In this paper, through the perspective of Merowitz’s media environmentalism, following the research path of media-scene-behaviour, and based on the results of the national reading survey released by the China Press and Publication Research Institute in the past ten years (2013-2022), we analyse the characteristics of national reading behaviours, explore the reasons for the changes in national reading behaviour in terms of technology, media, and scenarios. It also discusses the future trend of national reading behaviour and the promotion of national reading activities, and puts forward certain countermeasures from the government, schools and the society to make joint efforts to promote national reading. 展开更多

In Part 1 I like to give a synoptic view of contemporary environmentalism,... In this paper I like to revisit Bhumisukta of the Atharvaveda in the backdrop of present-day environmentalism. It is divided into three parts. In Part 1 I like to give a synoptic view of contemporary environmentalism, as reflected in Arne Naess's Deep Ecology. In Part 2 I make an exposition of the Bhumisukta, particularly those verses (mantras) which are directly relevant to our environmental concerns. To say the truth, this Bhumisukta (also called the Pcthivisitkta) epitomizes the Vedic Hindu eco-culture. The Bhumisukta (which literally means, the Hymn or Prayer to the Earth) is the oldest and the most evocative environmental discourse. It is called "the first natural anthem" in the history of mankind. It constitutes the first anuvgtka of dvgtda~ kgm. da of the Atharvaveda and contains 63 verses (mantras) devoted to glorifying the Earth as sacred and inviolable. Many prayers have been sung for the preservation and conservation of Nature and its gifts of splendor. The Bh^misftkta talks about human dependence on the Nature and respect for the same that follows naturally. It proclaims of the Earth as the mother, and humanity as her children Bhumisukta, putro'ham pr. thivyah" In Part 3 1 like to make a brief but critical observation regarding the loss of continuity of Vedic tradition in view of an objection made by some Western environmentalists. In this concluding part I like to respond to the objection that so called eco-sensitive cultures could not avert environmental pollution and depletion of Nature in countries, like India. 展开更多

Human cardiac organoids have revolutionized the study of cardiac development,disease modeling,drug discovery,and regenerative therapies.This review systematically discusses strategies and progress in the construction of cardiac organoids,categorizing them into three main types:cardiac spheroids,self-organizing/assembloid organoids,and organoid-on-a-chip systems.This review uniquely integrates the advances in vascularization,organ-on-chip design,and environmental cardiotoxicity modeling within cardiac organoid platforms,offering a critical synthesis that is absent in the literature.In the context of escalating environmental threats to cardiovascular health,there is an urgent need for physiologically relevant models to accurately identify cardiac toxicants and elucidate their underlying mechanisms of action.This review highlights advances in cardiac organoid applications for disease modeling—including congenital heart defects and acquired cardiovascular diseases—drug development,toxicity screening,and the study of environmentally induced cardiovascular pathogenesis.In addition,it critically examines ongoing challenges and underscores opportunities brought by bioengineering approaches.Finally,we propose future directions for developing standardized cardiac organoid platforms with clinical predictability,aiming to expand the utility of this technology across broader research applications. 展开更多

Green transplant refers to the realization of the importance of understanding and improving the environmental footprint of transplantation through sustainable practices.This involves assessing the entire transplantation process including preoperative evaluation,donation,organ and patient transportation,surgery,postoperative recovery,and follow-up.This is a topic that has not been fully addressed yet,but its importance is being increasingly appreciated in surgery.The aim of this study was to investigate the carbon footprint associated with transplantation and propose sustainable mitigating solutions.A comprehensive review of the existing literature on transplantation was conducted and supplemented with findings from the broader fields of surgical and perioperative care,given the scarcity of available data.The analysis identified the most involved environmental factors and attempted to offer practical solutions based on current sustainability practices.Notably,no study has yet examined the carbon footprint associated with the entire transplantation procedure.Only five studies have attempted to assess the environmental impact of kidney or liver transplants,but they focused,almost explicitly,on specific steps of the process.By employing an extrapolative methodology from the broader surgical field,we determined that the primary contributors to the environmental impact of transplantation are energy,consumables and materials,anesthesia and pharmaceuticals,transportation,and water.This review offers practical solutions utilizing the 5R framework,emphasizing sustainability to ensure transplantation remains clinically and environmentally relevant. 展开更多

