According to the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory), the average lifecycle of a building in a university is 42 years with an EUI (energy use intensity) of 23 kWh/m^2/y. Current building and energy codes limit the EUI to 16 kWh/m^2/y for new school buildings; this benchmark can vary depending on climate, occupancy, and other contextual factors. Although the LEED (leadership in energy and environmental design) system provides a set of guidelines to rate sustainable buildings, studies have shown that 28%-35% of the educational LEED-rated buildings use more energy than their conventional counterparts. This paper examines the issues specific to a LEED-rated design addition to an existing university building. The forum, a lecture hall expansion of to an existing building at the University of Kansas, has been proposed as environmentally friendly and energy-efficient building addition. Comfort and health aspects have been considered in the design in order to obtain LEED platinum certificate. The forum's energy performance strategies include a double-skin facade to reduce energy consumption and PV (photovoltaic) panels to generate onsite energy. This study considers various scenarios to meet NZEB (net-zero energy building) criteria and maximize energy savings. The feasibility of NZE criteria is evaluated for: (a) seasonal comparison; (b) facility occupancy; (c) PV panels' addition in relation to double skin facade. The results of NZEB approach are compared to LEED platinum requirements, based on Rol (return on investment) and PV panel's efficiency for this specific educational building.展开更多

文摘Based on the current status of educational inequality between urban and rural areas in China, this study transcends the traditional resource-centered perspective to examine the latent roles of cultural and social capital in the distribution of educational opportunities. The research finds that institutional arrangements, family cultural accumulation, social networks, and digital literacy collectively constitute the latent structure of urban-rural educational inequality, determining the access to and conversion efficiency of educational opportunities.Cultural capital influences students’educational adaptability through cognitive abilities, learning habits, and the accumulation of educational resources, while social capital expands educational opportunities through information access and social support.Their interaction exacerbates urban-rural disparities. The study further suggests that achieving educational equity requires a multidimensional coordinated strategy encompassing institutional restructuring, cultural empowerment, social capital development, and digital empowerment, providing both theoretical guidance and practical pathways for policy formulation and educational practice.

文摘Traditional educational paradigms prioritize age-based progression and early specialization as key indicators of academic potential, especially in STEM.This study challenges this norm by analyzing university entrance ages of 226 Nobel Physics Laureates(1901-2024).Results reveal a right-skewed distribution(Median=18;Mean=18.8;SD=2.4)with substantial variance(14-25 years),including outliers like Lev Landau(14)and Arthur Ashkin(24).Notably,figures such as Guglielmo Marconi achieved breakthroughs without formal university entry, relying on self-directed learning.Using survival analysis and multinomial regression,we find“non-traditional”timelines,accelerated,delayed,or non-formal pathways, correlate with distinct creative advantages. This suggests current“timeliness”metrics poorly predict transformative scientific achievement. We propose an“Optimal Chrono-Diversity”framework advocating flexible entry systems, enhanced adult learner support, and recognition of autodidactic potential to inform educational policy and cultivate innovative STEM talent.
