A cross-sectional survey of 489 male subjects in the age group 15 to 65 years engageddirectly or indirectly in mango cultivation along with 208 control subjects was carried out to find their socio-economic, environmental and health conditions. The conditions like high illiteracy rate (49.5%), poverty (PCI less than Rs 100 per month, 52.2%), poor housing (mud houses, 66.7%) unsafe water supply (78.6%) were prevailing in the surveyed population. The high respiratory morbidity may be attributed to high prevalence of smoking andprolonged inhalation of organic dusts during farming operation associated with illiteracyand poor socio-economic status. Gastrointestinal disorders were related to poor hygienic conditions, smoking and consumption of contaminated water. The symptoms pertaining to CNS, skin and eyes were found to be associated with exposure to pesticides 展开更多

The paper is actually a literary research on (re)constructing cultural image of post-yugoslavian society, formed through literary sources, i.e., poetry. Using examples of award-winning young authors--Bojan Krivokapic, Mirko Bozic, and Sima Majic, different types of so-called engaged poetry are indicated. This kind of poetry is used to subtly, critically, or in a very subversive way relate to the existing world, but also a new postmodern identity is formed through specific and carefully chosen poetic lexis, deprived of any kind of structure or limitation. The poetry of mentioned authors is used as a provisory example in order to indicate that post-war period (as well as postmodern time) changes the perception of identity, from nationally and politically oriented structure to individual and subversive, conventions-free comprehension of Oneself. Although the three authors are very different in style and expression, what brings them together is tendency to escape conventional and traditional cultural images in order to emphasize the importance of Being Different, but Equally Rightful. 展开更多

This study explores the phenomenon of human hoping and its role as one addressed times of deep suffering. Vaclav Havel's writing on "deep hope" and Maurice Merleau-Ponty's classic work on embodiment were seen as points of intersection with Engaged Buddhist teachings. In-depth interviews with two Engaged Buddhists supported the premise of this paper: Deep or embodied hope is quite different from ordinary wishing or "hoping" and plays a positive role as one moved through their suffering process. 展开更多

Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between job characteristics (job autonomy, job feedback, skill variety, task identity, task significance) and work engagement of nurses in Malaysia. Methods: A survey using self-administered questionnaires was used to collect data from a sample of 856 staff nurses working in eight public hospitals in Malaysia.A shortened nine-item version of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale(UWES-9) was used to measure work engagement. The UWES-9 comprises three dimensions, which was measured with three items each: vigor, dedication, and absorption.Job characteristics (job autonomy, job feedback, skill variety, task identity, task significance) were measured with the corresponding subscales of the Job Diagnostic Survey. Each subscale consisted of three items.Hypotheses were tested using hierarchical regression analysis. Results: Findings indicated that all the five demographic variables (age, marital status, education, organizational tenure, job tenure) were unrelated to work engagement. The results further revealed that job autonomy (β=0.19,P < 0.01),job feedback (β=0.10,P < 0.01),task identity (β=0.13,P < 0.01),and task significance (β=0.08,P< 0.05) were positively related to work engagement.Skill variety (β=0.03,P> 0.05),however,did not affect work engagement. Conclusion: Job autonomy, job feedback, task identity, and task significance are important factors in predicting work engagement. The findings of this study highlighted the need to incorporate these core dimensions in nursing management to foster work engagement. 展开更多

Background: Based on the experience of hospital nurses, the aim of this study is to explore the phenomenon of how work-engaged nurses stay healthy in relationally demanding jobs involving very sick and/or dying patients. Method: In-depth interviews were conducted with ten work-engaged nurses employed at the main hospital in one region in Norway. The interviews were interpreted using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis method (IPA). Results: The results indicate the importance of using the personal resources: authenticity and a sense of humour for staying healthy. The nurses’ authenticity, in the sense of having a strong sense of ownership towards their personal life experiences, and a sense of having a meaningful life in line with their own values and interests, was an important element when they considered their own health to be good in spite of repetitive strain injuries and perceived stress. These personal resources seem to be positively related to their well-being and work engagement, which serves as an argument for including them among other personal resources, often conceptualized in terms of Psychological Capital (PsyCap). The results also showed that the nurses worked actively and intentionally with conditions that could contribute to safeguarding their own health. Conclusion: The results indicated the importance of stimulating the nurses’ area of knowledge about caring for themselves in order to enable them to maintain good physical and mental health. A focus on self-care should be part of the agenda as early as during nursing education. 展开更多

