Recursion by wild animals is rarely investigated but may be ubiquitous. Optimal foraging theory predicts site recursion as a function of the quality of the site, extent of its last use, and time since its last use because these influence site resource status and recovery. We used GPS collars, behaviour and site sampling to investigate recursion to foraging sites for two elephant Elephas maximus borneensis herds in the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, Borneo, over a 12 month period. Recursion occurred to 48 out of 87 foraging sites and was most common within 48 hours or between 151-250 days, indicating two different types ofrecursion. Recursion was more likely to occur if the site had previously been occupied for longer. Moreover, the time spent at a site at recursion was the same as the time spent at the site on the first occasion. The number of days that had passed between the first visit and recursion was also positively correlated with how much time was spent at the site at recursion. Habitat type also influenced the intensity of site-use, with more time spent at recursion within riverine/open grass areas along forest margins compared to other habitat types. Recursion is a common behaviour used by the elephants and its pattern suggests it may be a foraging strategy for revisiting areas of greater value. The qualities of recursion sites might usefully be incorporated into landscape management strategies for elephant conservation in the area [Current Zoology 60 (4): 551-559, 2014]. 展开更多

The increasing challenges of environmental degradation, soil erosion, and climate change have driven interest in sustainable solutions like enhanced weathering(EW)and phytoremediation.Elephant Grass(Cenchrus purpureus),a fast-growing perennial species, shows promise as a bioaccumulator and agent for soil weathering. This study assessed the potential of C.purpureus to improve soil quality through heavy metal(HM)uptake and EW facilitation.A 60-day greenhouse pot experiment at Jackson State University evaluated plant performance in soils amended with metabasalt rock powder at 1:1 and 2:1 rock-to-soil ratios.Biomass, growth, and HM concentrations in roots and shoots were measured via ICP-MS after wet digestion.Soil pH and magnesium(Mg)release were also monitored to assess weathering and carbon drawdown. Results showed that C.purpureus accumulated more HMs in roots at higher amendment levels, while at lower levels, metals like As,Cd,and Cr were more translocated to shoots, enhancing phytoextraction potential.High treatment favored Fe and Al uptake, possibly reducing toxic metal accumulation in edible parts.Notably,C.purpureus contributed to the weathering of 38%of metabasalt rock, leading to a 42%increase in Mg release. With high biomass,HM tolerance, and weathering capacity,C.purpureus offers a sustainable strategy for soil remediation, improved soil health, and potential support for renewable energy systems. 展开更多

Bionanocomposite film is produced from renewable and biodegradable natural resources.Although elephant foot yam(EFY)starch(Amorphophallus paeoniifolius)is a promising polymer for bionanocomposite film, the native hydrophilic properties influence the overall performance characteristics.Incorporating virgin coconut oil(VCO)and monoglyceride as hydrophobic components can improve mechanical properties and reduce permeability while increasing the hydrophobicity of the composite. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of adding VCO and monoglyceride on EFY starch-nanocrystalline film at 3 and 5 wt%concentrations.Experimental tests were conducted to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties, water vapor transmission rate(WVTR),morphology, functional groups, biodegradability, and hydrophobicity. The results showed that the addition of 5 wt%monoglyceride produced optimum outcomes by reducing the WVTR to 3.99 g.m^(−2).h^(−1),increasing the thickness to 0.134 mm and decreasing the solubility to 36.04%.The Universal Testing Machine(UTM)tests showed an elongation of 74.59%,showing excellent elasticity. The Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM)test showed the bonds formed with starch granules, leading to a flatter surface. The Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR)test also showed an increase in the wavelength of the C=O groups and a decrease in the O-H groups. The contact angle test processed using image-J showed high hydrophobicity, consequently reducing the biodegradability of bionanocomposite film by the Aspergillus niger fungal degradation test.In conclusion, this study successfully developed bionanocomposite film with enhanced hydrophobicity, elasticity, and barrier properties, highly suitable for protecting food from humid air.The composite holds great potential for further development as an environmentally friendly packaging solution. 展开更多

