Skin panels on supersonic vehicles are subjected to aero-thermo-acoustic loads, resulting in a well-known multi-physics dynamic problem. The high-frequency dynamic response of these panels significantly impacts the structural safety of supersonic vehicles, but it has been rarely investigated.Given that existing methods are inefficient for high-frequency dynamic analysis in multi-physics fields, the present work addresses this challenge by proposing a Stochastic Energy Finite Element Method(SEFEM).SEFEM uses energy density instead of displacement to describe the dynamic response, thereby significantly enhancing its efficiency. In SEFEM,the effects of aerodynamic and thermal loads on the energy propagation characteristics are studied analytically and incorporated into the energy density governing equation. These effects are also considered when calculating the input power generated by the acoustic load, and two effective approaches named Frequency Response Function Method(FRFM)and Mechanical Impedance Method(MIM)are developed accordingly and integrated into SEFEM.The good accuracy, applicability, and high efficiency of the proposed SEFEM are demonstrated through numerical simulations performed on a two-dimensional panel under aero-thermoacoustic loads.Additionally, the effects and underlying mechanisms of aero-thermo-acoustic loads on the high-frequency response are explored. This work not only presents an efficient approach for predicting high-frequency dynamic response of panels subjected to aero-thermo-acoustic loads, but also provides insights into the high-frequency dynamic characteristics in multi-physics fields. 展开更多

The element energy projection (EEP) method for computation of super- convergent resulting in a one-dimensional finite element method (FEM) is successfully used to self-adaptive FEM analysis of various linear problems, based on which this paper presents a substantial extension of the whole set of technology to nonlinear problems. The main idea behind the technology transfer from linear analysis to nonlinear analysis is to use Newton's method to linearize nonlinear problems into a series of linear problems so that the EEP formulation and the corresponding adaptive strategy can be directly used without the need for specific super-convergence formulation for nonlinear FEM. As a re- sult, a unified and general self-adaptive algorithm for nonlinear FEM analysis is formed. The proposed algorithm is found to be able to produce satisfactory finite element results with accuracy satisfying the user-preset error tolerances by maximum norm anywhere on the mesh. Taking the nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE) of second-order as the model problem, this paper describes the related fundamental idea, the imple- mentation strategy, and the computational algorithm. Representative numerical exam- ples are given to show the efficiency, stability, versatility, and reliability of the proposed approach. 展开更多

Based on the newly-developed element energy projection (EEP) method for computation of super-convergent results in one-dimensional finite element method (FEM), the task of self-adaptive FEM analysis was converted into the task of adaptive piecewise polynomial interpolation. As a result, a satisfactory FEM mesh can be obtained, and further FEM analysis on this mesh would immediately produce an FEM solution which usually satisfies the user specified error tolerance. Even though the error tolerance was not completely satisfied, one or two steps of further local refinements would be sufficient. This strategy was found to be very simple, rapid, cheap and efficient. Taking the elliptical ordinary differential equation of second order as the model problem, the fundamental idea, implementation strategy and detailed algorithm are described. Representative numerical examples are given to show the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed approach. 展开更多

The newly proposed element energy projection(EEP) method has been applied to the computation of super_convergent nodal stresses of Timoshenko beam elements.General formulas based on element projection theorem were derived and illustrative numerical examples using two typical elements were given. Both the analysis and examples show that EEP method also works very well for the problems with vector function solutions. The EEP method gives super_convergent nodal stresses, which are well comparable to the nodal displacements in terms of both convergence rate and error magnitude. And in addition,it can overcome the “shear locking” difficulty for stresses even when the displacements are badly affected. This research paves the way for application of the EEP method to general one_dimensional systems of ordinary differential equations. 展开更多

The energy density control equation for one-dimensional structure is provided firstly. Interval analysis method is applied to the control equation to obtain the range of energy density responses of structures with interval parameters. A cantilever beam with interval-valued damping coefficient is exemplified to carry out a simulation. The result shows that the mean value of energy density from the interval analysis method is the same as that from a probabilistic method which validates the interval analysis method. Besides, the response range from the interval analysis method is wider and includes that from the probabilistic method which indicates the interval analysis method is a more conservative method and is safer in realistic engineering structures. 展开更多

