The additive design (AD) and additive manufacturing (AM) of jet engine parts will revolutionize the traditional aerospace industry. The unique characteristics of AM, such as gradient materials and micro-structures... The additive design (AD) and additive manufacturing (AM) of jet engine parts will revolutionize the traditional aerospace industry. The unique characteristics of AM, such as gradient materials and micro-structures, have opened up a new direction in jet engine design and manufacturing. Engineers have been liberated from many constraints associated with traditional methodologies and technologies. One of the most significant features of the AM process is that it can ensure the consistency of parts because it starts from point(s), continues to line(s) and layer(s), and ends with the competed part. Collaboration between design and manufacturing is the key to success in fields including aerodynamics, thermodynamics, structural integration, heat transfer, material development, and machining. Engineers must change the way they design a part, as they shift from the traditional method of "subtracting material" to the new method of "adding material" in order to manufacture a part. AD is not the same as designing for AM, A new method and new tools are required to assist with this new way of designing and manufacturing. This paper discusses in detail what is required in AD and AM, and how current problems can be solved. 展开更多

Effect of indirect non-thermal plasma on particle size distribution and composition of diesel engine particles

To explore the effect of the gas source flow rate on the actual diesel exhaust particulate matter(PM), a test bench for diesel engine exhaust purification was constructed, using indirect nonthermal plasma technology. The effects of different gas source flow rates on the quantity concentration, composition, and apparent activation energy of PM were investigated, using an engine exhaust particle sizer and a thermo-gravimetric analyzer. The results show that when the gas source flow rate was large, not only the maximum peak quantity concentrations of particles had a large drop, but also the peak quantity concentrations shifted to smaller particle sizes from 100 nm to 80 nm. When the gas source flow rate was 10L min^-1, the total quantity concentration greatly decreased where the removal rate of particles was 79.2%, and the variation of the different mode particle proportion was obvious. Non-thermal plasma(NTP) improved the oxidation ability of volatile matter as well as that of solid carbon. However, the NTP gas source rate had little effects on oxidation activity of volatile matter, while it strongly influenced the oxidation activity of solid carbon. Considering the quantity concentration and oxidation activity of particles, a gas source flow rate of 10L min^-1 was more appropriate for the purification of particles. 展开更多

A growing global population and the increasing prevalence of diet-related health issues such as“hidden hunger”,obesity,hypertension,and diabetes necessitate a fundamental rethinking of crop design and breeding.Synthetic metabolic engineering offers a method to modify and redesign metabolic pathways to increase the nutritional value of crops.We summarize recent advances in the biofortification of key nutrients including provitamin A,vitamin C,vitamin B9,iron,zinc,anthocyanins,flavonoids,and unsaturated fatty acids.We discuss the potential of multi-gene stacking,gene editing,enzyme engineering,and artificial intelligence in synthetic metabolic engineering.We propose future research directions and potential solutions centered on leveraging AI-driven systems biology,precision gene editing,enzyme engineering,agrobacterium-mediated genotype-independent transformation,and modular metabolic engineering strategies to develop next-generation nutritionally enhanced super crops and transform global food systems. 展开更多

The current work includes a numerical investigation of the effect of biodiesel blends with different aluminum oxide nanoparticle concentrations on the combustion process in the cylinder of a diesel engine.IC Engine Fluent,a specialist computational tool in the ANSYS software,was used to simulate internal combustion engine dynamics and combustion processes.Numerical analysis was carried out using biodiesel blends with three Al_(2)O_(3) nanoparticles in 50,100,and 150 ppm concentrations.The tested samples are called D100,B20,B20A50,B20A100,and B20A150 accordingly.The modeling runs were carried out at various engine loads of 0,100,and 200 Nm at a rated speed of 1800 rpm.The combustion characteristics are improved due to the catalytic effect and higher surface area of nano additives.The results showed the improvements in the combustion process as the result of nanoparticle addition,which led to the higher peak cylinder pressure.The increases in the peak cylinder pressures for B20A50,B20A100,and B20A150 about B20 were 3%,5%,and 8%,respectively,at load 200 Nm.The simulation found that the maximum temperature for biodiesel blends diesel was higher than pure diesel;this was due to higher hydrocarbon values of B20.Also,nano-additives caused a decrease in temperatures in the combustion of biofuels. 展开更多