Human-elephant conflict(HEC)poses a major socio-ecological challenge across elephant range states.Since 2015,the National Forest Ecosystem Research Station of China based in Xishuangbanna has developed the Elephant Early-warning System(EEWS),a novel approach that has demonstrably reduced the risk of HEC incidents-particularly those involving direct encounters between people and elephants.By dynamically maintaining safety buffers, this system safeguards endangered elephants while mitigating human safety risks during livelihood activities and ensuring uninterrupted elephant movement.Building upon the C4ISR framework(Command,Control,Communications,Computers,Intelligence,Surveillance, and Reconnaissance),EEWS integrates key technological and institutional innovations-including the widespread adoption of mobile internet, deployment of camera traps, use of drones, and cross-sectoral governance reforms. The EEWS’s conceptual framework and technical architecture have been already recognized by local government and are now being scaled up from Xishuangbanna to the entire Asian elephant range in China, establishing a replicable“China model”for achieving harmonious human-elephant coexistence. This study reviews the conceptual foundations, development, and field implementation of EEWS,and offers recommendations to guide future refinement and broader application. 展开更多

In recent years,decomposition-based evolutionary algorithms have become popular algorithms for solving multi-objective problems in real-life scenarios. In these algorithms, the reference vectors of the Penalty-Based boundary intersection(PBI)are distributed parallelly while those based on the normal boundary intersection(NBI)are distributed radially in a conical shape in the objective space. To improve the problem-solving effectiveness of multi-objective optimization algorithms in engineering applications, this paper addresses the improvement of the Collaborative Decomposition(CoD)method,a multi-objective decomposition technique that integrates PBI and NBI,and combines it with the Elephant Clan Optimization Algorithm, introducing the Collaborative Decomposition Multi-objective Improved Elephant Clan Optimization Algorithm(CoDMOIECO).Specifically,a novel subpopulation construction method with adaptive changes following the number of iterations and a novel individual merit ranking based onNBI and angle are proposed.,enabling the creation of subpopulations closely linked to weight vectors and the identification of diverse individuals within them.Additionally, new update strategies for the clan leader, male elephants, and juvenile elephants are introduced to boost individual exploitation capabilities and further enhance the algorithm’s convergence. Finally,a new CoD-based environmental selection method is proposed, introducing adaptive dynamically adjusted angle coefficients and individual angles on corresponding weight vectors, significantly improving both the convergence and distribution of the algorithm.Experimental comparisons on the ZDT,DTLZ,and WFG function sets with four benchmark multi-objective algorithms—MOEA/D,CAMOEA,VaEA,and MOEA/D-UR—demonstrate that CoDMOIECO achieves superior performance in both convergence and distribution. 展开更多

While the Antarctic Slope Current(ASC) has been intensively studied for the East Antarctica slope area and the Weddell Sea, its fate in the western Antarctic Peninsula(WAP) region remains much less known. Data from two cruises conducted near the South Shetland Islands(SSIs) and the Elephant Island(EI), one in austral summer of 2004 and one in austral winter of 2006, were analyzed to provide a broad picture of the circulation pattern over the continental slope of the surveyed area, and an insight into the dynamical balance of the circulation. The results indicate that southwestward currents are present over the upper slope in the study area, indicating the ASC in the WAP region. Near the Shackleton Gap(SG) north of the EI, the southwestward slope currents near the shelf break are characterized by a water mass colder and fresher than the ambient water, which produces cross-slope density gradients and then vertical shear of the along-slope(or along-isobath) velocity. The vertical shear is associated with a reversal of the along-slope current from northeastward at surface to southwestward in deeper layers, or a depth-intensification of the southwestward slope currents. The water mass with temperature and salinity characteristics similar to the observed cold and fresh water is also revealed on the southern slope of the Scotia Sea, suggesting that this cold and fresh water is originated from the Scotia Sea slope and flows southwestward through the SG. Over the shelf north of the SSIs, the cold and fresh water mass is also observed and originates mainly from the Bransfield Strait. In this area, vertical structure of the southwestward slope currents is associated with the onshore intrusion of the upper Circumpolar Deep Water that creates cross-slope density gradients. 展开更多