To take into account the influence of uncetainties on the dynamic response of the vibro-acousitc structure, a hybrid modeling technique combining the finite element method(FE)and the statistic energy analysis(SEA) is proposed to analyze vibro-acoustics responses with uncertainties at middle frequencies. The mid-frequency dynamic response of the framework-plate structure with uncertainties is studied based on the hybrid FE-SEA method and the Monte Carlo(MC)simulation is performed so as to provide a benchmark comparison with the hybrid method. The energy response of the framework-plate structure matches well with the MC simulation results, which validates the effectiveness of the hybrid FE-SEA method considering both the complexity of the vibro-acoustic structure and the uncertainties in mid-frequency vibro-acousitc analysis. Based on the hybrid method, a vibroacoustic model of a construction machinery cab with random properties is established, and the excitations of the model are measured by experiments. The responses of the sound pressure level of the cab and the vibration power spectrum density of the front windscreen are calculated and compared with those of the experiment. At middle frequencies, the results have a good consistency with the tests and the prediction error is less than 3. 5dB. 展开更多

The isothermal oxidation kinetics of a Co-40Cr alloy and its yttrium ion-implanted samples were studied at 1000℃ in air by thermal-gravity analysis (TGA). Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the Cr203 oxide film's morphology after oxidation. An acoustic emission (AE) method was used in situ to monitor the cracking and spalling of oxide films formed on samples during oxidation and subsequent aircooling stages. A theoretical model was proposed relating to the film fracture process and was used to analyze the acoustic emission spectrum on time domain and the AE-event number domain. It was found that yttrium implantation remarkably reduced the isothermal oxidation rate of Co-40Cr and improved the anti-cracking and anti-spalling properties of Cr2O3 oxide film. The reasons for the improvement were mainly that the implanted yttrium reduced the grain size of Cr2O3 oxide, increased the high temperature plasticity of oxide film, and remarkably reduced the number and size of Cr203/Co-40Cr interfacial defects. 展开更多

Based on the newly-developed element energy projection (EEP) method with optimal super-convergence order for computation of super-convergent results, an improved self-adaptive strategy for one-dimensional finite element method (FEM) is proposed. In the strategy, a posteriori errors are estimated by comparing FEM solutions to EEP super-convergent solutions with optimal order of super-convergence, meshes are refined by using the error-averaging method. Quasi-FEM solutions are used to replace the true FEM solutions in the adaptive process. This strategy has been found to be simple, clear, efficient and reliable. For most problems, only one adaptive step is needed to produce the required FEM solutions which pointwise satisfy the user specified error tolerances in the max-norm. Taking the elliptical ordinary differential equation of the second order as the model problem, this paper describes the fundamental idea, implementation strategy and computational algorithm and representative numerical examples are given to show the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed approach. 展开更多

The main goal of this study was to investigate the effects of selected ship collision parameter values on the characteristics of the absorbed energy in several ship collision scenarios. Non-linear simulations were performed using a finite element method (FEM) to obtain virtual experiment data. In the present research, the size of the side damage from a collision phenomenon were measured and used to verify the numerical configuration together with the calculation results using an empirical equation. Parameters in the external dynamics of a ship collision such as the location of the contact point and velocity of the striking ship were taken into consideration. The internal energy and deformation size on the side structure were discussed further in a comparative study. The effects of the selected parameters on several structural behaviors, namely energy, force, and damage extent were also observed and evaluated in this section. Stiffener on side hull was found to contribute significantly into resistance capability of the target ship against penetration of the striking bow. Remarkable force during penetration was observed to occur when inner shell was crushed as certain velocity was applied in the striking bow. 展开更多

This study presents the layout optimization of stiffeners. The minimum weight of stiffeners is taken as the objective function with the global stiffness constraint. In the layout optimization, the stiffeners should be placed at the locations with high strain energy/or stress. Conversely, elements of stiffeners with a small strain energy/or stress are considered to be used inefficiently and can be removed. Thus, to identify the element efficiency so that most inefficiently used elements of stiffeners can be removed, the element sensitivity of the strain energy of stiffeners is introduced, and a search criterion for locations of stiffeners is presented. The layout optimization approach is given for determining which elements of the stiffeners need to be kept or removed. In each iterative design, a high efficiency reanalysis approach is used to reduce the computational effort. The present approach is implemented for the layout optimization of stiffeners for a bunker loaded by the hydrostatic pressure. The numerical results show that the present approach is effective for dealing with layout optimization of stiffeners for plate-shell structures. 展开更多

The development of damage detection techniques for offshore jacket structures is vital to prevent catastrophic events. This paper applies a frequency response based method for the purpose of structural health monitoring. In efforts to fulfill this task, concept of the minimum rank perturbation theory has been utilized. The present article introduces a promising methodology to select frequency points effectively. To achieve this goal, modal strain energy ratio of each member was evaluated at different natural frequencies of structure in order to identify the sensitive frequency domain for damage detection. The proposed methodology opens up the possibility of much greater detection efficiency. In addition, the performance of the proposed method was evaluated in relation to multiple damages. The aforementioned points are illustrated using the numerical study of a two dimensional jacket platform, and the results proved to be satisfactory utilizing the proposed methodology. 展开更多