The surge in environmental pollution in recent years driven by numerous pollutants has necessitated the search for efficient removal methods.Phytoremediation is an eco-friendly technique that provides multiple benefits over conventional methods of removing contaminants.Despite the numerous benefits of this technique,it has certain limitations that can be addressed by incorporating nanoparticles to improve its effectiveness.This review paper aims to explore the impact of heavy metal pollution on plants and human health.It highlights the role and mechanism of nanoparticles in enhancing phytoremediation,their application in the detection of heavy metals,and the strategies for the safe disposal of phytoremediation biomass.Biosynthesized nanoparticles are eco-friendly and non-toxic,with applications in biomedical and environmental fields.Nanoparticles can be used in the form of nano biosensors like smartphone-operated wireless sensors made from Cinnamomum camphora,enabling efficient detection of heavy metal ions.According to the studies,nanoparticles remove 80%–97%of heavy metals by various methods like reduction,precipitation,adsorption,etc.The phytoremediation biomass disposal can be done by heat treatment,phytomining,and microbial treatment with some modifications to further enhance their results.Phytoremediation is an environmentally friendly technique but requires further research and integration with biomass energy production to overcome scalability challenges and ensure safe biomass disposal. 展开更多

Te-Modulated Fe Single Atom with Synergistic Bidirectional Catalysis for High-Rate and Long-Cycling Lithium-Sulfur Battery

Single-atom catalysts(SACs)have garnered significant attention in lithium-sulfur(Li-S)batteries for their potential to mitigate the severe polysulfide shuttle effect and sluggish redox kinetics.However,the development of highly efficient SACs and a comprehensive understanding of their structure-activity relationships remain enormously challenging.Herein,a novel kind of Fe-based SAC featuring an asymmetric FeN_(5)-TeN_(4) coordination structure was precisely designed by introducing Te atom adjacent to the Fe active center to enhance the catalytic activity.Theoretical calculations reveal that the neighboring Te atom modulates the local coordination environment of the central Fe site,elevating the d-band center closer to the Fermi level and strengthening the d-p orbital hybridization between the catalyst and sulfur species,thereby immobilizing polysulfides and improving the bidirectional catalysis of Li-S redox.Consequently,the Fe-Te atom pair catalyst endows Li-S batteries with exceptional rate performance,achieving a high specific capacity of 735 mAh g^(−1) at 5 C,and remarkable cycling stability with a low decay rate of 0.038%per cycle over 1000 cycles at 1 C.This work provides fundamental insights into the electronic structure modulation of SACs and establishes a clear correlation between precisely engineered atomic configurations and their enhanced catalytic performance in Li-S electrochemistry. 展开更多

Environmental epidemiology of infectious diseases in the post-COVID-19 era:mechanisms,evidence,and future directions

Global environmental changes including climate warming,extreme weather events,ambient air pollution,freshwater contamination,and landscape transformation are reshaping the epidemiology of infectious diseases with unprecedented complexity,particularly in the post-COVID-19 era.This review synthesizes evidence from the past decade(2015-2024)to systematically elucidate how key environmental drivers modulate pathogen emergence,transmission dynamics,and clinical outcomes,with a focus on underlying mechanistic pathways.Specifically,we highlight:(1)the temperature-and precipitation-dependent transmission of vector-borne diseases(e.g.,malaria,dengue)via expanded vector habitats and accelerated pathogen incubation;(2)the exacerbation of respiratory infections(including COVID-19)by particulate matter(PM2.5)and nitrogen dioxide(NO2)through impaired mucosal immunity and enhanced inflammatory responses;(3)the persistence of diarrheal diseases in low-and middle-income countries(LMICs)linked to water insecurity and climate-induced infrastructure failure;and(4)zoonotic spillover risks amplified by urbanization and deforestation-driven human-wildlife interface disruption.Integrating the One Health socioecological framework,we further summarize methodological advances from high-resolution genomic surveillance to climate-informed machine learning models that have improved causal inference and predictive accuracy.Our synthesis confirms that environmental factors are not merely contextual but central,modifiable determinants of infectious disease risk,with disproportionate impacts on vulnerable populations.To mitigate future threats,we emphasize the urgency of interdisciplinary collaboration,integrated environmental-health monitoring platforms,and climate-resilient public health policies tailored to post-pandemic challenges.This review provides a timely roadmap for translating environmental epidemiology insights into actionable strategies to strengthen global health resilience. 展开更多