Elephants capture the affection of people but also inspire animosity and fear at the same time. This is because there are conflicts with people over space, critical resources, costs of damages and general insecurity to people. This paper examined field evidence and interviewed expert key informants on current intensity and frequency of human-elephants in Amboseli Ecosystem. According to them, generally, the most prevalent (score of 1 lowest to 10 highest) threats to elephants were competition for critical resources (6.32 ± 0.44) followed by blocking of migration (6.24 ± 0.46), harassment of elephants (4.83 ± 0.75), poaching (4.57 ± 0.37), and retaliatory killings (3.78 ± 0.31). For threats that elephants pose to people, the most prevalent one was crop raiding (6.95 ± 0.26) followed by environmental degradation (6.71 ± 0.46), general insecurity to people (5.76 ± 0.65), property destruction (5.16 ± 0.41), injury and death to livestock (3.78 ± 0.37), and injury and death to people (2.71 ± 0.27). For the severity of the threats, the highest score was given to crop raiding whose average score was 7.90 ± 0.24 followed by environmental destruction and degradation (6.89 ± 0.43), injury and death to people (6.72 ± 0.44), injury and death to livestock (6.36 ± 0.50), property destruction (5.78 ± 0.49), general insecurity to people (5.62 ± 0.64). Severity levels followed the same trend or varied slightly. These drivers of human-elephant conflicts need to be addressed decisively to protect both people and elephants. There is a need to ensure local people’s benefit from elephants through ecotourism investments such as wildlife sanctuaries, leasing critical space for elephants’ dispersal on acceptable terms, through appropriate compensation schemes for elephant costs, and supporting local community wildlife rangers to prevent conflicts. 展开更多

Human-wildlife conflict(HWC)negatively impacts both humans and wildlife.Attitudes of local residents have been critical in promoting wildlife conservation. It is therefore necessary to understand the characteristics of HWC and identify influential factors on attitudes towards conservation to implement conservation strategies efficiently. This research focused on features of human-elephant interactions, while attitudes and values regarding the small population of Asian elephants(Elephas maximus)in Nangunhe National Nature Reserve(NNR),Yunnan,China. The total of 327 valid questionnaires were gathered around the area where Asian elephants were distributed.Logistic regression models were employed to analyze the correlations among five predictor variables(‘Area’,‘Family size’,‘Annual income’,‘Quantity of family members in non-primary industries’and‘Experiencing loss or not’)and three response variables(‘Attitude towards elephants’,‘Perception of the values of elephants’and‘Attitude towards tourism development’).The study area was densely forested with tea plants, rubber trees, corns and sugarcane.There,25.99%of respondents reported the experience of human-elephant conflict(HEC),with crop raiding and cash crop damages being the major conflict types. To demonstrate respect for elephants and to mitigate HEC,a unique custom called‘Giving tribute to elephants’was developed long ago.Respondents’township with an official annual festival of‘Giving Tribute to Elephants’(odds ratio(OR)=2.75,P=1.73×10^(-6))and higher annual income(OR=2.09,P=5.45×10^(-5))significantly contributed to forming a more positive attitude towards elephants, whereas HEC itself have contributed to a more negative attitude(OR=0.50,P=3.29×10^(-3)).Therefore,we propose that:1)reducing human-elephant conflict by testing multiple mitigation measures and adopting the most effective one of them;2)enhancing local livelihoods through the development of ecological products and ecotourism;and 3)preserving and developing the Wa culture in this region. The study area deserves more attention and further research to explore and obtain endorsement from the public to achieve coexistence between human and wildlife. 展开更多