This paper investigates the reliability of internal marine combustion engines using an integrated approach that combines Fault Tree Analysis(FTA)and Bayesian Networks(BN).FTA provides a structured,top-down method for identifying critical failure modes and their root causes,while BN introduces flexibility in probabilistic reasoning,enabling dynamic updates based on new evidence.This dual methodology overcomes the limitations of static FTA models,offering a comprehensive framework for system reliability analysis.Critical failures,including External Leakage(ELU),Failure to Start(FTS),and Overheating(OHE),were identified as key risks.By incorporating redundancy into high-risk components such as pumps and batteries,the likelihood of these failures was significantly reduced.For instance,redundant pumps reduced the probability of ELU by 31.88%,while additional batteries decreased the occurrence of FTS by 36.45%.The results underscore the practical benefits of combining FTA and BN for enhancing system reliability,particularly in maritime applications where operational safety and efficiency are critical.This research provides valuable insights for maintenance planning and highlights the importance of redundancy in critical systems,especially as the industry transitions toward more autonomous vessels. 展开更多

Quantum dot systems emerge as promising platforms for studying nanoscale thermoelectric effects and quantum fluctuation phenomena.In this work,we investigate the thermodynamic performance of a Coulomb-blockaded quantum dot operating as a quantum heat engine using the quantum master equation approach.By incorporating full counting statistics,we analyze both average transport properties and current fluctuations in this nanoscale system.We demonstrate that electron-electron interactions significantly enhance thermoelectric performance by increasing both the output power and energy conversion efficiency.Furthermore,we show that Coulomb interactions suppress current fluctuations while preserving the validity of the thermodynamic uncertainty relation.Our results provide important insights into the interplay between quantum effects and thermodynamic principles in nanoscale heat engines. 展开更多

Underwater gas-liquid two-phase propulsion technology is an emerging propulsion method that offers high efficiency and unrestricted navigation speed.The integration of this technology into water ramjet engines can significantly enhance propulsion efficiency and holds substantial potential for broad applications.However,forming a gas-liquid two-phase flow within the nozzle requires introducing a large amount of rammed seawater.At this time,there is a complex phase transition problem of combustion products in the combustion chamber,which makes the thermodynamic calculation for gas-liquid two-phase water ramjet engines particularly challenging.This paper proposes a thermodynamic calculation method for gas-liquid two-phase water ramjet engines,based on the energy equation for gas-liquid two-phase flow and traditional thermodynamic principles,enabling thermodynamic calculations under conditions of ultra-high water-fuel ratios.Additionally,ground ignition tests of the gas-liquid two-phase engine were conducted,yielding critical engine test parameters.The results demonstrate that the gas-liquid two-phase water ramjet engine achieves a high specific impulse,with a theoretical maximum specific impulse of up to 7000(N s)/kg.The multiphase flow effects significantly impact engine performance,with specific impulse losses reaching up to 25.86%.The error between the thrust and specific impulse in the ground test and the theoretical values is within 10%,validating the proposed thermodynamic calculation method as a reliable reference for further research on gas-liquid two-phase water ramjet engines. 展开更多

Pre-chamber ignition technology can address the issue of uneven in-cylinder mixture combustion in large-bore marine engines.The impact of various pre-chamber structures on the formation of the mixture and jet flames within the pre-chamber is explored.This study performed numerical simulations on a large-bore marine ammonia/hydrogen pre-chamber engine prototype,considering pre-chamber volume,throat diameter,the distance between the hydrogen injector and the spark plug,and the hydrogen injector angle.Compared with the original engine,when the pre-chamber volume is 73.4 ml,the throat diameter is 14 mm,the distance ratio is 0.92,and the hydrogen injector angle is 80°.Moreover,the peak pressure in the pre-chamber increased by 23.1%,and that in the main chamber increased by 46.3%.The results indicate that the performance of the original engine is greatly enhanced by altering its fuel and pre-chamber structure. 展开更多

