm ergometer exercises similarly improve the physical and psychosocial functions of patients who have undergone Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery. However, it has been shown that cycling exercises are much more advantageous in improving functional capacity. Summary Statement: What is already known about this topic? 1) Walking and arm exercises are good for heart diseases. What this paper adds? 2) Demonstrated that cycling and arm ergometer exercises have curative aspects for patients undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery. The implications of this paper: 3) As a result, it has been revealed that cycling and arm ergometry techniques are good indicators in patients who have undergone Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery. 展开更多

Background: Physical fitness tests are widely used to assess endurance, sprint ability, coordination and/or strength. The objective of the present study was to analyze the degree to which the results of the Bundeswehr Basis Fitness Test(BFT)–a physical fitness test comprising a sprint test(11×10-m shuttle test),a flexed-arm hang test and a 1000-m run–are consistent with the output measured during a bicycle ergometer test. The number of false-positive and falsenegative results with regard to the assessment of physical fitness were also examined. Methods: As part of a retrospective study, health assessments from 323 reenlistment examinations were evaluated regarding the output measured during a bicycle ergometer test and compared with the BFT results of the candidates. Results: Overall,a good correlation was shown between the bicycle ergometer test results and the results achieved in the BFT disciplines. All three disciplines of the BFT showed a highly significant correlation with the relative output achieved during the bicycle ergometer test(P<0.001),and also, the overall BFT score was highly significantly correlated(P<0.001).The overall rate of false-positive and false-negative results was 4.0%.Conclusion: The BFT results measured in the three physical fitness test items were highly correlated with the output measured during the bicycle ergometer tests. The rate of false-positive and false-negative results was low.The test items thus represent an appropriate measurement instrument because the test items require few equipment and less time.Additionally,a large number of subjects can be assessed. We suggest that it would be more useful to assess the physical fitness of this special group exclusively on the basis of the BFT instead of using the bicycle ergometer test. 展开更多

Measuring cardiorespiratory fitness(CRF)is an important predictor of morbidity and mortality in epidemiological studies and clinical settings.1 However, the feasibility of measuring maximal CRF is low due to the time, equipment, and expertise needed to conduct laboratory cardiopulmonary exercise testing(CPET)to determine the maximal rate of oxygen uptake(VO2max)as an objective measure of CRF.Alternatively, indirect estimates of CRF have been applied by measuring maximal duration on treadmill or cycle ergometer tests,2,3 extrapolating maximal CRF from workload or heart rate during submaximal fitness tests,4,5 and using non-exercise algorithms to estimate CRF from an individual’s age, sex, body mass, and physical activity habits.6 It is assumed that objectively measured VO2max is superior to extrapolated and estimated values due to errors associated with the estimated values;7,8 however, until Singh et al.9 newly released article in the Journal of Sport and Health Science, the comparability of these methods in identifying risks for all-cause and cardiovascular disease(CVD)mortality was unknown. 展开更多

In this review we summarized literatures about biomechanical researches in kayaking. Biomechanical methods provide data on a number of analytical techniques and kayak moving posture for coaches and athletes. 3-D kinematic analysis, on-water dynamic analysis and surface electromyography measurement are the most common methods through which we can assess and describe effects of paddling techniques and training. The purposes of numerous current studies are to identify the factors which restrict kayak performance, make improvement of techniques, prevent and correct mistakes, and develop new type of practical instrument. As a result, we found that although researchers realized the importance of kayaking balance ability and core stability, but balance ability and core stability haven’t been considered yet in mechanics analysis and instrument design fields, nor have the research of muscle working status under unsteady state. Our findings through this literature review reveal important directions for further study in the biomechanical researches in kayaking. 展开更多

Oxygen uptake(V O_(2))was measured during a non-exhaustive high-intensity intermittent cross-exercise(HIICE)protocol consisting of four alternating bouts of 20 s running(R)and three bouts of bicycle exercise(BE)at~160%and~170%maximal oxygen uptake(V O_(2)max),respectively,with 10 s between-bout rests(sequence R-BE-R-BER-BE-R).The V O_(2) during the last BE([52.2±5.0]mL⋅kg^(-1)⋅min^(-1))was significantly higher than the V O_(2)max of the BE([48.0±5.4]mL⋅kg^(-1)⋅min^(-1),n=30)and similar to that of running. For clarifying the underlying mechanisms,a corresponding HIICE-protocol with BE and arm cranking ergometer exercise(AC)was used(sequence AC-AC-BE-AC-BE-AC-AC-BE).In some experiments, thigh blood flow was occluded by a cuff around the upper thigh.Without occlusion, the V O_(2) during the AC([39.2±7.1]mL⋅kg^(-1)⋅min^(-1)[6th bout])was significantly higher than the V O_(2)max of AC([30.2±4.4]mL⋅kg^(-1)⋅min^(-1),n=7).With occlusion, the corresponding V O_(2)([29.8±3.9]mL⋅kg^(-1)⋅min^(-1))was reduced to that of the V O_(2)max of AC and significantly less than the V O_(2) without occlusion. These findings suggest that during the last bouts of HIICE may exceed the of the specific exercise, probably because it is a summation of the V O_(2) for the ongoing exercise plus excess post-oxygen consumption(EPOC)produced by the previous exercise with a higher V O_(2)max. 展开更多