Two single-storey single-span reinforcement concrete (RC) frame structures strengthened with Y-eccentrically brace were designed and manufactured to be 1/3 scale. The pseudo-dynamic testing method was used to study the mechanical characteristics and the seismic performance under E1-Centro earthquake action with different peak acceleration adjusted by China's Code for Seismic Design of Buildings. The test results indicate that RC frame structures strengthened with Y- eccentrically steel brace present perfect seismic performance under strong earthquake action owing to the good ductility, strong bearing capability and fine energy absorbing capability provided by energy dissipation element and high lateral stiffness provided by diagonal braces. The seismic performance is also affected by the length of outsourcing steel at the joint between energy dissipation element of eccentric steel brace and RC frame beam. The joint should be considerably designed to make sure that shear failure can firstly occur in energy dissipation element. 展开更多

The convergent ability under different prestress and different load types is investigated. Then the calculated deformations are compared with the experimental values. An engineering system may consist of several different types of components, belonging to such physical"domains"as mechanical, electrical, fluid, and thermal. It is termed a multi-domain(or multi-physics)system.The present paper concerns the use of linear graphs(LGs)to generate a minimal model for a multi-physics system.A state-space model has to be a minimal realization.Specifically, the number of state variables in the model should be the minimum number that can completely represent the dynamic state of the system. This choice is not straightforward.Initially, state variables are assigned to all the energy-storage elements of the system. However, some of the energy storage elements may not be independent, and then some of the chosen state variables will be redundant. An approach is presented in the paper, with illustrative examples in the mixed fluid-mechanical domains,to illustrate a way to recognize dependent energy storage elements and thereby obtain a minimal state-space model.System analysis in the frequency domain is known to be more convenient than in the time domain, mainly because the relevant operations are algebraic rather than differential. For achieving this objective, the state space model has to be converted into a transfer function. The direct way is to first convert the state-space model into the input-output differential equation, and then substitute the time derivative by the Laplace variable. This approach is shown in the paper. The same result can be obtained through the transfer function linear graph(TF LG)of the system. In a multi-physics system, first the physical domains have to be converted into an equivalent single domain(preferably, the output domain of the system),when using the method of TFLG.This procedure is illustrated as well,in the present paper. 展开更多

A timely and accurate damage identification for bridge structures is essential to prevent sudden failures/collapses and other catastrophic accidents.Based on response surface model(RSM)updating and element modal strain energy(EMSE)damage index, this paper proposes a novel damage identification method for girder bridge structures. The effectiveness of the proposed damage identification method is investigated using experiments on four simply supported steel beams. With Xiabaishi Bridge,a prestressed continuous rigid frame bridge with large span,as the engineering background, the proposed damage identification method is validated by using numerical simulation to generate different bearing damage scenarios. Finally, the efficiency of the method is justified by considering its application to identifying cracking damage for a real continuous beam bridge called Xinyihe Bridge. It is concluded that the EMSE damage index is sensitive to the cracking damage and the bearing damage. The locations and levels of multiple cracking damages and bearing damages can be also identified. The results illuminate a great potential of the proposed method in identifying damages of real bridge structures. 展开更多

A series of numerical tests was conducted to study the micromechanical properties and energy dissipation in polydisperse assemblies of spherical particles subjected to uniaxial compression. In general, distributed particle size assemblies with standard deviations ranging from 0% to 80% of the particle mean diameter were examined. The microscale analyses included the trace of the fabric tensor, magnitude and orien- tation of the contact forces, trace of stress, number of contacts and degree of mobilization of friction in contacts between particles. In polydisperse samples, the average coordination numbers were lower than in monodisperse assemblies, and the mobilization of friction was higher than in monodisperse assemblies due to the non-uniform spatial rearrangement of spheres in the samples and the smaller displacements of the particles. The effect of particle size heterogeneity on both the energy density and energy dissipation in systems was also investigated. 展开更多

Leakage from underground pipes could result in foundations being undermined and cause damage to adjacent infrastructure. Soil particles surrounding the leaking area could be mobilised, displaced, and even washed out of the soil matrix by the leaking fluid, generating a void or cavity. A two-dimensional simulation using a coupled discrete element method and lattice Boltzmann method (DEM-LBM) has been used to investigate the behaviour of a soil bed subject to a locally injected fluid, which represents a leak in a pipe. Various values of inter-particle surface energy were also adopted to model the mechanical effects of cohesive particles. The results suggest that the inter-particle surface energy greatly influences the bed response with respect to the leaking fluid, including the excess pressure initiating the cavity, the cavity shape and its evolution rate. 展开更多
