A surface edge element method is proposed and implemented in the study ofelectromagnetic scattering fields of general targets. The basis functions for surfaces of arbitraryshape are derived according to the geometrical properties of each triangular patch. The proposedbasis functions are 3-D linear functions and the tangential components of the vectors are continuousas the traditional edge element method. Combined field integral equations (CFIE) that include bothelectrical field and magnetic field integral equations are used to model the electromagneticscattering of general dielectric targets. Special treatment for singularity is presented to enhancethe quality of numerical solutions. The proposed method is used to compute the scattering fieldsfrom various targets. Numerical results obtained by the proposed method are validated by resultsfrom other numerical methods. 展开更多

Unusual photocarrier and coherent phonon dynamics behaviors of layered PdSe_(2)unveiled by ultrafast spectroscopy of the edge surface

Layered materials exhibit different electronic and phonon properties along in-plane and out-of-plane directions;existing studies focus on their in-plane behaviors,and the influence of such anisotropies on the dynamics of photocarriers and phonons is unknown.Here,we fabricate layered PdSe_(2)crystals with flat edge surfaces and compare the time-resolved ultrafast spectroscopies on their basal and edge surfaces.Pronounced differences in the transient reflection spectroscopies reveal the inconsistent photocarrier and phonon dynamics behaviors on the two surfaces:the slow hot carrier relaxation process is accelerated and the thermoelasticity-induced longitudinal coherent acoustic phonon oscillation completely vanishes on the edge surface,as compared with the basal surface.Theoretical analysis reveals that the inconsistent hot carrier dynamics originate from the anisotropic properties of low-energy phonons in PdSe_(2),and the absence of phonon oscillation on the edge surface results from the wavevector-limited sensitivity of acoustic B_(1u)mode.Moreover,polarization-dependent spectroscopies indicate the diverse optical anisotropies beyond the in-plane of PdSe_(2).This work provides a new method to explore unique physical properties and modulate the optical anisotropy of layered materials. 展开更多

Morphing wing has attracted many research attention and effort in aircraft technology development because of its advantage in lift to draft ratio and flight performance.Morphing wing technology combines the lift and control surfaces into a seamless wing and integrates the primary structure together with the internal control system.It makes use of the wing aeroelastic deformation induced by the control surface to gain direct force control through desirable redistribution of aerodynamic forces.However some unknown mechanical parameters of the control system and complexity of the integrated structure become a main challenge for dynamic modeling of morphing wing.To solve the problem,a method of test data based modal sensitivity analysis is presented to improve the morphing wing FE model by evaluating the unknown parameters and identifying the modeling boundary conditions.An innovative seamless morphing wing with the structure integrated with a flexible trailing edge control system is presented for the investigation.An experimental model of actuation system driven by a servo motor for the morphing wing is designed and established.By performing a vibration test and the proposed modal sensitivity analysis,the unknown torsional stiffness of the servo motor and the boundary condition of the actuation mechanism model is identified and evaluated.Comparing with the test data,the average error of the first four modal frequency of the improved FE model is reduced significantly to less than 4%.To further investigate the morphing wing modeling,a wing box and then a whole morphing wing model including the skin and integrated with the trailing edge actuation system are established and tested.By using the proposed method,the FE model is improved by relaxing the constraint between the skin and actuation mechanism.The results show that the average error of the first three modal frequency of the improved FE model is reduced to less than 6%.The research results demonstrate that the presented seamless morphing wing integrated with a flexible trailing edge control surface can improve aerodynamic characteristics.By using the test data based modal sensitivity analysis method,the unknown parameter and boundary condition of the actuation model can be determined to improve the FE model.The problem in dynamic modeling of high accuracy for a morphing wing can be solved in an effective manner. 展开更多

We suggest and develop a novel approach to determine edge/surface states in bounded systems based on the bulk Hamiltonian of their corresponding unbounded counterparts,where the k-space is extended to the complex k-one.This approach allows us to obtain simple conditions for the existence of edge/surface states in bounded systems.Our analysis also demonstrates that the emergence of such edge/surface states,which are intrinsically linked to the characteristics of system boundaries,cannot manifest without appropriate boundary conditions dictated by the necessity for wave function convergence.In order to demonstrate our method in action,we apply it to study some examples of non-topological and topological edge/surface states.We hope our discussion helps you gain a clearer and more intuitive understanding of the bulk–boundary correspondence. 展开更多

Steam is cheap, poilution-free and eco-friendly, and then is a good and economical coolant and lubricant. Steam generator and steam feeding system were developed to generate and feed steam. Comparative experiments were carried out in cutting AA6061-15 vol.% SiC (25 p.m particle size), with cubic boron nitride (CBN) insert KB-90 grade under the conditions of compressed air, oil water emulsion, steam as coolant and lubricant, and dry cutting, respectively. The experimental results show that, with steam as coolant and lubricant, gradual reduction in the cutting force, friction coefficient, surface roughness and cutting temperature values were observed. Further, there was reduction in built up edge formation. It is proved that use of water steam as coolant and lubricant is environmentally friendly. 展开更多

The paper presents an explicit matrix algorithm to solve the problem of an elastic wedge with three loaded surfaces.The algorithm makes use of a recently published concept of transformation matrix,by which the original surface loads are converted to equivalent loads in half-space.The three loaded edges are considered simultaneously.The developed algorithm is used to study the effects of two free edges of a steel block and tapered rollers with different contact angles.The two load-free edges can substantially increase deformation if the two edges are close in distance.The results of the tapered roller simulation show that deformation is considerably sensitive to the contact angle of the tapered roller.The largest deformation appears at the big end of the roller.Furthermore,empirical formulae for correction factors for the calculation of block or quarter-space deformation based on half-space solutions are summarized. 展开更多

As a part of boundaries for a free curved surface of a Pelton bucket,the cutout is indispensable to secure the smooth entrance of the unsteady inflow of water jet into the rotating bucket.The cutout of the rotating bucket unsteadily separates a free jet into two branches in both space and time:the impinging branch landing on the relevant bucket surface,and the flow-off branch separated by the cutout toward the preceding bucket.In order to investigate the unsteady jet separation by the cutout three-dimensionally,a semicircular free jet was discretized into 641 nodes of boundary-fitted grids.The position P of impinging jet branch landing on the bucket surface was acquired with the relative velocity W and the water depth D at each node.The trailing edge surface of the flow-off jet branch was simultaneously computed unsteadily.The complicate unsteady interaction of the bucket cutout with the branched free jets was clarified visually with the 3D view of illustrations in order to research the unsteady hydraulic performance of Pelton turbines in space and time. 展开更多

The field of colloidal nanocrystals has witnessed enormous progress in the last three decades.For many families of nanocrystals,wet-chemical syntheses have been developed that allow control over the crystal shape and dimensions,from the three-dimensional down to the zero-dimensional case.Additionally,careful control of surface chemistry has enabled the prevention of non-radiative recombination,thus allowing the detailed study of confined charge carriers and excitons.This has led to a vast amount of applications of nanocrystals in displays,labels,and lighting.Here,we discuss how this expertise could benefit the rapidly advancing field of quantum materials,where the coherence of electronic wave functions is key.We demonstrate that colloidal two-dimensional nanocrystals can serve as excellent model systems for studying topological phase transitions,particularly in the case of quantum spin Hall and topological crystalline insulators.We aim to inspire researchers with strong chemical expertise to explore the exciting field of quantum materials. 展开更多
