The Double Take column looks at a single topic from an African and Chinese perspective. This month,we discuss how to understand the growing emphasis on emotional returns among young people.Emotional value has emerged as a central force shaping youth decision-making across work, consumption, relationships and lifestyle choices.Unlike traditional economic rationality that prioritises income and material security, emotional value focuses on how choices make individuals feel and how they align with personal meaning. This shift is particularly evident in rapidly transforming societies such as China and Ghana, where economic restructuring, globalisation and social change have reshaped pathways to adulthood. 展开更多

Background:Parenting exerts a profound influence on children’s mental health and behavioral development.Despite the high prevalence of children’s emotional and behavioral problems(CEBP)in China,evidence-based parenting interventions remain scarcely investigated as preventive public health strategies. This pilot study evaluated a school-based intervention for preventing CEBP.Methods:We employed a quasi-experimental design with propensity score matching(PSM)to select 28 families(intervention:n=13;control:n=15)from two matched urban primary schools.Quantitative data from seven validated scales were analyzed using t-tests and ANCOVA.Qualitative insights were derived from 10 semi-structured interviews via thematic analysis. Results:Compared to the control group, the intervention group demonstrated significantly greater improvements in CEBP(p=0.020,Cohen’s d=0.92),parental adjustment(p=0.031,Cohen’s d=0.80),parenting confidence(p=0.003,Cohen’s d=1.04),and parentchild relationships(p=0.001,Cohen’s d=1.46).Non-significant effects were observed for parenting style, parental relationship, and parenting conflict(p>0.05).Qualitative analysis corroborated these findings and further identified contributing factors for non-significant outcomes, including challengeswithmeasurement adaptability and inconsistent co-parenting practices. Conclusions:This pilot study suggests that an authoritative parenting style may be effective and culturally adaptable in China.Positive parenting interventions appear to mitigate CEBP by reducing risk factors and enhancing protective factors. However, improving parental relationships and parenting conflict may require targeted strategies.Given the pilot nature of this PSM-matched study(n=28),the findings should be interpreted as exploratory and used primarily for intervention refinement. 展开更多

Although numerousfindings show that people experience both positive and negative experiences with regards to solitude, the relationship between solitude capacity and emotional experience remains unclear. The current study investigated the extent to which emotion regulation may play a suppressive role in the relationship between solitude capacity and emotional experience.Questionnaires on solitude capacity, emotion regulation, and emotional experience were completed by a sample of Chinese college students(n=844;432 females;Meanage=19.79 years,SD=1.43 years). The results of the indirect effect test showed that cognitive reappraisal suppresses the prediction of solitude capacity on positive emotions, while the solitude capacity prediction of negative emotions was suppressed by both cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. This suggests that solitude capacity does not predict emotional experience directly, but instead is realized through an antagonistic system consisting of adaptive and nonadaptive emotion regulation strategies.Thesefindings provide cross-sectional empirical support for the ecological niche hypothesis of solitude, and are of theoretical significance in clarifying the role of internal mechanisms of solitude capacity on the human emotional experience. 展开更多

Based on previous experience, learning to avoid or seek certain specific stimuli again in the future is crucial for survival. Our brains are wired to assign a particular valence-either positive or negativeas a result of sensory stimuli, and it is this valence that serves as the foundational motivation for our subsequent actions.Simply put,all motivational actions fall into two categories:pleasure-seeking behavior guided by positive emotional valence, and pain-avoiding behavior driven by negative emotional valence[1].The ability to shift from one emotional valence to another is an important characteristic of affective states, while the instability of emotional states underlies many psychiatric disorders, highlighting the clinical importance of managing and understanding these fluctuations. This ability to adapt emotional responses can be attained by modulating the gain across distinct neural pathways, thus enabling the nuanced and smooth assignment of valence through the strengthening or weakening of circuit activity[1,2]. 展开更多