Objectives:Teachers are facing unprecedented new challenges leading them to face an increasing number of tasks that are not part of their job,as well as having to cope with the additional skills acquisition that comes with non-traditional forms of teaching and learning, and increased work pressure leading to an increase in the rate of teachers leaving the profession. Therefore, this study aims to explore the mechanism of the career calling on job burnout through career adaptability and work engagement. Methods:This study conducted a cross-sectional survey of 465 primary and secondary school teachers(PSST)in China's Mainland from the perspective of work adjustment and used structural equation modeling(SEM)to examine the mediating roles of career adaptability and work engagement in the relationship between teachers’career calling and job burnout. Results:The results show that PSSTs are above average in career calling, career adaptability, and work engagement, while job burnout is below average.A significant positive or negative correlation exists between career calling, career adaptability, work engagement, and job burnout. The result of path analysis indicates that career adaptability and work engagement exert an indirect influence on the job burnout of PSST through three paths:namely, the independent intermediary role of career adaptability(EV=−0.144),the independent intermediary role of work engagement(EV=0.172)and the chain intermediary role of the two(EV=0.176).Conclusion:This study emphasizes the importance of career adaptability and work engagement in teacher development in regulating career calling and job burnout. Therefore,on the one hand,we think that if managers want to reduce teachers’job burnout, they need to pay more attention to teachers’career adaptability and work engagement, rather than relying solely on teachers’career calling. On the other hand,it is to remind teachers not to rely on their adjustment to adapt to the work, but also to need outside help as much as possible. 展开更多

The dynamics of student engagement and emotional states significantly influence learning outcomes.Positive emotions resulting from successful task completion stand in contrast to negative affective states that arise from learning struggles or failures.Effective transitions to engagement occur upon problem resolution, while unresolved issues lead to frustration and subsequent boredom. This study proposes a Convolutional Neural Networks(CNN)based approach utilizing the Multi⁃source Academic Affective Engagement Dataset(MAAED)to categorize facial expressions into boredom, confusion, frustration, and yawning. This method provides an efficient and objective way to assess student engagement by extracting features from facial images.Recognizing and addressing negative affective states, such as confusion and boredom,is fundamental in creating supportive learning environments.Through automated frame extraction and model comparison, this study demonstrates reduced loss values with improving accuracy, showcasing the effectiveness of this method in objectively evaluating student engagement.Monitoring facial engagement with CNN using the MAAED dataset is essential for gaining insights into human behaviour and improving educational experiences. 展开更多

This study examines the impact of political polarization on youth engagement in Brazil, focusing on the intersection of historical legacies, cultural dynamics, and modern political influences.Tracing the evolution of polarization from the military dictatorship era to contemporary politics under Jair Bolsonaro, the study explores how polarized rhetoric, misinformation, and digital media have reshaped the political landscape for young Brazilians.Data for the study were collected through a survey of 159 college students aged 18-25 from public and private institutions across Brazil, complemented by 10 interviews with youth activists and party leaders from the Workers’Party(PT)and the Liberal Party(PL).These methods aimed to evaluate how polarization affects young people’s beliefs, political identities, behaviors, engagement levels, and ability to participate in constructive political discourse. The findings reveal that while polarization fosters hostility and deepens ideological divides,it also inspires youth activism by creating a sense of identity and belonging.Education, digital information channels, and the lack of representation in leadership roles emerge as key factors shaping youth engagement.Despite challenges, the research underscores hope:young Brazilians display resilience, critical awareness, and a shared desire for accountability and inclusivity. This study highlights the potential of youth to bridge divides and lead Brazil toward a more collaborative and democratic future. 展开更多