Anammox bacteria in constructed wetlands(CWs)play pivotal role in sustainable nitrogen transformation,yet existing studies lack comprehensive analysis of environmental gradients and microbial interactions,both key factors in anammox bacteria enrichment.This study investigated the mechanisms driving anammox bacteria enrichment in lab-scale simulated CWs treating high-nitrogen wastewater,focusing on bacterial community re-sponses across wetland layers with various strategies,including continuous up-flow influent,nitrogen loading increase,effluent recirculation,intermittent influent,and anammox bacteria inoculation.Results showed that total relative and absolute abundances of anammox bacteria ranged from 0.77%to 12.50%and from 0.13 to 6.46×10^(7) copies/g,respectively.Dissolved oxygen and pH had significant positive correlations with the absolute abundance of anammox bacteria,while organic matter and nitrate negatively impacted their relative abundance.Permutational multivariate analysis of variance indicated that spatial heterogeneity explained more variation in anammox bacteria abundance(43.44%)compared to operational strategies(8.58%).In terms of microbial interactions,60 dominant species exhibited potential correlations with anammox bacteria,comprising 170 interactions(105 positive and 65 negative),which suggested that anammox bacteria generally foster cooperative relationships with dominant bacteria.Notably,significant interspecies interactions were observed between Candidatus Kuenenia(dominant anammox bacteria in CWs)and species within the genera Chitinivibrio-nia and Anaerolineaceae,suggesting that microbial interactions primarily manifest as indirect facilitative effects rather than direct mutualistic relationships.Given that the Normalized Stochasticity Ratio in CWs were<50%,this study inferred that environmental gradients have greater influence on anammox bacteria than microbial interactions. 展开更多

Impact of Data Processing Techniques on AI Models for Attack-Based Imbalanced and Encrypted Traffic within IoT Environments

With the increasing emphasis on personal information protection,encryption through security protocols has emerged as a critical requirement in data transmission and reception processes.Nevertheless,IoT ecosystems comprise heterogeneous networks where outdated systems coexist with the latest devices,spanning a range of devices from non-encrypted ones to fully encrypted ones.Given the limited visibility into payloads in this context,this study investigates AI-based attack detection methods that leverage encrypted traffic metadata,eliminating the need for decryption and minimizing system performance degradation—especially in light of these heterogeneous devices.Using the UNSW-NB15 and CICIoT-2023 dataset,encrypted and unencrypted traffic were categorized according to security protocol,and AI-based intrusion detection experiments were conducted for each traffic type based on metadata.To mitigate the problem of class imbalance,eight different data sampling techniques were applied.The effectiveness of these sampling techniques was then comparatively analyzed using two ensemble models and three Deep Learning(DL)models from various perspectives.The experimental results confirmed that metadata-based attack detection is feasible using only encrypted traffic.In the UNSW-NB15 dataset,the f1-score of encrypted traffic was approximately 0.98,which is 4.3%higher than that of unencrypted traffic(approximately 0.94).In addition,analysis of the encrypted traffic in the CICIoT-2023 dataset using the same method showed a significantly lower f1-score of roughly 0.43,indicating that the quality of the dataset and the preprocessing approach have a substantial impact on detection performance.Furthermore,when data sampling techniques were applied to encrypted traffic,the recall in the UNSWNB15(Encrypted)dataset improved by up to 23.0%,and in the CICIoT-2023(Encrypted)dataset by 20.26%,showing a similar level of improvement.Notably,in CICIoT-2023,f1-score and Receiver Operation Characteristic-Area Under the Curve(ROC-AUC)increased by 59.0%and 55.94%,respectively.These results suggest that data sampling can have a positive effect even in encrypted environments.However,the extent of the improvement may vary depending on data quality,model architecture,and sampling strategy. 展开更多

Despite the widespread presence and frequent detection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)in various aspects of life,there is limited research on their exposure levels in pregnant women and cumulative exposure from the living environment.This study included 1311 women in late pregnancy from the Zunyi birth cohort and measured the urinary concentrations of 10 hydroxylated PAH metabolites(OH-PAHs).Risk assessment was conducted based on the estimated daily intake to calculate the hazard quotient and hazard index(HI).A linear regression model was used to analyze the relationship between creatinine-adjusted OH-PAHs concentrations and living environment and lifestyle factors,while principal component analysis was applied to trace the sources of PAHs exposure.1-OHPYR was detected in all participants’urine,with naphthalene metabolites having the highest concentrations among creatinine-adjusted PAHs.OH-PAHs concentrations were associated with housing type,room number,cooking frequency,household size,exercise frequency,fuel type,distance from main road,and drinking water source.Pregnant women using traditional fuels and living in bungalows had higher health risks than those using clean energy and living in buildings.Those living within 100 m of a main road had higher HI than those farther away.Coal combustion was identified as the primary source of PAHs exposure.The study emphasizes the importance of reducing PAHs exposure,especially for pregnant women living in polluted environments.It recommends public health interventions such as improving indoor ventilation and providing clean energy to reduce related health risks. 展开更多