In robotics and human-robot interaction,a robot’s capacity to express and react correctly to human emotions is essential.A significant aspect of the capability involves controlling the robotic facial skin actuators in a way that resonates with human emotions. This research focuses on human anthropometric theories to design and control robotic facial actuators, addressing the limitations of existing approaches in expressing emotions naturally and accurately. The facial landmarks are extracted to determine the anthropometric indicators for designing the robot head and is employed to the displacement of these points to calculate emotional values using Fuzzy C-Mean(FCM).The rotating angles of skin actuators are required to account for the smaller emotions, which enhance the robot’s ability to perform emotions in reality. In addition, this study contributes a novel approach based on facial anthropometric indicators to tailor emotional expressions to diverse human characteristics, ensuring more personalized and intuitive interactions. The results demonstrated howfuzzy logic can be employed to improve a robot’s ability to express emotions, which are digitized into fuzzy values. This is also the contribution of the research, which laid the groundwork for robots that can interact with humans more intuitively and empathetically. The performed experiments demonstrated that the suitability of proposed models to conduct tasks related to human emotions with the accuracy of emotional value determination and motor angles is 0.96 and 0.97,respectively. 展开更多

Climate change has well-documented psychological consequences for society. However, the emotional experiences of frontline conservation professionals remain underexplored. As key knowledge producers and participants in decision-making processes, conservation researchers play a crucial role in shaping and implementing adaptation and mitigation efforts, which are pivotal for effective climate planning.Understanding their emotional responses is essential for enhancing the success of these strategies and supporting climate action. This study aims to identify the most prevalent emotions experienced by conservation researchers regarding climate change across various countries and to examine the qualitative and quantitative factors shaping these emotions. An online survey was conducted with 362 participants from 98 academic and research institutions, utilising both closed and open-ended questions to capture demographic data, climate knowledge, stances on mitigation and adaptation, and emotional responses.Data analysis revealed that feelings of powerlessness, guilt, and concern were most frequently reported, driven by a profound sense of inability to halt climate change, frustration with perceived inaction by governments and industries, and self-assessed personal shortcomings.Age and stances on climate adaptation were identified as primary factors influencing emotional responses, particularly among individuals aged 20–50 and 61–70,with opposition to adaptation correlating with stronger emotional reactions.Demographic factors such as region, place of residence, and mitigation stances played a minor role. These findings provide valuable insights into the psychological well-being of conservation researchers related to climate change. 展开更多

Emotion recognition systems hold significant practical value due to the vital role emotions play in daily human life.Since cardiac activities are critically involved in the process of emotional arousal, developing emotion recognition systems based on cardiac signals is of great importance.However,inter-subject variability causes a major challenge for cross-subject emotion recognition and remains a key bottleneck for the practical application of emotion recognition systems. Here we report a photonic cross-subject emotion recognition system(PCERS)based on seismocardiography(SCG)signals, leveraging machine learning techniques driven by complex network feature engineering to decode subject-invariant emotional information from signals. In the cardiac activity monitoring component,we developed a photonic system for SCG signal detection and implemented a sample entropy-based signal processing pipeline. These designs enable precise cardiac activity monitoring as the foundation for emotion recognition. In the emotion recognition component, the complex network features extracted from SCG signals show significant differences between different emotional states, but no significant differences across subjects.Incorporating these features into the machine learning pipeline enables efficient cross-subject emotion recognition, achieving accuracies 81.25%in leave one-out(LOO)subject-independent emotion recognition. Results in this work suggested that PCERS has potential to contribute meaningfully to practical,real-life emotion recognition applications. 展开更多

Teacher attrition remains a persistent concern, with decisions about whether to remain in teaching often taking shape during the pre-service phase. While recent quantitative research has identified enjoyment as a key predictor of pre-service teacher persistence, little is known about how enjoyment is experienced and sustained in everyday teaching practice.Addressing this gap, this narrative inquiry explores how enjoyment functions as an emotional resource shaping a pre-service teacher’s desire to persist in teaching during a project-based learning(PBL)practicum.Focusing on the narrative experiences of a pre-service English teacher,Yang, the study draws on semi-structured interviews, emotion diaries, and classroom observations collected over seven weeks. The findings show that enjoyment initially emerged from students’engagement and visible learning, but became fragile when Yang encountered instructional uncertainty and emotional strain.Through reflective meaning-making,enjoyment was reinterpreted as something that could coexist with difficulty, enabling it to be sustained. The study reconceptualises persistence as a narrative,future-oriented professional orientation shaped through emotional experience. 展开更多