Background Health promotion(HP)interventions delivered through sports clubs have demonstrated promising outcomes among men,but less is known about which aspects of the interventions work, for whom, and under what circumstances. This rapid realist review aimed to understand the contexts, mechanisms, and outcomes of HP interventions for men delivered through sports clubs. Methods A systematic literature search was conducted in February 2023 for studies published after 2013 in MEDLINE,Embase, and SPORTDiscus databases.Included studies:(a)were delivered by or in collaboration with sports clubs,(b)targeted men aged 18+years,and(c)reported 1 or more HP outcomes.A grey literature search was also performed.Studies were included in a realist synthesis based on richness and rigor.Hereafter,context-mechanism-outcome(CMO)configurations were developed. Results We identified and screened 3358 studies, finally including 59 studies describing 22 interventions. Most HP interventions were delivered in high income countries, included Caucasian men aged 35-65 years with overweight/obesity,and used professional sports clubs(mostly football)for recruitment and facilities.Quantitative HP outcomes were reported across 19 interventions.Of these 19 interventions, the majority reported on weight(n=18),physical activity(n=12),mental health(n=10),and diet(n=9).We identified 13 CMOs related to how HP interventions affected men's recruitment, engagement, and health behavior maintenance. Conclusion Our findings show that using sports clubs for HP interventions is effective for engaging men.Recruitment was facilitated by leveraging sports clubs’identity, addressing masculinity-related barriers, improving accessibility, and building trust.Engagement was enhanced through shared identity experiences, safe spaces, inclusive competition, and self-efficacy.However,there's limited evidence on behavior maintenance post-intervention,though involving community stakeholders seemed vital. In general, considerations should be made to avoid perpetuating traditional masculine norms, which may exclude some men and reinforce unhealthy behaviors. These findings can guide intervention development, emphasizing the need to harness men's perspectives in the process. 展开更多

Student engagement in learning is a concern for teachers in the implementation of blended learning, which reflects the effectiveness of the pedagogical measures taken by teachers.Blended learning encompasses traditional blended, blended online, and blended synchronous, which combine synchronous and asynchronous teaching and learning activities. This paper adopts an inductive approach to investigate and analyse students‘engagement in learning from three dimensions:behavioural, affective and cognitive, specifically focusing on three meta-categories,namely,course structure and arrangement, choice of teaching and learning activities, and teacher’s role in relation to the course,to investigate the teaching of teachers of different disciplines in three vocational colleges and to analyse the pedagogical strategies that the teachers use in order to improve students’engagement in blended learning. The findings suggest that communicating about the course at the beginning of the semester, clarifying course requirements, and building a trusting relationship with students play a key role in increasing student engagement in blended learning, and that the use of digital tools is an important means of promoting students’behavioural and emotional active participation in learning. 展开更多

Can a reader, upon reading literary fictions,be moved into social actions or engage in socially meaningful activities? If it is so,then will reading gay-themed,popular fictions mean anything for the LGBTQ issue in contemporary China? This article argues that a reader of gay-themed,“Boys Love”(or“BL”for short)novels may be moved into taking some social actions for greater tolerance and acceptance of the LGBTQ community in contemporary China, based on the concept of“engaged spectator”,which is a reconstruct of Adam Smith’s moral-psychological model of“impartial spectator”into an actively reading, socially engaged agent taking affirmative actions to bring about greater social justice. This“engaged spectator”shall have a few steps in its active reading of fictions and engaging in transformative social actions, namely“subjective identification”,“ambience appreciation”,and finally,“social engagement”-the three of which are in a lexical order. This tri-step model is based on a neuropsychological reading of Adam Smith into the reader empathy theory.Furthermore, this model is illustrated with Kirin,a popular BL novel, where the reader may engage in social actions to create a more tolerant environment for the LGBTQ community in contemporary China. The three steps outlined above shall offer us an account of explaining how an active reading experience may lead to a socially transformative result. 展开更多

The classroom participation is influenced by quality courses and teachers, and seat selection is an indicator of students’willingness to participate in the classroom. This study utilized a questionnaire to explore the dynamic mechanism underlying how teacher-student proximity and course importance affect classroom engagement.A survey on seat selection was conducted with 500 students across four grades(A,B,C,D)based on their academic performance.A simulated classroom was used to ask students about seat selection in different conditions, related to course importance predetermined by the school authorities(C1:important,C2:not important,C0:unknown)and teacher likeability judged by students themselves(T1:very popular,T2:not popular,T0:unknown).Important courses and well-liked teachers encourage students to opt for front seats. The seat selection among students of different grades varied significantly in the conditions that were established, except for C0T1.High-performing students(those allotted A grade)chose seats closer to the front of the class in comparison with their lower-performing peers in all set conditions.Further, course importance has more influence on students’seat choices than the popularity of the teacher. The data collected from low-performing students(with D grade)reflect the opposite results. This study reveals the relationship between classroom seating and performance, emphasizing the importance of enhancing students’classroom participation willingness for the improvement of teaching effectiveness in university. 展开更多