In a rapid cycling synchrotron(RCS),the magnetic field is synchronized with the beam energy,creating a highly dynamic magnetic environment.A ceramic chamber with a shielding layer(RF shield),composed of a series of copper strips connected to a capacitor at either end,is typically employed as a vacuum chamber to mitigate eddy current effects and beam coupling impedance.Consequently,the ceramic chamber exhibits a thin-walled multilayered complex structure.Previous theoretical studies have suggested that the impedance of such a structure has a negligible impact on the beam.However,recent impedance measurements of the ceramic chamber in the China Spallation Neutron Source(CSNS)RCS revealed a resonance in the low-frequency range,which was confirmed by further theoretical analysis as a source of beam instability in the RCS.Currently,the magnitude of this impedance cannot be accurately assessed using theoretical calculations.In this study,we used the CST Microwave Studio to confirm the impedance of the ceramic chamber.Further simulations covering six different types of ceramic chambers were conducted to develop an impedance model in the RCS.Additionally,this study investigates the resonant characteristics of the ceramic chamber impedance,finding that the resonant frequency is closely related to the capacitance of the capacitors.This finding provides clear directions for further impedance optimization and is crucial for achieving a beam power of 500 kW for the CSNS Phase-Ⅱ project(CSNS-Ⅱ).However,careful attention must be paid to the voltage across the capacitors. 展开更多

Electrocatalytic nitrate-to-ammonia conversion offers dual environmental and sustainable synthesis benefits,but achieving high efficiency with low-cost catalysts remains a major challenge.This review focuses on cobalt-based electrocatalysts,emphasizing their structural engineering for enhanced the performance of electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction(NO3RR)through dimensional control,compositional tuning,and coordination microenvironment modulation.Notably,by critically analyzing metallic cobalt,cobalt alloys,cobalt compounds,cobalt single atom and molecular catalyst configurations,we firstly establish correlations between atomic-scale structural features and catalytic performance in a coordination environment perspective for NO3RR,including the dynamic reconstruction during operation and its impact on active site.Synergizing experimental breakthroughs with computational modeling,we decode mechanisms underlying competitive hydrogen evolution suppression,intermediate adsorption-energy optimization,and durability enhancement in complex aqueous environments.The development of cobalt-based catalysts was summarized and prospected,and the emerging opportunities of machine learning in accelerating the research and development of high-performance catalysts and the configuration of series reactors for scalable nitrate-to-ammonia systems were also introduced.Bridging surface science and applications,it outlines a framework for designing multifunctional electrocatalysts to restore nitrogen cycle balance sustainably. 展开更多

Sudden wildfires cause significant global ecological damage.While satellite imagery has advanced early fire detection and mitigation,image-based systems face limitations including high false alarm rates,visual obstructions,and substantial computational demands,especially in complex forest terrains.To address these challenges,this study proposes a novel forest fire detection model utilizing audio classification and machine learning.We developed an audio-based pipeline using real-world environmental sound recordings.Sounds were converted into Mel-spectrograms and classified via a Convolutional Neural Network(CNN),enabling the capture of distinctive fire acoustic signatures(e.g.,crackling,roaring)that are minimally impacted by visual or weather conditions.Internet of Things(IoT)sound sensors were crucial for generating complex environmental parameters to optimize feature extraction.The CNN model achieved high performance in stratified 5-fold cross-validation(92.4%±1.6 accuracy,91.2%±1.8 F1-score)and on test data(94.93%accuracy,93.04%F1-score),with 98.44%precision and 88.32%recall,demonstrating reliability across environmental conditions.These results indicate that the audio-based approach not only improves detection reliability but also markedly reduces computational overhead compared to traditional image-based methods.The findings suggest that acoustic sensing integrated with machine learning offers a powerful,low-cost,and efficient solution for real-time forest fire monitoring in complex,dynamic environments. 展开更多

Ecosystems along the eastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(EQTP)are highly fragile and extremely sensitive to climate change and human disturbances.To quantitatively assess climate-induced ecosystem responses,this study proposes a Climate-Induced Productivity Index(CIPI)based on the Super Slack-Based Measure(Super-SBM)model using remote sensing data from 2001 to 2020.The results reveal persistently low CIPI values(0.47-0.53)across major ecosystem types,indicating widespread vulnerability to climatic variability.Among these ecosystems,forests exhibit the highest CIPI(0.55),followed by shrublands(0.54),croplands(0.53),grasslands(0.51),and barelands(0.43).The Theil index analysis further demonstrates significant intra-group disparities,suggesting that extreme climatic events amplify CIPI heterogeneity.Moreover,the dominant environmental drivers differ among ecosystem types:the Palmer Drought Severity Index(PDSI)primarily constrains grassland productivity,solar radiation(SRAD)strongly influences shrub and cropland systems,whereas subsurface factors exert greater control in forested regions.This study provides a quantitative framework for evaluating climate-ecosystem interactions and offers a scientific basis for long-term ecological monitoring and security planning across the EQTP. 展开更多