Accurate extraction of surface water extent is a fundamental prerequisite for monitoring its dynamic changes.Although machine learning algorithms have been widely applied to surface water mapping,most studies focus primarily on algorithmic outputs,with limited systematic evaluation of their applicability and constrained classification accuracy.In this study,we focused on the Songnen Plain in Northeast China and employed Sentinel-2 imagery acquired during 2020-2021 via the Google Earth Engine(GEE)platform to evaluate the performance of Classification and Regression Trees(CART),Random Forest(RF),and Support Vector Machine(SVM)for surface water classification.The classification process was optimized by incorporating automated training sample selection and integration of time series features.Validation with independent samples demonstrated the feasibility of automatic sample selection,yielding mean overall accuracies of 91.16%,90.99%,and 90.76%for RF,SVM,and CART,respectively.After integrating time series features,the mean overall accuracies of the three algorithms improved by 4.51%,5.45%,and 6.36%,respectively.In addition,spectral features such as MNDWI(Modified Normalized Difference Water Index),SWIR(Short Wave Infrared),and NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index)were identified as more important for surface water classification.This study establishes a more consistent framework for surface water mapping,offering new perspectives for improving and automating classification processes in the era of big and open data. 展开更多

Electrocatalytic nitric oxide(NO)reduction reaction(NORR)is a promising and sustainable process that can simultaneously realize green ammonia(NH3)synthesis and hazardous NO removal.However,current NORR performances are far from practical needs due to the lack of efficient electrocatalysts.Engineering the lattice of metal-based nanomaterials via phase control has emerged as an effective strategy to modulate their intrinsic electrocatalytic properties.Herein,we realize boron(B)-insertion-induced phase regulation of rhodium(Rh)nanocrystals to obtain amorphous Rh_(4)B nanoparticles(NPs)and hexagonal close-packed(hcp)RhB NPs through a facile wet-chemical method.A high Faradaic efficiency(92.1±1.2%)and NH_(3) yield rate(629.5±11.0μmol h^(−1) cm^(−2))are achieved over hcp RhB NPs,far superior to those of most reported NORR nanocatalysts.In situ spectro-electrochemical analysis and density functional theory simulations reveal that the excellent electrocatalytic performances of hcp RhB NPs are attributed to the upshift of d-band center,enhanced NO adsorption/activation profile,and greatly reduced energy barrier of the rate-determining step.A demonstrative Zn-NO battery is assembled using hcp RhB NPs as the cathode and delivers a peak power density of 4.33 mW cm−2,realizing simultaneous NO removal,NH3 synthesis,and electricity output. 展开更多

Lacto-N-neotetraose(LNn T)is a crucial neutral core human milk oligosaccharide(HMO).In this study,we established a LNn T-producing Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell factory through comprehensive metabolic engineering.Specifically,the de novo biosynthetic pathway of LNn T was assembled by heterologously expressing the lactose permease(lac12)from Kluyveromyces lactis and the glycosyltransferase from Neisseria meningitidis in S.cerevisiae.Subsequently,carbon source regulation based on the glucose-sensitive GAL regulatory system was employed to optimize the expression time of heterologous genes,achieving a production of 15.61 mg/L of LNn T in shake-flask fermentation.In addition,the key rate-limiting steps involved in LNn T synthesis pathway were identified and the corresponding genes were overexpressed to enhance LNn T production,resulting in an 8-fold increase in LNn T titer compared to that of parental strain.To our knowledge,this is the first report on LNn T biosynthesis in S.cerevisiae,opening up the possibility of green production of LNn T using food-safe microorganisms. 展开更多

Radiative cooling systems(RCSs)possess the distinctive capability to dissipate heat energy via solar and thermal radiation,making them suitable for thermal regulation and energy conservation applications,essential for mitigating the energy crisis.A comprehensive review connecting the advancements in engineered radiative cooling systems(ERCSs),encompassing material and structural design as well as thermal and energy-related applications,is currently absent.Herein,this review begins with a concise summary of the essential concepts of ERCSs,followed by an introduction to engineered materials and structures,containing nature-inspired designs,chromatic materials,meta-structural configurations,and multilayered constructions.It subsequently encapsulates the primary applications,including thermal-regulating textiles and energy-saving devices.Next,it highlights the challenges of ERCSs,including maximized thermoregulatory effects,environmental adaptability,scalability and sustainability,and interdisciplinary integration.It seeks to offer direction for forthcoming fundamental research and industrial advancement of radiative cooling systems in real-world applications. 展开更多

Despite demonstrating significant anti-tumor potential as an artemisinin derivative,artesunate faces delivery efficiency challenges due to low water solubility and insufficient targeting specificity.To improve the delivery efficiency,we engineered three artesunate(ART) derivatives,AC_(15)-L(linear),AC_(15)-B(branched),and AC_(15)-C(cyclic) with distinct aliphatic chain architectures.Unexpectedly,we observed that AC_(15)-C exhibited superior cytotoxicity against 4T1 breast cancer cells,and had the highest binding affinity for Lon protease 1(LONP1)(-72.6 kcal/mol).Subsequently,disulfide bond-containing lipid-PEG(DSPESS-PEG2K) modified chain architecture-engineered ART derivatives nanoassemblies(NAs) were developed to mitigate solubility-related limitations while enhancing targeting precision.Molecular docking and experimental validation demonstrated that ART derivatives inhibited LONP1 through hydrophobic interactions while preserved Fe^(2+)-mediated Fenton-like reaction activity.In vitro and in vivo evaluations demonstrated that AC_(15)-C NAs outperformed free ART and other NAs,suppressing 4T1 tumor growth via dual action:LONP1-directed mitochondrial proteostasis collapse and reactive oxygen species(ROS) amplification through Fe^(2+)-ART interactions.This study elucidated a novel anti-tumor mechanism of ART through the rational design of derivatives with spatially configured aliphatic chains,and developed reductionresponsive NAs to provide an advanced delivery strategy. 展开更多

Band engineering and recombination mechanisms in lead-free perovskite solar cells

All-inorganic lead-free perovskite solar cells have emerged as environmentally benign candidates;however,their device performance is still constrained by pronounced carrier recombination losses in the bulk and at interfaces.By combining energy band alignment analysis with detailed modeling of recombination mechanisms,a systematic strategy for optimizing hole transport layers is developed.The results reveal that a negative valence band offset produces a cliff-like interface,which facilitates hole extraction while also accounting for the observed variations in open-circuit voltage.Furthermore,short-circuit current losses are quantitatively attributed to different recombination pathways,modeled by incorporating radiative,Shockley–Read–Hall,Auger,and interface recombination processes.This comprehensive approach not only clarifies the correlation between energy level alignment and recombination dynamics but also highlights the competing roles of band offset and interface defects in determining device performance.The optimized device architecture,based on Ge-based lead-free perovskites,achieves a power conversion efficiency of 25.1%,with an open-circuit voltage of 1.29 V,a short-circuit current density of 22.5 mA·cm^(-2),and a fill factor of 86.3%.These findings provide theoretical guidance for designing stable,high-performance,and environmentally friendly lead-free perovskite solar cells. 展开更多

High-performance alloys are indispensable in modern engineering because of their exceptional strength,ductility,corrosion resistance,fatigue resistance,and thermal stability,which are all significantly influenced by the alloy interface structures.Despite substantial efforts,a comprehensive overview of interface engineering of high-performance alloys has not been presented so far.In this study,the interfaces in high-performance alloys,particularly grain and phase boundaries,were systematically examined,with emphasis on their crystallographic characteristics and chemical element segregations.The effects of the interfaces on the electrical conductivity,mechanical strength,toughness,hydrogen embrittlement resistance,and thermal stability of the alloys were elucidated.Moreover,correlations among various types of interfaces and advanced experimental and computational techniques were examined using big data analytics,enabling robust design strategies.Challenges currently faced in the field of interface engineering and emerging opportunities in the field are also discussed.The study results would guide the development of next-generation high-performance alloys. 展开更多

Aqueous zinc(Zn)metal batteries(AZMBs)have distinct advantages in terms of safety and cost-effectiveness.However,the industrial application of AZMBs is currently not ready due to challenges of Zn dendrite growth and the side reactions such as hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)on the Zn anodes.In this review,we discuss how inorganic interfaces impact the Zn^(2+)plating/stripping reaction and overall cell performance.The discussion is categorized based on the types of inorganic materials,including metal oxides,other metal compounds,and inorganic salts.The proposed protection mechanisms for Zn metal anodes are highlighted,with a focus on the dendrite and HER inhibition mechanisms facilitated by various inorganic materials.We also provide our perspective on the rational design of advanced interfaces to enable highly reversible Zn^(2+)plating/stripping reactions toward highly stable AZMBs,paving the way for their practical implementation in energy storage. 展开更多
